That's cool that it got a shout out at least. TMNT comics rarely get any respect these days.
Ummmm..bedbug not to sound rude but could you make some use of grammar and/or punctuation? Your posts are difficult to read.

Well Bed Bug, look at it this way: The turtles are respected and were not on the overrated list.
I'm surprised they were even mentioned at all...i mean, i'm a fan and all, but this volume for me, IMO, is very slow and at best disjointed....again I continue to read it, and I find the Tales to be a much better read, but for outsiders who are true TMNT fans to enjoy it that I find hard to believe...so let's just be happy that it got mentioned at all...

That's cool news. It's about time they got some recognition somewhere. And it's true, The TMNT is one of the most underrated comics properties of all time. All people think about is (stereotyping ahead) "ugghh, Silly little kids book"..and pass it up.

I agree that as a whole, the TMNT property is very much underated in regards to great comics of all time....however, if I'm reading this right, this award is in regards to noteworthy comics of 2005 only...that would take into consideration only Volume 4 and not the entire run of comics...not even Tales...

Yeah TMNT has always been underrated in the comics dept. Considering it started out as a comic and became a billion dollar franchise spinning off more cartoons and toys than most marvel or dc big name properties I'm completely surprised it doesn't do better. I'm sure if Mirage pushed it correctly (gave it big name writers/artists) it would do better, but then it may become too commercialized. It's got that sort of underdog modest feel to it. Like it's out there only to tell stories not make money.

Is Larid even making money off the comics? I thought he was doing them for his own enjoyment.
Well, I'm sure he's making something...though definately not the boatload he was making in the past...

In #22 he hinted that the new comic isn't turning a profit.

No, he does it because he wants to. If he doesn't want to do it anymore, he won't.

Yeah, n°5 & n°9 are my favorite tales. When Lawson is in full control, he's doing some wonderful dark and sour stories (loved TMNT vol.2 for that). One of the main reasons why TMNT is underrated is because many people expect it to be a mainstream superhero or a kiddy comic, when in fact it is an alternative, independant comic. Mirage could probably make it profitable by maintaining the small diffusion it had at first, but Laird has enough respect for TMNT readers (and I'm using «readers» instead of «fans» on purpose...) to keep it worldwide, even if it's costing him money. The rest of the franchise brings enough cash anyway. Another problem is the bad publicity that some self-proclaimed «fans» are doing to the books, always complaining about how baaaaad it is «Me die-hard TMNT fan wants action! Me wants big name comic book writers! Me wants realist art!» (Note : they did that some time ago, and it was called TMNT vol.3, it was produced by Image, and it was just plain mainstream uninspired, passion-less crap). Mirage should find europpean editors and translate it; that alone would triple the readership overnight. And they could push the political edge without getting the usual republican backlash :D

Yes indeed, I agree. TMNT is more art-comes-to-comics, with stories more about bitterness and being alone than anything else. I think it was in Sons of the Silent Age's lettercol that someone mentioned that TMNT are the thinking man's mutants.

acually its been a while since i thinked
one of the reason its underrated is it gets almost no publisity the only magazine that features it is previews but only because they have too
no online comic sites feature it(i think)

That's a good insight, though I think more can be done with the TMNT. I wasn't a fan of Lawson until I read his Tales work. I also appreciate all types of art after having taken a few art classes after TMNT started so I can accept Lawson's different style and even enjoy it sometimes.
After reading Eastman's Artobiography it showed how the art wasn't as great as many people make it out to be on these boards. Don't get me wrong Eastman and Laird's style is my favorite for the TMNT, though nowadays I think it might be due more to nostalgia. Both have definitely grown as artists since then, but if you know your TMNT you know the first few issues were based on Frank Miller's Ronin style which was never my favorite to begin with.
Look forward to more posts by you Jaf, you're definitely an alternative to the other posters on these boards (not that they're opinions aren't any worse, just making observation).
Just checked in Mirage's catalog; it seems Tales aren't doing so bad after all : some issues are sold out! And guess which ones? n°5 & 9, the Lawson ones. Guess we're more out there than it shows on the forums. 8)
