View Full Version : The Unexplained in TMNT

there are so many things that are unexplained in the turtle universe of the old cartoon. Like for instance how is it the turtles can live in the sewer all the time and not be bothered by the smell, or how can they even not get sick by living the sewers ( or April for that matter, she should have a nasty case of something by now)

How come April is the only reporter that ever reports anything worth while in the city of Newyork. And how come Vernon seemed somewhat of an assistant and less hostile towards April in the first season and then is her full blown rival in the rest of season. ( My personel theory is that April and Vernon had secret crush on each other and covered it up with being hostile towrads one another)

Why where there so many inconsistenceies with Splinters abilties. He could in the space of an episode go from being weak and helpless to being strong and powerful and beat the crap out of any one. He was weak and forever needing saving most of the time and then when it suited him ( presumably) he was very independent and capable.

What the hell is wrong with Irma. I don't think I need to explain my self . ( Personally I think that she was a lesibian and thats why she could never find mister right). Heaven knows she tryed everything in and outside of her speicious and the oppisite sex is probably the only route she had not tried.

Are the turtles more human than turtle? the turtles can walk up right and talk and eat people food, they have teeth and finger and thums and toes and seem to enjoy more things that are human than turtle. They seem to be able to sweat, so maybe they are not even cold blooded. They don't seem to like getting wet particualy much and they rather eat pizza than a more turtle diet. Compared to the frog mutants down in Florida who seem to enjoy hanging out in the swamp and eating a fly or to, the turtles are very different from there turtle roots they originated from. Wonder why?

Where the heck do the turtles and Splinter get all the furniture and moderen conviences that they have in there home? Like the beds and the funiture and the TV's and ovens and cupboards and refridgerator, if they don't have money? What does Donatello the turtle wonder genius build all this stuff. And more importantly where do they get the electricity to power all this stuff, and the fresh water that they drink and bathe in and the cable. I don't think that they pay for it, so how are they getting all these services. And when the turtles do have money how the hell do they get it! they don't have jobs and I doubt that Splinter lets them steal, and i don't think they just find lying around. ( I have entertained the thought that Donatello prints the TMNT's own money, but I dounbt Splinter would let that slide eighther)

 some entertaining thoughts haha:lol:

i can't stand the old show but I'll watch it...it's great to fall asleep to.

one of the reasons I liek the new show ten time more cause it makes more sense.

I dont believe the guys are ectothermal, or at least completely. they expend too much energy to be cold blooded. I know that much. So I'd say they're maybe half way endothermal, warm blooded but susceptible to freezing temps.

Vernon and Irma shoulda got it on...I mean they're both dorks. hehe

The sewer is all the turtles have known as a home (as mutants anyway), so the smell probably doesn't bother them so much. Maybe there was something in the mutangen that boosted their immune system, so they don't get sick. As for April, I guess she's just really careful. Maybe the guys told her to take some extra vitamins or something. Perhaps she lugs around an economy sized can of Lysol in one of the pockets on her pants legs.

They're probably other reporters out there in NYC reporting worthwhile stories. It's just that April is kinda like that annoying little botoxed pixie Katie Couric. Yeah, there are other people that do network morning news shows, but Katie's usually the first one that comes to mind. I don't think Vernon had a crush on April - I think he was just jealous of her b/c he was a media whore and wanted all the attenion that she got. Personally, I always thought Vernon was gay. In fact, I heard that later he had originally pitched Queer Eye for the Straight Guy for Bravo, but was later replaced by Carson. Network execs just weren't digging the whole pink button shirt w/ suspenders and acid wash jeans look. I hear Vernon is still quite bitter about it. :D

Why where there so many inconsistenceies with Splinters abilties. He could in the space of an episode go from being weak and helpless to being strong and powerful and beat the crap out of any one. He was weak and forever needing saving most of the time and then when it suited him ( presumably) he was very independent and capable.

The weak thing was probably a front to fool his enemies. Heck, Shredder and co. bought it enough times. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

What the hell is wrong with Irma. I don't think I need to explain my self . ( Personally I think that she was a lesibian and thats why she could never find mister right). Heaven knows she tryed everything in and outside of her speicious and the oppisite sex is probably the only route she had not tried.

Hrm. I think Irma's just picky and has high standards. If she wasn't so much of a geek, I could see her palling around with Carrie and her posse from Sex in the City, griping about lack of good men in NYC and whatnot.

Are the turtles more human than turtle? the turtles can walk up right and talk and eat people food, they have teeth and finger and thums and toes and seem to enjoy more things that are human than turtle. Compared to the frog mutants down in Florida who seem to enjoy hanging out in the swamp and eating a fly or to, the turtles are very different from there turtle roots they originated from. Wonder why?

The turtles were the stars of the show. They had to be more human so the audience could relate to them and want to watch the show and see what zany adventure they'd go on this time. Frogs were only secondary characters, so they could be as frog-like as they wanted. Nothing to really lose with them - Kermit had already covered the talking frog market, so it's not like they were going to create a spin-off series with them or anything.

Where the heck do the turtles and Splinter get all the furniture and moderen conviences that they have in there home? Like the beds and the funiture and the TV's and ovens and cupboards and refridgerator, if they don't have money? What does Donatello the turtle wonder genius build all this stuff. They get their stuff from the dump. Sometimes April their other human friends will do a Sal Val run for them, but primarily it's just trash they spiffed up a bit. The bum cable and electricity off of April and some others in her apt building. Donnie probably rigged up some contraption that converts crappy sewer water into crystal clear drinking/baithing water. Or again, they steal from April. As for the money, I think you're right about Donnie printing their own, but I think Raph and Mikey are in on it as well:

Donnie: Hey guys, check out my new invention! It prints out money just like the kind they have on the surface! Now we can buy anything we want!

Raph: Wow Donatello, I'm really impressed! You finally made a worthwhile invention!

Mikey: I dunno dudes. Isn't printing your own money like wrong?

*Don and Raph exchange looks*

Raph: Well maybe, Michaelanglo, but just think - we could have anchovy and ice cream pizza for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Every day.

Mikey: Cowabunga dudes! Count me in!

*Leo and Splinter enter*

Leo: Hey fellows, where'd you find all that money?

Don: Um, there was a bank robbery that we thwarted. As a reward, the bank gave us this cash!

Splinter: Excellent work my sons!

That's my two cents on some of the old toon mysteries. Don't mind me - I think I had a bit too much caffeine this a.m. :P

All the stuff you said is just common sense, it's a cartoon and not every minor thing will be explained. It's also not important how they got their home furnished and appliances. What is important and should have been explained are both the Origins of Krang and the Technodrome. That would've been a cool flashback story, just like "Secret Origins" in our new show.

Well, we all know that's just a cartoon but some people actually find unexplained pleasure in finding goofs and logical inconsistencies in popculture stuff... like me, for instance :D

And yeah - I have always wondered how they manage to finance tons of pizza they consume + electronic goodies they own. One of my theories is that they actually offer "protection" to the owners of pizza restaurants, in exchange for everyday delivery of fresh commodity and for a humble amount of cash.

Sewers are divided in sections. Some of the sewers are for moving waste around. These sections tend to smell bad and are quite unsanitary.
Other parts of the sewers are for moving clean purified water around as well as running city cables around. These parts are pretty clean and don't have any odour.
I'm sure that the TMNT live in this section. They have access to clean water and electricity.

As for money, I'm going to assume that when Hamato Yoshi (Splinter) moved to America, he had little money. He probably mannaged to get a job but lived in the sewer to avoid rent costs so he can save his money for something grand (perhaps to buy a house or open his own dojo). He probably mannaged to save up several thousands of dollars... possibly enough to buy a house or buy property to open a dojo. His plans were foiled when he changed into a humanoid rat. Splinter and the TMNT probably carefuly ration out the money to survive on for years.

April is the "only" reporter because she's the only one the turtles watch. The Vernon thing is basic competition. A crush? Please. The guy wears pink. 'Nuff said. :P

Irma's not a lesbian. She has bad luck with getting a man simply because the common man doesn't find her attractive, and the men she does manage to go out with tend to put her off.

Quite frankly, I'm probably the only one on Earth who thinks she's cute, except for her voice.

Can we have one damn disscussion where the classic toon isn't compared to the new one and how freaken great the new one is. I mean seriously i don't care how much better the quality the new show is or how the storlines make better sence. :x

Quite frankly, I'm probably the only one on Earth who thinks she's cute, except for her voice

if she would lose the geeky glasses and frumpy clothes and maybe do something different with the hair, she could have been cute. i still think she was a Lesibian, I kind of wanted her to hook up with Vernon; now that would have made a super couple :P. Also where Irma and April room mates or did they just live in the same appartment building?

very informative and helpful, I didn't know that and it does explain why the living conditions that the turtles live in are so...er, unlittered with human feces :dead: . That was somthing that bugged me all the time while i was watching the show. Although I wonder how they manage to reroute the floods of natural water that come through their home.

And even if they do live in the cleaner part of the sewer they don't seem to mind to walk around in the filthier part on the sewer amd don't seem bothered by it, then they go and tract it around their living quators right after they where just swiming around in sewer water. I'm surprised Splinter doesn't flip out. Or April for that matter doesn't freak when they go into her home.

I have always wondered how they manage to finance tons of pizza they consume + electronic goodies they own. One of my theories is that they actually offer "protection" to the owners of pizza restaurants, in exchange for everyday delivery of fresh commodity and for a humble amount of cash.

I could so see Michaelangelo as a some sort of pizza mobster, heck I bet that is exactly what they do considereing all the pizza they eat on a daily basis. No way in hell can the turtles offard all that pizza no matter how much money they make/find/confiscate/or Yoshi?Splinter had saved up.

And some how I don't think yoshi had any money saved up, I think he litterly left Japan with the clothes on his back. Which makes me wonder was Yoshi/Splinter in the U.S illgally :o It might explain why didn't/couldn't get a job and he didn't just find some housing. Maybe to escape immagration he hid out in the sewers so he wouldn't get deported. You never know
that could have been his reasoning and it makes better sence than him being just so dead ass poor that he couldn't find an abandoned building to live in or something. Unless Yoshi/Splinter is one of the extreme buddist people who prefere poverity and humilty in harsh conditions than living it easily. Hmm food for thought.

Live in Tacoma, Washington and you too will get used to the sewer smell. It's called the Tacoma Aroma and is the smell of sewage that wafts down from Seattle. If you're new to the area u need a gas mask....but after a while you get used to it. :P

See, I think they have an adopted human sister who does not like the public life her brothers lead....kinda like the other Osborne sister. She spends all day at work, earning money to keep her family in food and air freshener other essentials...and at night, while they go out, she's asleep. That's why you never see her.

She is following the bushido training for samuri girls and women...take care of the house, defend your father's honor, and fight if you have to. :)

B) A TV show made in the late 80's early 90's which at the time needed no explanation
C) If you break down any other cartoon show from that period you will be asking similar questions

April and Vernon? Well that's something I've never thought of before! I don't think so. They're just rivals. There's no unresovled sexual tension or anything, IMHO, it's just business with those two. Just typical competition in the work place, one always wanting to better the other. I've never read into it any further than that.

And Irma being a lesbian? Nah. She's just too picky/annoying/frumpy/desperate/needy to get a man is all.

Yea...that's where they get all their money...plus Scooby comes from big money too....and then they all have those relatives popping up. All of Scooby's relatives (A Deputy, a Las Vegas Lounge singer, and an actress who also has the hots for Scooby) and there's Shaggy's relatives (rich aunts and uncles, his sister, and his dad who at one point was the Coolsville Police chief), and Velma's relatives (one of which was totally wanting to get into Fred's pants)..... See with Scooby Doo it's all relative...litterally... :P

In the Scooby Doo movie, at the beginning, they do a funny scene where u see the Mystery Machine (their van) with smoke billowing out of the windows while Scoob and Shag are saying stuff like "Oh yeah that's the stuff". It's supposed to emulate Scooby and Shaggy tokin up some marijuana in the back of the van, but of course then they show you Scoob and Shag inside the van grilling hot dogs on a grill, thus the smoke. I always loved that scene though. :P

I mean if you see the episode when she is turned into a mutant cat she became quite the acrobate. Actually this was commented on in X-Entertainments review of the first episode as well. He theorised that April is made up entirely of cartilage :P .

One thing I always wondered though was when did Shredder replace his foot soldiers with robots and why. He became the ultimate leader of the foot clan after he ousted Yoshi/Splinter and he had complete control over the ninjas, and human beings would have been more loyal and helpful than midless robats. So why did he eventually replace them with robots. When Krang sent him to earth again in season two he could have had command of his foot soldiers because they would thorically would have been loyal to him not Krang. But the soldier bots where Krangs creation. hmmm

07-10-2005, 07:35 PM
They can't be cyborgs, because I believe a cyborg is a human being or another sentient who has the misfortune (or strange desire) to combine their bodies with machinery. Like Cyborg from Teen Titans, or any other part-human, part robot.

Robots, on the other hand, are just pure machines and computer, with no human parts at all.

oh i don't know, I was theorising on what exactly happened to the human foot clan and when the switch was made from human to robot and why. So I thought, hey maybe they are not robots at all maybe Shredder and Krang just made them into cyborgs to make them more powerful or something. Just a thought.

I always wondered how the turtles ever found clothes to fit them. I mean given there bodies, they must be horriably hard to fit. I mean they are short with short legs and given the size of there shells most have to find a pants with a really wide waist and stretchy shirts. I wonder what size waist they take :ohwell: ?

aww, come on its a fair question. As long as we keep it clean and don't go over board. But seriously the turtles must be really hard to fit. How do they find clothes that fit them propperly. Maybe that is why they prefere to walk around all natural instead of wearing clothes unless they have too.

Still, to go through a narrow storm drain she must have been really thin.

She probably couldn't pull that stunt off after months of hanging out with the pizza loving turtles.

She was saying :this is great! I must be really onto something big if there trying to kill me. :o

My reaction even as a wee little lass was: ummmm, your getting chased by big burly men with sporting equipment and chains and want to do you bodily harm, and your psyched that this means that your onto something big!

I swear that girl really didn't have her priorities straight **shakes head**
