OK, I was sitting around watching my OT TMNT DVDs and I noticed something. The guys never used the whole Leo, Don, Raph, Mikey name abriviations. In the 1st 2 seasons, I didn't notice any times those names were used. They are used in the movies, and the new toon, and posibily the Archie comics. But what is regarded by most as the most silly and kid oriented version of the green team, they call eachother by their full names....comments?

Well it's bean a long time since I've seen the other seasons, but I really don't remember them ever being said.

Well, Raph abbreviated Donatello's name once in Hot Rodding Teenagers from Dimension X.

'Book 'em, Don-O!' :P

Maybe to keep younger kids from getting confused. Or to score points with parents-- your kids sound smart saying stuff like "Michelangelo" and "Donatello."

What would be confusing?

Yea if anything it would easier to remember....i mean the names are alot shorter and they dont end in "o" for the most part...

It was probably to make the TMNT more unique and memorable at a time when the only ones who knew of the TMNT were from the comic community in the 80's.

Think about it. "Mikey" could be so many other characters out there. Now "Michaelangelo" is unique and when people hear it, they think of either the painter or the turtle.

Now that the TMNT are so popular and well known, many people will match up "Mikey" with our beloved ninja Michelangelo.

I noticed that too when I bought the DVDs. It's interesting...makes them sound kinda formal haha. I like the way the abbrs were used in the movies... Leo, Mikey, Don (with an occasional Donny) and Raph. I hate in the new series (and I think some of the comics?) that they call Raph, Raphie.... he's just NOT a Raphie to me.... he's too macho for that! ;p

Jester
08-13-2005, 05:11 PM
That's exactly why they call him Raphie...it's kinda a barb...:p

Space Lieutenant Josh

I meant it would be confusing if they used both names. Like if they called Mike "Mikey" sometimes, and "Michelangelo" other times, with "Mike" thrown in for good measure. Granted, most kids would be able to figure these little things out, but the really young ones might not get it.

Thats a good point but I don't think they were thinking that far down the line...I mean, if they knew how HUGE the tmnt would turn out to be, I wonder if they would've made the same decisions they did...you never..hindsight is 20/20... but again, good point.. :)

There was one time , in the episode "Usagi Yojimbo", where Michaelangelo was going to fight the foot soldiers and Donatello said something like "Forget it, Mikey. Our friend Usagi's already taken care of it."

That's one thing I didn't care for the old show...they never were a family.Family members call each other by shortened names or nicknames.

Splinter even referred to the turtles as HIS FRIENDS...not his sons. That was just wrong.

I call em Mike,Raph,Leo and Donnie. Ya know it's like they're part of my family in a way. I dunno...im wierd.

I call em Mike,Raph,Leo and Donnie. Ya know it's like they're part of my family in a way. I dunno...im wierd.

You know when I was watching the classic series of the TMNT when I was younger I always got the empresion that they where a family and not just a bunch of friends hanging around and living together.

Where the new TMNT and the classic one differ is that the classic one they all act like the are a suragate family or adopitive family. So the TMNT where family but not a blood realated family. In the new toon the TMNT act like they are a bilogical family, like they are all blood relations with one another.

And yes In the classic series I do specifically remeber hearing Splinter call the TMNT as his "sons", and he has on occassion said that they are brothers as well. Its not to often but he has said it on more than one occasion before. Splinter from the old series behaved like an adoptive father to the TMNT rather than a bilogical father like he does in the curent series. Which is actually more acurate in some respects because I dubt that they are all from the same litter of eggs. But doesn't matter because they all grew up together and thus they where brothers. **shruggs**

And actually I rather like it when the the TMNT call each other by their full names. Mostly because the TMNT have distingushed and unique names that is rather rare, and it is kind of a shame that they chop it up and make it so ordinary.

I feel the same way about my little sisters name, she has a very pretty name in my personal opinion and some people chop it up and shorten it, and I feel it takes away what is special about her name. But hey thats just me. And I guess you are right though about the TMNT useing their full names as being rather formal, but to be honest I never thought of it as that way, I wicked loved the TMNT's names and saying them when I was younger (though I used to have a hard time saying Leonardo's name sometimes).

In the new toon I have to say I don't really mind any more that they abriveate their names with one another. Because that seves as a an indication to how the turtles are feeling at any given time. For instance I notice the turtles only call each other by their full names when they are really pissed of at each other, or if one of them is in danger they call out their full names, or if they are feeling very serious at a particualr moment.

If what I said makes any sence.

I prefer when they address each other with their full names - they're much more melodic than the abbreviated versions. Especially "Michaelangelo" is good one in this case.

I too like the full names better. The TMNT have beautiful names. When they're shortened, they sound... mediocre.

I would give my son (if I had one) any one of the TMNT names. Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, Michelangelo... They all sound beautiful.

Hey, Buslady... Didn't you say that you would have liked your son's name to be Raphael, but your husband wasn't interested in the name?

Another difference between old and new toon concerning names - Splinter.

In old toon, he was nicknamed like that by turtles "for obvious reasons" - because he splintered wooden planks with his teeth and palms. In new toon, it's shown that one of the boys calls him like that. The question is - was it his name under Master Yoshi or just a name adopted for turtles, chosen accidentally (because one of them said that).

About calling TMNT "sons" - have Splinter done such a thing in Mirage comics?

Nah, Chris was named after Christopher Lloyd. If I were to pick one of their names, It would be Mike. I don't think Eric would dig it if it were full on Michelangelo though! But I can live with Michael.
