The artwork of the comic

As you may know, I'm interested in getting the first vol of the comics. I went to the official site and was looking at the sample pages of the comics.

The artwork looks much better in the vol 1 comics than what I've seen of the current vol. It looked more detailed, and the character designs looked better. I think all the characters look kinda ugly in the current line.

But isn't it the same guy doing the comic art now who was doing it back then?

Jim Lawson did the City At War arc of Volume 1 (the last arc of the series), but his style back then was EXPONENTIALLY better than his style now.

In recent years he's just gotten lazy and claimed his kindergarten-quality art as "stylised". I honestly wish he'd either get his act together and draw the way he used to, or that Laird would just fire him.

But that'll never happen since he's Laird's old buddy. Which is honestly the only reason anyone would hire the guy considering the way he draws. There are hundreds of middle schoolers out there with more talent.

Volume 1 had a rotating staff of artists. It started out with art and inking done by both laird and Eastman, together. Which, in my opinion, is the best TMNT are the book ever had. There were guest artists and what-not throughout the run of the first volume; some with wildly different styles and takes on the characters' appearances.

Personally I like most of his Vol. 4 art and feel that it's nowhere near as bad as some people make it out to be. Some of the posters on this board are highly overdramatic about Lawson's art.

Is it different than some of his earlier stuff? Yes. Does that mean that's it hideous? No.

But then again who am I?

Honestly, it's not fair for me to judge because I haven't read any of vol 4. But what I've seen from the sample pages just doesn't look very appealing, especially when compared to the City at War samples I've seen.

I love Jim Lawson's art. While I'm partial to his turtles and his dinosaurs, I think its fair to say that I can see why people feel that his drawings of people leave a lot to be desired.

The art in Volume 4 is just plain bland. It's not horrendous at first glance... only when you compare it to his art from the Volume 1 comics. That's the only reason I can't like his art, because I know he can do better. He hears the criticism, and the only thing he can do is call it "stylized" (as DrSpengler already mentioned).

Lawson is the go-to guy when it comes to the art of the main TMNT title. He at least owes it to the people to show why Laird has so much confidence in him.

I don't have a problem with Lawsons Art or Style as he puts it....it's just that he's influenced the new comic and show as well as the toys and it shows...
He's not the worst tmnt artist but he's most definitely in my top 8 either.
but I will say this for him I don't think it's all on him I think it has allot to do with Eric Talbot's dark inking on his art.
