View Full Version : A Continuity Paradox

I was just thinking about something I find odd among Turtle fans. According to polls on this forum, the most popular versions of the Turtles seem to be from the first cartoon. I say "seem to be", as I'm only judging by the polls on everyone's favorite versions of Mike and Raph, both of which are liked most in their old school forms. However, another poll revealed that turtle fans on this forum like their storylines more action-y than lighthearted. One might presume that putting old-school characters into more action-oriented plotlines might be a reasonable comprimise, but the Red Sky turtle series did that, and was not well-received.

So here's an intriguing question: If you were to take various elements from the various Turtle continuities in order to make a totally new one, what would said elements be?

I'm not sure...that's how I met the TMNT through the Old Show...and that Raph is the one that became my favorite. I as an adult like the more action orientned stories, but i also like the comedy of the OT...it's all a matter of what i want in the Turtles...if i want good live action blend of action and comedy: TMNT 1, uter crap TMNT: NT:TNM....:P
EDIT: I think Archie did a good job of making the Old Toon TMNT universe more action and story oriented. if I had to compile all the TMNT into one kind of "Best of" thing, I'd say Archie would be a good template.

For me its the fact that i grew up with the old toon ninja turtles. Even though the comic came first, its still my original TMNT. I have alot of great memories that involved the old toon turtes that will always stay with me. The Archie comic is a favorite of mine as well, I'd have to go with Jester on this one.

It is a tad funny how kids on the street were doing kung fu stances and all the bruce lee yells when they're imitating the TMNT, when in the actual cartoon the turtles hardly ever did anything martial arts related at all... Hell, the movies and videogames had more kick-butt ninja action than the old show...

thats because it all got toned down do too whinny over protective and hypiritical parents.

For I will always love the classic series, it was not so much the action that draws me but the characters and seeing them do lots of interesting things and interact that drew me. The classic cartoon gave that to me. I find cartoons with just plain action a bit boring, that is what turned me off to Dragon Ball Z. I likecit when the turtles got more series, so for me season seven was my ideal vesion of TMNT, it had good plot and more serious stories with out losing the fun and humour that was assiated with the turtles. Now if they had amped that up a bit more than It would have been perfect for me.

The new toon is great and I love it for its action and fighting and jaw dropping storlines. However, and I'm not sure on how to explain my self, I appricaite the turtles caring brotherly chemisrty, but there are times when the intersactions of the turtles and how they are with each other sometimes irks me and gets on my nerves. I can't really explain it...I don't know if any one knows what I'm talking about:-?

Yes, I grew up with the old school turtles. I was born in 85, so naturally, everything old school should appeal to me. Fact of the matter is that it doesn't. I love some of the toys from the toyline, and some of the shows were good, but others were just laughable and very crappy as far as animation and art are concerned.

This new show I haven't really had anything to complain about. I've become aquainted with the comics, and I'm starting to love where the comics come from and where the new show is going. It's what appeals to me most... The turtles are more badass looking, and that's what I love about them. They actually look like they can believably kick some ass and take names.

It's just all about opinions. I will always collect the old-school eps and figures for nostalgic reasons, but this new show... the new look, the new 'tude, new everything just appeals to me more as a fan. It suits my needs.

I like the old show best overall. The new show has good animation, voice-acting, and lotsa action, but it lacks charm and that distinct personality the old toon had. The Shredder's new incarnation is too badass to take too seriously, for instance. I think the new show's creators (Laird in particular) are too focused on making the new cartoon "dark, serious, edgy, cool" and as a result they lost what made the show so lovable in the first place.

If I could combine the continuities, I would keep old Shredder's look with the new turtles' look, and find some pleasant balance between the two shows.

I think you guys don't get the question the original poster asked.

As for me, I'd take the action of the new series, the stories of the comics, and the characters of the Archie series. Combine them, and you have one sweet TMNT universe.

-The action and story type of Mirage(Vol.1).
-Characters/character designs from Archie comics.

I would mix the Stories from all the series (Mirage,Archie,Image,Red Sky,New Show)
Style I'd go with New Show, Red Sky or Archie
Voices I'd use voice actors from Both the old and new show
Splinter: Old, Shredder:New, Mike:new, Don:old, Raph:New,Leo :old
I'd bring mutants back into the show I know it's hated by allot but I miss the non generic mutants that we have in the old show.
I don't see why they can't use Archie Stories at all or even thing from the old show...
if turtle ever come back in the future again after this show goes I would like to see them take from archie...I still dont see why they can't there is nothing wrong with that series at all and oddly enough most fans of the tmnt will admit together its one of the best series.

Putrescent...your idea for a "mix" would be.....like a half and half pizza (quite fitting, if you ask me)

So, would Splinter be "originally a rat" or "originally human"? (I prefer "originally human", myself) And would Shredder be a ninja master or an alien in an exo-skeleton?

I haven't seen much of the new show, but I don't see anything wrong with "mixing" ideas.

I would go with Old Splinter Voice his new look and human first it makes you feel sorry for him a rat being mutated is a good thing in my opinion thats why I always liked him being a man first.

Shredder would have the red sky later season or archie look maybe a bit sharper looking I would have his new voice and keep him as a buisnessman as well it would help make people hate the tmnt in the city if saki told them about them......I would have him be human but have his shredder outfit make him taller and be like a form fitting exo-outfit

I also would have made Krang work in the show as Shredder keeping him around helping him out they both being so evil and and krang suplying shredder with all of his utrom technology.....we could still have the utrom story line but instead of shredder being killed by them it could have been krang so then we could have had the tmnt finish off shredder and give them the honor of killing the person who has ruined there masters life....
and the utroms destroying the one who ruined theres and so many of there fellow alien races....

I would still keep the 2 mutants out of the show but I have to say we do need some mutants in the show because the show just seems to be lacking to me without interesting mutants who are bad.

I'd keep the baxter story line the way it is....I like him in the new show...
best thing they've done on the show so far to me

keep Karai the way she is to....great shes done perfectly

I would also have a mixture of human and robot foot soldiers just like how the new show was going....

I would also like to bring in some characters from other comic books....and do the cross overs that the tmnt have done in the comics....

I've seen almost all of the new show and I don't see anything wrong with mixing things either...I really want Laird to bring The Future Shark Story into the series.....I don't know what it is but I love the future archie tmnt and Armagon and Verminator-X

There are more things I'd do but I'm working on a huge list and writting laird a big old wonderfull letter so you'll have to wait hehe unless you just what i'd do with each character and I'd answere :)

It's hard for me to take Shredder as seriously (er...you know what I mean) with that overly-sinister voice he has in the new series, not to mention his being a businessman took away from his ninja roots. Plus his outfit was cooler in the old show. :D

I have to dissagree I like his new voice best it suites shredder uncle phil was to whiney....the old outfit was ok but I like the old mirage look best.
I don't think him being a buisnessman takes anything away from him being a ninja I am sure many ninja have secrete lives.....and in fact it was like this in the mirage comic was it not?

I believe so. But I like seeing the ninja aspect, and even when he was prancing around as a ninja you never quite GOT the ninja-feel from him, especially when you looked at his lackeys hanging around him. He was so stacked with armor, and now that we know he was really an Utrom all along, it seems even more unnecessary.

But that's just my opinion.

ah see I like both but as a human he was never a utrom in the comics and it was fine that way to be honest....I think they mixed the two characters together (shredder and krang) so people wouldn't get to upset about not having an evil brain/utrom/alien creature....
to be honest yes the shredder on the comics was lame but its because they never really got into the character.....it would make a great tales of tmnt issue to give us more of a back story on shredder....I honestly can't believe no one has even mentioned that yet....
I do love the old toon shredder btw don't get me wrong but I like him in the later seasons when it was on cbs and not fox the one....the archie shredder was pretty much the same....
The cbs show honestly was really great I looked forward to it just as much if not more then I do catching the new show every week :)

In the pilot James Avery did an awesome Shredder. I really liked him. I think Shredder as a buisnesman works, think about Xanatos...he was a buisnessman, and he still had his nefarious schemes and fighting prowless...why not Saki.
I love having an Evil Utrom as Krang, In fact in figure play, Shredder does team with Krang, and evil Utrom...but Shredder might still be one...especially if they make a Utrom Shredder figure....(please Playmates)....I like your addition of Archie Story lines and characters, but why keep Bebop and Rocksteady out. JUst make them more...well...punkish and less comic relief.

I like the idea of krang as an evil utrom but I honestly dont like shredder as if and I dont care what anyone says they did mix the two characters together to make old school fans happy...and honestly the idea came back and gave them an old ninja kick to the face cause it made more people angry then anything lol me I don't like it but I'm here for the ride just like I have been with every other tmnt adventure....I don't really read any other comics and dont much care for other heros besides in movies....
Trust me I miss bebop and rocksteady to but I honestly think the show would get really repetative and boring because the villians would get boring and just send those lackys to do there job....and would you really want to see them get killed or punished or just disapear like so many who have failed before have I sure wouldn't The worst thing the old toon ever did to us fans was have those two just up and disapear to be honest I didn't like how they where I mean they even helped the turtles at times....I don't know I just always saw them turning over a new leaf like they did in the archie comics....
or hell even turning them back to humans....
I also love the redsky stories probably more then just about anyone but I think they went the wrong way they should have made the show more like the archie comics....don't get me wrong I'm even a person who likes Dregg and Mung lol I mean hell the guy captured shredder and krang and had them on the run!
I must agree though playmates is really behind and should have made a utrom shredder by now...because they would realy cash in on that kids and fans alike want things they see on the show...when will toy companies ever learn.

You know what of bugs me about the new toon. I mentioned above that sometimes the turtles interactions with each other annoy me, well I was just watching some old episodes from the new series and i figured out what bugs me so much. I notice that there are times when the boys (particularly Raph and Mike) are not getting along with each other and are fighting and then in like the next scene the act like nothing was going on and they seem cool.

Like Raphael can spend half an episode smacking Michaelangelo around or mikey could be irratating Raphael and generally just not getting along with each other 9or trying to do each other serious harm), than for no reason they are cool and acting all buddy, buddy again:ohwell: :|

I don't know, maybe I just don't get brotherly interactions and this normal behavior, but it usaully warrents a WTF reaction out of me:-?

That's pretty normal brotherly behavior. My brother and I are like that all the time.
