Hey guys, if you are anime fans tell us what your favorite anime shows are and possibly why.

I'm sort of just getting into anime and want to know what some good series are... 8) Thanks guys!

hmm, I like anime, but I wouldn't consider myself an expert... the ones I'll suggest aren't the series on TV (that I know of) but are defenitely worth checking out

Bubblegum Crisis
Cowboy Bebop
Those Who Hunt Elves
Legend of Black Heaven
Angelic Layer

All of those are series, and they range from comedies to dramas. For the movies instead of series I'd suggest

Vampire Hunter D
Metropolis
Ghost in the Shell
Escaflowne
and of course, the classic Akira.

As for why I like these shows, they all have a good solid plotline, (with the exception of Akira which is just strange) and are fantastic shows. The artwork in most of them is excellent... ah its hard to explain. I like all of them for different reasons...
Hope that helps!

I don't watch to much anime but movies I've enjoyed are:

Metropolis
Akira
Princess Mononoke
Roujin Z

There are probably some other that I've forgotten, but that's good enough. I also like the Evangelion (spelled right?) and Excel Saga stuff I've watched on DVD.

I've really been meaning to get the Akira manga for a long time now. I hear Katsuhiro Otomo's up there with Will Eisner in storytelling capability and talent.

I saw a bunch of anime movies with a friend who's interested of it., during the summer:

Akira: Good.
Ghost in the Shell: Really good!
Final Fantasy Unlimited: Somewhat strange (since I'm no fan of the games), but not bad.
Street Fighter: Above average from what I was expecting.
Fatal Fury: Avoid!

I have seen quite a few Anime series and Movies. All time Best Anime is Akira of course. You need to watch it many times before you really know whats going on. Best series, Probably Neo Genesis Evangelion. Same thing, you need to watch it many times.

My fave animes and why...well there are too many to list :P but i'll list my most favorite ones.

Dragonball/Z/GT: Well it's a classic :P i grew up with it!
I saw the series, i bought like all 7 trading card albums and completed most of em, i bought lots of actions figures, i even had a book with info and pics of dbz in it and i think when i filled it i started another one...the memories  i still have it! :D
I loved the damn thing...i'm not as much of a fan anymore, but it still has a place in my heart.

Slam Dunk: I like this one a lot, saw the first half of the series in tv and when i got internet i got the 4 movies which i treasure :D i also got the first 15 eps...
I liked this anime so much i started playing basketball alone because of it :P but the basket broke...2 times... :embarass:

Sailor Moon: another classic ;) and now everytime i remember it i feel nostalgic...i saw the whole 200 ep series in tv, i had the magazines, the action figures, the trading card album...i was as much of a fan of this as DB/Z/GT, if not more.
Then i got internet and got the 3 movies...they were fine, i liked the R movie the most.

Saint Seiya: yet another classic, specially in latinamerica :P i wasnt so much of a fan of this but it was another one of the series i grew up with when they started airing it in the 90s...i've even gone to see the movie at the cinema.

Digimon, Digimon 02, Digimon Tamers, Digimon Frontier: I'm so mad about this anime :teek: i got the 6 jap movies subbed and more than 160 eps counting all the 4 series, tho i liked the first Digimon series the most, the other ones are good too...except for digimon 02, it has nice character designs but the story gets too weird at the end.

I also liked saber marionette j, the j again ova, the R ova and the j to x series and i guess i could add it to my favorites by now.
I'm sure im missing some series im a fan of, but basically those are my most favorite anime series.
As for movies...

Transformers: The Movie ( Yeah yeah the series might've been a toon but this one was animated in japan and it kicks ass  so does the series, and that one is american... )

Digimon japanese movie 2, The Children's Wargame: This is one of my favorite digimon movies if not THE favorite...i like the animation and the plot....specially the animation, it kind of looks like cell shading but i doubt it is. (Oh and if anyone's wondering, there were 7 digimon movies in japan so far, 2 Digimon movies, 2 Digimon 02 movies, 2 Digimon Tamers movies and 1 Digimon Frontier movie..."Digimon the movie" is just a butchered up release of the first 3 movies made into one and released in the US.)

Digimon japanese movie 6, The Runaway Digimon Express: I like all 6 digimon movies, but this and wargame are my faves ;) why this one?Well...um...it's got a train and it's got digimon, that's enough for me :P also the animation is very good as usual in the digimon movies, and we get to see ruki try to break takato's head in half with a HUGE monkey wrench  :dead:

Akira & GITS: need i say why? ;) two classics with great animation and plot, period.

Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' On Heaven's Door: I'm not such a big fan of CB but this movie was great, it had great animation too, and there were a lot of parts i liked like the fight in the tower or the train part...and vincent...that guy's just awesome!Im a huge fan of him, even if he was a terrorist nutcase :D (If you're wondering who vincent is, it's that guy in my avatar)
Plus the movie's kinda long, so it's a great way of killing 2 hours :P and dont even get me started in the soundtrack.

The 4 Slam Dunk movies: I liked those 4 movies, specially because of the animation, it was better than the normal series' animation, as it's usually the case with anime OVAs/Movies.

Yu Yu hakusho movie 2: I loved it :D i like YYH a lot but i only saw some portuguese eps in a brazil channel years ago and had no idea WTF was going on, so when i got internet, i got some yyh stuff, eps 1-9 and the 2 movies to be exact.
It's kinda long too but it's a good movie so it's ok :P
I liked the first YYH movie too but it was too short (26 minutes) and the 2nd one was way better imo :sweatdro:

Again im probably forgetting a bunch of movies i like but basically those are it.

OH GAWD!!!

where to START!?!?

OTAKU WATASHIWA DESU NE
GENKI GENKI
GYUTTE GYUTTE GTUTTE DAKISHIMETA NARA

((TRANS: (native speakers don't beat me please.) I'm an ANIME FAN, aren't i? goodness! goodness! Squeeze squeeze squeeze me Really TIGHT!))

:anime: :anime: :anime: :anime: :anime: :anime: :anime: :anime: :anime: :anime: :anime: :anime: :anime:

so before you even begin.... ANIME is NOT a genre. It's like saying "Cartoons." So when the first three series you watch don't do it for you, DON"T SAY "I HATE ANIME." You've just not seen enough different types. :P

Right so: first off. I'm NOT a MECH. Anime type girl.
:-? kya, what do you mean?

i mean that given the choice between Sci Fi and Fantasy, I will generally choose FANTASY every time. (Sci Fi's cool, but "giant robot trashes city" only does it for me 2 out of 11 viewings.)

so... anything i recommend is either NOT a GIANT ROBOT (a la VOLTRON) or it's SO FRICKIN GOOD that it doesn't matter to me that it's VOLTRON.
right?
Right.

REALLY FRICKIN" GOOD:::

1. AKIRA. MOVIE. watch it with some one who's seen it five times. or read the Manga :-? ... Basically It's animated INCREDIBLEY. the story has so many LAYERS it makes your head spin. It's set in the future after WWIII. The soundtrack kicks ass. THERE ARE KICK_ASS MOTORCYCLES AND PSYCHIC DRUGGIES. You can't loose.
( :-? OKAY: manga = comic book... FYI MOST ANIME WAS MANGA FIRST. So if you find a series that seems to skip chunks of the story from time to time, don't worry... it's just a "print to tv" transition problem)

2. PERFECT BLUE MOVIE. Don't be shy... it's BLOODY!! If you like HITCHCOCK and murder and movies that mess with your head, twilight zone and the inability to tell where reality begins and the fvcked up hallucinations start... this is your movie. Plot: Teen Pop idol tries to break away from her "wholesome untouched pink sexy" image AND launch a career as an ACTRESS... her fans are displeased and she Becomes the object of a stalker's obsession. The thing is... the stalker is killing people who had a part in the pop idol's transition... publicists, script writers... AND the stalker INSISTS THAT SHE"S ASKING THE STALKER TO DO THESE THINGS.... Pop idol goes coo-coo. lots of blood. twist ending. watch it.

3. HELLSING. series. it's not been completely released in the US, so find someone who does FAN SUBS :-? if you JUST CAN"T WAIT TO SEE THE WHOLE THING... SO DO YOU LIKE VAMPIRES? DID YOU LIKE BLADE? Does the SLAYER make you drool? ... What if the slayer or the hunter or WHATEVER the vampire killer is called WASN"T HUMAN. What if he/she was just another Vampire... a FULL BLOODED vampire, who killed completely without regret or petty thiings like morals... OH MY GAWD.... the protagonist in this series is so cool, i wanna be just like him when i'm undead... THERE"S A DOG IN THE INTRO WITH 8 EYES!!! HOW DO YOU BEAT THAT?!?!? you don't. the themesong makes me dance.

( :-? = they translate/subtitle the japanese version without the official approval of the studio or the original author... not terriblly legal, but only REALLY illegal when the english versions are ACTUALLY available for sale in the US....)

4. This post is getting ridiculuously long... so just take my word for it these are ALL well animated... and INCREDIBLE :anime:
EXCEL SAGA (series) HYSTERICAL. the first two eps are silly to the point of pain... stick with it, it's worth it.

TENSHI NI NAROUMON (series 26 eps total)... SO CUTE AND GENKI... the main character'll give you cavities at first... but the series as a whole doesn't focus on her so it's all good.

GHOST IN THE SHELL (movie) INTROSPECTIVE AND DEEP. but full of shooting and a really cool tank.

PHOTON (series of 6 eps) HYSTERICAL. just watch it PAPA-CHUMP!!

VAMPIRE HUNTER D (a movie and the sequel) dramatic!! and SPOOKY!! I liked the sequel better... but then the budget was larger on the sequel...

RANMA 1/2 (series that will never end ... there are movies ... 2 of them) HYSTERICAL MARTIAL ARTS ROMANTIC COMEDY the main character has more fiances than he could ever choose between, b/c his dad was a free-loading martial arts instructor who kept promising his son's hand in marriage as a way to pay off various debts... AND it doesn't help matters that RANMA (the main char) has a curse on him.... cold water turns hiim into a girl and hot water changes him back.... so not all his romantic troubles are with girls... MIND YOU it's a PG-13 type show... so the naughtiest you'll see is some boob ever now and again... it's mostly ranma as a boy or a girl kickin' ass martial arts style and then getting his victorious ass handed to him on a platter by some mallet-weilding fiances ... a good time for the whole family.

Dragonball: One of my favorite cartoon show of all time second only to Ninja Turtles. Such a great show, the anime is even better then the manga in this case too. If you like fight and really goofy Toriyama style humor then watch this!!!!

Dragonball Z: well... its an acquired taste. A really good cartoon anyway, the series following up dragonball. The manga is better then the anime here, so I suggest getting the books. But still besides some of the outragously large explosions, a very good series.

G Gundam: Although I admit I haven't seen most of this anime, the parts that I have seen are awesome!!! The fighting and the story are both very good. It is also very weird and very diffrent from the rest of the Gundam series. But I still like it :P

Anime!! I love anime! Lessee here...

Fave TV shows:

DBZ/Dragonball - Lots of action, and loveable characters. DBZ doesn't have too much plot, though... :goofygri:

Fushigi Yugi - Very cool fantasy type anime. Really funny, too.

Fruits Basket - Romantic comedy. Don't usually like these, but this one has a certain charm to it. Also very funny.

Sailor Moon - Yes, I'll admit it. I like this show. It was my first anime show, and it helped me branch off to other genres.

Cowboy Bebop - Awesome. Just plain awesome. Action, comedy, drama, spaceships, and gun fights. This show has everything.

Outlaw Star - Nice romp through space. Cool sci/fi anime... me like.

Fave Movies:

Akira - You gotta experience this. Great animation, with a very complex plot.

Princess Mononoke - One of Miyazaki's films. Definitely one of my favorite anime movies of all time.

Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door - If you love Cowboy Bebop, you'll love the movie.

Blood: The Last Vampire - I like this. Freaky and very scary. I actually jumped a couple of times while watching.

Hah... well, I'm not a huge anime fan. Not so much that I wanna study the art style so I can superdeform everything, memorize the language, and make cute litttle sweat drop smilies in all my posts like most rabid anime fans do. :P *ducks baps* But I do like watching a few goodies from time to time. Really, I do!

I usually like more of the stuff aimed at an older audience, like the movies hosted by Manga. Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Ninja Scroll are some of those favs.

For the kiddy stuff, it's Medabots, Digimon, and Techi no Muyo. I saw a couple eps of Escaflowne.. but not enough to know anything of it. Looks good though. Dunno if the original Transformers is considered anime, but I like that show too. (Don't like VOltron though.. too much like Saban's stuff! :dead: )

*lol* Bloody.. not really. I think the body-snatcher one with a monstaer that eats people's livers (forgot the name of it) had more gore. But Ninja Scroll is more painful... to say the least. Not the thing to watch if you're suffering a migraine, as I like to say.

Hooya... I forgot about those titles! :teek: I love both of those! I have the Bastard DVD set... This OVA is so cool. Lots of dark humor, and some pretty sweet action sequences. And GTO... Man, I gotta pick up some of those DVDs. The main character of this show is hilarious! But Kya's right about the two being for mature audiences. Heh, violence and innuendo. :embarass:
