I read a few months ago that there was a Denial of Service attack against this website and I've been meaning to ask about it. Who did it and why would they do it to this site of all places?

I'm still not completely sure who did it or why (or if it was accidental or on purpose), but I did report them to their ISP who said they would take care of it. My guess is that they had some kind of program that was automatically reloading the main page and they left it going for a couple of days, even after I blocked their IP address from the site.

It's strange that it kept going even after you banned the IP. It might've been a security vunerability on the server itself. I'm about to take over server administration on a site that's running Redhat Linux and there's updates for it to fix security holes that allow DoS attacks.
And why is the number of my posts still staying at 57?

I'm not entirely clear on what a DoS attack is...could somebody fill me in?

A DoS or Denial of Service Attack is exactly what it says. It denies access to a service requested by users of a network, server, workstation or other resource. A perfect analogy of this would be someone locking you out of your own bathroom or "denying you service" to your bathroom.

It did waste a ton of our bandwidth, though. And why is the number of my posts still staying at 57?I'm not sure, but it looks like it's fixed now.
