View Full Version : Raphs injuries/recovery in TMNT1

Did it ever bother anyone else that even though Raph was really brutally attacked in the first movie, he shed no blood? Even when I was seven and I saw it for the first time I was like "oh come on!". I guess they had to keep the movie entirely free of actual bloodshed because of the kiddies but hell, it was rated PG, so would it have really hurt them to just show a little to make it a bit more realistic? Those damn censor-crazy parents always have to ruin everything, huh? And, speaking of injuries, surely Raph should've had some severe internal bleeding or something? They beat him up so badly its amazing he survived at all.
And another thing, this is probably a really stupid question but please, humour me. ;) When Raph was at the farmhouse recovering, why the heck did they stick him in the bathtub? I've never gotten that at all, anyone out there who can explain?

Okay first of all they couldn't show blood since this movie was for children so if they showed blood then it would cause probably an uproar.
Also I guess for some reason turtles have to keep wet or something so the water in the bath tub helped him because April walked over and poured water over him in one scene unless Raph was running a fever that we didnt know about and the water was helping him cool down.

Well, it's obvious they wouldn't have blood dripping from him. I think he was more bruised up, broken and beaten more than sliced. They show them throwing hits at him than cutting. He did have bruises, I have a closeup screencapture that shows discolored skin on his face. And there were reddened scrapes.
He wouldn't have internal bleeding, his body is surrounded by a shell, that protects them...of course then he should have been fine geting beat up-plot hole hahah....

Why? I dunno. Pretty lame to me. What he needed was a bed, covers and to be bandanged up. A turtle's shell technically doesn't soften from being beat up either! If he were in my care I'd be sticking a UVB light over him 24/7 and a basking light. Then when he woke up, it'd be nothing by calcuim rich greens for him! And water turtles can be out of water for a very long time. I had to treat a turtle with shell rot and she had to be dry docked.

but going by the novelisation, thye comment on his shell being soft! hehe cracks me up. Oh no, the TMNT have a severe case of Metabolic Bone Disease! hahahaah!!

Oh okay! I have the book but I haven't read it ever since I was like 12! I should read my books and comics again! LOL
Raph didn't bleed because the Foot Soldiers never used bladed weapons in that scene. Raph's hide is tough and doesn't cut as quickly as a human's would. And I don't think the producers strayed from the bloodshed for the kids. Remember the scene where April gets slapped? Apart from her mugging scene, that was pretty extreme for a family movie to see a woman get slapped like that, heck, to get hit at all. I think the most reasonable explanation would be that Raph didn't bleed because turtle skin is tougher than ours.
About the tub scene, it's simple. Turtles are aquatic by nature. I guess the feel of the water would help revive Raph and make him feel refreshed when he eventually woke up.
Anyway, that's just my opinion.

Yeah you're right, Krow LOL I couldn't remember if the Foot Ninjas actually had bladed weapons or not. Also I agree about your theory about the bath tub, that's what I was thinking LOL

You'd be surprised, water turtle skin isn't very tough. but because of their mutation...let's just say...they're tough bastards.

There already was an uproar in parents about the first movie. Parents complained endlessly because it was darker. I guess they didn't want to anger them anymore.

I have that book that Buslady is talking about. It actually makes the story a little darker. They describe the scene with Shredder displaying his martial arts prowess by defeating a few young Foot ninjas, which was left out of the movie. Also, in the scene where Tatsu takes his rage out on Shinsu, a youthful ninja, the film shows him badly hurt, but his friends assure him that he's "going to be alright". In the novelisation, he slumps to the floor, dead. They go into a bit more detail with the fight scenes too, with talk of slashing and cutting. In fact, the novelisation made me realise how dark the first movie really is. On a side note, it also mentions Oruku Nagi.

Plus I think they were trying to send a message to the guys not to mess into Saki's business. So it was like dont kill him just mess him up some and throw him back at them and let them know, they'll be dead next time they run in with him.

From what I recall the Foot had nunchucks instead of katanas and sais when they snuck up on Raphael so of course he didn't get all cut up. Although the people in charge of the Turtle costumes could have at least touched up Raphael a bit more by adding a split lip and blackeye(s) since he was pretty much just beaten up.
Personally, I think Raph himself is made of stronger stuff than the Foot thought. So they decided to rough him up knowing that they couldn't dream of killing him. That's why they threw him through the window, I think. They couldn't get the job done so they thought to toss him through glass thinking that would work. And they were dead wrong.
That, and I think Saki wouldn't take his chances saying to send them a message. He's more of a kill-them-now-no-questions-asked type of guy.

After the fall through the skylight, it was kind of funny when April and Donatello touched Raph and his body jiggled a little like Jell-o and Donatello's hand kinda sunk into the surface of Raph's shell! :lol:

I agree, I thought the tub thing was dumb. But I still love the movie, I need to the book! I love novelizations based off movies or screenplays, read Dragonheart and E.T.!

Yeah no matter what tiny mistakes that the movie has I still enjoy it as my favorite TMNT movie :)
