Awhile back, Don Ivey and I were discussing what it would be like if various versions of the TMNT were to meet. We considered the idea of several Donatellos and Michelangelos in one place would be too creepy and the idea of several Leonardos would be pretty boring. Plus when you think about it, all three of them have the same personality in each universe.
However, the idea of all the various Raphaels in one place began to spark my imagination since each Raph had a slightly different persona. Then last night after watching some Adam Sandler movies, it hit me how much the different Raphs were each like the different movie characters the former SNL actor has played over the years.
Mirage/Image comics and Movie/Next Mutation Raphael are very hotheaded and extremely moody, much like the character Happy Gilmore whose hot temper nearly got him kicked out of a golf match. Another interesting factor of this movie is Happy was also a fan of hockey, much like a certain vigilante each Raph here is best buddies with!
The original cartoon Raphael is abit of a couch potato, sort of like one Billy Madison. But he’s also a very considerate individual and he loves to be humorous and he hates it when people hassle him or his friends; traits of which can be found in the Mr. Deeds character.
Archie comics Raphael is a lot like Adam’s character The Wedding Singer, very sure of himself and confident. However, the moment his heart is broken, he erupts like a volcano of emotion.
Fox Box Raphael is definitely also a mix of characters. Just like in the comics and the movies, he has a short fuse, however he has some control over them, similar to Adam’s character from Anger Management. In contrast, Raph’s anger can get the better of him and he becomes enraged similar to The Waterboy.
