All of the good ones end in an "o".....hmmm. Raphael's namesake is really Raphaello Sanzio but it got changed to what we know today.

actually on my set of Italian TMNT stationary, Raph is Raffaello...so that joke must have been edited out of the italian version of TMNT 2...
Cool.
Raphaello Sanzio. That's his name when he's with The Family.

2 of them never changed. One turtle's name is very similar as Raphael's....he was known as something else in his family, which is what his friends did not call him...

Raphael's just the anglicized version of Raphaello. Loads of historical figures get linguistical revamps: Cristoforo Colombo (Christopher Columbus), Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot), Marcus Antonius (Mark Antony) to name just a few. I suppose it's to keep our bumbling English tongues from murdering their precious language. Or for the sake of easier memorization and regurgitation.

Donatello's real name is Donato de'Bardi detto. He was known as Donatello in public. Side note, I read somewhere that he got arrested for hitting someone with a large stick.

Ha! You're kidding me, he hit someone with a stick?! That's so stupidly awesome.
So it was a riddle? I thought "Donatello" was the familiar or informal version of "Donato."

Maybe Mikey is just being antagonistic towards Raph? We all know how Raph gets... all introverted and it's harder for him to loosen up and have fun like the other 3 turtles. I think Mikey might've just been pointing that out whilst poking a little fun at Raph.

maybe but I thought that it might be interesting to fellow TMNT fans.

Yep... according to the book I have on Donatello (and let me tell ya...books on him are very rare! Took me years to find a book on him) in the early 1400's he beat up a German guy with a stick. Dunno why..:P
And where do you get the deto at the end of Donatello's name?? It's Donato Di Nicollo De Betto Bardi. Never seen a deto.
Raphael's full name was Raffaello Di Giovanni Santi Sanzio De Urbino of Umbria. But there were 2 Renaissance artists named Raphael. One was the painter/singer Raphael Santi and the other was a Sculpter who was actually friends with Michelangelo. The artist the turtle was named after tho wasn't friends with Michelangelo cuz uh well Michelangelo had few friends...he hated just about everybody but his male lovers (read "The Stars Compell"...the other Raphael is in it). The reason he was called Raphael tho was cuz it was his nick name just like Donatello was Donato's nickname.

Wow.. their names were very long...
Yep...Spanish/Mexican/Italian names are all long
(Donatello) Donato Di Nicolo Di Betto Bardi = Donato son of Nicolo son of Betto Bardi
Raffallo Di Giovanni Santi Sanzio De Urbino of Umbria = Raphael son of Giovanni (John) Santi Sanzio of Urbino (the town), Umbria (the state)
Michelangelo Di Lodovico Di Lionardo Bounarati Simone = Michelangelo son of Lodovico son of Lionardo Bounarati Simone but he was mostly known as Michelangelo Bounarati (he also had a brother named Lionardo which is another form of the name Leonardo  )
Leonardo Di Ser Piero Da Vinci = Leonardo son of Master Piero of Vinci
Oh and Urbino is where the modern pizza was created by a man named Rafael/Raphael in 1885.
Oh and guess what! Im related to Michelangelo Bounarati! :D Distant cousins.

Hahaha, the long names kind of remind me about that story of the kid who fell down the well and his name was so long that it wasted like 2 minutes everytime they had to say it so he drowned by the time they got help. I think it's "the reason chinese names are so short" or something. Oh well :P
