But there really are odd things out there. Not just on the net, but also in real life. I mean, did you know that "Amen" and "Halleluja" were onomatopeias of a donkey's scream, but they have been changed millions of times.

Oh, I've got more of those.
The bible mentions Noah's wife five times, but she's never given a name.
The bible doesn't mention cats.
All authors of the new testament are Jewish, except for Luke
The ethiopian church worships Pontius Pilate as a holy person
Queen Elizabeth II. is anglican in England but presbyterian in scotland, but she's head of church in both countries.
Russian proverb (I swear I don't make this up): If God had thought, that a woman was useful, he would have been married.
There's plenty more. Not only focussing on church but only on biology, history and biographies. And I assure you I haven't ever been in the position to actually use this knowledge.

There is actually a German book which takes on the Bible nin a funny way. Not that I read it, but it's called "Die Bibel nach Biff" (The bible according to Biff) and it's supposed to be really funny. And there's numerous religious comic books out there. All dead boring to heaven and back.

Well, I was baptized, went to church regularly, and even church school. Went to church events including creepy ceremonies and funerals. Other than go to a Catholic grade school and high school, I was purly Catholic.
Then, as I grew up, I began to question my religion... the Bible... the "laws"... my faith.
I eventually had no faith in my religion any more.
I now try to make sense of the universe through my perseption rather than what is writen in some book... though, usually I just accept things as they are without putting too much thought into it.
There are things that will never be answered. Not by anyone or any writen script.
Hey, as long as you're comfortable with it. I'm a man of science, and after much education, I've had ideas in my head that contradict God's words. There are so many laws in the bible that if they were all strictly enforced, Lucifer would have a hard time finding room for everyone. The bible really is a long and drawn out way of saying "help someone out if they need it and do what you think is the right thing." It's very simple if you think about it, and it's also not hard to do.
But I'm going to stop there, because religion discussions aren't allowed.
Zachatello00
07-05-2005, 03:08 AM
Too bad we had to stop it before I started replying. Typical. Everyone bashes and/or makes blatant misconceptions about your religion and as soon as you come to defend it or correct them, the "no religion discussion" rule gets dropped. Oh well. I've come to expect it.
 Moving right along
What a Bible College really is is a private school where people come to specifically focus on ministry training. Like say, medical school for doctors to be. As a minister in training, Bible college is ideal for me. It's fully accredited just like any other college or school, but it's also equipped with courses on practical ministry skills and there are classes covering each book of the Bible, some that obviously cover well more than one book, as there are several books in the Bible.
We also have math, english and science classes that we have to take, you can't escape those.
Anarky
07-05-2005, 03:45 AM
So you actually have classes called "Noah" and stuff like that? What do you do there, a word-for-word analysis of the text or what? I mean, telling the story doesn't take more than two hours...
ThirdMarioBro
07-05-2005, 03:51 AM
Meh, I quit listening to other people's interpatation of the world eons ago. remember, my family has their own ideas about how the world works, and I have my own, so I just decided to go by my own rules rather than listen someone else preach it to me.
In Tulsa, there's so many Churches, I feel like I'm boxed in half the time. People around here are too stiff. You have to go fourty miles out of town before you can even find a good dance club. It's rediculious.
Zachatello00
07-05-2005, 09:19 AM
We have classes like, Pentatuech (first 5 books) and Acts of the Apostles, Prophets covering Isaiah through Malachi) stuff like that. We don't necessarily go word for word by the text, as that can get just as you would imagine: boring. But, we do context and background studies, we look into the original languages for the books to catch any missed translation issues, or if not missed, than missunderstood. You'd be suprised how much you'd fit into a semester. The Bible, just like any other collection of books is littered with history, spawns different stories, and guides a way of life. As you could imagine, we spend quite a bit of time on it.
Look at the way the church has split. You've got Catholics, Baptists, prebetarians (sp?) , Methodists, African Methodists, United Methodists, etc.
Obviously, there is a bit of confusion as to how things in the Bible are to be understood. As a result, we spend a considerable amount of time in background checks to ensure the most accurate understanding. Unfortunatly, not everyone does this, which is why there are so many different "sects" of the church, as it were.

What's the difference between your school and a seminary, Zach?
Jester

Bible College provides the basics, seminary is more in depth. That's all the diffrence I know of. Aside from Bible classes though there are practical classes on how to say runn a youth ministry, or run the education ministry of a church, or share your faith without forcing it on someone...

Mr. Ai's Dad: Hello
TMB: Hello, I...Uhm... I came to see the show.
AD: What show?
TMB: Your son... uhm... is hosting a show tonight.
AD: What show?
TMB: He... uhm... it is a special surpise show
AD: Quite a lot of "uhm"s you've got there...
TMB: Yeah, well ... uhm.. he actually told me that his RISC-chip in his new PC was broken and needs a bypass with the serial bus which we'll hook up with a small LCD-monitor. *pulls out GBA* Here you see.
AD: Well, tell me you're going to do that tech-stuff. Come in, he's in front of his computer.
TMB: Thank you.
After a while, TMB, Ai, his parents and his aunt sit on the table and drink something.
Ai's aunt: This just reminds me of the day when the priest said...
Ai gets up, takes a good swing and punches his aunt in the face.
TMB: Bwahahaha. That was worth my money. 5 bucks, was it?
Ai: Make it ten, my fist hurts.
TMB: But you said...
Ai: I didn't know how much it'd hurt...
Meanwhile Ai's family sits there, stunned.
Can I come, too? All you'd have to pay would be my transfer. I'd even tape it on video and stuff. :D
It'd be worth it, because I'd probably do more than punch her in the face. The truth is no one on my mom's side of the family likes her. We put up with her because my uncle is a really cool guy and everyone loves him. We always talk about her behind her back because that's the kind of family we run. She's a terrible parent, too. My two cousins are spoiled beyond human comprehension. For example, my one cousin got a Nintendo DS for graduating kindergarten. He also has a computer in his room that has quite the hardware. It's sickening, and I hate going to her house. Actually, I make up excuses for not going to her parties. I'm running out of excuses. Man, I hate that woman. If it wasn't for my uncle, I'd have told her off already.

What's the difference between your school and a seminary, Zach?
The main difference is that Bible college is a little more General, as Jester pointed out. Seminary is the next step of the Bible College grad. I'll actually be starting seminary here next year when I graduate Bible college. Seminary just sort of hones in on specifically what you want to do. Like, for me, I'm interested in teaching theology. So, after I gradute BC this coming spring, I'll head to Seminary to learn specifically about different aspects of Theology. I'd like one day to teach at a Bible College as a professor of theology.
As for the mean aunt goes, I hate that for you. You wouldn't beleive the number of "christians" who shove their faith in people's face. What really sucks is that it makes those of us who really, genuinely do care about others look just like her. I don't know how many people I've lost the opportunity to speak to solely on the basis that some jerkbag "christian" just gunned them down with tracts about how they are going to Hell. While i do believe Hell to be a reality, I cannot use it to scare people into the faith.
Motivation for faith needs to come not out of a fear of going to Hell, but out of a willingness to start a relationship with your creator. So I feel for you, really I do. If it makes you feel any better, I always throw away tracts like that when I see them hanging around gas stations or resturants or whatever.
I'm completely unfamiliar with the catholic church, and how they do their stuff. The only thing I've ever seen from catholic "christians" is basically what people have been writing: Do what you want and feel guilty about it. I assure you, that's not how Christians, real Christians live their lives.
I agree that pushing the "Hell" thing on people to start their faith is no way to go about it. My aunt does that sometimes, and it's wrong. It's everyone's choice to have faith or not. You should always respect people's religions or lack of religion. Present them some material, but don't force it on them, and if they say no, then that's that. That's how I always felt.
I'll admit that I am Christian, but I haven't gone to church in some time. I haven't opened a bible in a few months, either. :(

Yes. That's pretty much Catholic life. Unlike Christians who are all about God's love and how beautiful and bright life is, with Catholics, it's about how grim things are and how dark and disfigured the world is. In Catholism, death has more importance than birth, and there's always talk about how the devil walks among us. The Catholic church basicly spells out that we're all going to Hell and only the truly good people will be protected while their stay in Hell.

Yeah, the problem is that most people seemed programmed to rag you to death. I know some people who will basically rag you to death about it, and if you say now, they drop you like a hat because their preacher told them to. It's basically, "You're either in the club, or you're in hell". I can't stand that. People should respect other people's religion or lack of like you said. It's their life to do with as they please. People constantly try to convert me, and I tell them "I already am!" but they presist. The reason is, they're not satisified until I'm in the pulpit every week giving them money.
I don't blame them. It's what they were trained and raised up to do, especially in this region of the country, but sometimes I'd like to just get up and bust a chair over their heads and go home.
