I figured I had some questions, so I might as well ask, and anyone else can too.

So

If I have a remaining balance on my bill, say $1,400. Will the college let me start classes, if I have $8,600 paid?

Just wondering...

Most colleges will help you sort out the remainder of your tutition bill, either by implementing some sort of monthy payment system or finding a couple of last minute grants and scholarships to cover your ass. Some schools also offer a couple month grace period, if your finances aren't looking too good.

But I wouldn't count on them doing it for you. Go see your Admission Office as soon as possible, and sort it out with them. If you walk into classes on the first day without talking to admissions before hand, expect to get obligatory "I don't see you on the roster, son. I can put you on the waiting list though," from most of the professors.

Let's just hope you don't go to one of those asshole colleges.

Yeah, DH is right. Get to Admissions right away. Preferably in person so they know you mean business. In my experience colleges don't want to help you at all, so you have to get on their case about it. Call them every day and make sure that YOUR issue is being addressed accordinly. Don't let up, these people don't give a damn about you unless you make them. So lay it on thick and give them a guilt trip. ;)

Good luck.
