Interesting fact:
Microsoft announces that only the XBox Premium Edition will be released in Japan which will actually cost only as much as the Core System does in Europe. (€295/360$). Excellent decision!

Kid Icarus
09-15-2005, 01:53 AM
If, ya know, the Japanese had any intrest in the Xbox. I think the most it's sold in a week is just over 300 units. The Wonderswan Color was beating it for a while.

Barkworm
09-15-2005, 02:22 AM
Sure, but this case is a little different. The XBox had a total of three games that Japanese players wanted to play (DoA Beach Volleyball, Halo, Ninja Gaiden) while the 360 will follow an all new strategy for Japan. The fact that the Premium Edition is cheaper there than in the rest of the world is a good start. Of course it won't be able to touch Sony but I'm sure it will sell a decent number of units.

Now, I just wanna see it actually playing some games. I want to see Shiggys new Mario project... apparently this controler was designed around it.

Now, I just wanna see it actually playing some games.
Exactly. All the ideas sound nice but I was hoping that they'd show some software. Till they do I'll remain a little sceptical.
BTW, does anyone else think that this is probably the end of multiplatform games on Nintendo consoles? It seems like it would be a lot of effort to pull this in a good way and I don't know if many publishers are willing to spend the time to do so. :ohwell:

Has anyone watched the "Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots" trailer? Apart from the graphics (which are unsurprisingly awesome) I'm pretty disappointed. Snake is depicted as an old geezer who is "exhausted of battle". Frankly, that is definitely NOT the right treatment for one of video game history's biggest bad-asses IMO...

Barkworm, are we forgetting about the 4 Gamecube controller ports already? What, exactaly, does a PS3 controler have that a Gamecube controller lacks?

Yeah, it's crazy to expect people to own a Gamecube controler just to play multiplatform titles.

But that's not the point of the Revolution. It's not your average console. It's not supposed to be.

Barkworm
09-16-2005, 01:29 AM
Barkworm, are we forgetting about the 4 Gamecube controller ports already? What, exactaly, does a PS3 controler have that a Gamecube controller lacks?
I guess that would work just fine but wouldn't it mean that people who didn't have a Game Cube, would have to buy a Game Cube controller seperately? Or do you think the Revo will come with a Game Cube controller?

Dr. Doom
09-16-2005, 03:36 AM
I don't like the idea right now. I really don't. But far be it from me to doubt Nintendo. I'm not giving up on it, I just.....don't know right now. Console gaming, for me has meant holding a solid, 1 peice controller in my hand for about 18 years now. So thinking of that being thrown out the window, that which has been console gaming for my entire life, I'm not exactly overjoyed. I'm a little scared, to be honest. That this is gonna be something that I don't like. I probably will, but this is all just terrible shocking to me.

I'm sure it's having a similar effect on Sony and Microsoft.

I mean, if you think about it, this leaves virtually no room for translation between consoles. If a game is on Revolution, it probably won't be on any other system. If a game is on PS3 or 360, it won't be on Revolution. I'm not saying that's good or bad, it's just an observation.

I'm typing this with 3 hours of sleep, so bear with me.

I was a little surprised at first. I saw what looked like to me a "remote," and thought something was a little wrong. Then I saw you can hold it sideways with the little A and B buttons there. I was like, "oh, that's badass." Then I was informed that you hold it like a remote. Then I was like, "oh, that's kind of dumb." THEN I saw the additional thumbstick, and I was like, "oh, that's badass again!" This new design was something I was hoping for for some time now. With the gyro function and sensors within the controller, it gives us a WHOLE NEW way to play games....but I guess we can't throw the controller anymore, now can we?

ThirdMarioBro
09-16-2005, 04:19 AM
I'm liking that actually. It will mean that each machine will have more exclusive games tha take full advantage of each machine's strengths. More originality and more creativity.

And Barkworm, it's been floating around the TGS Coverage that the Rev will also ship with a modified version of the wavebird (with more standard A,B,X,& Y buttons 'DEATH TO THE GAMECUBE JELLY BEAN BUTTONS!) so that you could use the download service and for backward's compatibility. I mean, the service would kind of be worthless without it. The new controller would be used for all the new gameplay ideas, but lazy companies who want to port, port, port could just use the Wavebird 2.0. I mean, neither of the other two controllers are really any different from their predacessors, so the porting conditions would be the same.

By shipping with both controllers, Nintendo keeps from scaring off third parties who are lazy bastards *coughEAcough* and they can welcome in all the new creative ideas that this wonderful, wonderful new controller brings.

Like I said, the download service is a joke without the packed in Wavebird 2.0, so I'd count on that. One conventional controller, and one badass new controller with one amazingly sexy little piece of hardware included in one tiny little box. This thing is so damn sweet. I cannot stress how much I welcome this new form of gameplay. That controller is a godsend for oiginality. It's a whole new way to play games. That's all I ever wanted. Hell, they've fixed their image problem on top of it. I'm completely satisified.

Oh, and Snake being a geezer is sacrlilidge. Dammit Kojima.

Kid Icarus

Once again, developers can use the Nintendo Gamecube controler. That's why there's those four ports on top of the system, as seen here (http://planetgamecube.com/media.cfm?action=hwshot&id=238&seq=9) .

Also, we have this quote from an interview:

Eurogamer: How is the controller going to work with games that aren't designed specifically for the Revolution - multi-platform titles and so on?

Jim Merrick: We're producing a classic-style expansion controller, based on traditional designs like the Gamecube controller. It's like a shell with a hole in the top into which you slot the freehand-style controller, and then you can play third-party ported games, and retro Nintendo games you've downloaded.

As I pointed out to Barkworm, there is not a single function a PS3 controler has that a Gamecube controler can't preform.

As far as totally changing the way we play games... The NES did that as well. Before you had one joystick and one button. Then it was a joystick and a number pad.

This is like the DS. You have your D-pad and 6 buttons, but then you can also choose to design games around the touch screen and/or mic. You can use both screens, or just use one. hell, you can even choose if your game's going to use both processors or not.

Developers like choices, people. Nintendo's given them plenty now.

Huh? So you swing the controller around or something? Bear with me, I only just got online, and I'm kinda overwhelmed. It sounds pretty weird, but I'm sure some awesome things could be done with it. There's still some things I don't quite understand, and I'm not 100% convinced just yet, but it does look cool.

Like TMB said, they definately need to include a 'normal' controller in the standard package though. I think a lot of gamers will be scared off otherwise, as well as developers that won't want to make 'weird' games for a 'weird' system with a 'weird' controller.

As for MGS4, it looks pretty good. Snake as an old man could work, but not with that design. It just looks too...smooth or something.

And Otacon does look like Kurt Russel.

Peanut

I was pretty confused about it too, but then I saw that small demo video Nintendo showed. Boy, when that guy was using the right hand controller like it was a flashlight, to look around in some spooky game, while controlling movement with the analog stick...that got me thinking. Then when it showed the other dude swinging the remote around to those Zelda-esque sword sound effects...DAMN!

One thing I still don't understand is the depth preception of the controller. I understand you can move things backwards and forwards depending on your distance from the TV, but does that mean for games where that function is implimented that I have to get up from my couch and move?...cause I don't want to.

how the hell are my beloved wrestling games gonna function with the new controller?

Dinny
09-16-2005, 01:09 PM
I just realised Nintendo has a very good chance of coming out 2nd or maybe even 1st this coming generation, infact, Sony may end up coming 3rd. The Xbox 360 will be out this Christmas, so many people are going to buy it. Then, around fall next year, they'll have a choice. That is whether or not they buy a console which delivers the same experiences as their Xbox 360's for around $400 or they could buy the Revolution (which should be far cheaper) and have totally new experiences. So many people should logically choose a Revolution rather than a PS3.

And Stryker, don't forget that the Revolution will also support Gamecube controllers, so if manufacturers are too puzzled about how to port Madden 2008, FIFA 2008 or WWF games, they can just use that.

Im worried about my niche of games.

how the hell are my beloved wrestling games gonna function with the new controller?

How could they not function? Think about this...

You use the analog stick to move your wrestler. quickly tilting your "remote" to either the left or right would cause your wrestler to run in that direction. Strong and weak attacks can be assigned to the various other buttons. Now, you use the A button to grapple. Here's where it gets awesome. Imagine grappling your opponent with A, then using anything, a button, the analog, to go into a move "set up". Let's use a suplex for this example. You push up on the analog stick, while in a grapple, to set up your opponent in the suplex. You then use the "remote" sensor to quickly pull up, on the screen your wrestler will actually attempt to lift your opponent off their feet and into the air. Say your opponent struggles to get down, so you jerk up on the remote again, maybe even faster now. He finally gets into the air, and you hold the remote sensor up for a nice round 5 seconds, then you fling it down quickly to drop your opponent and deliver a brutal stalling suplex.

This control scheme adds a WHOLE NEW LEVEL of interaction with games. You won't just be pushing A to grapple, then a direction to perform a move, you can no perform the move yourself!

Of course, they could always just make the game using the add-on controller Iwata was talking about. The one you slot the "remote" into to play games normally, but with tilt functions and what not.

EDIT: And I just thought of this! Imagine using the bow in Zelda! You have your bow equipped. You bring your "remote" to a certain proximity of the screen and then you slowly, or quickly, pull the remote back towards you, as if drawing a bow string, then you push A and BAM! Flying arrow! GOD DAMN! Imagine firing off arrows at tons of foes as they approach, then quickly switching to your sword and slashing the crap out of them as they come running at you!

I'm actually beginning to understand all the amazing possibilites this new control scheme provides. It truly IS a revolution!

Anarky

I guess this new controller will be the end of daylong playing-orgies...

I seriously can't imagine anyone to be hopping around all day (Hey, ever played Zelda straight through?) and hitting everybody in the room to death, just to get Link through his newest adventure.

Nu-uh...

I also don't see why anyone would want to, after a day of hard school/work, jump around in the room, killing the person next to him/her just to play Street Fighter or whatever.

But, tht controller itself is a nice gimmick, they should offer that thing as a sort of alternate-controller.

EDIT: The possibilities are endless, but possibilities isn't what counts. It's the player that counts, after all.

Peanut

Yeah, but you forget, the majority of people on this earth are just plain stupid rather than logical. They buy what hype tells them to, then they live with it. Nintendo's going to have to market this like never before. Only then, will people try to understand it.

And I'm thinking we'll see a lot of third parties just using the Gamecube-esque controller thr system comes from because they're lazy cranks. They'll probobly use the new abilities as an after thought until a year or so passes, then the really new/good stuff will start to flow, just like DS.

Mario will probobly use the new controls, Miyamoto's new franchise definately will, they should be a third party game that does as well. Smash Bros will probobly use traditioonal control ond the Wi-Fi (they best not mess with Smash Bros as a fallback), and then there will be a drout of stuff for a while. After that, the reeeeally good stuff should start comming.

Oh, and I expect a lot from this Mario game. This Mario not only has to set a new standard of play...it's also got to erase the past 4 years of Mario Parties, Mario Golfs, and NBA street Mario editions that have rotted my perception of the franchise. No more mascot ********. I want some truly original Mario stuff with the classic Mario feel. However it plays, and whatever new functions it has, I expect it to feel like classic Mario. No more waxy pale washed out Mario Sunshine style. If Nintendo is starting freash, so should Miyamoto. Mario needs to take two steps backward to take a leap forward. I'm expecting a damn lot from Mario 128, because it's got to show us what this thing is capable of. Just like always. I have faith in them to deliever. I mean, they made a mcahine that's capable of things I could have never imagined. I'm just looking forward to seeing how they exploit this thing that's sexier than an Ipod Nano.

How could they not function? Think about this...

Couldn't have said it better. Man, the ideas are really starting to flow now. I usually fear change, but DS taught me otherwise. This is going to be so kickass it's not even funny. I've never been so hyped for a console ever. Hell, I thought the hype would die after they showed the controller. Now it's just more exciting as I think about it. I'm glad 360 is comming out first. That way I can enjoy it pleanty before Revolution because there is going to be such a massive deference between them. Nothing can compete with this level of originality. Nintendo's got balls, I'll say that.

That Zelda example has me drooling.

You have to be kidding me, I dont see MGS4 going to the revolution any time soon, not getting a PS3 is a crazy idea.

I need an Xbox 360 by the time Rumble Roses XX is released.

I heart Rumble Roses.

The remote can sense *tiny* movements. Why the hell would you wave your arm around like a madman?

You guys are acting like with this all of your old games are just gonna burst into flame. Video games have needed a change like this for 15 years now people. True gaming. Not just how things look or sound, but how we play. The analog stick was a small step compared to what this is going to offer.

Besides this controller, the next get has left me completely unimpressed. I've had these same games for ten years now. I want something new, damnit. The DS has shown that new controll methods really are the future of games, not being able to pump a bazillion polygons a second (anyone notice though, the PS3 *still* doesn't have anti-alising? with all the processors in there, why the **** not Sony?).

And now look around. The responses to this little thing are almost completely positive! Now that I've seen the Wavebird shell, I'm almost coverted. All I need now is to see some GAMES.

Yeah games are all I'm waiting for now. it looks really awesome on paper, I hope thye can pull it off this well. I like the thought of being able to use both a standard, and new style controller, depending on what game you are playing.

Maybe, but Hideo Kojima loves the Revolution, so maybe we'll be seeing an all new Revolution only MGS.
Also, if you still don't understand the controller, this should help clear a few things up http://cube.ign.com/articles/651/651559p1.html

I've got another theory: Kojima has been saying for years that he has an idea for an all new franchise. Thing is, he just doesn't get the time to make it since he is always occupied with the MGS games. His comment on the Revo controller was: "That's exactly what I was looking for!" so I suspect that he plans to make his new game for Revolution.

And bless him for it. Snake's finally starting to show his age

Sorry, had to say it. ;)

Anyways, just for note, that IGN pic is just a mockup of what the shell controller is supposed to look like, but that's not the final design. From what our guys said, Nintendo said that pic is almost exact, except that they will likely alter A, B, X, and Y back to their original SNES setup, and that there will be two more buttons added to them to retain the C-Button functionality of the N64 as the C-Stick can't map all of those games properly (namely Star Fox 64, Mario Kart 64, and several others). But the C-Buttons should finally be the same size as the A, B, X, and Y buttons for coherence and uniform design, something N64 and Gamecube lacked. But it will retain that Gamecube feel that melts in your hand. Also, the C-Stick will be there as well in full as well as a larger D-Pad, my personal favorite upgrade.

Basically, new controller, motion sensing, full range movement, endless expansion possibilities + all the functionality of the past contollers in the same box. Perfect. This way the game developers have countless options to explorer. The games for this thing are going to be so massive and varied it's insane. I almost want to push Gamecube off the cliff and get this sucker out now:D

But no, I must wait for Twilight Princess. It will be my one last date with the poor little Cube, then it's time to move on. It'll be sad to let go, but I'll be damned if you could keep me from this thing. It's too damn amazing.

Oh, and if you didn't already notice, the car broke down, so I'm staying home for TGS this year.

Actually, most forums I've checked so far are already ranting about how Nintendo has gone insane without even giving the thing a chance. :ohwell:

It's nice to see that at least this forum isn't full of idiots.

That Wavebird pic has taken away all my worries. I can't wait until we see some concrete software.

I think everyone who bashes this controller just because it doesn't look like the controllers we know is an ignoramus. Like Penny Arcade's Tycho ("I don't have anything polite to say about the controller for the Nintendo Revolution"). Aren't those people the least bit excited about all the new possibilities? I'd lie if I said I don't enjoy conventional games anymore. But I'll buy a PS3 and an XBox360 for those. If the Revo controller works the way I've been daydreaming about for the last 24 hours, gaming will come to a new level. If.

I agree. It's been made pretty clear by now that with the controller shell, conventional gaming will still be possible, yet a lot of people are ignoring this simply because the main unit looks like a remote. Wtf?

All I know is that the media is loving it, and they're the ones who've actually sat down and played with the thing. ;)

By the way, I love how Nintendo has separated themselves from the competition. They really aren't competing with Sony or Microsoft anymore. Basically they're giving the haters the finger and saying: 'Go play your XBox, we are doing things our way, and if you don't like it, this console is not for you'. Whether this is good or bad for them, it takes a lot of balls and I really respect them for it.

Yeah. Nintendo has been more or less like that recently. With the DS being so different from PSP and them just not caring, that seems like their approach these days. It's like I told Peanut on MSN, they seem to be so concerned about their circle of gamers. It's more like a family than a corporation. Sometimes I even wonder if they're concerned about the money...

Kid Icarus

Like most news sites are saying, it's impossible for Nintendo to play "who's got the biggest" with Sony and Microsoft... so why not shift the market in ways they're gonna have problems coping with? Or, better yet, create an entirely new market.

This is why I'm a Nintendo fanboy. Because they're the only company that seems to enjoy scaring the **** outta their fans, but they always pull through and deliver something amazing. Even Virtual Boy was fun, until the headaches set in, lol.

And if what TMB's been told about the add on controller is true... sweet jebus. Best (traditional) controller ever.

Ah, well like you said that probably won't happen for a while after the PS3's MGS release.

I don't have anything polite to say about the controller for the Nintendo Revolution. Watching the DS shift from something I furrow my brow at to something I take with me everywhere has bought them this courtesy.

And another little detail I think we got about the Download service. Stuff published on past Nintendo systems won't be the only things available. Sega already let drop that they planned on making many of their Genesis titles available, but now I hear word of Capcom placing their arcade library on Revolution.

How'd ya like to download Street Fighter Alpha 3 and the like? This news has me extatic. Also, companies may also make new, smaller titles that will be sold excusively online to go along with the big time blockbuster sequel store bought stuff. This has the potential to be like the itunes of video gaming. A place where all the smaller stuff/genres/ect that big publishers don't want to fork the cash up to publish can go. New 2D games, or quicky arcade sequels, or new lever set patches for classic titles could be sold online stright to their fanbase without having to distro it to stores, or pay for disc pressing. Just download it, pay for it, then burn it to a flash card and it's yours. They're also going to have it so that you can burn your downloaded games collection to a DVD or something on your computer for safekeeping.

That alone has the potential to be huge. Hell, small startup groups could have a way to get into game development cheap and help keep the creativity flowing in from new sources. That alsone is a fricking Revolution on top of everything else. All this in one package. Absoultely amazing.

I think he believes their nuts, but he's going to hold off on the "***** ********* YOU NINTENDO" statements until he sees what the thing is capable of because the DS proved itself.

My concern with that is how much these games will cost o_o I wonder how the downloads work too. Because I have a feeling they will be like ROMs. In which case you could download ROMs online and just put them on a Flash card and play. I wonder how all this is going to work. I guess Ill see when it comes out.

According to Iwata only the games with high production costs will cost as much as XBOX 360 games.

I think he means the download games.

In my mind, the pricing should be like this:

NES - $1.00
Game Boy - $.50
SNES - $2.50-$3.00
N64- $5.00-$7.00
GBA - $3.00
GCN - $10-$20

The higher range prices would be for the massive games, things like Super Mario RPG, REmake, and Donkey Kong 64, or just for the really rare hard to find games.

As far as the indie games, that I hope to god Nintendo allows to become part of this, I'd expect them to be higher. They haven't earned money to pay off their development time yet. On the other hand, if they're cheaper, more people will give them a shot, and if a game sells well enough the team might just get picked up. I'd like to see the games anywhere from $2.00-$10.00.

I'd also like to see a way for people to homebrew simple games on the Revolution. Nintendo wants to bring new talent into the industry... what better way then to give people simple sets of things to work with, and build games lego style. Then toss in a low level language that's easy to learn and work with so people can customize the blocks Nintendo provides. Since we're going to be able to use SD cards, let people import their own .png's in for graphics. Nintendo could sell a customer level dev kit for around $50 bucks, that includes PC/Mac software to make animations, or provide that software to people who register a Revolution with My Nintendo.

EDIT: Since we're paying for old games, I think that money should be moved into making online free. I read that they're planning on doing this anyway, which is great. That's how it needs to be done.

MGS4 looks sooo good. :o
I'm still not convinced that Snake really is that old. I mean, we are talking about Kojima, he is capable of showing something like this, and in the first 10 minutes of gameplay, Snake takes off a mask and looks perfectly normal.
The only thing that can look even better is a FFVII Remake. *prays*

And only NES, SNES and N64 will be downloadable I recall.
