I know I'm not the only Tintin fan on these fourms, so I some of you might be intersested in this news. Read more about it in an article taken from theradier.net:

Good news for all Tintin fans. Variety reported that Kathleen Kennedy and Steven Spielberg will produce the internationally acclaimed comic strip Tintin as a live-action film for Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures.
Universal and DreamWorks are currently negotiating the feature rights with Nick Rodwell of Moulinsart, the company that holds the properties created by late cartoonist Georges Remi under the pseudonym Hergé.

Tintin is the story of an intrepid young reporter with a cowlicked coif who, with his dog Snowy, inevitably finds himself at the center of global adventures. Tintin's friends and allies include his mentor, Captain Haddock, police officers Thomson and Thompson and Professor Cuthbert Calculus.
The comic strip was first published in 1929 in Belgian newspaper Le Petit Vingtieme and was eventually translated into more than 50 languages. It has already been the subject of several animated adaptations for motion pictures and television.

So, am I the only one excited about this?

OMG!!! :o :o I AM A HUGE TINTIN FAN AND I HAD NO IDEA PEOPLE LIKED IT HERE, AMAZING!!! I have every single book, (Including Land of Soviets, and Congo, and Lake of Sharks) plus every vcd which I was fanatic enough to pay $40 worth of international shipping, lol. But I can't seem to access the website, is it going to be a stupid CGI film or are they actually going to try and draw it?!? I know with Spielberg it will most likely be a success, but you think they will be able to make a good enough storyline without the greatest Herge around....? :( :(

Okay, I've found another article on Yahoo. Here it is:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) --- Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures are in negotiations to acquire the motion picture rights to the international adventure comic book series "Tintin." Kathleen Kennedy and Steven Spielberg (news) will produce the project as a live-action motion picture with the intent to create a series of "Tintin" adventure films.

Spielberg has long wanted to bring the project to the big screen as a franchise. In 1983, he acquired the rights to the comic through his Universal-based Amblin Entertainment, which Kennedy was a part of at the time. The option lapsed, however, and Spielberg went on to form DreamWorks, while Kennedy is now partnered with Frank Marshall in the Universal-based Kennedy/Marshall Co. The desire to bring "Tintin" to the big screen never left Spielberg, who had always planned on re-acquiring the rights from holder Nick Rodwell and is now doing so with Kennedy.

"Tintin" will be a co-production of Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures. It has not been determined how the studios will split domestic and international territories. Amblin and Kennedy/Marshall will likely get production credits on the project as well.

The producers are currently circling a screenwriter to adapt the project, which follows an intrepid young reporter named Tintin, with a trademark coif, who travels the world with his dog, a terrier named Snowy (aka Milou). The pair inevitably find themselves at the center of breathless adventures. Tintin's friends and allies include his mentor, the heavy-drinking Capt. Haddock; the bumbling twins Thomson and Thompson, who work as police officers; and the scientific genius Professor Cuthbert Calculus.

Created by the late cartoonist Georges Remi under the pseudonym Herge, "Tintin" was first published in French in 1929 in the Belgian newspaper Le Petit Vingtime. Since then, 22 comic-book albums (known as bandes dessinees, or BDs, in France and Belgium) have sold more than 200 million copies worldwide and have been translated into more than 50 languages. Herge's publisher, Casterman, still sells more than 2 million Tintin books a year.

"Tintin" was the subject of several animated adaptations for film and television in France during the 1960s. In 1990, an animated series was created by the North American company Nelvana. A musical based on one of the comic books, "Prisoners of the Sun," premiered in September 2001 in Antwerp, on the Flemish side of Belgium's language divide.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It seems they plan for the film to be live action. I find that most interesting... and also somewhat ironic. If memory serves, after Herge saw Raiders of the Lost Ark (which Spielberg directed) he contacted Spielberg about doing a Tintin film.

Err... and Tokka, the only Tintin books I don't have are Tintin in the Land of the Soviets, Tintin in the Congo, and Lake of the Sharks. Are your copies in English? Cause I haven't seen 'em in English. Believe me, if I had, I would have bought them.

Anyway, I'll keep ya updated on this.

Oh, wait did I say Lake of Sharks? I meant I wanted that one... I got the other 2 by buying something related to Tintin I believe on ebay, and the seller contacted me about a month later about how he is selling out English factory sealed versions of Land of Soviets and Congo, which I have recently recieved, and yes they were really good even though there is no color, lol. I got them for a nice price, about $40 for both, and they came in perfect condition right out of the plastic so I was impressed. I could give you his email and if you have paypal and he gives you the ok that he still has them in stock, you can pay quickly that way, cuz he prefers it that way. Just email me at [email protected] and I can tell you his email and you can negotiate with him. He is a really nice guy and ships fast and will most likely be more than happy to know someone wants his books.

Hey, wait, didn't they already have like 2 Tintin live action films in the 50's or something? I'm not sure, but I suppose if Herge wanted another movie, he should deserve one, it would only be fair for all he has done, lol. I hope they can get some good actors though, that might be tough. Ah well.

You know, I believe the TV show is still playing on HBO. Although I'm not sure about that. It used to be on HBO anyway.

Okay, in interest of keeping this discussion alive... which book do think would make the best movie? I'd say maybe The Blue Lotus. Or they could start at the beginning and make Tintin in the Land of the Soviets.

I never knew Spielberg was a Tintin fan, or that he owned the rights to a film.

yeah neither did I, I know they made a live action Tintin movie in France but I hear it wasn't so good.
The blue lotus would make an awesome movie, the Calculus affair might too because of its mysteriousness it also has more characters. But I think they will probebly make an entirely new story all together for the movie, or at least one based off the comics, also for the Blue Lotus you would need the cigars of the pharoh as well

That's it, they will most likely pick one of the trilogy comic episodes that has enough info to make a movie, as for which one, that is a tough pick, I just love them all. With live action, the moon one would be pretty tough, but I like the idea of the Calculus affair, because it has more characters hence more funniness, but also a real good plot to build off of.

Calculus Affair is, in fact, my favorite book. :D

Well there are no trilogy books just 2 parters.
Yeah the Calculus affair is among my favorites, along with the land of black gold, Blue Lotus/ Cigars of the pharoh and the seven crystal balls/ Prisoners of the sun

Oh oops, did I say trilogy? I meant 2 part series....

I liked both the show and the comics, mostly the comics, but the show had excellent voicing, I kind of pictured them sounding the way they did.

I just think the whole series is so hilarious, a type of cmedy that will probly never be able to be accomplished in America. Between the Thompson's clumsiness and mis-use of words, Calculus's absent-mind, Haddock's hilarious way of cursing people out and his temper, and the loveable dog snowy who is a bit funny as well. The only show or comic series I think in which the main character is so plain, and the supporting characters hold up the show and comics with a heavy grip.

I can't tell you my favorite, I just really enjoyed the destination moon/exploers on the moon and blue lotus and a lot more! :)

they already have made a Tintin movie in France that was live action and preety bad.. but this one will hopefully be better. Well I think animation may have been better but people might think its too kiddy (which may very well be true)

I think it would be a great movie if animated, since the whole series is animated anyway. But I also think it will be good live-action only since Spielberg is producing it.

If it were anyone besides Spielberg, I'd be frightened. If anyone can pull a live action Tintin off, it's him. I mean, he practically already did it with Indiana Jones! Just a slight difference in the outfits.

All the same, I'm still leaning towards traditional animation.

11-27-2002, 08:28 PM
Yea, it just seems that Herge would want to see an animated movie instead because he already witnessed 2 live-action ones already, heh...

yes Spielberg is the best person possible, Indiana Jones wasn't too much like Tintin, Tintin is goofier and has realistic plots, and he doesn't seduce 5 women daily either :P
