Because choices are good? Or because there would be more money to be milked? Perhaps the victims of having 8 different flavors of Windows Vista are the software vendors, who would have to explain the differences between each edition to their customers.

Here’s a quick rundown of the 8 product editions:

Windows Starter 2007 - This edition does not include the Aero graphical user interface, hence it’s not Vista-branded. And there’s no 64-bit edition, no networking, no Fast User Switching, no DVD Authoring, no gaming common controller support, and no image editing with enhanced touchup, and only three applications/windows are allowed to run simultaneously. Good only for really basic users with low budgets. --WTF?

Windows Vista Home Basic - This is the true baseline version of Windows Vista; think Windows XP Home Edition. You can expect to find features such as Windows Firewall, Windows Search, Photo Library and etc. And every other edition below will be based on this edition. Good for general consumers or even the kids.

Windows Vista Home Basic N - Same as the Home Basic Edition, but minus the Windows Media Player. This edition is for the Europeans as they have antitrust rulings against Microsoft which does not allow the player to be bundled.

Windows Vista Home Premium - This edition includes features such as Media Center Extender support, Cable Card support, DVD authoring and Tablet PC functionality. This edition is best suited for notebooks and networked home desktops, but it’s probably insufficient for the geeks.

Windows Vista Business - Analogous to the Windows XP Professional, this will probably be the most widely used edition in corporate environments. This edition allows joining of domains, non-Microsoft networking (Netware, etc), Remote Desktop and Microsoft Windows Web Server. Most geeks and IT professionals will want to go for this edition.

Windows Vista Business N - Just like Home Basic N Edition, this one is meant for the Europeans and comes with no media player.

Windows Vista Enterprise - This edition will come with several new features such as Virtual PC, multi-language user interface (MUI) and Secure Startup (BitLocker Drive Encryption).

Windows Vista Ultimate - This one is going to be the most expensive, most feature-packed, and perhaps the most pirated edition of Vista. It’ll include new and unique features such as Game Performance Tweaker, Podcast creation utility, online “Club” services and privileged product support. This edition will be perfect for Windows fanboys.

8 different versions? EIGHT and we don't even get the multi-lauguage setup until we buy the cooperate version? Whoop-de-fu*king do. I'm not buying a one of them until the following oversights (see: fu*k ups) have been remided.

1. I know Windows Vista is going to block MP3 ripping as best as it can. This is MS licking the asses of the RIAA to keep their support of the PC as the center of the consumer's Multimedia Hub rather than things such as the PS3 (which would be a consumer desaster the likes of which you cannot possibly imagine), and so we will also buy CD's for personal collections, and then rebuy (for almost the same price) the songs on itunes (or it's equivelent) to take them with us in an Mp3 player licensed by Apple. No way in hell. I buy physical media, rip it at the highest quality possible, and take it with me. No, I don't share it. I just like to know I have a master copy, and there is no license on it. When I buy it, it's mine, period, no discussion. I want to go back in 30 years and play it again, or be able to re-rip if the HD crashes and I loose everything, or my DVD-R's fail me. Since Vista currently blocks that (it will be hacked, but not for a few months) I'm not touching it.

2. Windows Media Player will have issues now with "unlicensed content". Meaning, any video that dosen't have a RIAA or MPAA license time bomb in it runs the risk of not running, leaving me to go and get myself a third party player (coughwinampcough). What's the point of it? Same problem may exist with unlicensed Mp3 support. I know the RIAA put pressure on MS for that. We'll see weither they cave or not. Either way, any Monitor/HDTV manufactured before 2 months from now (at the earliest) will not work with HD content anyway, and I have no intention of supporting HD-DVD or Blue Ray since I believe them both to be train wrecks in the making. No thank you Windows Media Player. Sad, because I've always LOVED Media Player. But I'm not giving up my rights for it.

3. Rumors presist that MS is going to start giving Freeware software makers hell since they are a deadly threat to MS's Office Suit line of software. No way in hell. I love my freeware options, and it is a fundimental part of any OS. What? Winamp is doing better than WMP? Just deny them a license to make software for Windows platforms. This too is just rumor for now, and they would probobly never abuse it to that extent, but any abuse of freeware software rights is enough to do it for me.

4. This they can't fix. Vista is a resource whore. 512MB RAM to run at th emost basic level? Yeah, I can handle it, but how much money am I going to have to put into this thing to get any hardcore stuff going like video capture if I upgrade to Vista. I'll keep my MPEG-4 Encoding card, Dual Core Athlon 2.5 Ghz core processor and Windows XP thank you, fu*k you.

5. There is no way any functional version of Vista will sell for anything less than $700. I could buy a powerhouse PC for that with XP included.....or a Mac.

6. PC gamers....I pity you. I really do.

Vista can go back to the Longhorn ranch and stright into the butcher shop for all I care. This thing is a DESASTER. It takes your rights away, takes your ability to do anything with your PC away, and eats what resources you have left. No thank you. When I need an upgrade, Helllooo Intel Powered Macintosh. I will not let Microsoft tell me that I am forbidden form RIPPING A FU*KING MP3. That's just basic utilization of property I own to be used in a more efficent way while still leaving me a physical way. Not going to happen. I pity anyone who pays what they're going to charge for this Operating System just to get crash bugs, glitches, Blue screens, and a brand new resource whoring G.U.I

Hell, the future versions will likely be even more restrictive. Communist computing.

Good thing I'm not even thinking about moving away from Windows 2000. Next thing I'll get will probably be a Linux-version. I'm sick of this crap.

Fedora is a pretty good operating system, if you get to know some basic linux commands its easy to work and alot more powerful, and Windows Vista will flop, but alot of computer games are going to be Windows Vista restricted, so you need to upgrade to play certain games, like the Halo 2 for the PC! Microsoft might be stupid, but I love my brand new 360.

Oh yeah, 360 is great, but as far as OS's go, I'm done with them.

I guess I'm just gonna have to ride out Windows XP until it's completely obsolete.

I'm with Doom on this. I guess my crappy PC will explode before that though.

Same here. The only thing I use my computer for is the net. I don't game on it or anything, just coming on here and listening to music. I'm sure it'll still hold up on that front for a while.

Windows Vista will no longer support DVD-ROM drives that do not handle region coding in hardware (RPC1 drives) - thus preventing playback of DVDs that are region/CSS encoded with those drives. Not a big problem, as RPC1 drives haven't been officially manufactured since 2000 (and Microsoft claims their drives are all broken), but for those with hacked drives (RPC2 with RPC1 firmware), or move the RPC1 drive to new computers, well, no more DVD movies for you!

.......heh

Podcast creation utility? Oo; That... Shoot, you can do that for free with Winamp and the right plugins, and I daresay Winamp would put out a better finished project.

And blocking mp3 ripping and non-Microsoft software? Is that even legal? Besides, even if they do 'block' this other software, there will be emulators and hacks on the 'Net within weeks, and fully functional versions within a few months. They really shouldn't try to stop something that can't be stopped.

How very lame. Oo;

DOWN WITH MACS! Nah, I like the notebook computers, they are small and work well, but I dont like their desktops. But anything but windows, go for it!

*gag*

Yeah I think I'll just stick with XP until my computer dies. Maybe even after. I am definitely Mac-bound.

One of the beta versions of Vista. I have a partitioned hard drive. I use Vista to laugh at it, and XP for everything else.
