Raph's Girl

The official site has the plot synopsis of Tales 17! ACK! I don't even have Tales 16 yet! :ohwell:
Casey and Raph go out for a night on the town with Glurin and the three decide to test the Utrom scientist's dimensional teleportal machine. Donatello agrees to accompany his brother and Jones on the trip, but what they find is anything but inviting.
And Raph rides the bike he has/had in Fox Box/4 Kids show!! :D
There should be a warning tho for people who are Arachniphobic. Yikes! REAAALLLY big spiders! :o

Ok I'm a bit confused by this issue's story. First I don't understand where they went or why. It was kind of a "let's go have the turtles fight giant bugs for no reason" issue. Then towards the end they pull out a dead bird and it leaks gas? And enough gas to blow up a sewer system that isn't even underground as the earlier scene implied it was... just too weird.
This storyline would have worked better as a multi parter rather than a solo issue, but honestly the premise was so "Aliens" that I wasn't too enthralled as I don't appreciate the storie's concept at all.
This issue will soon be forgotten, which is a shame because I think this was probably Jim Lawson's best book so far. The drawing style itself is the same, but his pace and movement was just amazing. I could give a rats ass if the Turtles fought giant bugs or not, but for some reason the flow of the panels made it move rather quickly and smoothly causing me to read all the way up to the last page.
Another story with the middle aged Turtles with utroms. The next issue is going to have utroms in it too. Don't get me wrong I like my utroms every now and then, but if you're going to have them in every book why not just rename it Tales of the Turtles and Utroms. This story could have taken place in the current TMNT book if they really wanted it to, but I can see why it's in Tales. It really has no meaning to the Turtles as a whole, and while I can enjoy books that are based soley on "fun" and "action", this one was just poorly done that I didn't care for it.
I wouldn't mind, in fact I would prefer it if future tales issues took advantage of the lack of a timeline and would go back into the teenage years of the turtles when they fought crime at night in the dark streets of New York. The issue of DWP that featured Raph really made me miss the old school turtles, the ones before it went all SciFi weird.
I can enjoy the SciFi turtles, but I think the normal more realistic New York adventures have their place too, and lately we've been getting all SciFi glam and not enough realistic grit.
I forgot to add a positive remark about the comic that just blew me away. I think this issue's frontispiece (the part where the turtle goes "lemme tell ya a story...") was the best of any Tales issue. I think I liked it because it had to examine a phrase you normally wouldn't, and then it just transitioned into the catchphrase so flawlessly that I knew it was coming but still didn't expect it (if that makse sense). I just like the transition and that the phrase was used as a sentence closer instead of a new sentence. You guys might blow this off and be like "what's he talking about there wasn't anything special there", it's just my own opinion, the front page just clicked with me even though the art wasn't my favorite.

The issue was pretty "meh". I dunno, it was just Raph, Don and Casey fighting giant bugs for no reason.
Again, the single-issue storytelling is what hurts the comic most, as everything ends as soon as it started and you never really care.
Tales is still the best of the TMNT books, but this was simply a low-point.

I really liked the way this one started. REALLY liked it, but it's another case of there not being enough room for the story. I'd be more than happy to shell out a bit more doshi for a longer comic, just so these stories can be paced a little better. It was also blatant where this story had come from, but at least it was self aware (the frill on the queen's carapace was a nice little touch) but still, from an excellent opening it became a bit of a ho-hum issue. Really looking forward to the big 40 pager!

Wow, they're already on #17? I haven't purchased the latest TMNT comic books for quite some time... I need to pick up my reserved copies on pay day, which is tomorrow. :D

Now... see, it's weird that someone would mention that this takes place during the current story line. Well... if everyone remembers correctly, the original Tales took place during the current storyline too. Basically, old turtles retelling tales that never made it to the TMNT Vol. 1 line. This is basically what this issue is, except it's for Vol. 4... and I haven't even read it all the way through yet.
I would also like to mention that I did some looking on the web... (I'll look for the site again tonight) and they already had the cover in full color on the site for issue 19!!!! It looks tite as hell, and it appears to be another really good issue by Dan Berger.

Tales 17 is interesting because it takes place during the week between the Splinter's funeral issue and the next issue.
So sometime during that week Don, Raph, and Casey all went to an alternate earth (Las Vegas was all wrong...the buildings were all in the wrong spots!!! The Hilton was where the Pyramid should have been! WTF?! :o) where the people ruined the planet so much that well...shell happened.
About the only thing I found amusing by this issue was that it was revealed that Cranberry Juice is like alcahol to Utroms.
But what I don't get was how come Donatello was so intune with the Queen??? How was it that only HE could see and sense her???

i seriously hated this issue from the art to the story....the ending wtf I didn't get it they killed the bugs....then the cats are there...wouldn't the bugs have eaten those things...or hell they would have been dead long ago by the way the earth was.....and the woman being there it didnt make sence to me her being alive to if the world was like that....bad bad bad writting.
this is the only issue I hate so far and they really need to keep lawson out of this series unless he can step it up and be a real artist again and not a doddler.
I Really want issue 16 I havnt even seen it...yet this issue just sits on the shelf....

I got issue 16 a couple weeks ago. I got when I bought TMNT #24 and a Spider-Man comic book. From what I heard, I'm glad I bought issue 16 instead of 17. Hopefully issue 18 will be better and not have anything Jim Lawson-related in it.`
