Ahh the perks of working in the in the stores video department..the "Hot Sheet", the video buyers guide...and here's the TMNT volume 4 ad. Look how they market the DVD...see the great lengths they use to pimp their products. and heck, discuss the new volume. :D

I like how it says 14.98 in the ad and on the DVD box it says 11.75...I see they go to great lengths to use stock photos they already used before. Just like the new toon DVDs eh?
Thanks for posting now i know when it comes out.

I laugh cause they think a special feature is "full screen" ; "surround sound" and " enhanced for superior quality"
Sure, 400,000 boys but ya know, there are some girls who like TMNT...

I will never understand why they stopped using the cover art style of the first volume, it was perfect, it represented the original toon and was even the kind used on the old VHS box's, but instead they use these stupid new toon stock photos with the the only difference being that they have pupils and belt buckles, I mean for god sakes their taking the Don pic from the front of volume three and enlarging it to a giant face, it's freaking ridiculous.
As for special features, get the damn PSA"s, since they started around '90 which was the fourth season, Lions Gate should wise up, and hopefully their still around.
Does "Packaging that will pop off the shelves in Neon Red" really appeal to store owners?

Ya know, I don't care about anything that has to do with cover art work, etc. I get to finally see the Casey Jones ep! I had not seen this ep even when I was younger. I'm freakin pumped about this. Let's get this DVD out already. I just wish they'd do this every 2 - 4 months. I hope they don't wait every 8 months, then another 4 like they did last year.

Yeah, I know there was apparently an episode that never got passed script form, but what went unaired?
Spitfire
03-07-2006, 03:34 PM
Putrescent suggested I watch "Night Of The Rogues" and in it is the character Scum-bug. In the begining of the episode Shredder says "You couldn't forget your old pals..." Then Scum-bug says "Old Scum-bug is itching for a peice of you turtles too" Also Putrescent mentioned seeing an animation cel oh Wyrm who was in the toy line but never in the show. So this leads me to believe there was an unaired episode starring Scum-bug and Wyrm.

The whole Scumbug and Wyrm thing is crazy.
They both appeared in Archie Comics in '90, Scumbug was mad by Playmates in '90, Wyrm was made in '91, looking very different from the comic version, Scumbug appears on the toon in '93 looking like his action figure, and i have also saw and animated version of Wyrm looking like his '91 action figure.
Weird.
As for Lions Gate hurrying up, might as well stop the complaining, not having the old toon in season box sets is stupid, but they kind of are themselves.

I'm glad we got info on this and it'll probably be about ten bucks at Best Buy. I just hope the back of the box isn't white like the ad shows cuz that looks ugly to me and the past DVDs usually had more color on the backround for the back cover. I'm wonderin' if this one'll have previews or not before the main menu on the disc cuz the last one did. I don't really care for 'em and I don't watch 'em after I've already seen 'em. I'll just go directly to the menu so I won't hafta sit through the previews if I haven't watched the whole DVD in one sitting. I hope the Casey Jones episode is good as I anticipate it to be cuz I've never seen it or most of the earlier seasons.

Since it's the next 12 episodes in the season, then wouldn't these be the ones on Volume 4?
#31 The Ninja Sword of Nowhere
#32 20,000 Leaks Under the City
#33 Take Me to Your Leader
#34 Four Musketurtles
#35 Turtles, Turtles Everywhere
#36 Cowabunga Shredhead
#37 Invasion of the Turtle Snatchers
#38 Camera Bugged
#39 Green With Jealousy
#40 Return of the Fly
#41 Casey Jones: Outlaw Hero
#42 Mutagen Monster
But this dude who reviewed it (I'm guessing he has a Delorean and went ahead to next week and bought it) at amazon.com, has these episodes listed.

Attack of the Big MACC
Camera Bugged
The Four Musketurtles
Turtles at the Earth's Core
Beware the Lotus
Take Me to Your Leader
Blast from the Past
Casey Jones - Outlaw Hero
Turtles, Turtles Everywhere
Leatherhead: Terror of the Swamp
Corporate Raiders from Dimension X
And that's not even in order. "Attack of the Big MACC" was on Volume 3. And some of those wont even be released on Volume 5. So I take it the first list I listed will be the Episodes on Volume 4?

(Sigh!) I've long disliked the cover art for these old 'toon DVDs...It's almost as bad as replacing the music and sound effects in the old arcade games on the newer TMNT games. But, whatever -- a collection of classic Ninja Turtles cartoons semi-packaged to look like new ones is better than none at all.
As for the order of the episodes, I wouldn't be suprised at all if those boneheads totally screw up the order, just like the DVDs of the new 'toon.

I do hope the next release isn't too far off, though. It's been ages since I saw the episode that introduced Lotus (probably my favorite episode) and this set is just teasing me by being only a few episodes off of that one. Ah well. Utrom’s Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Volume 4
This is the second volume of the third season, which, from experience, is what most fans warrant as the last of the “good” seasons done in the original style (not including season 8-10.) And, this is true in several ways. The writing was of a more consistent quality during this season and had only a very minute drop in quality from previous seasons. This, of course, is due to the fact that there were 47 episodes in this season. Obviously, it’s a great deal easier to have a higher level of quality in a shorter season, and the first and second seasons took great advantage of their shorter lengths, providing some of the best episodes that children’s animation has ever been witness to, but the third season is my personal favorite as it felt more fun than the last two seasons, while still maintaining a serious tone that future seasons would lack.
Plot wise, the villains are currently trapped in the center of the Earth, surrounded by lava, and are a tad bit angry that they haven’t met their goal of world domination. Anyway, this shouldn’t be news to those who purchased the previous volume, so let’s get on with the episodes.
Note: Episode Ratings are based on a Five Point Scale.
Episode Reviews:
Episode 1: The Ninja Sword of Nowhere- I have a really difficult time enjoying this episode since Rob Paulsen isn’t in it. Regardless, this was a pretty awesome idea. The Shredder gets his hands on a sword that can cut through dimensions, Donatello splatters a watermelon all over himself (Yes, it would appear the brain of the group has been glossing over some of the crucial points in physics), and the turtles don’t even care enough to buy Splinter a gift. This episode is really hurt by the shoddy ending, and, coupled with a replacement voice for Raph, it’s really lacking. 2 Stars **
Episode 2: 20,000 Leaks Under the City- Another episode that is lacking in plot, but this time the entire cast is here. So at least it got one thing right. I’ve never liked this episode very much, but that’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it at all. It just really didn’t have any point to it whatsoever. This one, I can take it or leave it. 3 stars ***
Episode 3: Take Me to Your Leader- I could see the argument on how bad this episode was, but it’s still one of my favorites, so sue me. Leonardo feels that he is no longer cut out to be the leader of the awesome foursome, so he abandons his comrades, leaving them to fare for themselves (to little avail.) This episode was awesome for two reasons: You get to hear Don, Mike, and Raph bicker over who is the better leader, and, at the end, Krang’s parachute features a large smiley face on it, prompting him to say “Have a Nice Day.” The latter just seemed so out of place that I couldn’t help but to laugh.
4 stars ****
Episode 4: The Four Musketurtles- For me, this episode had it all. Leonardo gets knocked on the head and thinks he’s D'Artagnan, so Splinter forces the other three turtles to wear musketeer outfits in order for them to fight Shredder. With Leonardo’s new personage, he’s a bit more daring than he ever was before and actually bests old tincan in a dual. Excellent episode. Five Stars *****
Episode 5: Turtles, Turtles Everywhere- Standard plot, mediocre episode that had it’s high points, but also had its low points. And we spin the old spinner, around and around it goes, and this episode recieves: Two Stars **
Episode 6: Cowabunga Shredhead- Here we go; this definitely ranks up there as one of the best episodes of all time. There’s no way that anyone could claim this episode to be in any way serious, and this one’s just for the comedy. A million Mikeys and one Shredder! Will old tingrin make it out alive? Will the world ever be the same again? Tune in next time to find out (or watch the DVD; I’ll leave that one up to you.) If this episode does nothing else for you, at least watch it for the simple fact that Bebop and Rocksteady are dressed up as maids, doing Shredder’s housework. Amazingly, this is no lie. 5 Stars *****
Episode 7: Invasion of the Turtle Snatchers- Great episode. Donatello and Rocksteady are abducted in order to be the paythings for a child alien. This is essential viewing for any turtle fan as we watch Donatello and Bebop work together towards a common goal, and also for the fact that it’s a Donny episode. He seemed to be the most neglected turtle in terms of stand-alone episodes and, although the other turtles did play important roles, this was pretty much a Donatello episode. 5 Stars *****
Episode 8: Camera Bugged- This was a pretty neat idea; an alien visits Earth, and his camera literally captures any object it films. Although this idea could have been fleshed out a little bit more, it’s still a good episode, and a worthy asset to this collection.
3 Stars ***
Episode 9: Green with Jealousy- Okay, as much as I hate to say it, it’s hard to really call this episode good. In fact, it’s hard to even call this episode bad. I suppose weird is the best term for it. I really don’t know what to say about this episode, but basically the plot entails Irma being Irma and the turtles (sans Donny) being smitten with her by a love potion. 3 Stars ***
Episode 10: Return of the Fly- Now, this was a good episode. A follow up to the last episode with Baxter Stockman, and a worthy successor indeed. This is a fabulous episode, and one can only truly appreciate its merits by watching the episode them self, so I’ll leave it at that. This one hits it out of the ballpark, but sadly I can only give it 5 stars (since that’s as high as my scale goes.) 5 Stars *****
Episode 11: Casey Jones: Outlaw Hero- Quote of the day for this episode is, “Who’s this guy think he is- Filthy Harry?” Solid writing on this one.
4 Stars ****
Episode 12: Mutagen Monster: Sadly, we don’t leave this collection of episodes on the highest of notes. This episode tells an awkward story about a mutant cow that is made up of a bunch of other cows. That’s all I’m going to say for this episode. 2 Stars **
Overall, this is a great selection of episodes, and is a worthy representation of this series. I salute you Lions Gate for trying to cash in on the popularity of the new series. *Cough* Er..I mean continuing to show your love for the Turtle’s fanbase by providing these excellent releases. You go above and beyond the call of duty by presenting us with the highest quality of special features, easily comparable to any other DVD on the market.
Well, maybe not. Anyway, you get what you pay for, and Lions Gate is renowned for that. They know they’re releasing cheap DVDs, so they sell them cheap. However, I, and probably most of my fellow old toon fans, would definitely be willing to shell out the extra bucks to get a quality release and see these episodes in box set form (the way they should have originally been released), but since that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen any time soon, I can settle for these, providing that Lions Gate finishes releasing the rest of the series.
Note: Video and Audio Quality are based on a ten point Scale.
Video Quality:
Alright, I’ll quit the complaining, and tell you what you want to hear. The video quality is the same quality as the last release. All of the episodes are significantly compressed in order to fit all twelve episodes on a single DVD. This doesn’t really detract too much from the viewing experience, and (considering that there was absolutely no clean up process applied to these episodes) they all look very good for their age.
Truthfully, the compression issue is only a minor quibble as it really only affects the Intro sequence, and, by all means, every episode is more than watchable. Compared to the VHS tapes, this DVD is about a thousand times more clearer, so it will easily replace your overused video tapes that you’ve been holding on to for almost two decades.
6 Stars ******
Audio Quality:
Well, the “Special Features” panel on the back says it all; these are 2.0 Audio Tracks. Now, come on, by now, you surely didn’t really expect LG to remaster the audio into Dolby Digital 5.1?
Really, I’m just joking. There really aren’t any huge musical scores in this series, and the audio mostly consists of the characters talking to one another, so a 5.1 track would be completely senseless. And I wouldn’t really want much more than what we’re given. All of the dialogue is audible, and the music stays at a consistent level.
8 Stars ********
Special Features:
Got ya! However, since the good folks at Lions Gate feel their hard work should not go unnoticed, I will mention that the back lists the special features as being a revolutionary “Full Screen” presentation and breath-taking “2.0 Audio Tracks.” Rest assured, Lions Gate, the cutting-edge technology that you’ve applied to this DVD will not go unnoticed.
0 Stars
Summary:
This DVD should definitely go on your list simply for the episodes. Every episode offered here is uncut, and offers far better quality than previous video releases. Every TMNT fan owes it to themselves to pick up Volume 4 and enjoy the wonder within.

Does anyone know in which season Rat King is introduced ? Thanks.

04-06-2006, 12:49 AM
I think enter the rat king... Season 3, episode 27.
This dvd rocks, although it's not perfect I'm just glad I'm getting all the old school greatness that's not 50 megs with swedish subs.
BTW I pm'd putre about the wyrm commercial. I have it in high quality, on my computer. It features brand new animation not just of wyrm but of chrome dome, dirtbag, and groundchuck. They all had cartoon appearances, but the animation in the commercial all has them in the turtle's sewer lair where they never had appeared before.
Could be episode #76 or w/e it was. I can think of a zillion reasons why it wasn't released, back then parents had a bone to pick with the TMNT for no reason other than it was popular.
To prove I'm not bluffing here's pics:
http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/484/chromedome7aa.jpg
http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/5940/wyrm5xu.jpg

http://img77.imageshack.us/img77/9436/turtles0gc.jpg

After rewatching, the animation is ESPECIALLY bad on Wyrm. And Dirtbag has such simple animation that I'm unsure if Playmates made the studio animate the figures because they weren't going to be getting a lot of screen time, or if there really is a lost episode. I can't tell if the others are just reused animation with different backgrounds, but I don't think I ever saw Chromdome twirl his sword like that.
They all seem to lean more towards their toy counterparts, which leads me to believe that Playmates got the studio to do quick aimations for the commercial. If you remember Playmates was only going to make toys if there was a cartoon, and that's how the show was born.
Then again, there's a lot of reused animation in the commercials including this one, witch a pic of mikey (not shown) and a pic of Donny and co. clearly from season 1 with the beak line.
I really don't know what to believe :p

I say we call TMNT Vol 4, "Bring on the Alternate Voice Talent" (If you dare use that word). 4 (maybe even 5...I lost count) Non Barry Gordon Donnie episodes, 2 non Pat Fraley Krang episodes, and 1 non Rob Paulsen (and by far the most painful) Raphael episodes. I swear the Raphie alternate was so bad, I wanted to shove sharpened pencils in my ears, but thankfully he didn't say much.
EDIT: I did however find it funny to hear Barry Gordon as Bebop with pre-recorded screams and the like in several episodes.

Finally got it.
Return of the Fly and Casey Jones: Outlaw Hero are, not surprisingly, the best. I liked how they portrayed Rat King in the old series as really a very neutral character, who just does his own thing for whichever side whenever he feels like it.
As much as I love the Mirage and New Toon incarnations of Casey Jones, the Old Toon version will always be my favorite. He's just bat-s*** CRAZY in this show! "The Martians are coming! The Martians are coming!!"
I think my favorite line in the episode was at the very beginning, when Casey was taking on those thugs in the sporting good store. After he pins the fat one to the wall with ski-poles; "This guy is a PSYCHO!!"
It was really Rob Paulson's delivery that made it so funny, honestly.
EDIT: And The Ninja Sword of Nowhere, despite having Raph's cruddy alternate voice, had some great animation from Toei. At least, it easily stands-out amongst the Korean-drawn episodes on the rest of the disk.

Just got Volume 4 today.
And I would say that Season 3 has some cool episodes. Specially when it's the season that introduces a lot of charaters.
I remenbered seeing the Casey Jones Episode years ago on TV.
He's a lot different from the one we all know from the newer series.
This one makes me think of Rambo only he doesn't show his real face with his hockey mask on.
I heard that this Casey Jones never takes off his mask, as if it were to be his actual face which seems really bazar in my pointer view.
The episodes with Raph, Don, and Krang's voices being more annoying than they sound kinda gets out of hand.

Yeah, Old Toon Casey was kinda like a "good Jason".

Too bad he's only a guest charater and not a common charater like he is in the newer series.

I had posted this immediately after the first poster asked. If anything you could have just read the thread and found the answer. It's nothing to get worked up about though.
The episode was on the last disc, volume 3. If you don't remember go back and rewatch the episode, because it was a great one.
Oh and common character, J Legault? I think he's only shown up once on the newer series if memory serves me right. He had about a dozen episodes in the old toon.

true, course I don't know how many in total.
I just heard he's not in as many as the other Casey Jones who's been in 50+ episodes in the new series.

Old school Casey is a better Casey than new series version deevolves into. Just a plain badass, completly insane phsycho vigilante, hard enough to get away with at the time

WHAT Personlity? It's as bland as Thatcherism, no wonder April/Don thrives in the fanfiction world.
You know, the personality he displays in the episodes he's a main part of. Watch them again.

He also has a way of words in that episode too.
I wonder if the TMNT ask him if he ever bothers to take off that mask or just glued it on his face for no reason.
Cause I'd ask that question if I met the old school Casey in person.

And you know... I just got volume 2 Monday! I really want to get the next 2 that are out... but I was a bit deterred at first with season 4 since the Mutegen Monster is on the disk.
As for Casey? Comic, man... original comic. I like how he's just deep down a scarred youth, and a semirealistic version of what one would be like.

I think the reviewer was a little negative in his reviews of the episodes. but what ever **shrugs** every one is entitled to his opinion. I don't agree with his comment about Donatello being neglected in stand alone episodes, since since season three he had the first stand alone episdoe and has aleast two or three episdoes in each volume relaese of episodes where he gets spot light in some form or another. And Leonardo got alot of attention in this batch of episodes too.
Raphael seems to be the one who is neglected in stand alone episdoes, not Donatello. In fact can any one off the top of their head think of a stand alone episode featureing Raphael in season three?

Casey is really cool in this series and surprocingly quite badass, while still wacky. He had great lines and and i just loved his rugged 80's punk look. And so what if he neer takes off that mask, in a way it makes him even more cool and mysteriuos. Did any one notice how his mask actually emotes sometimes?
