There hasn't been a new topic in here for awhile so I decided to bring back the subject. Now you can clearly tell they are turtles, but what's with the letters?

Are they THE turtles?

Yeah E is electricity, but what is G?
Ugh. Okay, a few years ago I lost my trust in Laird's judgement. When he decided to bring the Turtles back, I was willing to trust him again. But if he ends up turning the Turtles into permanent super heroes without a VERY GOOD explaination, I'm gonna go back to not liking him.
I'm still hoping it's a in-comic storyline about marketing the Turtles like the media did with the Utroms.

Well, it is pretty obvious why they look different, they are like super heroes in the UK version which this is, and in the U.S they are Ninjas, Heroes and ninjas clearly look different if you hadn't known...

LOL! Good one!
I'm still keeping my fingers crossed. They've teased us with covers before. Mike falling, (making us think they were going the way of Image,) Karai reappearing, (acting like she was going to bring back the war with the Foot,) Splinter appearing in the crosshairs of a riflescope, (like he was going to be taken out.) They do it on purpose. As much as we hate teasers and cliffhangers, we love them just as much.
But if Laird takes away the ninja aspect of the Turtles, there are going to be lots of unhappy fans.

The latest one is Blast #62 (http://www.planetracers.com/blast/blast62.html), and the pic is right under the one of Doctor Dome (which BTW was a prop for the unused scene at the end of the first TMNT film)

Have I missed some info somewhere? I mean, I haven't seen anything that suggests that this will be something "permanent"...
And I think it looks like a F on the electro-turtle :P

Yeah, we all hope it's not permanent. And the letter is clearly E.

I can't help but wonder which is which in that pic. I'm kinda guessing though that Mike's the one with the electrical powers and Don's the one with a G on his belt (the cape and cowl also remind me of the Dark Turtle in the toon)
Nickokapo
11-24-2002, 05:34 PM
My guess is:
Leo: the turtle with the melting arms :P
don: the turtle with the mask and the 'G' in the belt
mike: the turtle with the electrical powers and the 'F' or 'E' in the belt
raph: the hulk-ish turtle
Or they could be the turtle's evil supertwins like slash said!Who knows! :P

I think the muscle one is Leonardo because of the shirt but then again it would be for mirage so color wouldn't matter because they all were red masks & brown pads
Nickokapo
11-24-2002, 05:52 PM
I thought about that too, specially because of the shirt's color...but since it's mirage that might not have anything to do...i just thought that kind of powers would fit raph more :P but he might be leo

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, including me. You don't see me jumping on your back now, do you?
And we were just JOKING! We're not gonna hunt down Laird. As a reader I know how annoying and upsetting teasers can be. But as a writer and would-be comic artist, I know how pleasurable it is to annoy and upset my readers strictly for shock value.

Another thing too: If you've read the letters section of Vol.4 #5, you'd know that Peter Laird doesn't tolerate people bitching and complaining about his book.
*opens her mouth to do a bit more bitching and complaining but thinks better of it* Well, he should learn that it comes with the territory. Honestly, a grown man whining about a few bad letters...
Karpo_007

BUt I also agree... I'm not a big fan of superhereos. Batman, Xmen, and DareDevil are about as far as I will go.. all the rest just annoy me. But I think they are also doing another gag for the covers. Surely Laird will not make them permanent superheroes, would he? :-?

I think he is talking about Peter Laird. And I agree, I can't believe he would change the TMNT so drasticly.
heretic888
11-25-2002, 01:23 PM
damn skippy.
I agree, Laird wouldn't change his concept of TMNT. But remember, he didn't create it alone. There are aspects of TMNT that left with Kevin Eastman, that we probably won't see again in the comics. I'm still seein some of Laird's behavior concerning his "takeover" all the TMNT as a bit childish, but that's my opinion.
heretic888
11-25-2002, 01:36 PM
if the tmnt were gonna go 'superpowered' i'd like to see something like the proposal for the fourth tmnt movie.... or some kinda ninja-related powers or esp.... and not goofy costumed 'justice shall prevail!!' nonsense.
Karpo_007
11-25-2002, 01:38 PM
Wel he didn't actually take over the TMNT rights, They lived far from each other, Eastman was giving his time to Heavy Metal, Of course there was some diffrences, Next mutation probably was the biggest one. Of course I have also heard that Laird didn't like Body count. So maybe the TMNT wont be overly Violent in the future.
heretic888
11-25-2002, 01:52 PM
well, the tmnt have NEVER been psycho-violent like they were in Body Count. they are violent and occasionally curse, but it was kinda extreme in body Count. Laird will prolly keep it like it was in the original comics.
Karpo_007
11-25-2002, 01:55 PM
Yeah. I have alwasy thinked that he wrote most of the original stories.
I know Laird didn't takeover the rights to TMNT forcefully. But I can't help but get this image of him sitting in Mirage Studios (or whatever it's called,) laughing manically, saying, "Now I can do things MY way! And no one can stop me! Bwahahahaha!"
*ahem* Yeah.
heretic888
11-25-2002, 01:58 PM
oh no!! its diabolical evil Pete!!!!!!!! :o
yeah, i think Laird wrote a lotta the general plotlines... but Eastman fleshed out the characters a lot... and it shows.
Karpo_007
11-25-2002, 02:02 PM
In some comic I read about the proces of making a TMNT comic. First Pete wrote the story, Then Kevin did thumbnails, then they both pencilled and inked half of it.
And personally, If Laird's way is like the original comics and less like Bodycount im ok with it. This will change if this Super hero thing will be permanent.
heretic888
11-25-2002, 02:04 PM
yeah, but i think Eastman was resposible for fleshing out a lotta the characters. read stories where kevin helps another writer out and this shows. the tmnt in the new comic just seem very..... bland. i hope pete improves this. i mean, the overall plot is really, really good... but the characters themselves are sorta being bland.
Karpo_007
11-25-2002, 02:06 PM
Of course it wont ever be as good as the first volume, but it is ok. It's still TMNT and has the same feeling. But still it's little diffrent.

Three reasons why I'm not worried about this:
1) There will a new cartoon, toys, games, etc. and it'd be extremely stupid to change the comic turtles now.
2) Peter loves these characters.
3) They're the Teenage Muntant Ninja Turtles.
And Karpo, you earlier on this thread you said that Pete designed the cover. Are you sure? I thought Jim designed all but the first one.

Oh ok you are probably right. As i said, I am buing the new vloume, but not reading it yet. I have MANY volume 1 and 2 comics to go before I can start really reading it. I only read Volume 4 #1 before i made this decision and I know Laird pencilled that one. So I tought he would do them all.
heretic888
11-26-2002, 09:10 AM
Well, in a way, the turtles already have what some people would consider as 'superpowers'.
In the last issue of Vol. 4, Michelangelo fought blinded QUITE skillfully. In issue 5 of volume 1, all four turtles demonstrated they could go into a meditative trance-like state without the need to breathe oxygen. 9mm bullets bounce off their shells without affect. In issue 4 of volume 1, Raphael demonstrated he has the skill and power to literally cave in a steel door with a single kick. In issue 42 (i believe) of volume 1, all four turtles demonstrated strong intuitive/psychic capacities, especially Donatello.... in this issue, it was also revealed that illusions do not work on the turtles.
Most of the turtles' 'powers' seem to be psychic in nature, thus far.
Granted, all of this does not go as far as making the turtles 'superheros' but its just an indication its not as far from the characters as you may believe.......
HorseTechie
11-26-2002, 01:22 PM
Heh.. I was wondering about this once on the level of the Xmen. They are humans who have unique powers that are otherwise super-human. So in a sense, it's a farce to call them mutants. Whereas, a true mutant is a genetic anomaly, like the TMNT.
Hence... superhumans can be mutant, but can mutants be superhuman? Naah...
I also think the TMNT are super just being who they are. They don't hafta take on even wierder powers and wear funky spandex tights too... :tsweatdr:
heretic888
11-26-2002, 02:45 PM
yes, i would think a turtle having human-level intelligence and anatomy is pretty damn 'super' in itself.
but, the turtles more esoteric 'ninja powers' provide all the superpowers they need (although granted ANY human studying ninpo could acquire them as well......)
Karpo_007
11-26-2002, 02:49 PM
Actually after that HT's comment, the "Turtles in tights" sounds like a inside joke... I mean the TMNT was originally created as a parody of Traditional Super Hero comics.

Now that I think about it... The weird costumes remind me of the Archies comics, when the Turtles were forced to wrestle on Stump Asteroid. They wore strange costumes for the wrestling match... Afterwards, all of them except Raphael got rid of the costumes. Maybe the Turtles are going to be doing something that will temporarily require strange costumes??
Jephael
11-26-2002, 11:44 PM
Right but judging from the pic, the turtles themselves are changed physically. One's got some kinda clay power, his brother next to him is bulked up and the one infront has electrical energy.
