i put aluminum foil in my teeth and pretended to have platinum in it. i could've brung my extremely ugly freddie kruger mask, but i forgot it was halloween.

anyway... i saw a leonardo with a cardboard shell, a sword (which looked nothing like a kitana), and a blue bandana. it was a pretty nice home-made costume if you ask me. :tlol:

anyway, i don't celebraet halloween either. it's been since 1st grade since i last did. that's a pretty looooooooong time! and i was bart simpson at the time. oh well. where were the ninja turtle costumes during that time?

hmmm... i'd give you a mango for that little situation, but i'm getting watched over by machias cuz i've been handing out "alotta bit of (i know you love that new phrase of mine)" counterfeit mangos. but, maybe 363 days from today (Nov. 2, 2002), it'll be better.

I ended up dressing up as Ash from the Evil Dead movie series, chased some kids down the street with a chainsaw. It was cool, I had fake blood and sweat all over my face and a torn up dress shirt. I still have to get the dye out of my hair though. . . Ash rocks.

okay, two things.

one) that line of thinking is divisive. its exactly what leads to wars and the like.

two) Halloween is actually a CHRISTIAN holiday that the church created.

humor.

i dont know about what church you go to.... but the truth is that the Roman Catholic Church 'adapted' a previously pagan holiday to suit their needs. its not the first time they had done it, Christmas and Easter were the same.

two) Halloween is actually a CHRISTIAN holiday that the church created.Wrong...its roots begin LONG before the Christians even took over the Celts. In short, it's pretty much the celebration of the Celtic New Year. My mom's Wiccan, an REAL one at that, not a fake goth who claims he or she is Wiccan.

Wrong...its roots begin LONG before the Christians even took over the Celts. In short, it's pretty much the celebration of the Celtic New Year.

Yes, and I could pose similar arguments about Passover, Christmas, and Easter. These were all originally pagan holidays that the Judeo-Christian forces adapted to their purposes (probably to make the religions more 'acceptable' to the popular culture at the time). What I meant was that Halloween as it is practiced now is a Roman Catholic adaptation of an originally pagan custom.

I'm sorry if this offends anybody, but then again truth should only be offensive to those that lie to themselves. I do believe that religion has its purposes and is needed, but be aware of the historical 'ambiguities' of the mainline religions.

My mom's Wiccan, an REAL one at that, not a fake goth who claims he or she is Wiccan.

Really? What kind of Wiccan? The pagan, Christian, or new age??

The word 'wicca' is actually old english (i think) and it originally referred to a very........ 'occult' sect of Christianity in the Middle Ages. All forms of pagan witchcraft (particularly celtics and druidism) were later identified with this title as well. There is also new age wicca, a religion created about 50 years ago by a British anthropologist, by integrating the witchcraft traditions of several dozen different cultures....

so which one is your mother???

No one should be offended if we talk about the church. Everyone knows about the crusades and selling forgivness. Thats just history, Not something someone should be offended by.

Hallowen is a holiday created by Celts, and Pagans are offshoots of Celtics, and Wiccans are offshoots of Pagans, or are Pagans and use the term "Wiccans". Each religion has adapted to Halloween, and so far I only know of one or two religions that don't celibrat Halloween, one being Jahova's Witness. Sure, sometimes some families don't let the little buggers go out and take candy from old people who dress up in Groucho Marx costumes, but most do.

I think the arguement is pointless, I don't think anyone is lying, or that any of you guys are wrong, to each his own. It's the way people are taught to believe...whoa...Way too Preacher-ish...

Anyways.

Ash still rocks.

actually, the word 'wicca' is an old english phrase that referred to an esoteric sect of Christianity in the Middle Ages that were later wiped out. only later did people start referring to the so-called pagans (particularly the druids and celts) the same way. the original wiccans may have had contact with and/or been influenced by the celts. but they were still considered 'christian'.

the word 'pagan' is greek in origin (i believe) and it actually referred to ANY religious tradition that was unconventional..... originally, this primarily meant the Greek philosophers and the Mystery Schools, but later it came to refer to all non-Christian traditions.

i think all this fear of 'offending' someone is complete and utter nonsense (which South Park delightfully mocked in their first Christmas episode). I may be a hardcore Mirage fan and thus any reference to the cartoon 'disgusts' and 'offends' me. alright, no one can talk about the tmnt cartoon anymore!! see the logic here?? anyone could possibly be offended by ANYTHING!!!

Well one's religion is a bit more deepr thing, some people could get offended, but as i said there is no reason if people just talk about the facts.

heretic888
11-03-2002, 09:10 PM
they would be if their religion was based upon non-literal myths (as most are) and thus did not coincide with historical truths and facts.

But ridiculing (or attacking) the religions of others is the kind of topic that starts flame wars, and I would like to avoid that on these forums, since it tends to drive away new members (and current ones, in some cases). Do you understand my logic now? And I don't watch South Park, so I could care less what they do. :P

So did you take any pictures?

Brodie

No pictures, mostly because I did the costume myself and no one was home. I looked cool, but if I did it when my 'rents were home I'd be in trouble. Being as chasing 5 year olds with a running chainsaw is frowned upon.

I even had my...BOOMSTICK!
