NOW PERSONALLY I DONT LIKE THEM YET. DONT LIKE THE SKIN TEXTURE, DONT LIKE THE EYES (TOO FAR APART AND TOO SNAKE LIKE). SO FAR ITS LOOKING LIKE THE ONLY CGI IVE SEEN LIKE THIS....CORNY CGI. I CAN IMAGINE THE MOVEMENT LOOKING STUPID ALREADY. THEY HAVE ALOT OF WORK TO DO. PERSONALLY I WOULDN'T HAVE RELEASED THESE PICS IF THEY DIDN'T LOOK ANYTHING LIKE THE FINAL PRODUCT. OR MAYBE THIS IS THE FINAL PRODUCT......iLL!
ANYONE KNOW WHAT IMAGI HAS DONE BEFORE?

I've been supporting all the pics so far but the high res version of this poster looks just painfully bad. Amateur-level bad.

No Shredder, worst CGI ever...
...Yeah, this will draw, big bucks people, big bucks.
THIS against Transformers?:dead:
The script will be likly solid, but Cubix has better CGI than this
Let's not forget that there is long time left until release, so I still hope they will look better in the final version ;)

cheeks are too flat, eyes too far apart. I can go with the wide wrists and ankles cause turtles are like that..but they look funny. The skin coloring is amatureish, it looks like it was done in photoshop.
I wish Dreamworks or Pixar would've taken on TMNT...they'd be so much better.

Excuse my French but that looks like utter **** and if I saw that in theater I wouldn't want to see the movie. Espcially if I wasn't a big TMNT fan
Strange thing is that on the site (http://www.imagi.com.hk/movie/web/tmntm.htm), their shadows look way better.
Especially on the Cast&Crew page, the turtle on the left should be Leo. Compare to the poster. The eyes are totally different and differently placed and the cheeks are not flat.

Again, I must complain about the lower jaw/the lack thereof. How on earth are they gonna make the Turtles talk without the bottom half of their faces looking like rubber? I mean, even the '80s turtles had more of a chin than that. And I echo the complaints of the others... Look at those "cheeks." Why are they all pointy and stick out funny like that? And they have really flat heads, too...
:dead: All I can say is... this better show some signs of having 1) an awesome story and 2)good animation to override the poor design... otherwise I may just wait to get it at the library. Or even blow it off completely.

After all the awful movies that movie companies have dared to distribute lately I would have imagined that a lot of companies would have taken the new TMNT movie idea more seriusly or even fought for it, I can't belive that that's the only company ( with basically no curriculum) that would take the TMNT idea , having all the fandom that they have and being somewhat of a pop culture icon they should have a good and well deserved come back....I really hope that at least PL makes an effort to make this happen specially after the flops of TMNT III but we can only hope I guess .....

Are you guys sure there wasn't some kind of mixup and this is a Direct-to-DVD movie rather than a big-budget theatrical release?
Because this looks pathetic. Ab-so-lute-ly pathetic. It's as if they're trying to make it look bad. I'd rather see this project get cancelled than turn the TMNT into a laughing stock.

YOU KNOW IVE CONSIDERED THE FACT THAT THIS IS ONE OF THESE MOVIES THAT ARE SLATED TO BE RELEASED IN THEATERS BUT ULTIMATELY GETS PUT STRAIGHT TO DVD. AND YOUR RIGHT Mecha Cow, I'D RATHER SEE IT CANCELED THEN STRAIGHT TO DVD.
OK LETS JUST GIVE IT A CHANCE THOUGH. THEY HAVE MORE THEN A YEAR TO PROVE THEMSELVES. BUT ITS JUST THAT HOLLYWOOD DOESN'T FUNCTION LIKE IMAGI IS AT SUCH AN EARLY STAGE. I MEAN WE DONT SEE COLUMBIA PICTURES RELEASING HALF ASS PICTURES OF VENOM BEFORE SPIDERMAN 3 COMES OUT. WHEN THEY DO HE'LL BE COMPLETE AND A LIKENESS OF WHAT WE WILL EXPECT ON OPENING DAY. WHICH IS WHAT SCARES ABOUT THIS MOVIE (TMNT). IF THIS IS AN EARLY DRAFT, THEN WHY RELEASE SUCH A STUPID LOOKING IMAGE SO EARLY, I MEAN WE ARENT THAT DESPERATE, ARE WE? AND IF THIS IS THE FINAL PRODUCT THEN WE ARE ****ED.

THE HIGHLANDER SOUNDS STUPID.
Well that Highlander one is being done by Kevin Eastman so I wouldn't call it stupid just yet.
As for the poster. The eyes are just wrong... Leo shouldn't have orange eyes....he should have just all black eyes.
The Geiko gecko has better CGI then this.

Heck, I like the models from the CGI show pilot better than this stuff. While Splinter seriously needed some work, at least the Turtles were strongly reminiscient of the way their costumes looked in the movies. And the animation was somewhat nice... Just take the textures, rendering, and animation quality up to feature-film level and that would be cool! (or at least cooler...)
...Oh no... what do you guys think they've done to Splinter for this movie?! :teek:

The best thing to do is take this with a grain of salt. Don't believe anything just yet. Until something appears on the official movie site, or better yet, the official TMNT site, I'm not to believe it's the actual art, etc. as the poster depicts. IMAGI may have done major adjustments, or are going to do so. They still have a little over a year to go besides. Have faith in Laird, and them. :)

THATS A GOOD POINT, NOW THAT YOU THINK ABOUT IT. I REALLY ENJOYED THAT TRAILER THEY HAD FOR THE CGI TURTLES. I HAVE IT DOWNLOADED. I WATCH IT EVERY NOW AND THEN, AND YOU ARE RIGHT, ITS PRETTY GOOD. I REMEMBER BEING SO EXCITED WHEN I 1ST SAW IT.

Damn.. what's with the negativity?
I actually like the poster... True, its not the best one.. I have the teaser one with Leo in a dark alley holding his katana as my desktop wallpaper.
Anyways... I don't like the eye color or their cheeks. However, I the way it looks overall... It just need little polishing, like with the skin color.. it needs to be more scaly, not smooth. And i think the picture quality itself shoudl be slightly gritty. Leo looks menacing.. his posture, his sword.. his expression (if only he had different color eyes), which i like. And I actually like the Lens Flare, Luckoff. Who cares that nobody else in Hollywood uses it?
Seriously, guys... We have two years to go before the movie is released. Laird CARES about his turtles... he wouldn't just give them to people if he knew they would make an half-assed effort.
I think we can be assured that the movie will have a good story... a while ago, somebody posted an interview with the director who assured us that he would stick to continuity and make sure the movie followed the source material.
Anyways... you guys are way too negative... do we even know if this is even an offical poster?

Hopefully the plot/storyline will be good, I can forgive the look of the characters if there is a solid story there that grabs me and doesnt insult my intelligence. But seeing as im fully into the new cartoon show I would prefer them to look somewhat like their cartoon counterparts, or at least come up with a happy medium between how they look now and how they looked in the old toon and comics. Looking at that poster I agree what everyone else has said so far. The skin doesnt bother me that much but the eyes need to be rectified... Id prefer the white eyes. They are spaced too far apart and the head looks like its been squashed. There is too much cheek bulge in them. Again i guess i am biased to the new cartoon look...but geez...that doesnt look like a turtle..it looks like a frog, or a salamander or something.
They still have time to get it right...heres hoping.

Exactly. To both of you.
I mean, come on people! Just be happy we're getting a new movie!! Years ago, this wasn't a reality, and all we can do to be thankful is berate the choices they made on it? It's a serious killjoy to the excitement of it all.

If you guys are so shallow as to not go see something that you love, like this, because it doesn't look pretty? Then you're not true fans. Just be happy we GET a movie.
I will certainly not go and see a movie I don't like, simply because of the fandom. In cases like that, when it gets that extreme, I tend to turn away from fandom and live my own life, with my personal fandom. I don't give a damn about being a true fan or some fandom laws. I don't really apreciate statements like these to begin with. Sure, a movie is a neat thing, but if it's going to be some crappy CGI-atrocity, I won't go and see it. I'll get it on DVD one day... maybe. But I don't feel like I owe the TMNT or the fans anything.

THE REASON WHY IT MATTERS THAT HOLLYWOOD DOESN'T USE LENS FLARE IS BECAUSE LEN FLARE LOOKS CORNEY. ITS TAKE AWAY FROM THE REALISTIC LOOK OF THE POSTER. AND THAT IS WHAT THE POSTER IS TRYING TO PULL OFF. YOU WILL NEVER SEE A SPIDERMAN OR AN X-MEN POSTER WITH CORNEY LENS FLARE LIKE THAT. THE MAJORITY AGREES THAT LENS FLARE LIKE THAT IS CORNEY. YOU LEARN LENS FLARE WHEN YOU 1ST USE PHOTOSHOP AND AS YOU PROGRESS YOU LEARN BETTERS WAY TO REFLECT LIGHT THAT DOESN'T LOOK SO CORNEY. THEY LOOK LIKE ARMATURES, THE ONES WHO DESIGNED THE TMNT POSTER.
OH, YES!!!! HOTT!!!!!!!!

REMEMBER, EVERYTHING METAL AND SHINNY HAS A EXTREMELY BRIGHT LIGHT, RIGHT IN FRONT OF IT.........LOL,PLEASE.
WE ONLY HAVE ONE YEAR, NOT TWO.
YES THE STORY MAYBE GOOD, BUT WHAT IS A GOOD STORY WITH OUT GOOD VISUALS? THATS THE POINT OF THE MOVIE, FOR GODS SAKE. IF VISUALS WERNT IMPORTANT IN THIS CASE THEN I'D RATHER GET THE STORY IN COMIC BOOK FORM, OR HAVE MY MOTHER READ IT TO ME FOR BED TIME....... PLEASE.
WHEN IS IT ALRIGHT TO BE NEGATIVE? AND KEEP IN MIND I'M MOSTLY NOT A NEGATIVE PERSON, BUT ITS OVERWHELMINGLY OBVIOUS THAT THIS POSTER IS CRAPPY. WHEN ARE WE ALLOWED TO CRITICIZE????????
Exactly. To both of you.

SO YOU WOULD ACCEPT ANY CRAP THROWN AT YOU, JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE A FAN?????? LOL, THATS FUNNY. I'M NOT GONNA BE HAPPY, JUST BECAUSE I'M GETTING A NEW MOVIE. WE ARE IN THE AGE OF CG AND THIS IS WHAT OUR BELOVED TMNT'S GET??????? I SPEND ALOT OF MY HARD EARNED MONEY AND TIME ON MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS, BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN I SHOULD ACCEPT ANYTHING I GET WHEN THE POTENTIAL IS ENDLESS. I MEAN WOULD YOU HAVE BEEN HAPPY WITH A MOVIE THAT USED THE NEXT MUTATION COSTUMES RATHER THEN THE ONES THEY USED IN THE 90'S, NOW KNOWING HOW WELL THE 1ST MOVIE DID?
YOUR LOGIC IS "ILK!". BECAUSE YOU HAVE EXTREMELY LOW STANDARDS DOESN'T MEAN YOU ARE A BETTER FAN, OR BECAUSE I HAVE HIGH STANDARDS MAKE ME A FAKE FAN. iLL.

I empathize with both sides on this... I would undoubtedly go see it no matter what because I am soooooo happy we are getting this at all. I also understand and mostly from being in an animation/film dept. at my university for four years that the look will kill a movie no matter what the script is like with very few exceptions. It would kill me to hear all my teachers and peers rip this movie apart simply on looks. It would become another CGI joke, popular with fans but widely laughed at.
The bodies I may be able to live with. Limbs with musculature inside them take a long time and are ridiculously complicated to create even by the most well seasoned modeler. I see why they made the limbs the way they did with thickness instead of precise muscle.
I really hope that they push the faces in and create a jaw of somesort I don't see how they are going to succesful shape a mouth that way. They should have modeled using reference from highquality figurines or even from the original costumes. It is very true that a movie poster this early is just a prototype and under all the rendering there is skelington of little polys and nurbs waiting to be moded...subdivide and conquer people  (I gave 3D up for the most part so for all those who know far more about Maya then me, feel free to laugh at the references I don't have in correct context)
Laird does care and I believe his is hovering over that studio as much as he can. I am still looking forward to this movie :D

The one positive thing that stands out about this poster is the cranial structure of Leo and how it closely reflects that of his head in the first-ever Mirage comic. But like others said, the eyes are too far apart, the colors are kind of.... I dunno... bad. The texture looks okay. I think there's a lot of room for improvement, though. There's still a little over a year left for this to work. Hopefully, the designers can utilize that time in reconstructing the model of their turtles.

Damn.. what's with the negativity? It's just... I don't see this as a very animatable (is that a word? :dead: ) design, which worries me. And it's all pointy, with weird eyes and stuff. I agree with you on the whole "If it's a good story I can look past it" idea... but the best thing would, of course, be something where my jaw is hitting the floor every step of the way. Something where I go  through every second of the movie.
It may turn out differently. Maybe they will miraculously find a way to look their mouth move properly the way it's designed. Maybe that's only a concept design. Perhaps the story and animation will blow us away so we don't care about the looks of the TMNT's heads. I don't know. All I'm saying is looking at that image (which isn't even new to a lot of us), I don't really like the design.
So while I rant and complain, I am giving the other aspects of the movie (and even the possibility that this isn't the final design) a chance. I'm not trying to be so negative as to drag others down. I'm just callin' it as I see it.
EDIT:

Thick wrists and ankles not only make them look sturdier, but they also are faithful to their early Mirage incarnations. I like it. I hope we do get to see a little bit of musculature though. That'd be way awesome.
And again with the head design. That little "barely there" jaw/chin... I keep having visions of bad CG kids shows when I try to think of that moving with speech. I think if there was only one thing I could fix about this picture, it would be that. The rest just conflicts with my personal tastes, which isn't so bad.
Oh, and the lens flare? Yeah, like LUCKFF said... They're not used in Hollywood because any idiot can open Photoshop and slap down a lens flare. There's a time and place to use them... and you never use it this way. It does look really corny.

Negativity and constructive criticsm are two different things. The call on the style needs to be said to make something better. Design is extrememly important, I am thinking maybe just maybe for the sake of getting something out to show this time the movie really is getting off its feet they threw whatever models they had in the backgrounds. Those may have been three models ago for all we know. If it's not then there is nothing wrong with pointing out the style is a little undesirable. Heck if I didn't get my butt kicked a little I would never get a good movie or character out.

Has it occured to anyone that this may be the only imagery out there (which no doubt are months old) these places have available to them, and so they are slapping them up on their sites in poster sizes? As was stated, Photoshop can easily manip these things into what we see that has sparked such a debate. Grain of salt, people, grain of salt.

*sigh*:( I hope this isn't their final version. First, I think the design is snake-like, as LUCKFF said... And even with a lackluster design, the least they could do is give them some texture. The skin looks rubbery smooth in that cheap computer way.
I'm glad they didn't just do a translation of the live-action movie turtles(which I'm not terribly fond of, due to their creepiness/vague semblence to turtles) Why couldn't these guys just study turtles and get some inspiration? Come up with a new, but good design? Instead of generic reptile head, why don't they just go for turtle-based heads... I mean as far as eye-spacing and snouts go? The cheeks are way too... sharp. So exaggerated, they don't even look like turtles. More like dinosaurs, if you ask me.
Let's face it, guys. TMNT is an old franchise. Talented, creative people would rather work with franchises that aren't ancient and haven't been dragged through the mud. Unfortunately, while Superman and Batman are classic, being from their "good ole days" era, TMNT is from the 80's. Much as we may be attached to such gems... much of the older generations hate the decade (by older, I mean baby boomer and slightly younger). At least, that is the impression I have gotten from teachers. So we shouldn't be surprised if this movie stinks to high heaven. I'm still bothered by who they have gotten to direct the film -- take a look at Mr. Munroe's resume. And pray he's creative genius waiting to happen.:(
The only thing I like about the design? They gave Leo red eyes. I remember, when googling pictures of pond turtles, one species whose males had red-yellow eyes. Very cool, IMO. Gives them that scary freak/animal look.
Doesn't mean I like the eye structure/design. They look like pokemon eyes, IMO. But eye color? Yes. Finally, something other than the generic brown/black shtick a lot of versions have. I hope maybe they'll add some flecks of other colors, if it so happens this ain't the final design.
But other than that, I am not at all enthused by these dinosaurs. Hoping for major improvement. Although I doubt we will see any. TMNT is too old a franchise to get any serious treatment (and as far as I know, there are no creative powerhouses who are really enthusiastic about TMNT. I envy transformers. They have Spielberg in their vast arsenal...)
I'm just going to sit back and wait
Exactly what I'm going to be doing
Look, it doesn't matter if the TMNT look weird or not, this is a very early teaser, probably with not all of the kinks worked out of it yet. In a few months time, another poster will most likely be released, so it's possible that the TMNT designs will be changed at least slightly by then
So kick back. Relax. And don't complain about it until we know what the TMNT will look like in the final form *sips coke before going hyper*

No. I must eliminate my expectations. That way, I won't care if it stinks, and if it rocks, I'll be able to enjoy it all the more.:)
However, I stand by my opinion that, IN ITS CURRENT STATE, the designs still need work.
EDIT: Hey... just noticed something kind of... uplifting. This doesn't seem to be an official or even preliminary movie poster -- note the words at the bottom of the pic: "For licensing opportunities, contact 4kids entertainment." I take it then, that this was just a teaser for interested INVESTORS. (That's why they didn't waste their money on heavy-duty graphics. That's why the turtles have that photoshopped skin and confounded lens flare.)

Luckoff... let's just agree to disagree, alright? I don't see anything wrong with the lens flare... I think its a nice touch myself.. *shrugs*
I have been looking at the poster for a while, and I have to say, the eye color are starting to grow on me. They make Leo look intimidating... However, I do not understand what people mean by saying that the eyes are too far apart? They seem fine to me.. *shrugs* How close are they supposed to be?
I don't like the skin texture.. its too smooth. It needs to be more rough, more scaly. The colors are "meh".. could use more variation in skin tone.
I will say that i am going to wait before making my final judgement, and that I have faith in Laird to ensure that the movie will be successful, and I think you guys hsould too. Laird wouldn't just let the franchise crash with a bad movie.
And I think we might be jumping slightly to conclusions. We know NOTHING about the way that the turtles will move from this poster. We need clips or trailers to be able to accurate judge the CGI animation and whether teh jaw structure for speaking are alright. Maybe it's the poster itself that makes the skin look bad, and it will look better when we see some actual clips? Just a thought...
I understand you guys want the movie to be as good, and constructive cricitism is good, but I just feel like you're completely bashing it before you guys really know anything.. *shrugs*

*shrugs*
YOU'RE RIGHT ABOUT LAIRD IceRash78. I FEEL BETTER THAT HE'S LOOKING OVER THE PROJECT. LETS JUST HOPE HE HAS ENOUGH CREATIVE POWER TO CHANGE WHAT WE HAVE SEEN SO FAR. AS FAR AS THE BASHING, I AND EVERYONE ELSE WAS BASHING THAT STUPID POSTER. WE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT CAN HAPPEN. WE WEREN'T BASHING WHAT WE DIDN'T KNOW. ALOT OF US INCLUDING MY SELF WERE USING THE WORDS "IF IT ENDS UP LIKE THIS, IT SUCKS" ETC...NOBODY HAS MADE FINAL JUDGMENT YET.

This movie really isn't impressing me here. When I saw the CGI TMNT preview I was angered by it. I hate CGI stuff. I always have and always will. I don't mind it's use in film but I hate it when the whole movie is CGI. Like Ice Age and all those lame kids shows/movies. -_- That's just me and in my opinion the turtles*Or Leo atleast* Looks horrible. Their heads are shaped weird and they look like a cut scene from a PS2 game.

I want to see what everyone has to say in 2007 after it's out. MY biggest wonder is this, WILL TMNT have a fair chance in the Box Office? Mostly likely TMNT may be released with SpiderMan 3. Who will win? Most likely Spiderman 3. I love TMNt, but if they decide to release it and the peopleat Hollywod say, release Spiderman the same Friday as TMNT, kids, adults, etc will most likely rush to see SM3 FIRST. Unless they do that double feature for both of them....highly unlikely though.
BTW...truely Leo has some KILLER eyes there.

Hopefully the early pics they released were just test pics, the movie is still a long way off so most likley the finished product will look better. But like I said before, the writting should be the most important thing, and that I'm confidant will be good.

You have to remember that by the time they did those "test pics" they had started preproduction of the movie. Sad, but true. Now, unless in some whim of a thought they decided to pass around a new idea for the look of the turtles, that's what we're getting. I think that we need to see an updated version and fast.
However, I'm not going to complain about it too much... it's a new movie. Whether it gets pumped DTV, I personally don't care. But if WB is pushing the movie, there's no way in hell it'll go DTV... They released Looney Toons Back in Action, didn't they?

Why Did They Have To Go Cgi With The Turtles Man????!!!!!!!!??????????
Name Me One Good Action, Serious (not The Incredibles) Cgi Movie Ever Released (that Looked Good In Action). I Dont Know Man, Why Couldn't We Get A Live Action. With Todays Movies They Could Have Done A Crazy Movie. Ive Seen Action Cgi, And Everything Ive Seen Looks Stupid. Who Even Knows If Even Pixar Can Pull Off A Good Action Movie.
Then Again, Theres That New Final Fantasy Movie. Omg. Thats Incredible. I'm Pretty Sure Thats Not What Imagi Is Working With. And If I'm Not Correct That Final Fantasy Movie Was Done In Japan, And Japan Blows America Away!!!!!!!!
I Think The Live Action Could Have Been A Sure Bet. A Gamble Is Being Taken With Cgi. Even Worse They Get A Company That Has Done Nothing, To Do The Cgi And A Director Who Has Done What!!!!!!!!!!???????????????? We Couldn't Even Get A Real Director????????????????????????
I Ask My Self? With The "billion" Tmnt Has Earned Couldn't We Have Been In An Ideal Situation????????????

CGI is not the problem. The problem is that, nowadays, more and more companies are using CGI as a cheap shortcut instead of as a high-quality animation tool. This could be a great action movie. But the director and company who are making this picture have nothing. You are right. The signs all say that this is ultimately going to stink.
As I said earlier, TMNT -- successful as it is -- is, creatively, a worn out franchise. Doesn't mean there's not plenty of material to work with... it just means that talented people (directors, animators, companies, investors, etc.) are in fact tired of old subject matter. They prefer new things if they can help it. I also said that many adults in that business, especially those with seniority, were not as big fans of the 80's as some of the people here. In fact, to many of the people I knew, the 80's is the decade they hated most (probably because they're tired of it being overly-glorified by dysfunctional whippersnapper homage bands...)
In my mind, the best time to do a good-quality TMNT animated movie would be a few decades from now. Lots of people still find TMNT generally annoying, simply because it was so popular and basically dominated the world at one time (kind of like Pokemon).
My one hope. My one prayer. Is that TMNT will be surprisingly good -- kind of like how New Line had been making tons of junk movies, took a huge risk with director Peter Jackson (who's credits included a muppet porn movie) to make this billion dollar epic. No one thought LOTR would succeed like it did. Maybe Imagi will have its big breakthrough with this movie. Maybe Kevin Munroe will finally unleash his great potential in this movie...
Or maybe not. Expect Nothing. Be Ready For Anything.

Yeah... CGI definitely isn't the problem. The Turtles could look absolutely AWESOME in CG. I wonder... what if Weta took the Turtles on... *starts daydreaming*
Erm, anyway... I'm pretty much hoping by now that this won't bomb. I'll expect the worst, so I at least won't be disappointed... but that's all I can do for now. Story people, you better feed us something amazing...
I dunno where the '80s hate is coming from. Fashion-wise, I agree. But a lot of everything else just makes me happy. Music especially... that corny synthesizer just brightens my day with its sheer weirdness. :trazz: And I know this movie will majorly suffer from the "Turtles=kid fodder" sentiment the old toon created. Not that I have problems with the old toon... just in peoples' complete ignorance of where the TMNT actually came from.

CGI is definately not a problem...
FF: Advent Children was GODlike in terms of action and general badassness. It had a weak plot though
Appleseed is another cool CGI/anime movie.. interesting concept, awesome fighting sequencs.
Both were made in Japan though... they have more/better experiences with animation and CGI than we do.
THe Incredibles, although it was a comedy, was pretty dark at times, and took a somber tone, especially in the beginning when all the superheroes were outsed. PLUS it had some cool fighting sequences.
The First TMNT movie was cool cuz it used real life actors, but I don't know.. I kinda think that CGI is an interesting and cool direction for the series to take. It would certinatly allow the TMNT to do stuff that they would not be able to do if they had used real actors. ANd I don't like the idea of using BOTH real actors and CGI... like CGI turtles and real humans? It would certinatly look fake to me. I think either all real actors or all CGI is the way to go, and CGI is an interesting direction to take... I'm curious to see how they would execute it.
My only real concern is how people will look, such as April or Casey.. what will they look like?
I have no expectations for htis movie... I just think that it would be utterly ridicuilous if Laird would allow a company to really make a bad TMNT movie, you know? I mean, it can happen.. and did... (for instance, the third TMNT movie), but I would think that Laird would have learned from that mistake and ensure that this movie would be more successful.
We know that the director is a die-hard TMNT fan, so I have comfort knowing that the story should be good. I just think we need to polish off hte look of the Turtles.
Again... we can't know anything until we see some clips. Some actual clips that SHOW the TMNT's movements...then we would be able to make a better judgement as to their mouth movement or their kinetic movements during battles.

Well, it's not that Japan has better animators than the U.S. and other countries:ohwell: , more that they have, in general, far more mainstream action/eye candy movies being made (in both live-action and animation). (action and candy is their forte, IMO, not "life" per se) And frankly, I thought Final Fantasy wasn't all that great... First of all, it was motion capture, so it wasn't truly "animated" like the Incredibles; second, in spite of its motion capture, the characters did not feel alive. Often times, you have to break away just enough from reality to make the characters (or art in general) take on A LIFE OF THEIR OWN -- which is more important than carbon-copy realism. Want an example of what I mean? Look at the Mona Lisa. Look at Gollum. It wasn't enough to make him emulate reality as much as possible; they had to change the camera filters and alter the backgrounds -- in effect, altering the entire reality of the movie -- so that everything would flow together, so that nothing would be out of place.
Now... with the turtles, IF they didn't want them to look real, then they need to make sure that, if the turtles are stylized, which is absolutely fine -- that the rest of the characters/locales in the movie fit within the same reality. (that is, it shouldn't be the turtles are stylized one way and april and casey are terrible attempts to copy reality... nasty:dead: ) Even if they don't have the best software or animators, it could be done if they are creative enough to work with their limits and are sensitive to details in design.
However, the track records of Imagi and Munroe do not indicate such creativity/sensitivity that would be necessary to compensate for poorer software/animation quality... :|
...
So... I don't know. Maybe they'll hire some budding new talent. Maybe I gotta go do some vinyasas.:D

I looked at Imagi's site. They are looking for newly graduated animtors. I don't think I am willing to go over to Hong Kong but if I could work on turtles I would pack my bags.
I watch Advent Children over and over because it's stunning. Motion capture has done well for movies such as ploar express and in Lord of the rings. I don't dislike 3D but I feel there is a time and a place for it and unforunately companies are treating it as if it's the only type of animation worth doing anymore.
Hand drawn animation can still get oooos and ahhhhs, look at Miyazaki with studio Ghibli. I am not against CGI but I love traditional and traditigital animation.
What would be so wrong with a hand drawn TMNT feature that looks like the new series with 3D composting to give it that oompf!
I hope it does well in any form but I can't help but wish they would have taken a different route until I see some new clips. Maybe by sometime this summer they will have more things for us to see. It would be nice to get an update off the site every now and again.

Spider-man 3 will be like Star Wars. It'll kill anything that goes against it. TMNT will get smashed unless they release it at the right time.

Yeah... motion capture. Ew. It's like rotoscoping for 3D. Anyone ever see Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Rings? It's animated, but for a lot of the characters they just took live action videos and traced the characters. In some places they even xeroxed live action onto cels (getting low on budget). It may be "correct," but it looks very wooden. Even serious animation needs to be exaggerated a little for it to look right.
Reference footage is good for reference, but just tracing it (or for 3D, exact motion capture) just doesn't look right. That's why The Incredibles looked so great (not just because it's Pixar 8)). They're stylized, but work in their own world enough that it looks awesome. And they still feel like they have weight. Motion-capture or rotoscoping looks too "floaty" a lot of the time.

Woah I always describe it that way. It is 3D rotoscoping! Squash and stretch is the foundation principal of animation and you do not get that when you rotoscope real life period. I thought the point of animation was to do things that can not be done on film otherwise?

Precisely. :D I am liking this discussion... even if we aren't quite on topic.
Speaking of which...
Heheh, Ralph Bakshi's LOTR... I was going to use that in my argument that it's not what is done, but HOW it's done that makes something high quality. Look at Ralph Bakshi's take on LOTR. Now compare that to Pete Jackon's take on LOTR. They can't be compared. RB's version is total rat feces in the face of PJ's LOTR. However, they've got the exact same subject matter. Yet, one is utter crapola and the other is sheer genius. Subject matter did not make either of these movies good or bad. It was how the stories were told, how the themes were handled, how the characters were treated that made them good.
Subject matter is nothing more than a starting point, a foundation to build on. This foundation can be shaky, or even improbable-- and can thereby provide different levels of difficulty to make "good." But it has been done many times by many talented directors.
Getting back on track... the ability of the directors/creative supervisors to work with their limitations -- improbable origins and lackluster animation technology -- as well as build on what strengths they have -- hopefully a strong story, script, talented VAs, strong design, even great martial arts choreography -- to make a very worthwhile film.
I too hope that the animation at least will be good. Squash and stretch would just be great for the martial arts, which is almost like its own dance or visual music. Imagine the sleek chelonian shadows leaping energetically from one rooftop to another or down an alley, the great fight sequences they could have... Man, if only they could get that guy who has done work on The Matrix or Spider-Man II... And I think Jackie Chan's comical, fast-paced choreography would also fit the turtles. (comical as in, it's meant for entertainment... not necessarily silly or ridiculous) It would be great if the choreography styles could be combined.:D
Oh yeah. And if they could make those turtles look more like turtles before they start, Fledermaus would be most thrilled. At the moment, they look like they belong on that short-lived Father of the Pride animated series.

The new show has been very impressive in terms of martial arts choreography. Perhaps this movie will shine in that area too, especially given Mr. Laird's expectations. I'm willing to overlook any crappy design (to some extent) if it's awesome to watch in motion. That's why I'm not writing it off quite yet... because the new toon has shone so well (in general) as far as animation and fight choreography is concerned. All I'm saying (on topic! :O) is that it would change an at-best good movie to an awesome movie if the designs were better.
But I do like that this thread has given me the chance to geek out about animation. :D:D:D

my big question is.... if this CGI movie is based after the first and second films, why not use that specific turtle design? why the redesign? eh....
i work in marketing/graphic design.... and in my eyes, the poster is EXTREMELY amateurish. not only the poster art, but the fact that it was released. if it is, in fact, an unfinished image, it SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN RELEASED. if it's an actual finished/approved promo image... well... it SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN RELEASED (as it seriously sucks)... and the outlook on the animation quality and turtle design is not looking good. i can honestly say i've seen student 3D work that looks equal, if not better. compare that "promo image" to a screenshot of something from pixar. then, take into account that you're comparing a supposedly finished promotional pic to a screengrab. i'll reserve judgement on the film as a whole until/if this thing is released.
