Has anyone else notices that these two things are utterly SCREWED up? It's insane. Follow me on this rant, Kids.

The Nursery Ryhme: High in the tree tops, the cradle will rock, when the bow breaks, the cradle will fall, down comes baby, craddle and all.

Ok, what the hell ? Why sing that to some poor baby before bed? It's like saying "I'll hang you from a tree and if you move you'll snap your neck and die. . .GOOD NIGHT KIDDO!"

And Alice In Wonderland. Girl falls into a hole, over 40 stories deep, and lives, talks to cats that smile, talks to two perverted brothers, eats shrooms, and kills a bunch of card men.

Ok.
So.

Let's get this straight: Girl falls into a sewer system, talks to rabbid, foaming animals(who are obsessed with time and riddles), and eat shrooms.

And children's TV. . .This is one rant that will go on till the day I die.

Mr. Rodgers. Ok. . . This guy is the craziest person I've EVER seen. The guy buys a house with puppets that live in his walls. He has an Absolute Monarchy inbetween his 2x4's. Not to mention that those puppets want to kill him. Don't say you didn't know, ever see that King's googly eyes? Googly eyes of MURDER! Mr. Rodgers is also an anarchist, notice the street signs and street lights in his kitchen.

Quick question: How does he fast forward or rewind (not to mention eject) those tapes the Mailman gives him EVERYDAY? The VCR is set behing Bricks,so's the TV. His electric bill must be sky high. So much for a DVD upgrade, right? And the Mailman. He never got a name, just "My friend, and your friend, the Mailman." The guy is Uber creepy. He has Opera glasses... and stops to talk to Mr. Rodgers everyday? He must be a junkie of some sort, or pretty damn close to getting fired.

Seasame Street is kinda creepy too. Puppets. Lots. And Lots of Puppets. . .

Oh, my goodness . . . :o

*Shakes his head to make sense of things*

Um, yes, this should be in the General Discussion section.

Better yet, just delete this topic...you're the one with the messed up mind, my friend.

Yet at the same time, a lot of nursery rhymes didn't start out that way. For instance, "Ring Around The Rosie" was actually a description of the great plague (the "ashes" was a mispronunciation of "astioo", a sneeze).

Still, alot of nursery rhymes and fairy tales were parodies of real events and people. They were often disturbing (ever read the original Little Mermaid or Cinderella?) but that was to get points across. When they were written, they didn't believe that every story had to have a "happy ending" just that there was a moral or point behind it. They were gruesome to show the consequences of actions and scare little kids into being good.

Though everyone in my circle does think Alice in Wonderland was written while the author was high. Man, I hate that story.

AND there are many modern "fractured fairy tales" which are traditional fairy tales that are rewritten and completely twisted around. I wouldn't read those to kids, because most of them are written for adults anyway.

And do NOT get my started on Barney and Tele Tubbies.

Brodie, I got yer back man.

You've hit a topic close to my heart.

It's my opinion that the raise in average life expectancy and improvement in general quality of life has led us to segregate our narratives: flashy for the adults, and sappy-crappy for the kiddies. Let's face it. The average Mini-Van Soccer Mom just doesn't read All Quiet on the Western Front to her children as a warning against the horrors of war.

Yep, Narrative is pulling its punches now (in the category of children's literature.) It's a material world and we're all material girls -- or boys --
and a "popular" story now is one with a bank roll behind it. Example? Disney.

OH HOW I YEARN FOR THE GOOD OL' DAYS... when illiteracy and religion ran rampant and a GOOD story had a moral and some supernatural Booga-Booga in it that were guaranteed to scared the holy hotpants off the little ankle-biters. **If you can't get the children to behave, then TRAUMATIZE the little buggers.**

<sigh> Now it's milk and cookies. If you really wanna be disturbed, you've gotta watch Entertainment Tonight....

Oh, and incidentally, Lewis Carroll WAS an opium addict, but he was an opium addict living in the late 1800's, so that's ok. He was also a Mathematics professor -- which goes a long way to explain the weirdness and the chessmen....

I agree. Fairy Tales are messed up.

Hey, you didn't think the 'Brothers Grimm' were just born with that name, did you?

what!!!!!!

And Alice In Wonderland. Girl falls into a hole, over 40 stories deep, and lives, talks to cats that smile, talks to two perverted brothers, eats shrooms, and kills a bunch of card men.

How are they perverted?
She eats MUshrooms you junkie!
OK you have played 1 too many games little one! She NEVER kills any1 in the story! I would know, I've read it & seen the cartoon &the play & the play IS the same as the story!

(ever read the original Little Mermaid or Cinderella?)

What happened in the stories to make them so "unhappy"?

*grins* Well, in the original The Little Mermaid, the mermaid got her tongue cut out, didn't just loose her voice. And when she failed to win her Prince Charaming, she died. Moral: Don't go changing for other people.

And Cinderella, that was gruesome. The evil step sisters actually cut off pieces of their feet to try and fit into the glass slipper. Shows what people will do if they really want something.

Hansel and Gretal, they get eaten by a witch. Little Red Riding Hood and her Grandmother get eaten by a wolf, and the wolf is later killed.

This wasn't a "shelter the children" society that created these stories.

if you're looking for a EXCELLENT adaptation of a classic... I reccommend Jane Yolen's Briar Rose.

it's an incredibly powerful holocaust/fairytale crossover... a Survivor Story, but you're still gonna need a box of kleenex. If you liked the whole "Sleeping Beauty" story YOU"VE GOTTA READ THIS. it's only ~240pages.... and it's sold as a CHILDREN's book.... I'm 22 and it blew me away.

the inside cover reads:

"A mist. A great mist. It covered the entire kingdom. And everyone in it -- the good people and the not-so-good, the young people and the not-so young, and even Briar Rose's mother and father fell asleep. Everyone slept: lords and ladies, teachers and tummlers, dogs and doves, rabbits and rabbitzen and all kinds of citizens. So fast asleep they were, they were not able to wake up for a hundred years. Are you a hundred years Gemma?"
"Not yet."
"I'm six."
"Not yet."
"Is a hundred a lot?"
"A hundred years is forever."

i implore you to go read this.

Hmm I am currently reading the real Peter Pan story and boy is it different from the disney take

I can remember watching a programme on the origins of Nursery Rhymes, one that sticks in my mind was The House That Jack Built. The original rhyme dates back to the second world war. The original worsds are:

This is the House that Jack Built
This is the bomb that fell on the house that Jack built
This is the Hun, that dropped the bomb, that fell on the house that jack built
This is the bullet that killed the hun, that dropped the bomb, that fell on the house that jack built
This is the gun, that fired the bullet, that killed the Hun, that dropped the bomb that fell on the house that Jack built.

Weird huh!?!

Shrooms are mushrooms, and I wouldn't make much more of it if the effect of the mushrooms made her hullocinate(sp), and make her change and such. The Catterpillar on the mushroom smoking was another odd topic. You know what he was smoking, hell, the guy who drew the Disney one drew a pipe/bowl. And they use the same type thing in the movie Half Baked.

Children's tv and children's stories are messed up.

The only thing that you can count on in this world is Spider-Man and Ninja Turtles...

Peter Parker may be a pussy, But I'd like to see how Batty would fare against Venom or Carnage...

BATMAN is the BOMB...

just some guy with LOTS of money, a deep PERSONAL GRUDGE, and LOTS AND LOTS of training. BAIN BROKE HIS BACK and he STILL recovered and FOUGHT CRIME. AND when it was all said and done, he TOOK OUT BAIN. ...

His costume is cooler.
His premise kicks so much more ass on the "macho" scale.
HE NEVER KILLED THE HOT CHICK HE WAS TRYING TO RESCUE (cough cough *Stacy Grey* cough cough).
He's probably just as psychologically damaged as the freaks he's put away in Arkham.
His BUTLER has COMBAT TRAINING.

and he don't need no day job.

Well, duh! What do you think I made this thread for? Any and all of my threads are for ranting, I rant about EVERYTHING. If I rant about Mr. Rodgers you can rant about Teletubbies and Barney.
