Just started reading Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. I figured I'd give this a try since it's such a popular series. Since it's set up here I keep on seeing all the news reports on it. Gee thanks Stephanie Meyer for making a blink and you'll miss it town into a vampire lovers tourist trap town. :P

So far it's interesting. Mostly cuz of the setting being in an area Im somewhat familiar with.

Bought a plethora of comics on Saturday, so have been reading TMNT, Gizmo, Melting Pot, Rogue, Shi, Kabuki, Venom, and Blue Monday for the past few days...and still have more to go!

I'm re-reading Koji Suzuki's Loop, book three of Ring (yes, the same Ring that spawned the horror series of Ringu and The Ring). That book is a serious head trip.

It's revealed that the first two books actually took place in a computer simulation... but then the Ring virus escapes from the computer world and mutates into a cancer, which plagues all of earth's species, including plants. Then, in the ultimate wtf moment, the protagonist learns that he is a clone of the deuteragonist from the first book... essentially meaning that he is a clone of a man that never existed in the first place!

I finished a Forgotten Realms trilogy called "The Year of Rogue Dragons" by Richard Lee Byers recently (interesting menagerie of fantasy creatures; Taegan kicks ass). It was three separate books titled, "The Rage," "The Rite," and "The Ruin." Pretty decent story if you're into that genre.

Now I'm re-reading "Mad Merlin" by J. Robert King. A few years ago, I started this and got to chapter 48, then misplaced the damn thing during a Spring cleaning and found it again in October. It's quite surreal and will make you see Merlin in a very different light.

My friend literally dragged me into the bookstore for the purpose of making me buy Twilight. It was a pretty easy read definitely and the subject matter is definitely geared toward teens but I did get completely hooked and read all 4 books in about a month. I am curious if other people feel this way but my interest in the story dwindled during the events of the third book. I haven't seen the movie yet but I might try to in the next few weekends. I don't want to fight massive groups of teenage girls

Right now I am reading The Lovely Bones which has been working my emotions pretty good. I may be too sensitive but its been a tearjerker

I've read Twilight and New Moon, and plan to read the others, as well as see the movie eventually. While geared towards teenage girls they're still pretty good, if you like vampire books. But when it comes to teen vampire books, IMO nothing can compare to The Vampire Diaries by LJ Smith. I loved those as a teen.

Ever read the Anita Blake series by Laurell K Hamilton? They mostly feature vamps but they have a great take on werewolves. It's probably my fave version of both.

You DO realize that different cultures have different definitions on Vampires right??? There's various different species of them. Just because one book has what's deemed as the most well known definition and another one doesn't that doesn't mean it's wrong.

I mean take a look at the different ones:
Transylvanian - The ones everyone knows
Brazillian - Furry feet!!
Native American - Basically snort blood thru their noses....
Malaysia and Philippine - Only suck blood of children and pregnant women.
Aztec: Noblewomen who died in childbirth.
Japan: Kappa are vampires as are Kitsune
Australia: Basically the same powers as the Wraith in Stargate Atlantis. They suck blood with their hands.
Some transform into bats while others transform into wolves or other creatures.

Ugh. I hate Twilight. It is a horrendously written collection of embarrassing fantasies of a fat 30 year old outcast. There is not one well-developed character, creative plot point, or anything to draw in interest in the entire book- everything remotely interesting about vampires has been removed. "Biting" is a lackluster metaphor for sex and the whole book is conservative propaganda. The main character barely has a personality- she is only there for the lonely "tween" readers to project their personalities into and pretend like anyone would ever love them.

Anyway, I just finished The God Delusion and I'm currently reading Siddhartha. I think God is Not Great is next on my list.

Shadow of the Warmaster by Jo Clayton.

Never read anything by this female s/f author before, so I figured I'd start with one of the very few standalone books that she wrote.

Gotta say so far that I'm about 150 pages in and still not really drawn into it. She is an excellent writer and on a technical level, I'm impressed, but it's lacking something I can't quite put my finger on. I'll push through, but if I don't start loving it soon enough I don't think Ms. Clayton will be take up any more space on my shelf.

I'll save that space for Andre Norton, a female s/f writer that never dissapointed. I think my next book will be another one of hers.

So tell me then, from which ancient culture did the authoriffic genius aka. Stephenie Meyers get the sparkly vampire biting-is-just-sex stuff?

I've read the book because so many people were saying it was good. I figured it might be worth something and besides "Twilight" is an interesting sounding title. But that book is fanfiction in printed form. It's atrocious. It obviously caters at the "I'm an ugly twat, but my mom's said that I'm beautiful"-crowd who doesn't understand that they just might be too ugly for reproduction. They'll swoon over Edward who is "The only man who could ever love me the way I am!" since "Oh, my God, I'm so much like Bella!" whereas Bella was just intended to be that way.

If you want to write books for the sole purpose of making money off teens and other social rejects who don't know better, then Twilight's the way to go.

Ok, let me put this in terms you and Evenstar can understand.

If someone released a TMNT story where they aren't turtles, aren't ninjas and are 35 years old. Is it the same thing?

Thing is, we're arguing with the target audience Hannah and Anarky mentioned so theres no way it'll get through.

I read through about 300+ Marvel comics recently. I thought most of it was complete trash, the only things I enjoyed were the Civil War and Planet Hulk, and I had read most of Civil War before. Planet Hulk was f*cking fantastic, though.

I'm near the beginning of World War Hulk now, and it's decent, but not as good.

I won me a, guess what you would call a box-set, of Doctor Who books offa ebay the other day there. Ten books, all featuring Martha. For the princely sum of twenty quid, which is nice! Am reading one called 'Wooden Heart' right now, which is very good.

Also, coming soon in my reading schedule, is that other nine Doctor Who books in said box-set. And I picked up a few at a local charity shop, including The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold; The Voodoo Handbag and Website Story by Robert Rankin (recommended to me by my friend Scott, who says Rankin is like Douglas Adams on acid - loves me some DA, me does!); A Sandman anthology, edited by Neil Gaiman and written by various writers...

So I got me a few to read, which is always nice!

Pretty much finished Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth, which was some pretty messed up stuff. I liked the psychological horror aspects of the story, though, and wish there were more graphic novels like it.

Ok, just finished the book...quickest I've ever read one...and it's not a very critical "critical analysis." It's seems more an attack on the consumer culture that the TMNT became with it's thousands of products and little to do with the actual content. Heck the other books I read the simply mentioned the Turtles among other "evil" shows of the 80s and 90s, by the same author, were far more critical of the TMNT saying the 4 of them with their matching attire was reminiscent of a gang and Splinter was the gang leader. This basically just glazes over it and loathes it because it's the big "it" children's franchise. If I were a parent reading this as a analysis before deciding if my kid should have the latest TMNT toy or see the latest movie or cartoon show, I think I'd have little problem.

Oh, side note it asked what kind of an adult a person who watched this would become...I guess that'd be us right? we turned out ok, right?

Re-reading Grant Morrison's run on Batman. Good god, when you read the whole thing together up through the end of "Batman: R.I.P." it's frickin' great. Every time I go through it there's so many things I missed that I catch on the re-read. I'm inclined to think most people who "didn't get it" didn't actually read it. I was persuaded to re-read it after reading Morrison's commentary on it in Wizard, especially his revelation of the villain's true identity. Gotta say I missed that one until now, puts the whole run in a new light knowing who the bad guy actually is. Makes me feel stupid for not catching it sooner.

Madamoiselle Bolyn is a different take on Ann Boleyn. Most books about her only do her time in Henry VIII's court. This one is about her childhood in France (and apperantly the Netherlands) and all her adventures there (she apperantly befriended Leonardo Da Vinci according to the back cover. It would be Da Vinci's last days tho as the book starts out in 1514 and Da Vinci died in May 1519)

Just finished Kurt Vonnegut's Breakfast of Champions, over a period of less that two days. I always wondered if maybe people were spreading their literary jizz over his stuff for no reason (sorry for the visual), but it was seriously good. Surreal, sardonic, relevant, right up my alley. It even got me to start writing my own fiction again, which I've barely been doing this summer.

Taking a break from depth, I've started Stephen King's It tonight. It's my first experience with a horror story of any great length. Normally I shy away from genre (outside of comics, of course), but the man's got some serious writing chops. If nothing else I can appreciate the craft, and hopefully, get a little scared too.

I also want to try to knock off a Tolstoy before classes start again. Maybe Anna Karenina.

Just finished an excellent book titled The Thirteenth Tale, by Diane Setterfield. Wonderful writing, interesting story & characters.

Am now reading The Interior, by Lisa See, which is set in modern China. I enjoyed her book Snow Flower and the Secret Fan (went into detail about the old Chinese custom of foot binding...shudder), though this isn't as good thus far.

After these I have 3 Star Wars books to read: one about the Death Star and two about Darth Bane. :tthumbsu:

Right now I'm reading "The Meaning of Night" by Michael Cox.

Once I finish with that I'm going to re-read the Gemma Doyle Trilogy (A Great and Terrible Beauty, Reble Angels, The Sweet Far Thing) by Libba Bray, and then move on to read "Loop" by Koji Suzuki.

I'm planning on getting "House of Leaves" by Mark Z. Danielewski since I've heard very good things about that book and the author.

I'm also reading some H.P. Lovecraft at the moment. Just coming towards the end of "The Colour Out Of Space". Pretty cool and chilling stuff. Gotta bunch of short stories on an app on my iPod for a coupla quid, definitely worth it. There's about sixty short stories there.

The Colour Out of Space is still one of my absolute favourites. There's something entirely unsettling about it, and the things about it that actually give me chills are so odd that I can't help but feel weak at the ways in which Lovecraft can turn the simplest and most harmless things into nightmares.

I'm really curious about Strain... I picked it up, and read some of it....but I don't really know how much of it is del Toro's voice and how much is the other writer.

I'm also reading some Lovecraft stuff...but I'm also reading a lot of Adrian Tomine graphic novels, like Summer Blonde, and his Optic Nerve stuff.

I picked up some new Iron Man graphic novels...and he's pretty much a ****. Not -the- ****.

I just finished reading Hunter S. Thompson's The Rum Diary and now am reading Charlene Harris' Dead Until Dark... After that I hope to finish out her Sookie Stackhouse vampire series... And unlike popular demand I refuse to read Twilight books... The way those vampires are they are not like Bram Stoker, Anne Rice and other writers... That's just my opinion...

As for the Pride and Preduice and Zombies I have seen that book at the store and I also had a very interesting conversation with a librarian at a local junior high... She said that reading Jane Austin's original novel was too hard so she got the one with zombies instead... Personally I think everything is a little better with zombies but being a librarian I think "and Zombies" would be more toward the bottom of the reading list...

While on vacation I read:

Conqueror by Georgette Heyer. An interesting take on the life of William The Conqueror. It's mostly from the POV of a friend of his named Raoul De Harcourt (altho history says the Harcourt who went to England was named Errand. He had a brother named Robert. There WAS a Raoul De Harcourt but some 300 years after William the Conqueror).

To The Tower Born by Robin Maxwell. Initially set a couple months after the death of Prince Arthur Tudor. Queen Elizabeth of York and her friend Nell Caxton (daughter of the William Caxton, the man who braught printing of books to England and translated many into English) tell the story of the lost princes, Prince/King Edward V and Prince Richard of York, brothers of Queen Elizabeth of York. Elizabeth (or Bess) and Nell tell the "true" story of what happened to the princes and their involvement in the whole mess to a 10 year old Henry VIII. Interesting story with rather interesting theories.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princes_in_the_Tower

To Hold The Crown by Jean Plaidy. This is the first book in a 9 book series about the Tudors. It's mostly the reign of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. Mostly Henry's er paranoia over claiments to the throne (like people pretending to be one of the lost princes).

An infamous book is James Joyce's Ulysses, because it had some mild bad language in it ("Not bloody likely!") and was banned in Boston. Not that it was genuinely vulgar like Lady Chatterly's Lover, but its reputation for having been banned did cause a sensation and cause it to become popular. In actuality, the book turned out to be incomprehensible to anyone who wasn't thoroughly acquainted with Irish culture. :P

It's called stream of consciousness. You don't need to be acquainted with Irish culture, you need to be acquainted with the main character on a very intimate level.

While not as good as Already Dead, I'd also check out The Strain by Guillermo Del Toro (Academy Award winning writer/director of Pan's Labyrinth, Blade 2, Hellboy, etc.) and Chuck Hogan. It's a more recent book, came out about a month ago. I didn't love it, I prefer my vampire books to be more supernatural and less real world/scientific, but it's definitely a fun read. I just finished Darth Bane: Path of destruction. It was a fun read all the way through because I enjoyed the Knights of the Old Republic game by Bioware. The author, Karpyshyn, also wrote for the game and it showed through in this book.

The book takes place 3,000 years after KOTOR but it's still heavy with shout outs to Revan. Anyway, now I'm halfway through the second Bane novel, Darth Bane: Rule of two. Pretty good so far...

Now onto the final book of the series, which when I took it off the shelf, this pages have started to come out of the spine, which is bloody typical. I've only read it twice before (I'm a Dark Tower junkie) and i'm pretty good at looking after books. So gonna go find it in tpb form tomorrow, so I can read it and travel about at the same time.

I finished The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch by Philip K. Dick a while ago and it was quite a headtrip. The themes of reality and unreality and the use and consequences of the use of a drug called Chew-Z is really what kept me intrigued.

I am currently reading Synners by Pat Cadigan. It's finally starting to pick up depsite its elaborate detail. Even if I don't end up liking it, paying $2.50 for it at the used bookstore wasn't a bad deal, considering that I had a gift certificate, which I used to also buy The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch and Saga of the Swamp Thing: Volume 1.

Just about to finish up John Dies at the End by David Wong. I've also started in on my first kindle book, Anxiety by Rhett Reese (the debut novel from the co-writer of Zombieland). Before that was Jack Ketchum's The Girl Next Door. Up next is probably going to be a re-read of Dennis Lehane's Gone Baby Gone before I start in on his new novel, Moonlight Mile. Somewhere in there I gotta find time for Stephen King's newest collection, Full Dark, No Stars and a huge stack of TPB's. And that's only the very top of my unread pile. I buy way too many books. :/

Is that the graphic novel? Been on the fence about getting it. Any good?

No, that's Redemption, and yes I liked it. You can find the hardcover through Amazon for a great price!

Anyway, lots of people give it flak because Liara was all gung-ho let's go and being kick ass, but honestly I didn't see her acting much differently than how she acted during my ME1 playthrough. I think folks had this "shy, timid, naive" asari idea about her from her initial characterizations without taking into account the fact that she was thrown into some pretty deep stuff and had to learn how to survive or be killed very fast, not to mention she helped take out a rogue Spectre and uncover the threat of the Reapers, AND watch her lover (if you played as such) be blown out of the sky.

That's some heavy stuff for a person to process, so I understood how she could act "out of character".

Go into it knowing what it is: a lead in to ME2 and Lair of the Shadow Broker, meant to provide a bridge and give a glimpse of what Liara went through to arrive at the place we see her in ME2, and enjoy it as such.

Krutch

Sounds interesting. Yeah, she was my lover when I played through with my female Shepard. We started making out again once I met up with her again in ME2 :P
