View Full Version : Why blue, orange, and purple???

i know it was to sell toys to kids.....i guess my question really is why those colors??? why did raph retain the red bandana?? shouldn't leo, the leader, be the one who wore red??? i'm just wondering if there is some particular reason that blue, orange, and purple???

NeoBix

You'll have to excuse me, but why NOT blue, orange, and purple?

Why should red be the leader's color, and not blue? In fact, I've always thought of blue as more of a leader's color than red. Blue, to me, manifests valor, strength, and honor.

Red, to me, manifests more of a rebellious, bad attitude, tough guy kind of aura... which is why I think it fits Raphael's personality perfectly.

Orange? Well... I don't know, really. Orange really isn't one of the premium colors that people usually think of... but orange is bright and lively, just like Mikey. Mikey's great sense of humor and the comedian side of him are represented well through the color of orange.

As for purple... not sure... but it was a good choice. Donatello is a very balanced turtle. He's not the super funny one (like Mikey) and he's not the best fighter (like either Leo or Raph). Granted, he's probably the smartest one out of all of the turtles, when it comes to fixing things and machines and all that... but Donny has never really been prone to much criticism. He's always been just sort of the neutral turtle. Or maybe when they were picking colors for the turtles, someone in the studio just happened to draw the long straw for purple when it was Donatello's turn. :P

Tru that makes sence.....i'm just wondering if there was a specific rerason or if it was just "hey why not orange, blue and purple??!!"

Red, to me, manifests more of a rebellious, bad attitude, tough guy kind of aura... which is why I think it fits Raphael's personality perfectly.
you make a lot of sence......it's now becoming very obvious how little i thought before i posted this :tgrin: the only reason i thought leo should stay red is cause it's the orignal color....and he's the head of the group,.....but raph is a hot head with a red hot temper.

Orange? Well... I don't know, really. Orange really isn't one of the premium colors that people usually think of... but orange is bright and lively, just like Mikey. Mikey's great sense of humor and the comedian side of him are represented well through the color of orange.\
ok.....i won't even say it again.....it's getting kinda redundant....wild bright flashy....Orange...fits to me....

As for purple... not sure... but it was a good choice. Donatello is a very balanced turtle. He's not the super funny one (like Mikey) and he's not the best fighter (like either Leo or Raph). ha.....posible.....purple is bright....and donny is the brightest bulb in the preverbial lamp. but now i'm just reaching.....well thought out buddy.....

Nicely said, NeoBix. :)

My take on it is pretty simular.

Blue seems to represent spirituality, calmness, freedom, and everlasting.

Purple seems to represent knowledge, mystery, and creativity.

Red seems to represent anger, lust, and mortality.

Orange seems to represent healing, balance, compassion, and charm.

I can see what you mean, Jester, about Leo being the one to keep the original color because of him being the "front" turtle or "representitive" of the group, but I'm glad that Leo has the blue color. It suits him so much better.

Plus, out of the three primary and three secondary colors, only yellow and green remain. Yellow would not have looked so good, and green... would blend with their skin too much :P

very fun topic, Jester. glad you thought of it bro.

and yeah Ryo looks like you had the same idea as I did with the colors, just a few differences.

I think their colors are perfect for each turtle.

and, a funny thing about the reference to yellow...

in the first turtles arcade game, Mikey is more of a yellow color than orange... and if you'll notice, the joystick on the arcade machine for Mikey is clearly YELLOW, and not orange... what was Konami thinking? or maybe they just ran out of orange paint? :P

well back then the grapfics for making games I don't think they could do orange.

Actually, 8-bit graphics can produce 256 different colors. Orange is certainly one of them. 16-bit graphics can produce well over a thousand.
So, while the home version of TMNT II is 8-bit, the arcade version of TMNT II is 16-bit. most likely they used a bright, light shade of orange for Michaelangelo. I do remember the joystick and buttons clearly being yellow however!

I don't know about you guys... but I remember when I first saw the arcade game, and I thought those graphics were just AMAZING. Back in '89 or '90 when I first saw it, those graphics were very impressive. Bright shiny graphics and colors and ALL FOUR turtles can play at once against a billion foot soldiers?!?! MADNESS! lol... that game was SO great. :D

well they all had red in the comics but it also goes back to their personality..blue for calm and serene like Leo..purple for mellowness...and loyalty. Orange for fun..and raph for anger

I think it's still pretty amazing.
But yeah, I believe the colors of the Turtle's masks were chosen to match the brightness of the sprites' skin, so Michelangelo probably came off looking more yellow because his skin was close to neon green. I guess Konami/Ultra just wanted to make sure you could see him.

actually, mikey's color was more yellowish in the first 5 eps of the old show. maybe that's why he was like that in the arcade game.

i wonder how the new toon woulda fared if they all wore red. i mean, that's how they were meant to be.

NeoBix
08-20-2004, 10:11 PM
In my honest opinion, I believe that it was the decision to change them from ALL red to individual, unique colors, like they did, which led to the whole wave of turtlemania during the late 80s and early to mid 90s.

Granting each turtle his own color not only made it easier for people to recognize and tell apart the turtles from one another, but it also bestowed upon each turtle their own autonomy. When fans of TMNT think of their favorite turtle, they have a way to familiarize with and recognize that turtle.

"Oh, I loved Michaelangelo. He was the orange, funny one, right?"

"Who was that dude who wore blue and had the swords? Oh yeah, it was Leonardo. God, I used to love that show."

"Raphael was such a bad ass. He was the red one with those knife dealies... what were those called... oh yeah, sais!"

"Do you remember Donny? He was the coolest! Yeah, yeah! The one in purple, who could fix ANYTHING! That's the one!"

Without their own colors, TMNT would not have grown into the huge deal it is today. Here, once again, in the year 2004, we are experiencing sort of what I will refer to as a "rebirth" of the turtlemania that struck the world back in the 80s and early to mid 90s. The new show has especially sparked people's imaginations once again. New comers and old comers alike. It's good that a new generation can sort of experience what we experienced, although nothing will ever be the same as the very first turtlemania back in the day. :D

so, no... in the new show, if they had chosen to make all of them red instead of their own colors, I hardly think it would be as successful as it is. in fact, I think it would've failed miserably by now.

I like the Idea of the turtles having different color headbands. In the toon if they all had the same color bands it may make them seem a bit bland.

Kali
08-21-2004, 02:58 PM
Well, geez, everybody's already said everything I was going to say! So I guess I agree, basic colors are appealing and easy to recognize. Could you really imagine having to say "The turtle in the yellow-green bandanna" or "I like the guy in periwinkle!"?

And once they had the colors, they made the perfect choices for each turtle. Their colors suit them.

Whitewolf89
08-21-2004, 06:22 PM
I agree with you, and everyone else, on all counts, Kali. The guys' colors suit them, so why sweat the load over it? Has our questioner ever stopped to think that Pete and Kev picked those colors out themselves?

And I can think of a worse color than periwinkle. What about chartruse (sp?)? THAT'S a color that I'd hate to see ANYONE in, to say nothing of our guys! And knowing THEM, they'd buck up on it, anyway!

Chartreuse? *shudders* LOL! Well, to be honest, I don't think periwinkle's a bad color, just that it would be a bit of a mouthful compared to the basics.

Think about this, in your basic set of kids' crayons (8 pack), you have all the colors required to draw all the ninja turtles. These are colors that kids are already familiar with.

Anyway, what's been said about the colors fitting the personalities is really right-on, in my opinion. I'd never really given it much thought (except for Raph's), but now that I think about it, I just don't think any other colors would have worked as well.

I think they chose purple for Donatello because Donatello is kind of girly. It's a possibility that Donatello is a homosexual turtle. And yes, animals CAN be homosexuals... I have seen gay dogs and cats before.

But they gave him the color purple to show that he is so feminine and that he likes other boy turtles more than girl turtles. He has been trying to hide his sexuality all this time by working on gadgets and machinery.

Animals can't be homosexual. :o Animals breed purely for the sake of reproducing, with very few exceptions (turtles are not included in that exception), and it is purely instinctive for them to mate. A male finds a female and they make more animals. And that's that. In terms of an anthromorphic/mutant animal though, with human-like traits and emotions, there's a slight chance they could be. But if, according to some theories I've read, the mutation has rendered them sterile, perhaps with the lack of sexual growth they wouldn't develop those social traits.

well, that was bizarre. Donatello has clearly shown sexual interest in females. In both the old series and the new series Donatello has always found April to be attractive. Infact, in the new series, Donatello is the only turtle who has a crush on April.

Anyway...... I see that you cleard that up. I just wanted to further clear it up incase anyone was confused. :)

Oh, btw, purple is a unisex color like pretty much every other color.

And yes, there is such thing as homosexual animals. I saw a documentary about it on I think "National Geographic" or something like that.

I got a qestion since we all seem to understand why the four have multie colored bandanna's what about the other turtles like Slash and (shudders) Venus what do there colors mean. I can understand Slash's color of black pretty well since alot of people have always thought of that color as representing evil or darkness. I always thought of slash as maybe a dark version of Raph if he ever just gave into his berserk urges and just let his anger consume him instead trying to go by Splinters teachings of restaint and balance. So him being a dark version of the turtles black would be pretty suitable. As for Venus I cant think of one reason why she would have light blue I always thought White would have suited her better I geuss also it would have gave some variaty.

EDIT: I used the toy/Archie/Game version of Slash for my example since I cant remember the cartoon Slash very well also I think he had a metal silver mask not a bandanna.

White bandanas are strictly reserved for Benvenuto.

Venus had the sky blue bandana because she was female. It simply fit her more. She actually should have had a pink one, but I guess the producers thought that the blue went better with her green skin. It's a strange decision to me.

I once emailed friendly ol' Dan Berger from Mirage and asked him this same question. He said that the people who produced the first toon came up with it with no explaination as to why those colors were picked, and why each color was given to each turtle. While at first the mirage dudes didn't really like it, Peter Laird came later to say that he did like it as it was a far less nauseating way of telling the turtles apart then say, initials on the belt buckles.

Not only that, but I believe they did that so they'd be really easy to recoginze in animation... dispite the fact the animators kept messing their colors up...

Sort of like when they translated the Beagle Boys from old Carl Barks Scrooge McDuck comics to animated versions, they each had their own personality, where as the comics, they were just a band that made idnetical movements. Plus the numbers were too hard to read when they moved!

As silly as that may sound, colors CAN have a psychological affect on people, not just kids...

Did you know that, often times, before actors will go out to be in front of the camera they will sit in their chair in a back room and look at a green-colored screen? Why? Because, supposedly, green is the most soothing and calm color, and it calms the actors down before they go out onto the set. So they don't get too excited or whatever... it's strange, I know.

There are other examples, too, such as the reason for stop lights and stop signs being the color red, but I won't go detail with those right now.

ha......good points Kameko......i think it's stupid....pretty soon no grades....that makes kiddy's feel bad.....i mean, in the words of 20/20's tom stosal, "Give me a break!!!!" i saw my fair share of red ink and look at me now......MUHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

Personally, the one thing I wish they did was keep Mike's bandana a more yellowish tint (like in the first five cartoons) than a more red, dark orange. Mainly because it was a little close to Raph's red bandana.

This post is truly a time capsule of 20 years ago.

I mean purple was a gay color for many years, I think Barney and Teletubbies were to blame since people would just call them gay and they were purple (one of the teletubbies). It didn't help that Prince liked purple and he was gay. And people already saw Donatello as the DEI turtle since he was both black and gay.

Purple now has become more of a cool retro color that represents the 80s and 90s or even a neo cyberpunk aesthetic so it's now a cool color. And now the rainbow color which represented a fun and cool place to be at is now the gay color, and people get really mad when you have something of various colors. At school if you have folders in your binders and they're different colors you are now saying you're gay, so people will buy one color folders/dividers and just add a label to know what subject its for. Crazy times, can you imagine Donatello if he had been created today? He'd have a rainbow colored bandanna.

Purple is considered a "royal" color before any other considerations. Still, it's by default the most feminine of the McTMNT™ rainbow colors.

Also, I'm willing to bet $100 that NeoBix is a full on boomer MAGA.

You mean in his post from 2004, over a decade before Trump ever ran for president? Although spending a couple minutes browsing his posts from 2004-2006... kind of seems like it might have been a Goku alt.

When did purple become associated with gay people anyway? When I was a kid I do remember it being associated with kings and royalty. Hell, Shredder in the original cartoon wears a purple cape! And nobody thought Fred Wolf Shredder was a gay!

Pretty sure it was just a connotation coming out of the teletubbies. Because the purple one had a sort-of gay symbol on its head. Also maybe something about Linberace types and purple capes or whatever.

I found something interesting about the different colors of oni mask in Japanese culture.

Red Oni is greed and desire.

Blue Oni is anger and hatred.

Yellow Oni is restlessness and agitation.

Green Oni is sloth and lethargy.

Black Oni is doubt and suspicion.

Man, I love these ancient threads.

Jesus Christ, first Gina Carano is fat, now this? What color is the sky in your world?

Prince was not gay and Donatello is not black. He’s clearly Jewish!

Purple is considered a "royal" color before any other considerations. Still, it's by default the most feminine of the McTMNT™ rainbow colors.

I never really considered it feminine. Maybe baby-ish, especially since green and purple together evoke Barney.

There’s plenty of purple pro sports teams. Vikings, Ravens, Rockies, Lakers, Kings. Plenty of NCAA teams too.

Ban his ass!

What on earth??? All people talk about is how he and Krang are an old gay couple and Bebop and Rockstar are their sons.

That wasn’t until a little later. I remember the big school yard joke in 1998 was how Tinky Winky was “in the gay parade” lol

I thought the explanation was was pretty simple. They all initially wore red, Playmates didn't like that, they made two of them wear orange and purple because they are derived from red, then Leo was given blue because the only other red derivative left is pink and that was considered a no no for a boys' toy.

That's actually an urban legend, mirage was a small company so they could only afford red dye for the masks on the cover and black and white inside. Laird confirmed in many interviews after that he always intended the turtles to have different colors hence why in 2003 has them with colores bandannas. Blue for Leo since it's a leadership color, red for Raph since it's a rough guy color, orange for Mikey since it's a chill color and purple for Donatello since well.. you know.

Gonna need to see a citation about that. And if it's "many interviews" then that shouldn't be too difficult, right?

What a cruel twist of irony for Donny.
