1784 ad: Manji gets shot in the head by a priest, but manages to kill his oponent, before... before he gets up and goes home. Manji is immortal, or mostly immortal to be exact. He has the Kessenchu in his body, worms that keep their host alive at any cost. Therefore Manji can't die that easily. You can even chop his limbs off and they can be reattached.
But Manji is sick of all the fighting, after he killed his sister's husband before her eyes thus returning her mind to the mind of a child. But Manji is known as the "Hundred Men Killer" which makes it difficult not to fight. But still, he doesn't pick up the sword which eventually gets his sister killed. He realizes that he can't just quit fighting, that it's his fate to fight. Also, he wants to get rid of the Kessenchu, since he knows that he is not meant to be on this world. So he vows to kill 1000 evil men. If he manages to do that, the Kessenchu will dissappear.
Then there's Rin, a 16 year old girl who wants to avenge her parents which were killed by the Itto-Ryu-fighters. She hires Manji, who is reluctant at first, but feels the urge to help Rin because seh looks like his sister.
Together they wander through Japan, seeking and killing Itto-Ryu-fighters, facing the problems two outlaws have and avoid all the people interested in the Kessenchu.
It's bloody, it's dirty, it's... beautiful. Hiroaki Samura knows how to draw, really. His drawings amaze and take you to another world. There's no SD-crap, there's no funny big heads and funny symbols, it's like real life. It's different.
Who here has read this Manga? Who liked it as much as I do? (Reminds me to steal the other volumes from my brother's room)
And, as usual, to conclude; some impressions:
