Well, coverage starts today, and I've already seen quite a few Toy Fair images over at figures.com. Nothing from Playmates yet, but they were one of the first ones up last year(so hopefully the TMNT pictures will be up tonight).

I am so dissapointed with playmates. We have four new figures coming out, then a bunch of turtles and a candy maker. that is inexcusable. Karai looks like the third shredder clone! No new characters have been made or anythign. wtf! No Zanramon, Stockman, Renet, Bishop? Last years toyfair was so preductive, why do the hold off on this years? I dont understand.

Anyone want to tell me who this female Shredder is? I don't think it's Karai...........if it is they definitely changed her body from the last time we saw her;
http://afigures.com/g/?mode=view&album=05_Toy_Fair%2FPlaymates%2FTMNT&pic=01030126.jpg&dispsize=800&start=30
Maybe she's from one of the alternate universes that the turtles get sent to in those time travel episodes
I stopped buying the toys myself their all dissappointing and I dont feel a urge to collect them anymore

Maybe the new figures were not ready in time for Toy Fair? If this is all we have to look forward to this year I'm only buying General Blanq, Yoshi, Feudal Japan Shredder, and Lady Shredder. It almost looks as if the rest of this year will be mostly re-released figures in new packages.
I think the Lady Shredder figure is Karai, I just think PlayMates didn't make the body look like her. Just look at the chest area..... There is no way that looks like Karai just based on that.....

Yeah I'm prety underwhelmed with Playmate's showing. This is supposed to be for major retailer so I would've thought that they would at least have some concept art or something for non turtle figures. Hopefully something will pop up in the next two days even if it's information and not images.
At least the new packaging looks cool.

I know ToyFair isn't over yet, but as a whole, so far it's REALLY lacking. Maybe we'll see some better stuff at the cons this year, but still.
They should do a Zanramon. I'll only get Karai in her Shredder costume(would have liked a regualr Karai though :ohwell: ) and General. I'm not really into the new line anyway and just collect the original stuff pretty much. Only buying a few I like from the new.

hello,
I just saw your toy fair selection for the coming year, and I am very dissapointed with the toy lines direction. Last year you had 30+ new characters portrayed as action figures and you released mostly all of them in good form. You had characters from upcoming episodes that had not been aired. (leatherhead, fugitoid) and you had a good mix of characters that were already in the storyline (Quarry, Foot Mystics, shredder clones) although you didnt release a few of the figures, many were released making my tmnt collection almost double in size by the ned of the year. this year I see repaints and turtle variants, with four figures, four. not one of them stays true to the television show and none of season three's big characters are represented. with the ninja turtles, they have new characters in almost every episode, playmates hasnt even finished making the major players from season one. the diversity is what kept many hooked onto the toy line. with the decreasing acelleration and increasing pointless action figures people have bought the figures simply because it was their favorite character, or that they wanted to replay memerable scenes. If you dont release any characters from season three, how will that work? You are loosing so many loyal costomers by doing this. The figures you do make are usually amazing, but seeing your presance at toy fair, i have no hope for the future of the line, because I will only be buying to four new figures, even if they are off model, but they are my favorite characters. thank you and i hope you take my advice.

I know I'm like, the ONLY playmates advocate left in all of TMNT fandom, but let's not start sending nasty letters and death threats just yet. The year is young, I have a hard time thinking that they will only be releasing four new non TMNT figures this year. We know we're getting more mystics, Karai, Gen, Blanque, Yoshi, F. Shredder, and we'll certainly be seeing Savanti, Renet, and others soon. Just because they aren't ready for toyfair, doesn't mean that they aren't coming at all.
BTW, I must say, the new looking Karai is way better than the other I saw. Although, I know that most of you are pulling out your Playmates toys execs voodoo dolls because they still took creative liberties, you have to admit, this Karai is much improved.
Does anyone still have images of the older Karai?
TheCloneRanger
02-21-2005, 08:03 PM
I never thought I would prefer a simple head-swap, but that's the way Karai was in the show, and it worked. I'm sorry, but I don't need a Shredder with knockers haunting my sleep.
Most of the figures (and lack thereof) are a huge disappointment...in fact, they're making my decision to stop collecting this line a little bit easier. Come on, PM...gimme one more Shadow whatcha-callit, and make it easy on me! Oh, and good job on getting that Sword of Tengu out in a timely matter! It was destroyed what...like a year and a half ago?
That said...the big robot things are kinda cool looking, and I'm LOVING the new package. Long over due, in my opinion. Of course, it would look a lot better without another Leonardo on it...
Anybody besides me concerned over this Monsters and Mutants story arc? I mean, not just for the toys, but for the whole series...
And do we know what this is, or what he's holding?

Anyone else think that TMNT candy maker thing looks cool?
I gotta say in defense of the new Karai, this thing will be much easier to customize, although, I will say for the benefit of those who've said it before, I WOULD like for playmates to make some more show accurate things. Baxter and Karai have been the worst so far, and Baxter has such great figure potential. HOpefully that robo-baxter bot thing isn't the last baxter we'll see.

Just for the record, I am not necessarily flying off the handle at what PM did for Toy Fair. With the way they do their stuff, new toys debut through-out the year on the official site....however, I'm very concerned with the line as a whole. All of the TMNT resculpts, and now ruining decent figures with "artistic" representations. And I'm still leary of the whole M&M thing...heh...M&M.
It looks like they're re-inventing the whole line. But, the bright side...there has to be some Monsters and Mutants for them to catch, right?
All in all, I'm just afraid this is a very accurate cross-section of what's to come. A 1:1 ratio of TMNT resculpts to new characters. Meaning we're getting 4 resculpts to 1 new figure......
Kazari
02-21-2005, 09:17 PM
They need to give up on the old line and start with characters and items that are off from the show...and end this other crap or it will definitely hurt their merchandising.
For me, this initial showing was disappointing but I'm sure Playmates is going to continue with their MO of bringing out new, never-mentioned-before figs throughout the year. Overall, they've been doing a great job IMO so I don't see what they stop now....

I dont see why everyone is making such a huge deal we get new toys added to the line every few months so I'm sure we will be seeing more nee characters soon! Karai! Wow what an improvment from the old sculpt am I the only person to remember her dressing as shredder? she looks great and the toy looks more like the comic version which is totally bad ass finally I say everyone complains about sculpts and this just may finally be the best one I cant wait to see her new face.....anyway keep complaining....see what we got now only turtles and like 3 others.....I will admit that shredder the past one needs some work its to bulky looking.

For a little while I took a hidas from the ninja turtles. It seems as if it might capture my intrest again. They have a hot subway promotion. Plus, there will be a get green program that will allow us to cash in our shell points. If they had that in 1988, almost everyone would do it. Exclusive turtle merchandise. Maybe, I am excited because the shell points are returning. In 1988, they were called pizza points. They also speak of a major snack food manufacturer. Sounds intresting to me. Turtlemania might make a return. I'm really hyped about turtles and monsters. It reminds me of the first four real ghostbusters action figures. I'm surprised they changed the box art for them also. Congrats, Playmates. I salute you. :twink: :thyper:

I believe this is in reference to the press release from Playmates just before the start of Toy Fair. It sounds as though they are going to start adding points to the back of products that can be saved and redeemed for exclusives. This could be cool and quite reasonable given that they already did more or less the same thing with the last half dozen waves of Simpsons figures. I just hope they offer items that were as cool as those offered to Simpson fans.

02-23-2005, 01:42 PM
that would be an excellent way to get Quarry, Klunk, Angel and all the other figures they are too worried about to release in stores!
edit: that means we have to buy this new crap to get points? Oooo, playmates is tricky!
Doubtful. While exclusive figures would be nice (by nice i mean EXCELLENT), it'll probably be terrible stuff. Can you say lunchboxes, notepads, pencils and erasers...
EDIT: Can you provide a link to the pre-Toy Fair press release please?

Wow, what a depressive showing on Playmates' part. It looks like I'm going to be saving even more money this coming year than I did this past one by not buying many--if any at all--TMNT action figures. As much as it pains me to say this, practically all of the figures shown look absolutely horrible. Abysmal sculpts, horrid paint schemes, ugly accessories . . . sheesh. I know it's been said one time too many now, but these really do look like bad Happy Meal toys.
The only positive thing I can say for what we've seen from Toy Fair is that the card/box art is a bit of an improvement over the old. Even still, most of the images used for the "new" card art have already been used for a number of other TMNT products. (Posters, folders, notebooks, etc..) In a way, it's starting to feel like almost all things "TMNT" these days are merely recycled/repackaged products.
Thanks, but I'm not interested.

Ah, thanks Clone Ranger! I'd read that before but must have missed the Get Green part.
Still no word on Gen. He was supposed to be released in January at the latest. I'd say he'll be out soon.
Huh. The only thing really grabbing my attention is the Karai Shredder. Playmates has been pretty damned faithful to the show thus far, so I have to wonder if this means Karai will be taking over Saki's role in the fourth season. The helmet is ginormous, but it still looks kinda neat.
And is this the first appearance of the Donatello statue? Cool to see them all together finally. I need to fall into some money in short order, before they're all released and eventually become hard to get a hold of.

Like most of the responses here, I'm dissappointed with the products shown at Toy Fair, but for a different reason. I don't believe that what was shown was the only product that will be released, I think Playmates just decided to use the same product that was used for the fall "pre-toy fair" plus the new vehicles. If you look at the number of vehicles that were shown, there has to be quite a few more figures in the works that weren't shown. So I guess everyone will just have to keep watching the official site for the news to dribble out.

Sounds like you and I are thinking along the same lines on this one. The showing of this figure has me wondering if Karai will assume the mantle of the Shredder once he's out of the picture. There are a couple of obvious reasons that might lead one to think that Karai in the Shredder-esque get-up is NOT a disguise . . . .

I think some people here are over reacting. This is most certainly not all that Playmates has planned for the rest of the year, not even close. It can't be, or else they'll be done in a month. It's not like they're going to just release Turtle variants and that's it for the rest of the year.
It is true that Playmates had a weak showing at Toy Fair this year. But IMO, almost every company did. Every year Toy Fair gets less and less important, and less major announcements and new product is shown there.
Has anyone tried emailing ninjaturtles.com on this issue yet? That's where we got the release list from last year, and even if they don't have the one for this year we might at least get an explanation for why Playmates was showing off very few of this year's figures.
