What the hell?...
http://gc.advancedmn.com/images/media/shadowthehedgehog_006.jpg
It looks pretty much official: Shadow IS getting his own game. The bad news is, it looks pretty uninspired, and even like it won't flow very well. Can't say as that's ever stopped Sonic Team from trying new things, though.
But yeah. You play as Shadow. With a gun (I just CAN'T believe they gave him a gun). And still have to move fastly down the linear levels. How well this will work out remains to be seen, but my hopes aren't terribly high. This is just a bit too... generic for me...
Oh well, at least they're giving him his own spin-off. No more of him tainting (if you feel that strongly) the main games.
It's a bit unfair to judge the game when I never played it and I must admit I AM a bit curious about the game, so I'll give it a chance.

Yeah, we've been talking about this in the Ninty thread. I still think it looks lame as hell.
Peanut
03-09-2005, 03:05 PM
It really does. Shadow is a lame ass character as it is, so to give him his own game...and then to put in gun play elements? No.
I agree. I can't say I support this kind of game. Shadow really is a lame character with no depth. I never liked him in Sonic Adventure 2. To give him his own game is just terrible.

I've never been into Sonic games anyway but a hedhehog with a realistic looking gun is just idiotic.

Now that you mention it, the graphics look pretty ****** for a home console game. Maybe it is for DS.

...You actually like this?
Well, at least they made someone happy.
And no, I don't think it will be for DS.
As I said in the Nintendo thread, this looks LAME. I don't care about Sonic or Shadow, but come on. If they want to make Generic-'Badass'-Shooting-Game No. 4526, that's fine, but at least use a character that fits.

I just saw the trailer and I think I WON'T give it a chance after all. JUST WHAT THE HELL are they doing to the Sonic Series?
I sure miss the good old days -Sigh-

>( The game's not going to suck. ANYTHING with Shadow in it is somewhat good. <.< The parts of SH with Shadow in it were good but the rest sucked.
So shush >_<
We're allowed to have an opinion, Hannah. I think Shadow is a terrible character. Deal with it.

Waitasec, they actually made a cartoon which involved Metal Sonic. SO I just go and assume that it was like the games, more advendture-orientated. Because there has been this other Sonic series which was supposedly funny, and it featured weird backgrounds and Tails was like a child.
As for the game... It doesn't look too good. Sure, there has to be work done on the graphics, but the concept itself. Also, I don't really like Shadow. He's just "Bah Buh! I'm evil and dark yet cuddly, love me and hate me!" I liked Metal Sonic way better... Where did that Shadow-creature come from in the first place? And where did Metal Sonic go?
Peanut
03-09-2005, 04:15 PM
He really is. Characters like Shadow are a dime a dozen, but hey, whatever people like. Honestly, Sonic's good name is completely ruined. I can't remember the last time I actually sat down and fully enjoyed a Sonic game.
Anarky
03-09-2005, 04:19 PM
The last sonic game I really enjoyed? That's an easy one: That Sonic game for Dreamcast. Damn, took me a long time to remember that name... Anyways, that game was the first one in 3D and it was fast... that was cool. But that para 2.5-d crap for the GBA never really got me (the remakes count as not being released for GBA).
Hannah

Shadow is the best character in Sonic. >_< He has a really interesting background story while most of the other characters dont even HAVE a background
Anarky
03-09-2005, 04:21 PM
A-ha, he does have a really interesting origin? Really? Care to share it with us?
I can't remember Shadow being anything but "there".

03-09-2005, 04:22 PM
Well, I like Shadow and I'm gonna give the game a chance. People always complained about Sonic Adventure 1 & 2's tresure hunting and Mecha walking, and this sucker dosen't look to have any of that. I dunno about the gun aspect, but as long as I get to run straight ahead and jump on stuff, then there is hope.
Wait til E3 and some actual game footage comes around before we judge the gameplay.

shadow was project shadow who was created by proffessor gerald robotnik (robotniks grandfather) on space colony ARK while trying to create the ulitmate life. the government decided the project was too dangerous after the prototype, the biolizard, was released. without knowing shadow existed, they sent GUN up into the space colony to shut it down. during the process, robotniks cousin, maria, who gerald and shadow cared for very much, was killed before shadows eyes. he was sent to earth in an escape pod and not discovered for another 50 years by robotnik who then worked with shadow and a bat named rouge to use the eclipse cannon to blow up the earth. while sonic and his friends were on ARK amy accidentally reminded shadow of marias last words, "Give them a chance to be happy", and shadow became good again and saved the world but "died" in the process. and im too lazy to explain sonic heroes so there you go
Anarky
03-09-2005, 04:29 PM
Oh, so he is the genetic experiment which was lost and then was surprisingly rediscovered when needed. That sounds rather... let's say... artificial to me.
At least they made a try to explain the "darkness" within Shadow... and his evilness. But ... please, best friends killed? How old is that? Couldn't they have come up with something better?
Hannah

Anarky
03-09-2005, 04:38 PM
Meh, works the same "Hey look, my evil friends, I just remembered knowledge I had forgotten. There is this project..."
Bleh, you know, I somehow just can't get myself to feel any sympathy for that character. He just looks misplaced, he seems to be just there for the sake of adding a character who is good for depressive coldplay-listening kids.
Hannah
03-09-2005, 04:41 PM
He hadnt forgotten, he was looking through his grandfathers journal and found a passworded file which he hacked into that he found was about shadow

If we could just get some real subbs of Sonic X, this would all make sense.
Anarky
03-09-2005, 04:45 PM
Ah well then, let me rephrase that then "Hey look, my evil friends, I just found knowledge that has been forgotten. There is this project... I have to find that very controversial figure with an undoubtedly dark past.."
Hannah

RAWR it wasnt like that he saw shadow was the key to destorying the world and tha all he wanted him for. shadow thought maria had wanted him to have revenge for her dath, and thats why he helped

I'll just say this.
Sonic Heroes pisse dme off because the story was sh*t, the characters personalities were messed up, and the 3 team gameplay was cheap. All I wanted was Sonic/Shadow or anyonw with feet running through levels at a stupid speed. Now, the graphics for this game don't look like anything special, but that may mean this sucker is blistering fast. The only thing that turns me off is the gun. Otherwise, there is hope.
Let's just wait and see okay?
PS. Shadow's story is not cheap. Watch the anime. It was well laid out IMO.
*edit*
And Anarky, you want Metal Sonic in an anime? Sonic X season 2 will have Metal Sonic in all his glory.

Nothing will ever make me stop loving Sonic. He was unquestionably the second biggest part of my childhood, directly under TMNT (which is why it's such a treat to see them together in the same block of cartoons.) I'll be a loyal fan 'till the day I die. I love Shadow, but I'm not sure I want a Shadow game. And as everyone else has said, the gun is a real turn off. It simply doesn't make sense. I don't think there's ever been a realistic gun in any Sonic game before, I don't see a need to start now. It takes away from the fun, "innocence" of their universe. And about Shadow's character; when you stop to think about it, he really is pretty generic. To sum him up nicely, all you have to say is "Vegeta the Hedgehog." But hey, I like Vegeta. And I like Shadow too. I really hope some day Sonic Team changes their mind and gives us a Sonic Adventure 3.

Well, the gun pisses me off because it cheapens the gameplay, and I'm sure that you have to stop before you can shoot it, which pisses me off because it will chunk up the smoothness of the gameplay which is what Sonic is all about. If the damn gun were gone, then I'd be all for this. Platformers are about running and jumping on stuff. Sonic is about running and jumping on stuff at vomit inducing speeds. Not trying to run, jump, and fall off a cliff cuz you were shooting at something. That's Ratchet and Clank. It's focused on the weapons rather than the jumping. Adding this to a Sonic game looks like they're copying something which pisses me off because Sonic is to me the last long standing gaming icon to hold his stature outside of Nintendo's.
Hopefully the gun won't totally ruin the gameplay. If the story is dark, and the gameplay isn't completely f*cked up, then I'll enjoy this because Sonic is very close to my heart and I just don't want to see crappy games come from the franchise.
Hannah
03-09-2005, 07:46 PM
It'd be nice if you could shoot while you were running. Like, a target on the screen and you could just press b to shoot at random stuff. =D

To what TMB said about stopping and shooting: Im just thinking , hoping , maybe, that you have to actually RUN -and- gun. I liked Shadow, and its been a long time since we've had a game that was just one hedgehog and you basically run. So they threw in a gun.
Never has a gun made things worse, or ruined anyones day.
Don't hold me to that....

Brodie, don't get me started on the disapointment that was Super Mario Sunshine and the water pack ;).
Unless this game looks REALLY cool at E3, I'm not gonna play it. I'll just take $20 that would have went to buying this game, and snatch up that Sonic Mega Collection.

I still don't see what's wrong with Mario Sunshine.
Hannah
03-13-2005, 10:22 AM
Sunshine was fun but it didnt fell like mario to me... i like the original 2d mmario games the best but im never get any new games like that so meh
What do you mean, it didn't feel like Mario? You ran around and collected coins and shines! That's as Mario as it gets. I thought Mario Sunshine was totally sweet. It's no Mario 64, but it's damn close.
ThirdMarioBro
03-13-2005, 11:22 AM
That's exactly what I thought. It wasn't the best game ever made, but it was a damn fine Mario experience and was pure fun. That's all I wanted.

I thought it was a good game but it had one of the worst cameras I've ever seen. And it just wasn't as good as you'd expect it from a Mario game.
ThirdMarioBro
03-13-2005, 04:51 PM
Well, some people don't like the camera because they had to control it. Mario 64's pissed me off because it had amind of it's own, but then again, that's a problem that has plagued platformers from day one. Mario's is about as good as it's gonna get. I liked having control of it myself.
You want a bad camera, try Sonic Adventure 2. That was one of the worst pieces of sh*t excuse for a camera ever made. Great game, sh*tty camera. Same goes for Sonic Heroes....maybe more so. Another thing they better fix in Shadow.
Brodie
03-13-2005, 06:23 PM
The camera only got hairy on SA2 a few times, specifically on the last grinding level, the one in space. Trying to find the chao on that level was damn near impossible.
Dane E5R
03-13-2005, 06:58 PM
I never really had any problems with SA2's camera. Super Mario Sunshine, though, is the only game I've ever had to try and force myself to have fun with. And I failed. It was one of the most unenjoyable video gaming experiences I'd ever had.

Oh, I liked mario sunshine, but it bothered me that they took some of his jumps from M64 away. The levels didn't feel as fun to explore as the ones in M64 either. Mario just felt clunky with the water pack.

That I'll agree with. Mario did feel clunky and a little bit unnatural with the water pack. That, and I missed all his extra moves. You could beat SM64 almost completely by using just the jump, but the fun part was to use the other moves just for the hell of it. I missed those (the long jump mostly). That, and punching goobas and watching them fly off left a somewhat satasyfing feeling.
