Out of boredom, and because I've always been interested in names, I decided to look up the names on the TMNT characters to see what their meanings were. I got the following results:
Leonardo means Like A Lion
Raphael means God Has Healed
Donatello means Gift
Michelangelo means Who is like God. An angel.
April just means the obvious Opening, 4th Month
Casey means Brave
Irma means Complete one
Vernon means Youthful
Those were the only ones I could find but I thought it was kind of interesting. I think the meanings of the turtles names fit them really well.

The names Michael and Raphael were actually names of 2 of the 4 arch-angels (3rd one was named Gabriel, and I forget the 4th one). But Michael is said to be the most powerful of all of God's angels in Heaven. Which is why the name means Who is like God. Food for thought. (I wonder if that's why Michael Jordan was so good at basketball?)

That's intresting that you got the meanigs on the names. Doesn't Raphael's name sorta contradict the character seein' he gets ticked off a lot? I don't see how he's been healed by God seein' as his life is stressful.

Raphael:
Gender: Masculine Usage: English, German, French, Biblical
Pronounced: RAF-ie-el (English), RAY-fee-el (English), ra-fa-EL (French)
From the Hebrew name Repha'el which meant "God has healed". Raphael was one of the seven archangels in Hebrew tradition. In the Book of Tobit in the Old Testament it is told how he aided Tobias. This was also the name of a 16th-century Renaissance painter, Raffaello Sanzio, the designer of several of the frescoes in the Vatican Palace in Rome.

That is a cute monkey. ^_^
I find all this pretty fascinating. This reminds me of a thread about the colors of the masks of the TMNT and what each color means. Very insightful stuff.

Oh and Michel and Raphael are not only archangels they are also patron saints...
In Gargoyles one of the Avalon clan members is named Raphael.... to go with the theme of angels (Gabrielle, Angela, Raphael, Michel, ect).
Raphael the Archangel (AKA Angel of Love, Angel of Joy): He's the Patron Saint of apothecaries, blind people, bodily ills, doctors, druggists, archdiocese of Dubuque Iowa, eye disease, eye problems, guardian angels, happy meetings, insanity, love, lovers, mental illness, mentally ill people, nurses, pharmacists, physicians, archdiocese of Seattle Washington (yay!), shepherdesses, shepherds, sick people, sickness, travellers, young people
One of the three angels known by name, and one of the seven that stand before God's throne. Lead character in the deutero-canonical book of Tobit in which he travelled with (and guarded) Tobiah, and cured a man's blindness; hence his connection with travellers, young people, blindness, healing and healers. The force behind the healing power of the sheep pool mentioned in John 5:1-4.
Raphael means...God's remedy, for when he touched Tobit's eyes in order to cure him, he banished the darkness of his blindness. Thus, since he is to heal, he is rightly caused God's remedy.

Michael/Michel the Archangel:
Archangel. Leader of the army of God during the Lucifer uprising. Devotion is common to Muslims, Christians and Jews with writings about him in all three cultures. Considered the guardian angel of Israel.
The feast of the Apparition of Saint Michael commemorates the 6th century appearance of the archangel on Mount Gargano near Manfredonia in southern Italy. Michael requested a church built in his honor at the site. If you find medals or holy cards with 'relics' of Michael, they are probably rock chips from the cave, or pieces of cloth that have touched it.
He's the Patron Saint of: Against temptations, ambulance drivers, artists, bakers, battle, boatmen, Brussels Belgium, Caltanissett Sicily, coopers, Cornwall England, danger at sea, dying people, emergency medical technicians, EMTs, fencing, Germany, greengrocers, grocers, haberdashers, hatmakers, hatters, holy death, knights, mariners, milleners, Papua New Guinea, paramedics, paratroopers, diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee, Florida, police officers, Puebla Mexico, radiologists, radiotherapists, sailors, San Miguel de Allende Mexico, archdiocese of Seattle Washington (both him and Raphael), security forces, security guards, Sibenik Croatia, sick people, soldiers, Spanish police officers, diocese of Springfield, Massachusetts, storms at sea, swordsmiths, watermen

The names Michael and Raphael were actually names of 2 of the 4 arch-angels (3rd one was named Gabriel, and I forget the 4th one).
There were actually 7 arch-angels - Michael (mighty leader!), Gabriel, Raphael, Azrael, Azraphael, Dedrael and Shemkel.
And yes - "-el" ending means "God".
The name Hamato Yoshi (or Yoshi Hamato) means Quiet/Calm(Yoshi) Seaside(Hamato)...but Yoshi also means goodness, luck or free.
Also, in Japanese, Yoshi means go, or start

I've just done some research now and the 7 archangels names were, based on my research:
Uriel, the holy angel who is over the world and over Tartarus
Raphael, the holy angel is over the spirits of men,
Raguel, the holy angel who takes vengeance on the world of the luminaries
Michael, the holy angel who is set over the best part of mankind and over chaos,
Saraqael, the holy angel who is set over the spirits who sin in the spirit
Gabriel, the holy angel who is over Paradise and the serpents and the cherubim (Gabriel is also the angel who visited the virgin Mary and told he she would give birth to the Lord and Saviour fo the world, Jesus Christ),
Remiel, the holy angel whom God set over those who rise
It's said that at God's throne in Heaven there are 4 archangels on the 4 sides of the Lord, whose names are:
Michael, the merciful and longsuffering
Raphael, who is set over all diseases and all the wounds of the children of men
Gabriel, is set over all powers
Phanuel, is set over the repentance unto hope of those who inherit eternal life
I got this information from the Apocrypha book called, the Book of Enoch.
Pretty cool info.
I wonder what my name means... :)

Well... my name has many meanings... this is my RL name tho :P
The French/Swedish meaning is Pure/Virginal.... which I really don't like.... but in Italian my name (It's Caren BTW... rare form of Karen which is actually a shortened form of Catherine/Catheryn/Kathryn/Katherine) means Love or beloved.... :D
with that my name means Love Bitter Sea Glade.... Gah... :P
Someday Im changing my name legally to Dierna.
My fan fic characters always have special meanings to their names...Im forever looking up names for possable characters....like a possable offspring of Raphael and Ninjara I've made an image of.... Well he's got bat like wings so I was thinking of naming him after the scientific name for a flying fox which is Pteropus...from that I got the name Peter....So I decided to look up what the name Peter meant....I then found the name Pietro (which BTW.. means Rock).....and on the site I found the meaning it said there was a Renaissance Artist named Pietro Perugino....well..I'd never heard of him before so I looked him up.... and by PURE coincidence it turns out he was the master of Raphael Sanzio.... Im not sure if I'll ever use Pietro or not tho :P But it's still funny and ironic...
