View Full Version : Should there be a new movie?

Well, since I was born in late 1989 it was a bit late for me to watch the original TMNT and remember it. I haven't seen any of the movies either, but I dunno if I like the idea of actors in costumes. Personally I'd prefer animation, though in these days computer-modulated 3D characters are also possible (like in "The Hulk"). Anyways, it was the new series that first got me interested -I've since read many reviews about the old episodes, they seem alright. However, I thought it was unfortunate that a new movie wasn't released, I'm hoping that there will be one sometime in the future. :) What do you guys think? If a movie really was coming out would anyone watch it? Any ideas for the new movie? I'd love to hear them! :D

A new movie is always a topic here, personally, whilst I would like to see another one, the first film was the most adequete adapation of the comics

Since you say you havent seen any of the movies yet, you must see the first one. Believe me, the actors/costumes/voices are believable.
I hope like crazy they make a new one, either restarting the whole thing over or continuing after the 2nd movie as if the 3rd never existed cause it sucked.
NO CGI/Live action combination, no way no how. They'd have turtles bounding off of bldg's like Daredevil..man that was lame. It'd take away the realism of the film. These are stocky but strong chelonian mutants, they can't go bounding off things like that or do unrealistic tricks. Real people, stunt guys and martial artists are THE way to go.
Man you were born when I was in high school! I still feel old...

ditto on that. last month i finally saw the first movie! :D and saw the cover of the third movie  my god, the turtles looked like frogs! :dead:
but for me, the CGI/Live combo might work. just as an example - Wolverine from X-men 2 - his claws were sometimes CGI, or maybe real (like in the fight with Deathstrike) it could work, but i prefur real action most of the time. it depends on how the specal effects come into play. but you'll never know, it could be animation like the new show. i have a feeling it'll go that way because the lil' kids are to used to seeing the new turtles on TV

TMNT 1 is one of my all time favorite movies. I still get chills when Shredder arrives at the final battle. If there were to be a new movie, I'd like it to be actors in costumes.

There was a movie in the works with Hallmark. Yes u heard me right, HALLMARK!! This may sound cheesy but Peter said the Splinter and other costume tests he saw were awesome....saddly the movie was shelved....:( i'd love to at least see the costumes....

John Woo was supposed to make the next movie be I guess he dropped the project
Live-action is the best way to go. Why? Because the other three were as well. Why stop? Also, as for plot, I seriously think there should be a sequel to the second film. Have a fourth film that takes place after TMNT III, but continues from TMNT II. Think about it, and it makes sense. Perhaps make a fourth film without the "IV" or "4" in the title, but still be a sequel. Use old footage for a backstory and off we go. Professor Perry would be an Utrom, a rogue Utrom named Krang resurrects Shredder on the pier and they team up to destroy the turtles and take over the city, then later the world. Introduce the Fugitoid and the Triceratons for a fifth film.
No Silver Sentry, no Guardians, hardly anything that could tie it to the new toon. If anything, have the voice actors featured and perhaps some Elite Foot and Foot Tech Soldiers. But that's about it. I say this because too many characters clog up the story. Foot Soldiers only serve as filler for fight scenes, but Sentry and the Guardians means more plot points and more backstory, something that isn't needed.

if it was the darker tone of the 1st movie/comics then I'd like to see it with almost no CGI. Pure Puppets and all no CGI.

That John Woo thing was just a rumor, he was never attached. I think the first movie was great and there really doesn't need to be a new one. The new show satisfies my taste for tmnt. Though if they did make a new one, I'd definitely go see it. It would be cool if they did a live action adaptation of the mousers/baxter story, or the utroms/triceratons.

The first movie still holds up as one of the best comic to film movies ever. It really works as a film.
I found it quite funny that someone is asking a message boards full of TMNT fans if they think a new TMNT movie should be made? Are you expecting a lot of "No, please no more TMNT!" replies? lol

Hey, by the looks of things most people would recommend the first movie. As said before, I've never seen it (I have read the plot and viewed some online screencaps mind you.) But that's just not the same to actually watching the movie itself. :ohwell: I will definitely rent it if I can find it though. :)
And as for the live action Vs animation, even though I'd prefer animation (cause I'm use to it) I probably wouldn't detest live action either. To be honest, my negative impression of live action films first began when I saw a foreign movie that was something like Power Rangers in the late 90's. It was so fake you'd feel    watching it. But I won't compare the TMNT to that.

I agree with the majority here. Que, you HAVE to watch the first movie. No turtle fan should go without seeing that awesome film at least once. The other two movies aren't as good as the first, but they do have their moments. The second movie had lots of funny moments, but the turtles were reduced to fighting without their weapons (thanks to overly sensitive parents at the time). And who could forget the infamous Vanilla Ice scene? The third movie has horrible costumes because Jim Henson's company wasn't involved with the film. Despite this, the movie does have some good scenes, like Raph developing a friendship with a little kid. Plus, the fight scenes are much better than the second movie. They use their weapons a little more frequently this time around.
As for the fourth movie... The original idea was a CGI project that was supposed to be produced by John Woo's company. He was never to be involved in the role of director. This project never got off the ground due to lack of support from major movie companies. The second project was scheduled to be a mini-series made by Hallmark. Like jester mentioned, Peter got to see the costumes first hand, and the Splinter one even underwent several motion tests. Unfortunately, the project was scrapped... Don't remember the exact reasons why, but Dan Berger sent out an official e-mail to the fan list confirming this.
Recently, another rumor about a possible fourth movie has sprung up. Peter Laird mentioned something about a big project in the works in his letters column for the Mirage comics (about two or three issues ago). He didn't want to reveal any more before details were ironed out. As of now, we're still waiting for any word on what this project might be...

While I think it's a no-brainer to do a new TMNT movie, I think the best bet is to sequelize the first movie, without contradicting the second two.
You *could* scrap the old continuity, and start over, but to what end? Viewers already saw the origin, and most people know the story. And as it's been said here, the first movie was, really, the *best* interpretation of the early Eastman and Laird issues. By adapting Issues 1, 2, 3, 4, 10, 11, and both the Raph and Leo minis, they took the meat of the turtles fight with the Foot clan, and told one solid story.
The second two flicks were frivalous, and did nothing to add to the first. Shredder returning was hackneyed, Casey dropping out in favor of boosting an actor's career... nothing of the flick made sense.
So you start the new movie with Shredder dead. This doesn't contradict the second movie, but makes sense if you only watch the first one too. Return to New York was done in spirit, if not in practice, in the first movie, so you sort of have to move to the next big event: City At War. It's the best storyline for a number of reasons
1) It's the turtles vs the Foot... the basic premise of the property. People will recognize it, and not feel lost.
2) There *is* a Shredder in the story, and you can use that in trailers to entice people. Of course it turns out to be Karai, but that's a surprise for the audience.
3) The story is much darker, fitting a more adult-directed flick, and there's tons of character development potential in Casey and April, even if you fudge with the storylines from the actual book (IE, keeping both in New York, but going their seperate ways).
4) The ending allows for non-Foot sequels, since the audience will learn of he peace accord between Karai and the turtles. *Then* you could do Turtles with the Utroms and Triceratons... once you've hooked a fresh audience.
I like that idea. I'd definitely prefer that instead of alien invasions and worlds. But producers want a huge audience, and would try to get the movie as close to the cartoon as possible, aiming for the kids. They'd most likely want the Utroms now instead of waiting.

Ive always thought that City At War is the next likely movie step, what with the Shredder gone. I would enjoy seeing some Foot Elites thrown in there too, and it has to be back like the first one. I think Peter Laird knows his mistake by kiddin up the last two, and will make the next one like the first one, or even More like the old comics.

The 4th movie should be about City at War, but the REAL one, not the cartoony one. I mean the Foot fighting amongst themselves, the TMNT meeting Karai and the bit about Leo not wanting to deal with the Foot anymore but has to because the Shredder Elite (as they were called in the comics) sworn to kill the TMNT (since in the movies it wasa team effort to defeat Shredder, not just Leo). So they agree to help Karai defeat the Shredder Elite with the promise of being left alone after this.
The only thing that would have to be changed is to, of course, make the TMNT act as silly and goofy (maybe to a lesser extent?) like they did in the other movies so it wouldn't look so drastic from 3 movies to this one, and you know, stick April and Casey in there somewhere. I mean, City at War didn't take place THAT much longer after when Shredder died, so it should take place like a month or so after TMNT III.

I think they should make a movie but as a cartoon. Similar to what, dare I say Pokemon does. There, I've said it! Seriously. Continue the show but bring it to the big screen with a whole lot of top of the line animation and a great story line that gives the characters even more depth. Have this be like the Shredders Final End but include a lot of interesting new characters.

There should not be a movie because of one big reason: CGI
The turtles would all be CGI, there'd be like 3 real Foot Soldiers and the rest would be computer animated. I bet even most of Shredder's armor would be CGI. It would be like watching a 3D cartoon, much like with some of Star Wars. So unless they actually used actors, puppets, and animatronics, and real backgrounds, there should NOT be a new TMNT movie.

The first movie was actually a very high grossing movie. Everyone knows that it was the best grossing out of the 3. It had everything in the movie and I was glad to see the battle between the turtles and Shredder was every where near as apocolyptic as any other battle. The second just didn't hit climax with me.
The way to go with the next movie would to retell the story. They're doing it so much with other movies now: Batman Begins, Superman Returns, etc. Make the Shredder darker than what he was in the first one... more like he was in the first season of the new series.
Of Coarse... if Mirage and the studio funding this movie went CGI, I would probably wind up killing myself. CG is so over done now a days. Yes, it's cool for special effects, but I loved the older ones when they didn't do CG at all. Live action would be top notch, again... but DO NOT make the outfits look like they did in the 3rd movie. That would be balls and I hate that! Technology is so much more advanced now, the mouths should look up to par and the battles would be great!
But I also want a "Return To New York" feel to the final battle between the Turtles and Shredder!
...Any thoughts?
"City at War" sounds like a good approach.

I think for the new movie they should totally start over with it and not have it as a sequel like Batman begins. It been too long since the last set of movies to have a sequel. It should be based off of the new cartoon so new fans can be more familar with it but have it more darker and mature. It will be something differnt for us fans that seen the old turtle movies and was around for the old toon. But i will have the turtles closer to the comics on how the way they act and not have mikey act so goofy. It can also be the first movie of a new trilogy so they can build on the story more. I would have a battle with the foot and hun in the first movie with the turtles meeting casey and april. The guardians can also be introduced along with Saki and the guardians can help the turtles at the end of the movie defeat someone like hun or a new foe. For the second movie the can battle shredder and the third can be city at war. As for the effects, i prefer live mixed with cgi, simular to the Hulk. With cgi turtles, u can make them do more in terms of fighting and body language that u couldn't do with a man in a costume, just make it real looking.

Hall of lost legends or something like that wouldn't be do-able because it is by a different artist. Even though AC Farley was with them a lot, hes not a specifically-Mirage artist. Thats why they can't do anything for the new show like adaptations for things like THE RIVER and stuff like that, so it would have to be something done by a Mirage In-house artist or a story that was put toghether by someone like Mr Laird

I actually DO care what kind of movie we get, we don't want another Ninja Turtles 3.
I don't think a movie based on "Hall of Lost Legends" would work. It wouldn't grab an audience. If a fourth movie were to be made, it would tie closely with developments of the new cartoon in order to get the kids' attention, yet also it would need to have that flavor that keeps the old fans coming back.
You could slap TMNT on anything and kids would eat it up, but that's only half the audience. Hollywood doesn't want half.

Crow made a really good point, in general. It needs to be something that us hardcore fans want. Even if the move gains a PG-13 rating, it'll still attract the younger generations. It's all about the marketing.
Now, of coarse, they're going to show TV spots on Nickelodian and other kiddie channels, which they'll leave most of the adult content out. It'll attract them...
But they'll also show spots on more adult channels like Spike, MTV, etc. showing more adultish themes. This will click with the older gens. Can you imagine, though, the impact that this movie will have? Coverage and publicity would/should be off the charts....
Only, and only if they market it right for both generations... I wish I was out of school so I could show them how to do it... ;)

I think a new movie would be a pretty good idea. I think following the story-line of the turtles by going into the city-at-war story would be a perfect fit. I think Stockman would be a good villan with machine-minnions, fighting with the disrupted foot (with elite foot of course) would rock. It would be a story that would fit in, although no doubt there would be changes to make it a bigger "blockbuster" than true to the turtle's roots. Turtles 3, although I love it, should be completely stricken from the record (for plot purposes).
I think a 3D film would be most appropriate as well, providing the turtles aren't jumping over buildings and doging bullets matrix style. Stick to ninjitsu for sure, not super mutant powers.

Here's some ideas/opinions I have on a new Ninja Turtle Movie:
CGI vs. Live Action: Personally, I'd prefer Live Action, but I could overlook that if the plot is well-developed enough. Substance first, sparkle second.
City at War: The idea of City at War does sound like a good idea. It could stay within the movie continuity rather easily and is directly related - like the first movie - to the comics. However, there's one little issue. Odds are, the people making the movie would want to place the movie in the present, and it's been about a decade since the last movie. I doubt that the city would've been at war for that long. Either they'd have to say that the movie's set in the past and have everyone ignore that several actors are 10 years older or recast, or they'd redo the script (Which might be tricky and perhaps not even worth it). Also, another concern is that since 9-11, the general overly-PC public might not like the idea of NYC being a "City at War". In Kevin Eastman's Artobiography, he even mentioned how eerie the NYC landscape with twin towers and the caption "City at War" was after 9-11.
A New Plotline: I'm not so sure about this. I mean, there's already six well-known TMNT continuities, and most likely others: Old 'toon, New 'toon, Mirage Comics, Archie Comics, Movie, and Next Mutation. Adding another might prove a bad idea.
Movie of the New 'Toon: This looks like a good idea. It's what the new generation of Turtle fans are into, it's set in the modern day, there are no issues with continuity, and you gotta admit - it'd be nice to see a 2D Animated movie. The cartoon industry is going CGI-crazy, and some predict the nearing end of 2D cartoons.
Just a sequel to the other three: Hmmm... could any of the other Turtles' villains - from any of the other continuities - work out in movie form? I'd have my doubts about Dregg and H.A.V.O.C., but what about Krang? That'd be a nice heaping bowl of nostalgia for ya'! It could work with the suggested "Perry is an Utrom" idea, or at least have Perry connected with the Utroms. Think of this: It's 10 years later, Perry has retired from the science biz, when he gets a rude and abrupt visit from Krang, who wants all his old research. Unable to extract all the needed info from him, he scans the earth for traces of chemicals he was working with, and among many other samples, he discovers five prime examples of mutagen's effect on living organisms: The Turtles and Splinter! That could work, dontcha think? The only concern this would cause is among those who were faithful to the original comic and hated the cartoon.
Based on the comic today: Here's an idea: if the original movie was based on the comic then, could a new film be based on the comic now? It could be tricky, since several plotlines have been going on for a little while now with no end in sight. Perhaps in a year or two, this could work.
And just to put my two cents in: Don't knock the second movie too badly; it's my favorite, personally. I love some of the lines in it, such as the one found in my signature. Plus both my sister and I love when Don's pushing that Bopping-clown-toy-thingy and saying "Yeah...! Ye- YEAH...!" Hee hee hee... that cracks me up...!
