Hi Everyone,

I have a feeling I am not alone in this, so I wanted to hear some of your thoughts. How many of you are college graduates in limbo looking to find that first Job in your career feild?

How many of you are finding the process enjoyable?

How many of you are trying to find work in entertainment?

How many of you are frustraighted up to your eye balls?

I thought that since this is a huge network of diverse people, it might not be a bad idea to put together some of our resources and work to the good of all.

I was thinking that we can post specific job intrests and people can replay if they hear of something that might fit.

I'll start:

I'm looking to find work in the entertainment industry. Theatre, Film, TV, Casting, Writing, and so on. I've worked as a stage manager, director, dramaturge, and lesser roles.

I would like to do something were I can work together with people and by myself on projects. I can elaborate more if need be.

Like many of you, I wouldn't mind working in the anime industry, or a related feild, nor would i mind working in live entertainment like theatre.

got any ideas?

I work in a video store. Is that close enough?

Look for a decent job if you want to stay there for awhile.Stressful jobs are a pain.

i don't mind stress one bit. I just want something stable in entertainment.

I applied to turner broadcasting for adult swim actually. have not heard anything, and that's kind of a let down. maybe soon?

*crosses fingers*

I'd love to work as a production assistant, talent scout (for a reputable company like william morris) casting director,

something like that.... breaking into entertainment is hard no matter what side of it you're on.

Maybe you should just get sometimes simple first. You might be shooting for the top a little too quickly.

I agree. It's best to start small, get some more experience, and then shoot higher. That way, with the experience you gathered, you can produce some incredible work, and earn some respect in the company you work for.

I'm just never going to find a job when I get out of college. Computer Science major. How wonderful.

See if you can get someone to read a script or play or something. If they accept it, ask if you can watch it being made or whatever, say you don't want extra creative input but you just want to learn how something like that is made or watch certain roles people play. I'd imagine you could work your way into the industry that way as you gain experience.

Yeah definately start off slow and work your way up. Maybe look into a college course that has a co-op part attached to it. That will give you some experience and will also give you a chance to show the company your potential and they might hire you after your schooling is done. And it can also be paid co-op so that is a bonus.

lol. I applied for an entry level position at cartoon network/adult swim.

In so many ways, that is starting small. I've been in the industry for a very long time, since I was 11, so I have gathered a lot of experience...

even with that, its still hard to break into it.

I'm not looking for an animator job, or anything like that... technical---or production for any production/broadcast company would be acceptable.

you cannot just write a script---though i wouldn't mind writing. But most major companies do not take unsolicited work. You need an agent if you plan to write. You need to land yourself one of those first---and that's no walk in the park.

Thankfully, when I do begin to write, I have made a few connections in new york, one agent works for one of the largest publishing companies, so i'm not so worried there....but i'm no where near ready to sit down and write a script/novel/story. (I do have all the industry programs though...ironically.)

I make it a point to go to writing and industry confrences all the time. NETWORK, network, network. Its all about who you know.

I wish i had a little nepatism thrown my way. lol.

believe me guys, I'm not over reaching... just frustraighted...and I know that I'm not the only one.

In any industry the job market is piss poor. In actuality, I would say the entertainment industry isn't piss poor---just uber competitive.

Wait, you're saying you want to go into entertainment and it's hard yet you have connections but just can't be arsed to sit down and write?
If I had your sorts of connections I'd be writing my ass off so I had at least one decent thing

except, writing isn't what i want to do right now. Its simply not something I have the passion or the drive to sit down and do. Maybe when I am older, or feel like I have something to say...but right now...its not in me.

But, hey...if YOU want to write... go for it!!

I, and this agent I know were having a discussion, and it went something like this:

me: I'm just not interested, i have the talent, but I feel like everything has been said already.

agent: it has been said already. people just need to figure out how to say old things in new ways.

me: well. mmm. i'll ponder that for a few years.

agent: you're young...you've got plenty of time.

I encourage everyone to write. I'm just not personally ready to take it on. But, I will throw this out there... if you have written something, and it is good, or you think its good, let me read it...and if I like it, I'll pass it along. ;)

Fair enough that you don't feel like it. It's what I suspected.

I wrote a short script on a hitman and my tutor mentioned entering the film I was going to make out out of it into a film festival here in England. One that he met Quentin Tarantino at after he'd done a presentation on blaxpoitation films.

Now I'm filming it he doesn't seem so enthusiastic :ohwell: But it's not my fault I have other uni commitments and borrow their shite equipment and struggled with the weather or getting the cast together. If I had proper film company backing...

I don't agree on the 'saying old things in new ways' idea. There are all sorts of new ideas still coming out and scripts aren't just about saying something. Having said that however I aim to try and recreate the same style as John Michael Hayes and Ernest Lehman on their films in Hitchcock's twilight years, those were some awesome films (well, film, for the latter

Raph is cool,

you'll have to send me a copy (if you can put it into digital format) when you're finished filming. I'd be interested to see the final product.

The Entertainment industry and stable don't belong anywhere near each other Shadow... But good luck. You have working experiance in the industry though, which is great. Maybe you should try starting out as a secretary for a company, and work your way up? Most people don't start in jobs like that doing what they want...

Ai, we should SO set up some freaky development house. Hahah... we could SO start a core team of people from the drome, once i get my C++ down, and make some kinda kick-ass videogame.

I'm so glad I dropped out of college. I got a job working at the Union Pacific Railroad (no real college req.) What I do is not the best position, but all roads from here lead to greater things. I'm a firm believer in getting on with a company at a low level, and rising to higher positions.

That's cool. Not sure if I'll be able to get the finished film to you since it'll be on the macs at uni (plus I'm really not happy with the overall filming conditions and results) but I'll get the script ready and emailed to you as soon as I can. If you PM me an email address I can send it to that'd be cool
