Hey Guys, to be honnest this isn't my first post on these boards. I just forgot my old name/password/changed email address, so I thought I would start out anew.
I in no way endorse or provide service to download illegal copies of copyrighted material. I have also read the rules of the forums, and hope that I do not get in trouble for this thread. But on (college) campus here, we have a direct P2P file sharing program, so I downloaded all the original eps from a friend. I know this is not noble by any means, but we do not upload these files or supply them to other people, I simply have them on my computer to enjoy. (By the way, I have totaly no clue how to use Torrent or any of those things, so I have no means of uploading them or sharing, plus I do not want to by any means).
However, I bought season 1 on dvd the day it came out, and are for sure buying season 2 (April 26th is my b-day, so it will be extra special). I have the eps on my computer just because I really love them and can't wait for the DVDs. However, when the DVDs come out, I will be in line to buy them.
So I'm just curious, do you guys think I'm a horrible person? Cause really I do not want to be seen/feel that I am a pirate by any means. I just love the turtles (and will continue my support for them), but I just couldn't resist since it was directly from a friend on campus.
Should I get rid of them? Is this a horrible first impression? I was just curious as to what you guys thought.

I don't see what's so bad about it, since you're even buying the DVD's.
Hell, I obtain all the new episodes through 'alternate' means, since it's the only way for me to watch them.
So no, you're not a bad person, but this is not the place to talk about such activities.

I download episodes all the time, But I use them to make music videos so I have a reason
I dont think your bad! Its not like you can get the old episodes anymore. The DVDs are only up to Season 2*Not just yet* so I dont blame you. As long as you know your going to buy the DVD later then dont feel bad about downloading. I download music all the time but if I like it I am sure to pay for it. However if I dont like it I delete it and never bother with it again. Its my personal honor system
Welcome to the forums ^_^

It's cool to have them on your comp, I have a bunch on discs (damn nearthe whole series) and I'm not a bad person. As long as you don't sell them it's cool-n-the gang, man.

Alright, well I'm glad I wasn't scorned to death by an angry mob. I really like these boards, and often times just read what people say, 'cause I've been out of the TMNT loop for a little while.
And I am for sure buying the DVDs, I mean, what Turtle fan wouldn't? The First season was like $9 at walmart.
Glad to be a part of the best forum dedicated to what my childhood was all about.

I don't think you're a bad person. But just to let you know, I wouldn't rely off d/l stuff on P2P programs from your campus forever. Students here at my campus used to do that too till our schoool got more adminstrative rules and won't allow it anymore. Tho you can also look for eps on eBay as well. I got the entire original series, all 194 eps in avi format, from someone on ebay. At least then you're not d/l them. Hope I'm not a bad person either for mentioning this.

If you are on a network at campus, most likely you are...you can get seriously in trouble for downloading illegal stuff.

It's no big deal. There are people who pirate a lot more than you do, and at least what you're downloading isn't available for purchase or on TV.

Wait a sec... Does it mean downloading stuff which is not avalaible anywhere for purchase is morally justified and... legal? I thought downloading anything that is licensed somewhere is incorrect and prior to persecution, due to the regles of international private law.
And something more. Is there any significant difference between downloading TMNT episode from the net (for free, no payments to the server owner) and recording the same episode using video ord DVD recorder on VHS or DVD? It's just like "downloading" it illegally when it's aired and you record it - and you KNOW you can buy it in the store (and happily transfer your money as a royalty to the TMNT creators). Somehow, both actions are merely the same, right?

i've wondered that myself Rob...what's the diffrence from recording songs of the radio onto tapes and, with technology today, CD, and downloading them from the internet....maybe it's the volume....u just can't get certain songs on the radio. and what's the big diffrence between Dling the new (or old) episodes of tmnt and taping them....I know i for one am buying the DVD's whne they come out...and if i were to miss an ep, i'd tape it, or if i screwed that up, DL it from a friend....buit that wouldn't stop me from buyingthe DVD when it does come out....it's just a tide me over...kinda like listening to a recorded tape from the radio....

I record eps in order to have a chance to watch them whenever I wish to (the same with downloading), I pay only for the VHS tape. If I had better equipment and LOT of time, I'd transfer it to my PC and refine it (unfortunately, I don't possess any know-how to transfer damn things from VHS to PC and I am far too busy now to even try). Result? More or less the same as if I download it :) Yeah, if I want to record and watch the exact episode, I have to wait for a few weeks in case of recording, in comparison to the whole day in maximum in case of downloading, that's what you have mentioned, Jester. But patience is my middle name and I can wait :) And with patience and good soft (able to refine media files) I am able to have the whole season TOTALLY for free, with a bit lower quality, without even downloading it. And it's not illegal  Or is it?
Well of course - if I had a chance to buy original TMNT DVDs where I live now, I'd purchase them even tomorrow. Unfortunately, they are not shipped here :-? And with my mentality of prehistoric man, I don't trust internet stores like amazon.com. Plus, my Internet connection is crap, that dissuades me from downloading anything bigger than 100 Mbs at once. As a result I'm condemned to recording :|

Yeah, talk to Ai Takahashi. That guy is like E-Beard the Pirate.
Personally, I don't understand the difference between taping something and downloading it either. I mean if you have a DVD burner then you can make your own dvd simply by recording something off tv. I don't even need cable to watch most of the programs I'm interested in, w/ the exception of Adult Swim and occasionally something else. So, I've always been perfectly okay w/ downloading tv shows off the net. With that being said I do buy several shows on DVD but others I simply download.

I thought about one possible motive why recording down episodes could be considered legal and downloading them not, albeit both actions are somehow similiar in result (that is getting episodes for your personal frequent use without paying to the creators). The money transfer.
In case of television, subscribers pay to their TV provider, who then pays fee to the concrete TV channel (who has TMNT in its programme). TV channel transfers its remittance to the producer of the show. And the producer pays peanuts to the the creators. Therefore, part of your subscription reaches the authors, so it is fair and legal. We don't mention pirate TV stations who are operating without concession and not willing to pay anything to anyone, though I am aware that people stocking TMNT eps in the Internet and allowing to download them are more like pirate TV owners and not fully licensed broadcasters. But pirate TVs don't air for long nowadays, and alas, if they happen even to air anything, it is never TMNT :|
By contrast, in case of Internet, subscribers pay to their net provider, who doesn't pay anything to the servers filled with movies - and owners of this servers don't pay also etc. And the transfer chain is broken here.
But then... the money you pay to the TV provider, grant you actually the possibility of watching TV, but not recording it! That's just like with the theatres or cinemas. When you pay for the ticket, you purchase the possibility to watch the show ONCE. And recording with your camera the spectacles or movies being "aired" is actually widely prohibited. Moreover, my theory of transfer chain is weakened by the fact the subscriptions are not the main source of financing TV (yeah, the commercials are!). And you pay for everything your provider has in its offer, so you pay probably the fractions of cents for your favourite show. And amount of royalty received by the creators, divided by the number of subcribers is also a veeeery small number, inapropriate to their effort. Royalties from each DVD sold are a bit higher (although not extremely much, I pressume). So, it is not the way to solve my dilemma
One disclaimer - I'm not try to justify people who download lots of stuff instead of purchasing them legally. I just want to rant over this topic, cos' the idea of the similarity attached to me tightly.
Best wishes,
Robweiller

Dude, I use to download of P2P all the time, I only downloaded about 10 eps, but I don't like to have them on my computer or on CD, I want the real thing so I buy them from people and other stuff. And no you are not a bad person.
