View Full Version : Quick Rant

I just need to rant, I dont intend to hurt any ones feelings here, but this has to be said.

Over the last few weeks I have been rereading my TMNT collection from vol. 1to vol. 4 and the archie series.

When I got to vol. 4...I wanted to scream!
What he did with April and raph and splinter is unforgivable, killing off splinter was unneeded it felt like it was just to help sales

making raph this giant monster has no value to it

and Aprils orgin was...I dont even have words for it!

Does laird even have a direction with this? As a writer you plan were your stories are going to lead to, what the theme is, the values. I havent seen any bit of that in any of these stories.
I know he's a slow paced writer, but this is ridiculous, Peter needs a english teacher with a lot of red ink to go over his scripts.

Its called Teenage mutant ninja turtles, but as far as I understand there not teenagers, and I havent seen any thing to do with ninjas or japan!
So why not rename it Mutant Turtles, to fit in with Lairds science fiction themes.

Every time I pick up a new issue, I am very optimstic I come in thinking "Maybe it will get better, maybe now he's going to show us somthing good?" But I always close the book with even more hate in my heart.

If I remember right, Laird said he's not writing these for any one else but for him self? I could be wrong, again sorry If I am, but he has to under stand if that is true that after awhile when somthing like the turtles becomes popular its no longer in control of the creator, its controled by every one, it has become its own being, and you need to treat it like so.

I've been a fan all my life, turtles are my life. Ask any one that knows me, and they'll tell you I need somthing turtle like in order to get through my day, and this pains me to see what Laird has been doing with the turtles, I think Laird has finally run out of ideas, its time for him to call it quits.

The art in this Volume is very stylized, but at the same time very lazy, I understand where he's coming from as a artist my self, but arent these books bimonthy? Then he has way more time comapared to other artists out there to produces what he once was able to. Making comics his is job and I believe you give it your all in your work, doing half assed work will get you fired at a lot of places.

I enjoy reading Tales of the TMNT, I think those are very innovative in Turtle stories, I enjoy what I get in those books.

A comic is suppose to be a escape from reality, the story and art are suppose to take you to another world. Peter and Lawson do not do a good job at making me believe in the turtles any more, I feel like Peters stories are forced, and Lawson dosent care any more in what he does.

But because of the love I have for the turtles, I will contunie time and time again to buy these comics because of the loyalty I have for them...but I just dont know how much longer I can stay loyal if they contunie this path...

It has always been my dream to be a TMNT comic artist, but I feel my views would get in the way of what Peter wants.

Maybe one day I will see the turtles on the right track again, I still have hope that the turtles can be great again...some day.

hmm. i understand what your saying. i honestly do, but i mean just because somethings happening in the book that you dont like its headed down the wrong path? laird is trying to tell a story. bad things happen in stories. hes already said raph is going to turn back into his normal self, but it wont happen right away. I dont know. i personally love whats happening to these four fictional characters, but then again.. i dont invest myself into it as much as other. i realize at the end of the day its all just a story its not real.

and splinter dying made a lot of sense. he was old. death happens its sad, but it happens.

and as far as aprils origin goes. hell. i thought it sucked too.

At first I thought the same as you. I dentically. But after a while the ideas really grew on me. Except April... what was he thinking! But anyway, It's true there isn't much ninjaing and they are no longer teenagers but I find what he's doing is interesting in it's own right. I definitely dig Tales and I think he knows that the majority of the Turtles reading population prefers Tales hands down, which is why it is monthly.

I don't want to sound to hopeful and I'm not saying this makes everything you said about volume four invalid but #24 was definitely on the right track. Later this month we should be getting #25 which also seems promising. In the past several issues Volume has been looking up, #22 being the lowest it's ever been. We can only keep our fingers crossed.

even if i could find vol. 4 around here, i doubt i'd buy any. i appreciate what peter's doing, i really do, but the way the story's being presented isn't my thing.

if the issues were twice as long, to cover more of this drawn out story, that'd be fine. but to wait two months to be able to eat another crumb... no.

laird is trying to tell a story. bad things happen in stories. hes already said raph is going to turn back into his normal self, but it wont happen right away.

What Laird said there proves my point even more, why have Raph turn into a monster if he's going to go back any way?

Now Laird isnt the only one doing that, such as killing off people and bringing them back, its just a pet peeve of mine.

If your going to do that, it better stick for a long time, and have purpose to it.

I know bad things happen in stories, thats life. I just feel its not being exacuted correctly, I believe these are interesting but down right boring.

I knew splinter was going die, but when I read it, I felt it was a waist.

Sorry again if I pissed any one off, I dont intend to.

I dont like what Peter is doing but it is his property and he can do whatever he wants.

I'm no fan of this Gameraph, drives me nuts..and you all know how defensive I am of Raph, this IMO is an atrocity to Raph and downright cruel. But...what am I, just a fan, not the creator. I really hoped Raph would find himself an inkling of peace in his life; Raph deserves a break. Ok well they all do.

Splinter's death was handled poorly. I felt no emotion, part of the reason because the art was low quality. I can go with Splinter dying, he was ancient, it was inevitable. I believe I wrote a better Splinter death in my fic series.

Leo's story was ho hum...Donnie being all small is corny. I'm more concened with Mikey than anybody. I think he's been framed by that broad.

April's thing...ugh...she's been a totally NORMAL person until now?! That I just don't buy. I'm sorry you don't have this normal character, who somewhat gives the turtles a sense of being normal and accepted by a human (casey too) then go screw her up now she's a freak. More freak than the turtles are!!

I'll agree with you that April's "secret origin" is pretty stupid. The one human character in the whole series is now not even human. Very upsetting.

I have no issues with Splinter's death. It was a long time coming, and quite frankly natural causes is not a bizarre way for an old person (or rat) to die. Not to mention his death has opened up the story for the characters to go about their seperate ways. As we have seen with Raph, Splinter has not been forgotten and his teachings continue on after the grave.

I'm personally a fan of Gameraph. I think he looks cool and could cause some serious damage under the right circumstances.

Now I'm surprised you haven't mentioned Don's shrinking. This is just plain annoying IMHO. I want him back to full size ASAP. Although it is kind of interesting to see him in the Robo-Don suit.

Last time I heard a creator of a widely-adored franchise proclaim he was still going to tell the story FOR HIMSELF, we ended up with Episodes I, II, and III.:sweatdro: Could mean something. I dunno. I too resent that there is hardly any NINJA left in the series. That's the coolest part, IMO.

...

One of these days I'm gonna get together with my writer friends and make a REAL martial arts/sci-fi TMNT series. (Well, as soon as I finish my non-TMNT martial arts/film noir/sci-fi/quantum theory mini-series.) It will have sweet action, beautiful art--reminiscent of noir and japanese prints or brush paintings--and solid writing. You don't got no story, you ain't got no foundation for a good series.

Wow... I have to say that I disagree with quite the majority of your rant. Yes, Laird is doing the comic for himself, yes, the title is still TMNT when they're adults, yes, Splinter is dead... And I'm completely content with that.

Laird wanted to pick up where they left off in Vol. 2. I myself am happy that I at least get a new TMNT comic, being as that I was WAY too young to appreciate the old-school comics (though I now own EVERY-Single- Volume 1 issue!). He is one of the only people in the world to still hold exclusive rights to do what he wishes with his characters. (George Lucas being another.)

"Mutant Turtles" would not be a popular name. First of all, people would think it's a TMNT knock-off and secondly, Peter has already said that he has always liked the way TMNT sounded. He's not going to change it. (It's in the Turtle Tracks at the end of one of the issues.) Also, yes, they're adults, but it also paves the way for the new Tales volume to be made. Thank god, too! I want to know some of the stories in the missing 16 years between Volume 2 and now.

Splinter's death was inevitable. You knew he was going to die sometime, and the turtles are getting to that stage in life where they've never experienced a heart-shattering loss. Every character needs that to evolve. And what, did you expect him to be as old as he is and go out kickin' ass? He died of old age, and I can accept that. His funeral was definately done very tastefully.

Gamera-Raph, Micro-Don, Space Mike all have signifigances. At least it's not Shredder Raph, Cyborg Don, and One-armed Leo! (No, I'm not entirely bashing the Image line, but I do feel that the wounds they suffered were just a tad bit too severe! I do infact like the image series.) I like to see where these characters are going now that they have some not too extreme disabilities to overcome.

April's origin I can live with. Not the direction that I would have taken it, but at least it gives us some back story to the Don One Shot! I'm thankfull for that.

Someone like you complained in one of the issues and I totally agree what Laird said by saying that the only reason you buy the comics is to be a completist. If you don't like the series, stop buying it! Each initial print I believe has a run of about 10,000 copies. My comic store only gets 2 a month... One of Tales and one of TMNT. Make it easier for others to get issues and stop buying them. Laird is not breaking even, and by all means if he wants to make comics in this fashion, let him do it. No one around here has proven that he needs to do any different because he CONTINUES to lose money with the comic EVERY month.

I heavily agree, I love Volume Four and most of what has come from it, I the detractors need to sod off and let people who enjoy new twists embrace this aspect of the franchise, as for the others, they have much better things to do than whine about change. Half of them remind me of Myspace Emos.

Laird bashing is just as popular a bandwagon in much the same way Frank Millers' getting thrashed for "All-Star Batman" when its' ten tiems better written than the current Batman comics.

He's just voicing his opinion. I have read the first 19 issues, it was pretty slow going, but I still enjoyed. I wish that more had been made of Splinter's death. I wish we'd see what happened to that bit of Splinter's hair Donnie took. I wish the Foot's story would be more of a forefront thing. With all this I would still read the TMNT comic, but I can't find it here...I think there are some hit and missed with Vol 4...Not a big fan of Gamera Raph. Don't care for Nobody O'Neil-Jones. I miss the 4 guys working together to face a comon foe. Volume 4 is TMNT and that's good enough for me, but there's still some of Pete's ideas that make me a little flustered.

Well, there will always be aspects of a story that will upset you or wouldn't be what you would do. However, I think it unfair to label anyone who complains about the story a 'completist' when something you don't care for happens in a book or a movie, you don't instantly throw the book down or walk out of the theatre, do you?

This is Ninja Turtles, folks! Most people here have been fans since childhood. When your friend since childhood does something stupid and/or disagreeable to you, you don't instantly tell them off and end a decades-long relationship, do you?

No! You keep reading, keep watching, stand by them and hope things get better.

That being said . . . . . god I hate the art. Being an artist myself, I'm usually quite forgiving about different styles and that. In the series you can't tell April from Shadow from any other person with short hair until someone says thier name. Lawson's good at drawing lumpy aliens and dinosaurian-type monsters, but that's about it. Believe it or not, there are places for a soft curve in artwork.

I dont get why everyone is so hung up about the art. in my opinion its fantastic. i said it in another thread people can draw a good turtle and good figures, but most people dont know ANYTHING when it comes to buildings, and vehicles, and mechanics.. all of his characters look more or less anatomically correct. and yes people look different... i guess if i could see what people mean by all his characters look the same, as well as show me examples of what they think would look better. i could make a better comment to it. I mean. the vampire issue for example. i could tell apart each vamp. i mean. the vamps looked NOTHING like casey, and to be fair.. most artists. when they draw. everything looks the same. as far as people and stuff. even when they think people look different. i think the biggest thing that the tmnt comic has going against for everyone looking the same is that its only a black and white comic. you can only do so much as far as trying to make people look different.

I found Archie to be far superior to the newer volume.
Same here. Archie series is definitely better than Mirage Vol. 4!

And I agree with a lot of what major pain was ranting about. Though I do like some of the stories, April's "secret origin" was probably the dumbest thing to happen in the series. I can understand Splinter's death. He was already pretty elderly in '84. The new series is more towards today, so I could've seen him passing on within those twenty years. I actually would've been a little disappointed if he didn't pass anytime later than that.

I like the individual stories, but I'm hating how it takes two months to come up with a single issue, especially when you have Jim Lawson as your penciler. He isn't even putting his all into his work. Look at "Return to New York" and "City at War", that art was fantastic. Now I'm looking at his current work... with that much effort, he should be able to go through an entire issue within one day. It's almost like he's just drawing one step above stick figures.

The dialogue is getting a little lame. These guys have seen some pretty horrific stuff, gone through rough times... and still manage to say "Well flippity do dah, let's get this FLIPPIN' thing on the road". The dialogue is just... I dunno.... cartoony, when they're in such a dark environment. And I've seen more action watching grannys celebrate a win at Bingo Night than I've seen in this entire series. We see the "ninja" aspect of the Mutant NINJA Turtles once every 8 issues. It's really slow-paced.

Let's just say I'm thankful for Tales.

People hate Splinters' death and Aprils' non human origins because they fear change or the concept that because the first human the Turtles encountered is'nt that at all means the franchise is a joke.

Hardly true.

Its' original, it develops something new, April was going NOWHERE at that point, nowhere, no character, no real purpose, nothing, she was essentially what she described herself to be. Nobody. The cartoons, both of them, were at the least providing her with an edge where as she was just developing romantic feelings with Casey and adopting, whoop de doo, that does'nt intriuge a lot of people

Would you prefer a comic that goes nowhere, or a comic that has the balls to try something different and f*ck a character up at the risk of displeasuring, or pleasuring people? Death of Superman divided fans, some thought it was Dan Jurgens'' best work, others did'nt want to waste money on a blatantly obvious cheap marketing ploy. A minority portion of people fell in love with Ben Reily, whilst a majority of Spidy fans resented him.

Newsflash, people make changes to increase and expand their universe, April not being human opens up new arcs on what possibly happened to the other Aprils, arcs open up new characters, new storylines, people, rather than give that possibility as a chance, just jump to the "great and all conquering" Tales of TMNT

Read Tales all you want, as far as I can tell, Aprils' story intrigues me as a TMNT fan, and this stupid b*ching over art and story holds no logical or reasonabal ground other than the fact its' a bandwagon grudge against Laird for sticking his political opinions down your throats and being rude to people who are intially rude themselves with their criticism. Other comic editors take rude letters with grace and civility because they have a higher brass to answer to, Pete has the balls to respond in kind when someone make a rude comment, and they can't take it, hence the bandwagon.

But being rude to the customer can also turn away many people, in the comic business you have one chance to make a lasting impression, if you act how your customers does then you will lose business.

Just because the customer is giving critasism and not agreeing with how the current book is going does'nt mean Laird has to be also. A small business owner knows that he must be respectful to every one that comes through his door, what Laird is doing is poor business practice which in the end can turn away people causing the book to fail weather its popular or not.

Saying "if you don't like it don't buy it" isn't a valid arguementative point. You've already given other points so it's best just to leave that out of there.

I agree that vol 4 is somewhat slow paced and radically different from what TMNT has usually been about. I still read it and enjoy it, but it could be better.

I understand that Peter must be extremely busy, so the shipping delays are no problem to me, I'm very patient, though I can understand why this would cause readers to become weary of the title.

TMNT will live on for as long as the fans want it to. In that respect don't be upset that you're not getting the most perfect comic book adaption of all time. We have a lifetime to look forward to other Turtle projects.

Archie Turtles was mixed, it had its amazing points and some completely garbage issues. That's for another thread though.

I refuse to buy anything he does, I've seen him posting on newsarama and some other places and his comments are just idiotic, how does he get away with it?

Thats because DC comics is owned by AOL Time Warner, which we all know, its a souless corprate machine. I won't get into that though.

If you notice that in the first few issues, Laird addressed the problem with people dissing the comic very well. He didn't lose his cool or "lash out" at the "customer." However, as the stupidity kept coming in, he started getting frustrated with it, and he lashed out. It's not that he's a very grumpy old man, it's that he's taking HIS creation in the direction he WANTS to take it, hoping that the fans will like it, and in the end, all he catches on the back end of things is sh*t.

What does he expect? If you give us sh*t, then you're going to get it back. His style goes against a lot of things the original series went by. What crowd is he trying to please, his old ones or the new ones?
