nice, but it would be hard for me to not be able to look through it. Still, they usually go for more on Ebay

Well I already have every other print of this issue besides graphic novel adaptions, the deluxe version of the mid 90's, and the new PBBX Con exclusive so not flipping through it would be fine with me but I'm gonna crack open the CGC thing anyway. I've decided to give it to my boss's boss (the owner) to break it open carefully and send it back to CGC to hopefully get a better grade. I work at a comic store and the owner already does a lot of CGCing so this wouldn't be anything new to him.

Thanks for the compliments, I was having buyers remorse but now I don't feel so bad.

Wow!

Now THERE'S something to put on your wall.

Or in your vault.

BigApple3AM
06-07-2005, 08:34 PM
Haha, if I had a vault it'd be full of little kittens. Yeah I know there's no air in vaults

Kidding, but seriously I think I'm going to get like a stand for it so I can put it on my shelf with its cover facing the world, then I'll put the TMNT statues I have around it, or when I have all 4 (I only have Leo and Mike right now) I'll connect them all and have the comic next to it. Who knows what I'll do besides reselling it. I don't think I'll be able to part with this thing for a loooong time. I'll sell it on my deathbed and then get up and jump out the window or something. Sure it'd only be a one story window but it could still hurt.

Wow, very pricy, but it's an awesome find, Ectocooler. :) First prints are rare, and to have it preserved with the CGC case should help it last a long time.

:o I am so envious of you, Ectocooler.

Damn, that's a nice find!

I have TMNT #1 as well... but it's a 3rd printing........

I got one of these a number of years ago for just under 400. I'd say it was worth it because afterwards I had to get a job... so, y'know, I learned some responsibility. My God, has it ever increased in price since then! Congratulations, Ectocooler. Seriously, we should start a club.

Yeah turns out mine was unfarily graded too (CGC always messed up).

Yeah the First Print TMNT #1 Club! Only requirement is you have to own a book that's now worth over 2 thousand bucks lol.

My dad had the option to buy it for damn cheap back when it first came out. Some guy told him about it and said it would be the next big thing. My dad turned it down and bought some Marvel graphic novel instead.

Sorry about the randomness. Cool find, btw.

No way bro it's stories like these that are truly interesting. Any guy with $500 (me) can shell it out on eBay, but the fact that your dad was into comics and heard about TMNT back before it truly was the next big thing is awesome. Your dad still a comics fan? Do you know who the guy was, a comic store owner/dealer? Do you know how much it was priced at? When was this (mid 80's I'm guessing 84?)

Anyway, I think the fact that the 1st print is so much is only a good thing for TMNT. It shows how in demand the property is to collectors (kids aren't buying this issue I guarantee (said like Leatherhead in the old toon). If anyone truly wanted the first issue it's been reprinted numerous times that they can get it by now, but the first print worth so much means our beloved TMNT is special.

Yeah, mon. Insane... and might regret it : «Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 CGC 9.2 White Pages»

White pages...

First print of vol.1 n°1 to 4, Raph & Fugitoid NEVER had «white pages»; they were printed on newspaper. On the other hand, counterfeit have white pages...

Congrats, Ecto, you obtained the Holy Graal of TMNT fandom!!

This was sometime in the 80's (the year escapes me) in NY. The comic shop, however, has been out of business for a long time and was replaced with a locksmith about 12-14 years ago.

And he reads Marvel from time to time, but not that much anymore (I bought him Origin, which was the first thing he's read in about a year). I know that a room in his apartment (which I'm temporarily staying in at the moment) is filled to the brim with old comic books in many boxes in pretty much every closet that I've never really looked at. So, yeah, I guess it's time to go through them and find some cool ****.

Sorry from straying from the topic.

So here's another first print graded at the same mine was, and it went for over $150 more than mine, so I guess these things are appreciating in value.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=017&item=270006279410&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

I showed a comic store owner and he said that yeah it was undergraded and that the reason mine was taken down was because the "yellowed pages" but like someone already said in this thread, none of the originals were print on white pages.

Sorry to ressurect an old thread, and I'm not trying to brag, I just like to follow the first issue prices. Another one at 8.5 went for $1500.

I think they sell for more having been graded--- but it costs a lot of money to have them graded, too, so I dunno.

BigApple3AM
07-17-2006, 12:30 PM
Yeah, but this one and mine were both graded by cgc at the same grade, and this one sold for more, so :D

I cracked open the cgc thing though, I hate cgc I just wanted the comic and I wanted to make sure it wasn't fake (and cgc would put fake all over it if it were fake) so it was just a more reliable way of buying a high ticket item.

CGC isn't that expensive though, that's why people do it. It's like $45 and can increase your comic's value by MUCH more.

Spitfire
07-17-2006, 06:32 PM
45 bucks to have a comic appraised is pretty expensive to me. Espcially if my comic doesn't end up being worth more then that. Then what? Then I piad 45 bucks to have that done to my comic and it's only worth 10...

BigApple3AM
07-17-2006, 07:56 PM
It depends, CGC isn't only for sellers. People get their personal favorite comics graded because they love them and want to preserve them. I'm anti cgc for what it does to the hobby (marks up comics at an unreasonable price). But I do see why some would value it.

And for sellers, it's their responsibility to realize the comics audience, and whether it'll sell or not. Depending on the grade it receives, like a 9.8 will ALWAYS sell, but a low grade will definitely limit the potential buyers.

So it's a gamble like basically anything else in life.
