It may or may not come as a surprise to anyone here that I am a big Sabrina: the Teenage Witch fan. Now, I realize the Melissa Joan Hart sitcom was kinda corny (not as corny as the movie), but I just really like the Sabrina comics. Before I dive into the new Manga-styled comics, I'd like to give a rundown of my opinions of the previous versions.
Original Archie Comics:- This is, without a doubt, my favourite version of Sabrina. These were mostly short stories. And, in them HARVEY HAD BLACK HAIR, Aunt Hilda and Aunt Zelda looked like classic Halloween witches (and they weren't so different from each-other), and Sabrina herself was a witch learning about the mortal world! (Not a "normal girl" who found out she was really a witch).
60's Cartoon:- Never seen this one, but would really like to! Appearantly, It was part of some "Archie and Friends" cartoon show, that is now on DVD. If anyone knows of a store chain that sells these, please tell me.
The Movie:- How boring. That's all I can really say about it. This established the version of Sabrina (as played by Melissa Hart) that grew up normal, and then learned she was a witch, and because this was the basis for the sitcom, that continued into....
The Sitcom:- Cheesy and dumb but entertaining, I liked the supporting cast ALOT better than the movie. The actor who played Harvey was perfect but THEY SHOULD HAVE DYED HIS HAIR BLACK, DAMMIT! Anyway, the college years were just a big sleepy wait for her to get back with Harvey, but the (admittedly great) concluding episode redeemed it.
2000s Cartoon:- OK I guess, but Kinda f**ked up. About as far away from Archie as you can get.
And, NOW the TRUE topic of the thread: The Manga-styled version of Sabrina! This so-called "Manga" is actually just a new version of the comic, done by archie, which is drawn in a more anime-esque style to simultaniously cash in on the "anime trend" while separating the franchise from all the Melissa Joan Hart crap. I definately dig it!
Now, this is the third continuity line for the comic, the second one I skipped because it seemed to be based on the sitcom. I was hoping they'd return to "Old-School Sabrina", but this is almost as good. It seems to take a few cues from both the sitcoms, and the old comics, but mixes in plenty of it's own stuff, as well as a continuous storyline! (BTW HARVEY HAS BLACK HAIR AGAIN).
Sabrina seems to be comfortable with both the "Witch" and "Mortal" sides of her life, so thankfully there's none of this "fitting in" crap. It's more about relationships (and magic powers) than anything else.
Anyway, I really like the character Shinji, I was even (Blasphemy) half-rooting for him to get Sabrina during the "Love-Triangle" issues. But, it was cool how he helped get Harvey and Sabrina get together when he realized Harvey was a nicer guy.
The real question is what is that thing on his chest that he says ruined his life. I'm thinking it's either a nasty scar, or somekind of "demon-mark" what do you think?
