Hi Everyone!

This is my first post here, but I've been around TMNT fandom for quite awhile. I come to you with a very important mission:

To make Peter Laird regret the day he decided to change the spelling of Michaelangelo!

I began my mission with a letter to Peter that was printed in issue #6 of the new comic (using my real name, which is quite similar to the one you see .. but you'll have to read the comic to figure it out). Peter replied that my letter made him seriously consider changing back to the old spelling, but decided to stick with removing the "A" from Michaelangelo.

So now I've decided to form the "Michaelangelo" Defense League! Peter may be a god in the world of the TMNT, but this is something I strongly feel to be wrong. Mikey has always been my favorite Turtle, so I'm gonna fight for him!

Anyways, I've just come here to ask for your support. Please feel free to add something to your signature (you can copy mine if you like). Eventually I want to get T-shirts designed .. which I plan to wear if I'm ever lucky enough to meet Peter in person. :tcool:

Yeah i'm with ya!I like michaelangelo better, i don't mind how it really was meant to be spelled i knew him by that name all this time and i wish they'd keep it like that.

I don't think it is that bad that he decided to change.

I think Peter has the right to change the spelling of the name if he wishes. But I'M gonna still spell it Michaelangelo.

Yea, I agree with Karpo, except I think it is better that they changed it! They were obviously named after the artists and there is no Michaelangelo, that would be like a Jewish Italian type of artist which there weren't very many of back then... Plus, it just seems right since all the other names are Italian, and one would be American...whatever, I am losing track here...

When they noticed the error, the First issue had already been printed, and it was too late to change it. And because it was a success, they decided not to. Well, Noe that the TMNT is having a second coming, New comic and new cartoon, It's the best time to change it.

Jephael
12-15-2002, 11:48 AM
I don't really have a preference. Either way, it's the same character. Infact it may even help signify the differences that will be made between the Californian surf-boy persona they gave him in the old show and the more average laid back persona they'll give him in the new show.

Karpo_007
12-15-2002, 11:49 AM
Well that isn't entirely right, It was spelled that way in Mirage too...

Jephael
12-15-2002, 11:53 AM
I know, but that's the only universe of the TMNT that is being continued in this century while everything else is set in a brand new universe. The Mirage comics are the only place where the change will have been more obvious, while in the new show it will look like they've been spelling his name that way all along.

Karpo_007
12-15-2002, 11:54 AM
Thats true. And thats why now is the best time to change it.

At the risk of sounding rude: Why exactly would anyone care about this? It's the letter "A", get over it. It's an insignifficant change. It's not like he's completely changing his name or making him a transvestite.

He said very clearly it was something that bothered him for a long time. It's his character, and his choice so let him change it. He's not going to change it back, because one person apparently has an affinity for the letter A.

Sorry, but the name Michaelangelo just makes no sense, Michelangelo is the proper way to spell it, and yes it does matter, because it describes the turtle's er nationality, lol...if thats possible...?

I'm not certain if you were refering to me or Karpo, but I'm fine with Laird changing it so that it is spelt correctly. I just have no idea why any fan would be offended by the change. There should be more important things to worry about in life, or in the world of the TMNT.

It seems I have underestimated the number of people who have a similar personal connection to the TMNT as I have. Most people whom I have spoken to about this do agree with me. Is this something that I lose sleep over? Heck no. But I will always stand by the fact that changing the spelling of something after 19 years makes no sense.

I actually find it to be quite similar to if I suddenly decided to change the spelling of my name to Rosemarie. It's completely different and certainly not me. As I personally view "Michelangelo" to not be Mikey.

Duke
12-15-2002, 05:51 PM
After reading this forum i understand both sides. Personally i don't see a problem with changing the name. Yeah, it would be nice to keep it the same, but in his mind its nice to change it. And if he feels it should be changed now is the perfect time. It in no ways does any damage to whom mikey is. It also does no damage to who the turtles are. Its not like they want to make another next mutation tv show. All he wants to do is change the spelling to the way he wanted it to be in the first place. No harm, no foul.

How can it be wrong to not have an A in "Michaelangelo"?

Well said.

Karpo_007
12-16-2002, 12:22 AM
Yeah, I think shes's over reacting. If Laird wants to get the spelling right, He has right to do it, And it doesn't affect the TMNT in anyway.

I don't think it is that bad that he decided to change. At last, this is a sign that Karpo and I don't disagree on everything in the TMNT world.

What is the deal with the spelling of "Michelangelo"? (I'm faithful to the CORRECT spelling of it, thank you very much.) It's just a name. As the official site says, it was a simple typo made before the days of spellchecker, and so he essentially insulted the great Renaissance artist's name by spelling it wrong unintentionally. And to think, he studied art history too...

This isn't meant to be harsh, just my view.

Oh yeah, I haven't been posting in a while for the following reasons:

-schoolwork and studying for finals
-been working on finishing my college application in time
-working on 2 fanfic stories (each of them many chapters long)
-started some slow work on another TMNT project that I will not go into the details about at this time

Don't despair! I'll be back soon...

My gwad you people are nasty...

If he wanted it corrected, why wasn't it done when the cartoon came out?

When the Archie comics appeared?

When Image took over the comic book?

All Rose was doing was bringing up the point. Why change it after millions of fans are more familiar with the "ael" version? If origionally there was a "Fwoot" clan and then suddently it was changed to "Foot" clan, would it be accepted? Or Shredder was changed back to his orgional name of "Grate-Man"?

To me, the "ael" miss-spelled version of the name represents the lightheared and goofy attitude that Michaelangelo has. Now he's just a normaly "Michel" just like anyone else. What a boring ninjeee-name.

all i know is that the "A" sure messed me up in Art History class when I kept writing out of habit "michaelangelo" instead of the proper way and I always got marks taken off for that!!

Anyways when I first saw the name changed I was abit upset, I thought having the "a" and having it spelt wrong made him kinda unique, but I guess yea it's just a small detail I guess

12-16-2002, 02:23 PM
First, Cherubae, please do not confuse being nasty with disagreeing, many people intertwine the two and make mistakes....

Second, He made a typo when he was writing the cartoon so e couldn't really change it or else cofuse the fans out there that actually pay attention to this stuff....Also, there was never an Italian named Michael, so we obviously know he is changing it to be correct....

Third, he should never had made that stupid typo, so then people like you would never have started this stupid and useless bickering...

Funny, I always thought his name was spelled without the A, must be when I figured they were all named after artists I didn't pay much more attention...

Actually They made the Typo back at 84 when the first issue was published. It was too late to change it, and so it stayed. After the Huge success of the comic, They didn't want to change it anymore. They could have done it when the cartoon came out in 87 but because Mirage was a still an ongoing series, I guess they didn't want to have 2 diffrent names.

But now is the second wave of TMNT, a new volume to the comic and a New cartoon Show with New audience. It is the Perfect time to Change it to what it was originally intented.

Tokka-B
12-16-2002, 04:02 PM
I doubt that that was the reason they didn't change it....TMNT WAS NOT A HIT BECAUSE THEY SPELLED MICHELANGELO THE WRONG WAY KARPO!!!

They didn't change it probly because it would just confuse the 1% of fans that care, and you know mirage, they care about everyone...

As for the name change...well i'd like it to be michaelangelo, but if it doesn't it will be fine anyways, no big deal, it's just a letter...they're his turtles, he can and should do whatever he wants with them.

Tokka-B
12-16-2002, 06:30 PM

Some were being nasty. That's why I mentioned it.

Second, He made a typo when he was writing the cartoon

It was written "michaelangelo" back in 1984. That would be before the cartoon. One would think that before a product is mass-marketed, name corrections would be made beforehand, not 15+ years later.

Also, there was never an Italian named Michael, so we obviously know he is changing it to be correct....

http://www.michael-schumacher.it/ :D Italians can have the name of "Michael"

varooooooom

Third, he should never had made that stupid typo, so then people like you would never have started this stupid and useless bickering...

Yes maybe THEY should of. You seem to forget that Kevin was also a part of the creation process.

Although I find it strange that once Kevin sold his half of the Turtle-kingdom to Peter, Peter decided to change the name. Perhaps Kevin didn't want the name changed in the first place? Doesn't matter now, since I doubt Kevin has any say in what goes on anymore.

Cherubae how is the name Michelangelo boring and Michaelangelo not boring? It's not like Laird is going to kill Michaelangelo off so why do you all act like he is...

Ya know, now that I think about it, it does feel like the name change has created a whole new character. At least to me anyway. A "death" to Michaelangelo and then a rebirth of Michelangelo. Guess I'll see how this new infant hold out in the Turtle world.

Well... if you guys are famalir with Roseangelo and Cherubae, they are infamous for starting up little groupies like this for the fun of it.

I thought it was a cute idea too, since I have yet to remember that I should be spelling Mikey's name without an A. But if word of this idea and how it sounds like an attack on Laird's behalf... I'm also a little worried about that. If he can track down people making illegal copies of his copies.. *nervous laugh* :embarass:

So that's the point.. it's just another popularity boost for a cute gimmick. If you don't like it, then don't participate. But please do not start flaming up over this. Only Laird has that right. :twink:

i have to say the only one with any logic in this argument is karpo. the "a" is insignificant, but if i must pick a side i say it should go. the turtles references to their rennesance artists is futile if you spell it wrong it's like spelling shakespeare as shakespeer or even abe lincoln as abe linkin. it should be historically accurate.

the reason they didn't change it in the 80's is because of continuity reasons. granted mirage, archie, and the cartoon were all different worlds it'd get annoying if the had them spelled differently they were in too deep when they realized the error.

these insane fogu people should be happy that they're favorite turtle is being characterized correctly for this new show unlike the old toon, rather than focus on a miniscule name change.

MICHELANGELO is right, deal with it

Well, i dunno. I have some worrisome doubts about that. He is definitely MORE accurate than the old toon Mike...... but im afraid they will be willing to sacrifice some of his character to make a 'comedy scapegoat'. He was described as 'toned-down party guy' and NOT as 'laid-back, fun-loving artist guy'. I really hope that make his character as much like the Mirage Mike as possible......

Karpo_007
12-17-2002, 01:14 PM
I hope so too. Mike seems to be only character that differ noticably from his mirage counterpart.

THANK YOU DONATELLO, That was the point I was trying to make...

Also, they changed his character a little bit because it is a new series, NOT BECAUSE THEY CHANGED HIS NAME!!!!!!!!!! :x

Karpo_007

Of course not. They just need one TMNT to be comical, and Mike happens to be the most suitable for the role. I hope they wont go over board with it.

*begins to count the many times people still spell it as Michaelangelo here*

That's my point. I don't care about how the official changed spelling is right or wrong. It's just that old habits are really hard to break... so many of us use this as an excuse to not break that old habit. :P
