Hey,
As a Spider-man fan i felt that we should have a thread to discuss the recent movements in the Spidey comics....
In the most recent Spectacular, Peter goes to Paris to find Sara, one of Gwen's twins. One proplem, as Pete is about to bed down, he calls MJ it's 7:00 am in New York, but if it was 7:00 in NY then in Pari it would be what....1:00 in the afternoon....whoops!!!

Jet-lag, my friend. Jet-lag.

This is great and its just like the Spider-man discussion on the GD forums. Any of you guys know of any of some good retro Spider-Man comics? Like the first appearence of the Lizard or somethin' like that? Well help me out however you can. Thanks.

Well, the volumes of Essential Spider-Man contain most of the first appearances in them. But they're black and white and printed on newsprint (hence why they're so cheap), which isn't the best way to read the stories. You could always pick up the Amazing Spider-Man anniversary disc Marvel just put out. Contains what close to every issue of the Amazing Spider-Man up until the near-present.
My selections for TPB?
The Death of Gwen Stacy: It starts out as a big anti-drug public service anouncement, but turns around for the last two issues. A true classic and one of the few good comics Stan Lee's ever written (brilliant mind, bad writer).
Son of the Goblin: The definitive collection of the Harry Osbourne/Green Goblin saga. His redemption at the end is one of the best moments in the series.

Gwen Stacy's death was written by Marv Wolfman, not Lee, and was issues apart from the three part "Anti-drug" storyline written by Lee, which actually IS pretty damn good.
The trade paperback reprints the three part story because it sets up Harry's drug use and Osborn's return as the Green Goblin...
"Sins Past" and "Sins Remembered" are damn good story-arcs, at first I thought this would be the Clone saga all over again, but it's been handled with a degree of respect and deapth, that's how great J.M.S and Jenkins are as writers.

Ah, I just read the TPB and assumed everything was written by Lee.
And no matter what, the anti-drug arc reads horribly. I'm aware of how significant it was to the industry and that it didn't get the comics code approval, but regardless it's extremely preachy. Felt like I was reading an issue of Green Lantern/Green Arrow...only not as good.

I read a reprint of ASM Vol 1 #129 yesterday. That one's good cuz the plot was creative and the action was great. I liked how Punisher and Jackal teamed up. Even though Spidey duped 'em it was intresting to see 'em team up like that. Its great that the comic was free with the Marvel Legends movie Punisher figure. The comic was also the first appearence of Punisher and Jackal. I wonder if there gonna team up again? http://samruby.com/AmazingSpider-ManF/AmazSpid129_small.JPG

Did the comics ever do the further spider mutation storyline? (It would seem safe to assume so). I remember seeing The Punisher almost killing Spidey before he mutates. I loved that whole story arc on the 90s cartoon as a kid

I have the actual first printing of this. 8)
I'm not sure of the mutation thing. I don't think Marvel touched base on it that much. There were scattered stories about him mutating, but nothing that garnered a full story.

The 90's arc when Spidey turns into Man-Spider was done in the comics, but the Punisher wasn't involved. I'd have to go look it up again, but Spidey has mutated into all sorts of things from Spider-Hulk to Spider-Lizard.

Wrong.
"Maximum Carnage" and "Seperate Anxiety" were based on the comics, there was only one game based on the 90's cartoon.

"Spider-Man" featured the option to select Fantasic Four members as special weapons, and bosses included Allyster Smythe, Shocker, and Green Goblin.
And stop telling me facts about the games that I already know, it has nothing to do with the subject.

The Doppelganger was created in the Infinity War saga...if I remember right evil clones were made of almost every character, but the only ones who lived were Doppelganger and Demogoblin. Then they came to play in the Maximum Carnage story.
This new Sins Past / Remembered story is alright... It seems a little rushed and I think Sara is going to try to get "close" to Peter. I still don't like Norman Osborn returning from the dead, but this story's not bad. Harry should definitely stay dead though. (he won't)
Voltron
02-27-2005, 09:55 PM
Demogoblin wasn't a doppleganger, was he? I remember demogoblin being a demon that possessed hobgoblin, then when the two entities separated one went on as hobgoblin and the other as demogoblin. It was in the whole Ghost Rider/Venom/Spidey Spirits of Vengeance story arc or something to that effect.

Yeah. Stan Lee and Don Heck were heavy into the hookah. Never heard of creativity, have you?

I think Bucky and Harry Osborn are the only two Marvel characters that will stay dead. Why? Because of the impact their deaths had on the book headliners, Captain America and Spider-Man, respectively.

I never thought they'd bring back Norman since he had such a classic demise, but they did. Also they haven't brought back Gwen Stacy (except for the clone...and her dead ringer offspring).
Sorry about the Demogoblin info..I probably haven't read any of that stuff since it came out, my memories are fading.

It was at the very end of the Revelations story arc. I think you can still get that in TPB.
Basically, Norman come back from the dead, stuff happens, he impales Ben on his goblin-glider and Ben disintegrates, leaving Peter finally sure, beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is the one true Spider-Man. And I spoiler-tagged the end of a 10-year old comic book because there are a lot of whiney Nancys on this board who will complain that I spoiled it.

Don't worry, they did, and due to the general disgust at how the story was dragge on, crippling EVERY Spidy title (until the movie came out), Marvel have refused to even acknowledge the story arc and any character involved ever again.

As for the topic, as bad/confusing the clone saga was back in the day, they have gotten better. I'm especially enjoying Ultimate Spidey lately. Ther was this one issue where Doc Ock had him captured and found out who Spidey was. I've never seen Doc Ock so evil before.
Btw. Doc Ock: is he blind? In ultimate he has these scar-like looking things around his eyes? Also in the movie (of which I know that it hasn't got any connection to the comic books) I kept wondering.

Well, I don't know if it was mentioned in the movie itself, but I think in the comic adaption of the movie he had to wear the shades because his eyes were damaged by the flash of the explosion. He didn't go fully blind though.

X-Men don't count. That team always fluxuates in life and death. I thought Black Tom was dead until the recent "Heroes & Villains" story. Pretty soon, Magneto will come back.
As for Norman, I think his resurrection was pretty well explained.
Adam Warlock? How could he stay dead?
But I do agree with the Aunt May nod. That old crow needs to go. Who else thought, "Finally!" when she "passed away" back in Amazing #400?
Anarky

Why don't the X-men count? I mean, they are the prime example of how dead a death in the Marvel Universe is.
Sort of: "Oh god, I'm hurt pretty bad, I have lost 99% of my blood, inner organs and limbs... I'm going to die"
"No... not you!"
"Don't worry, I'll see you in three months."

I can't speak for the Ultimate universe, as I don't read that book, but in the 616 Universe (regular universe) his eyes are EXTREMELY sensetive to light, due to the explosion that caused the tentecles to fuse to his spine in the first place. This weakness factors heavily into his defeat in Spider-Man/Doctor Octopus: Negative Exposure.
And I have an issue of Spider-Man from the era of the Clone Saga that reminds me of the issue you just mentioned. Basically, Doctor Octopus gets a hold of Spidey, but Spidey's dying. So he saves his life (even giving mouth-to-mouth) and discoveres his identity. And with Spider-Man at his mercy...he calls the police and has himself arrested. Apparantly he makes ammends with Spider-Man, as he's grown a respect for him after all the years of fighting. But then he ends up getting murdered by Kaine. Ah well.
Not even remotely as terrible as the Light the Night story arc, where Electro reforms after Spider-Man saves his life. They hug in that issue.

Because their characters are too flexible. Being mutants, there's always a way to explain how they come back. They're not human. They're "homo superior". That basically makes them fair game to be toyed with in stories dealing with death.

It had something to do with soul energy transference, Stunner (Doc's virtual reality girlfreind who was really an obese woman projecting herself through a solid, virtual reality body...keep with me here) sacrificed her energy so it would travel into Ock's corpse and resusitate him.
Naturally, Ock did'nt come back as a rotting corpse, he came back fully healthy, had all of his memories back, but convinentantly, he did'nt know anything of Spidy's identity, and tried to kill him...
...Good lord.

But you can't tell me that every other mutant has the "perma-life-despite-death"-Genes. The way they bring back mutants and humans alike is just insane.
"What brought you back?"
"The big universal soda-pop can of Justice!"
"Wow, that is so awesome, glad to have you back"
...
That gives me an idea: Imagine this, some character coming back to life, not knowing how and then he sort of goes on a quest to find out who or what brought him back. That would give the authors time to invent something that could make sense.

The Doc Ock Spider-Man 2 action figure's glasses don't stay on very well. I wish Toybiz made it so his glasses could stay on better cuz his face sculpt without his galsses makes him look like a wussy.

I don't collect the Ultimate line. I really don't need to, since it was started to gain new readers in the first place, and to retell his origin and what-not. I'm not a new reader, and I know his origin so I had no need to collect Ultimate Spider-Man.

Actually, Ultimate Spider-Man was ten times superior to most, if not ALL, the Spidy comics when it began, sure it was a retelling of the origins, but it was done in such an original way, it put the current universe to shame.
I recommend you read some of the TPBs, that's not to say the current comics are'nt any good now (Jenkins, J.M.S, Marvel Knights, need I say more?)

I've been reading my housemate's Ultimate Spiderman TPBs while he reads my Ultimate X-Men ones. The last one I read, #7 I think, was pretty cool. When Spiderman tries to get Geldoff to use his powers for good and the X-Men show up.
The humour in that was brilliant. With Spiderman's homemade mask and one of the lenses popping out 'Okay, nobody move, there's a small glass lens here somewhere...no lady, don't...!'
Or the meeting with Jean Grey:
'Nice to meet you, Peter, and it's good to know you're the first person who hasn't pictured me naked...until now'.
Then there's half a page of reactions.
'You done yet?'....more reactions
'Okay, I'm done'...'Okay, now I'm done'...'I'm finished'...'I'm...'
Or the little picture of Professor Xavier's camp shock in Peter's imagining of grabbing Geldoff and escaping the X-Mansion
A lot of laughs that TPB

Anyone read the conclusion to "Skin Deep?"
Whilst not as good as "Sins Past", it did try to give Spidy a more emotionally invested enemy.
The Parker Home being destroyed was predictable at the conclusion though, but we've seen a far better shake-up in Spdiy's life than Gwen banging Norman Osborn ever was...
