View Full Version : Doom still hates his PS2

It's been no secret around here that my PS2 has been broken for quite some time now. The dreaded "Disc Read Error" problem. It plays PS1 games fine, but refuses to read PS2 discs or DVDs. I had a hankerin' to play some Smackdown vs Raw, so I decided to crack the sucker open and follow the instruictions on THIS PAGE (http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars?84539). The very same web site helped my brother repair his, after all. So, I go through all the steps (minus the canned air bit), and I still have no results. I thought I'd run it by the drome one more time to see if anyone has any suggestions.

I had the same problem with the DVD drive on my PC. It played CDs but no DVDs. Turned out that the DVD laser was broken so I sent it to hell.

The Drive on the PS2 wears out and canned air ain't gonna fix it. the best bet is to replace the whole thing or get a new PS2

Far as i know...and im an idiot

I know this isnt going to help, but i remember hearing this about a year after the PS2 originally came out, that the PS2s had problems reading discs. and that they would eventually stop working, but luckily that problem was fixed with the later releases of the system. so.. your best bet is to just go and buy a new PS2.

Dr. Doom

And I totally would if I had the money to. Thsu why I'm trying to salvage this one.

The first time I sent it in for repairs. The 2nd time I opened it and cleaned it and it worked like it was brand new. It even loaded games faster. Maybe you should do the canned air part. I did it by hand though. I used paper towels and windex. I opened up every little part unscrewed and removed everything*Putting it back as I did it* and by the time I was done it was all clean and working nicely. It was caked with dust inside. No idea why I took good care of it. Anyways hope that helps because that got rid of my diskread error.

I should try the compressed air thing. because on the outside my ps2 looks brand new. im scared to crack it open.

ThirdMarioBro

I saw someone try compressed air on a Dreamcast because they were scared to open it, and all they did was bend a transistor out of shape thus killing the system. It's better to just open your PS2. It's probobly a more delicate system inside, so opening it would be the healthier option in the long run. Those compressed air things are risky.

Btw, I cracked open my Dreamcast and cleaned the power supply and all was well. The same, or a similar problem might be wrong with your PS2. Sometimes the lazers just get caked wth dust.

I opened up my PS2 in an attempt to fix my read error problem, and I broke off a circuit that was part of the power cord! YEAH!

....then I had to buy a new PS2.

SEND IT IN!!! Call sony and tell them your problem and they will tell you what to do. I had the DRE so I called them up, and they instructed me to send it in for repairs. They fixed it for free!! So DON'T buy another PS2

Maybe that has something to do with each household in Japan housing 2 PS2s? o.O.

Lie everyone's been saying, your best bet is to just open it and clean it up. If it dies, well hey... you needed a new one anyway, right?

I think you should just clean it with the compressed air if that doesnt work send it in to sony , but dont open it, at least the air and a damp cloth worked for me it doesnt give me any trouble now

Dr. Doom
09-12-2005, 05:22 PM
yeah, well, sony isn't gonna touch the thing now, cause I've already opened it, and there's a weird lil sticker on it that you have to break to open it up. And that voids the warranty. Not that I've had one for the last 4 years.

Psh, there's plenty of other things floating around in there that one screw won't make a diffrence.

Unless, of course, it gets jamed in the motor... in that case, you'll have a problem.

Well, it ain't comin' out any time soon. It's way in there. So I just hafta treat my PS2 like it's made outta toothpicks (it may as well be).

Actually, when I first opened it up, I found a peice of the Bloody Raor 3 disc inside. I then recalled when I rented it from blockbuster and my PS@ like ate part of it. I brought it back and said taht's how I got it, lol.

I give up. I'm buying a new one.

Duke
01-16-2006, 02:19 PM
Well mine finally broke. I had only ever had problems with one game and I just assumed it was the game and not the system but now all I can play is PS1 games. Also from some reason my old ps2 games that pre-date 2002 still work. It almost seems like sony changed their ps2 discs around then just so I would eventually be forced to buy a new one. I'm going to try opening it up, and cleaning it. If that doesn't work I'm getting one of the new flat ones. I hate sony.

I've actually had two of each console this generation. Xbox, PS2 and even Gamecube. It's quite sad really. My second PS2 is nearing it's end though, I can tell. You'd think the 2 year break would do it some good. lol. I might get a new slim PS2 eventually.

I've never had to replace GC or Xbox, but the PS2 replacement was my fault. I had to try and play 1337 h4x0r and open it up to clean the inside. :(

Dr. Doom

And, we've had the PS2 since the day it came out (and Gamecube and XBox and 360) and we've not had a problem with any of them. Never needed to replace one. And yes, we DO play them... alot. Hmm... What CAN you boys be doing to your toys. ;) :P

Depends on which wave you buy. The first wave Xboxes were pieces of **** (and the 360's, stupuid pieces of junk). Every first wave console has kinks, bugs and other types of lousy crap to it, thats another reason why its nonsensical to buy a first wave console.

Everyone should play games on PC.

Emulators, nubby. Emulators. :)

Plus the variety of games on PC is so much more expansive than the selection of console games.

The 360 is the ONLY console we've never gotten on the first wave. (We got it the second shipment, about a week before Christmas) and, again, never had a problem. *shrugs*

Please. I'm not forcing anything on anyone. I can't force you to do anything. Last time I checked, everyone else had the discretion and intellegence to determine whether they want to listen to me or not.

Jo Dawn- the 360s (like the first wave of xBoxes) have had a series of major overheating problems, which everybody knows is huge ":dead:" sign. The second wave of 360's doesnt come out until March, you got the second shipment of the first wave, and also lucky.

ThirdMarioBro
01-16-2006, 09:11 PM
No. The units are fine. The Power Supply was overheating (they are almost as big as the system and have three fans in them). Those go bad, system freezes. Microsoft issued a temp fix until they could send people replacements in the mail.

Good idea for sure. Microsoft seems to have more power supply problems. I remember that recall on the power cords for the first Xbox.

01-17-2006, 01:49 AM
The only system that I've had break is the original PSX. Actually, I'm on my third one: the first one had badly skipping FMVs and music due to overheating, and the second one overheated to the point where it no longer booted up. My used Sega CD has problems with sound, but since it still works well other than that, I don't consider it broken. As for my PS2, I've had it for a few years and haven't had any problems, although the controller that came with it isn't working too well anymore...

Peanut, I was merely providing my opinion on which platform I chose to play my video games and what I thought about the Xbox 360, when you decided to bust in--both rudely and defensively. If there is anyone in this thread being a "dick" it surely isn't me. If you cared to read this thread, it is evident that other posters have had their share of "bashing" including you. I have not insulted you, or anyone else on this board, so who exactly am I talking smack about? If you still want to explain how I did "insult", please do so, unlike your initial response when I asked you to do so the first time.

I abode the forum rules while maintaining my opinion. If it offended you, I am sorry for that. Instead of ruining this thread with your banter that makes little sense to me, explain it in a PM to me.

Doom, As for the broken PS2, I would take Peanut's advice and invest in a newer slimmer, PS2 that is also compatible with the DVD remote control. The slim PS2's are such aesthetically beautiful machines that are extremely nifty. But if you are still determined to purchase a DS, more power to you. Mario Kart DS is possibly the greatest racing game I have ever played, especially if you live near Wi-Fi hotspots.

GWG, just get a new PC with Linux :)

Kid Icarus

Bah. I can't run most of the programs I need on Linux, otherwise I'd have done that by now.

And new PC's cost *more* then what I can get a Mac Mini for. I dare say that that's a first.. an Apple product costing *less* then a PC.

No, I meant I already did make that decision. I could have gotten a new PS2 for my birthday/Christmas, but I decided I wanted a DS instead. I did end up getting Mario Kart and fortunately for me, I was able to connect it to my wireless internet here almost immediately. My PS2 works just fine after I clean the lens off every time, I just can't imagine this thing is gonna last forever. So I would still like to get a new PS2, I just need to save up for one, I suppose.

I have a first wave gamecube which runs like a dream. That's the only system I ever had to have the first day. Well besides the GBA which I actually got 2 months earlier as I imported one from Japan. That one is dead as I accidentally busted the LCD screen, and after doing that I continued to bust it since I was bored.

My PS2 runs very well as well, though I waited until a few months after Grand Theft Auto 3 came out to get it, so it must have been 1 or 2 years after the release. It's a fatty PS2, I try to make it exercise but it's lazy.
