What happens on the afternoon of October 1 came to be known as the Pulse,
a signal sent though every operating cell phone that turns its user into something...well, something less than human. Savage, murderous, unthinking – and on a wanton rampage. Terrorist act? Cyber prank gone haywire?

It really doesn't matter, not to the people who avoided the technological attack. What matters to them is surviving the aftermath. Before long, a band of them – "normies" is how they think of themselves – have gathered on the grounds of Gaiten Academy, where the headmaster and one remaining student have something awesome and terrifying to show them on the school's moonlit soccer field. Clearly there can be no escape. The only option is to take them on.

CELL is classic Stephen King, a story of gory horror and white-knuckling suspense that makes the unimaginable entirely plausible and totally fascinating.

THIS sounds fascinating. Not only because of people basically getting turned into crazy zombie-like creatures, the Setting is in the Town that I Work in! I know all the places he mentions in the book! :D

It also makes us take a look at how dependent we are on technology, and how that dependency could be used to hurt us.

*Really wants to take a Workshop course with him*

I know what you mean :o

I have only just started reading Stephen King (I had to read 'Secret Window, Secret Garden' for English and now I want to read more)

I'm seeing if I can get my hands on 'Cell', since it seems such an intreaging book. I've been seeing it in the shops for a while and so I'm now plauged by the thought of buying it whenever I walk into a bookshop  It really does sound like a Stephen King classic

Okay, this is the first King-book since "Carrie" that I actually might like. I just hope that it's not going to end in "Oh woe is us! Cell phones are evil!". But yes, I'm buying that book (I don't like libraries at all, I like having my own books).

it finally got released over here (in the UK) last monday, and i finished it thursday night... i thought it was awesome! i love zombies and although its not zombies in the traditional undead sense i was glad to see king trying his hand (there's some pretty cool moments, although i wouldnt want to spoil them - lets just say i was quite shocked at what they can do!) its not up there with his epics (the dark tower, the stand, it, etc) but its quite a nice, if not short, story (with a very ubrupt ending i thought - the only bad point).

Oh boy...another Stephen King's noval. Most of his scenes are based around my alma mater in Colorado. There was a story that he tried to get a restaurant and he could not get in because he wore shorts, which is against the dress code.

Colorado? Isn't he the guy whose novels always take place in Maine?

Almost one year later, we get the book over here. They made the english version available as soon as the German version was out, which is rather lame. Anyways, I started reading it and Stephen King hasn't changed his writing one bit. He still tries too hard to sound very high-up and educated while only confusing things.

The story on the other hand is still very interesting and it's probably why I haven't chucked this book out yet.

EDIT: So it turns out that I had finally a couple of hours to sit back and read the 350 remaining pages without being disturbed. Sure, it is almost four o'clock in the morning now, but who cares.

The book began really good, as in very, very interesting and when they noticed the Phoners evolving I thought this could lead up to something even better. But then it happened.
Alice was killed off.
Now I understand why King did that, but after that, the book seemed to fall apart. Also, the big finale was neither big nor good. And what the f*** caused the Pulse now? Seriously. It's not like we're dumb and just forgot about all that by King using Jordan to give us pages of halfassed, badly researched, oversimplified techbabble. And something like an epilogue couldn't have hurt the book either. Just something to wrap the book up. The way it is now, it feels like King's just leaving us stay out in the rain. Also, after the spoiler up there, the soap opera takes over and ends up being completely unrealistic and just downright silly.

But all in all, it was a good read. Nothing spectacular, but good.

So, to those who finished it, how did you like it and what are your general thoughts about this book?
