::raises hand:: TMNTA fan here! My fav version actually.
Unfortunately, I lost most of my issues years ago... all I have left are #48, 50, 36, and the one where they meet Archie. Oh, and #46, but it's in crap condition. :(
Anyhow, what did you want to discuss?

And Future Mike and Leo, they never got enough page time. Granted I loved how they Just did F. Raph and Don, but they did need more of the others. And Mez, I wanted more Mez and her connection to Ninjara

Thanks for replying everyone!

Anyways, I wanted to discuss a few things:

a) The Art: What was your favorite art period? Mine was those from around the "4 Horsemen/Mutanimals" Saga (around issue 38 I think?) through the end. Speaking of, does anyone know the name of this penciller and what other works he/she's done?

b) The Cancellation: Does anyone know if any formal ending was given to this series? After the last real issue, there were two issues called "The Early Years", and it ended there. Anything after that to conclude the adventures of the TMNTA characters? (And I don't mean the new Mirage series).

c) Who else loved the future stuff? Yknow, the future shark trilogy, the death of the mutanimals, the Cyber Turtles, etc?

d) Have any memorabilia ever been produced based on the likeness in the era I mentioned above, the art from 38 onward? I LOVED the look of the characters in those last 25 or 30 issues.

I think the artist you mean is Chris Allan. The only work of his I know of besides TMNTA, however, is issues #26-28 of "Knuckles The Echidna".
He's my fav turtle artist too. :D

Hmmmmm...well i'm a big archie fan, but i haven't readed many of em so i couldn't really disscuss with you about em.
Tho that might change when pwdesai scans em (if i can get em before the comic police gets him and he gets busted :P ) but for now i'll pass since i wouldn't know what to say.
P.S: The mutanimals rock(ed )...gecko da man! :P

I loved the Future Turtles, especially with their cybernetic armour.

I thought the death of the Mutanimals though was really unneccesary. I mean to me it seems they really should've kept some of them (atleast 3) alive and have the remaining members avange the death of their fallen members.

It WAS a fun story though :)
This series had so much potential if it was allowed to keep going. The art (Chris Allan?) jsut got better and better, and he even began pencilling the covers!!!

Doesn anyone have any of his TMNT art on your computer? Id love to have some for my desktop :)

Well I have one thing I have to say about archie. The cartoon was made to bring TMNT to a younger audience. The first season was geat but after that it got boring. Archie on the other hand had good story lines and usually good art. It was made for the same purpose as the cartoon, but it did it much better.

darthsmozers
12-27-2002, 01:42 PM
The archie series DID have some more "adult" themes...lots of death, adult issues, etc.

Shellfox
12-27-2002, 01:58 PM
A good load of the Archies seemed to revolve around Religion, which can't be said for a lot of books, geared toward kids. Exile, intollerance, Death be radation, the evil of White settelers, Fighting in relgions, mass genacide give archie credit they did a lot of contoversial stuff, it just looked like good clean fun. Of all the stuff Archie has done TMNT was probly the best, I don't read anything else they do aside from sonic, but how it was geared its impressive. Sonic use to be till Sega flexed its control, then we couldn't kill anyone or have sonic do anything uncool (like be in a relation ship, hell the guy has like 3 girls all after him, screw the rules deal with them, although Amys just a little kinky a 8 year old in a 12 year old body after a 16 year old or something). Any way given that, and how they draw the sonic cast most of the time, I sorts hope Archie doesn't do the TMNT again, they'd look like crap.

darthsmozers
12-27-2002, 02:06 PM
Unless of course the series was restarted where it left off. I mean, so many plots could have evolved....the future TMNT's were always a hit, and so many cool stories could have been continued :(

Nevertheless the children were the target audience. And thats what I said, it was much better than the cartoon.

Even as a kid, I knew Archie was getting away with *alot*. I loved being able to read about a TMNT that wasn't complete corn, and didn't ever talk down to children.
One of my fav "can't belive it" moments was in issue 56, when Candy looks into Null's eyes and sees the Mutanimals in Hell. I'd never seen anything like that in a "kid's" comic before or since.

(Another thing I learned from that issue: If the turtles think an enemy is human, they tend to pull their punches a bit. But as soon as they realize it's a robot, they will **** them up good. :D )

still love the regilgious overtones in the series, as far as I know no other TMNT series delt with that many religions that respectfully.

Archie was the perfect blend of Comidy and Buttt kick action

darthsmozers
12-27-2002, 08:44 PM
Yeah, in terms of religions we had the sons of silence who almost worshipped the stone, we had the whole deal wth the dragon and ninjara and japan and all of that, then the religion that came along with tatoo and that 4-armed tiger, up in the mountains. We also had the four horsemen whcih is sort of a religious notion, then the stuff with that blue lady with the tail, yknow, that two issue storyline, then the moon eyes foxes, etc. lots of various religious sects, and the open-minded TMNT went along for the entire ride. WOW!

Shellfox
12-27-2002, 09:16 PM
Not to metion Al Falcon and the White Stone, Verminator X and his worshiping Tech, Jagwar and his father, the Path of the 4 winds, and the Souith ammerican natives and the Dinos and Asspects of the Fox Religion.

Shame they never did much with Naga, he was only in one issue but I like Ninjaras brother. Still pissed they never ansewered weather Raph was going to ask her to marry him right before the Black Hole Triligoy began.

Still I do feel a bit cheated by the Moon Eyes saga, yeah Raph was pissed off a lot, well give him a break His best freinds were just killed horribly and it was his future selfs fault. Hard to believe that Ninjara would choose to live with the wolves, she left the island for adventure, hard to believe that she'd settle down with a possible dangerously mutated Wolf who she had little in common with, in a suculded place, where she was the out sider. Yeah I knew she had to leave Rpah at some point but I all ways thought I'd be because her past as a theif caught up to her, and she choose to go back to it, that or go back to the island

darthsmozers
12-27-2002, 09:29 PM
Wow I better go back and re-read those. About a year ago I found the back issues of the moon eyes saga, so its not to fresh in my mind....I know Raph was with a fox lady in the cyber turtles storyline, but i always thought that was Ninjara who changed her name???

I might have to go get out the collection and sit down for a few hours. Also, what's this talk of another new TMNT comic. Are they supposed to come out with a new series that is not by Mirage?

Karpo_007
12-28-2002, 04:35 PM
Yeah, there will be a new comic based on the cartoon, and it is targeted towards younger audience... That's kind of disapinting, I was hoping for something like Ultimate Spider-Man, not a "second archie series".

(Another thing I learned from that issue: If the turtles think an enemy is human, they tend to pull their punches a bit. But as soon as they realize it's a robot, they will **** them up good. :D )

That was always one of the best scenes -

ROBOT 1: "We're more than just robots!"
ROBOT 2: "We are thanosoids, dead flesh joined with the most powerful cybernetic polyzerkonium circuitry!"
FUTURE DON: "IE, they're fancy robots. Lets waste em!"

In terms of the NEW Mirage series, I have all 6 or 7 issues so far, havent read a single on though. as for the mutinals the only other time we saw them was at the end of one book, where they all had halos over their heads

As for the cow, HE WAS A HEAD, I'll overlook the whole breathing in space since its common in sci-fi, but he had no body, how did he eat?, where were his organs? What the hell could he bye with what Stump paid him?

Loved how they finnaly worked everything with Don together in 49-50, finally making the Japaenes spirts and Other who came to don tie together with the turn stone. It was in the Letters page how those 2 would all link to something big in dons future, so I'm guessing the turn stone. Kinda makes you wonder what else coul;d have happened to don

First and foremost, my TWO MAIN AREAS OF INQUIRY: what was the "Year of the Turtle" mini-series and what was this alleged "The Forever War" all regarding? All detailed information and available synopses would be highly appreciated. As I noted before, I lost track of the series after 72, assuming it had gone on, only to find that it actually came to an abrupt close. I know I flipped through some issue, perhaps the second of the "Year of the Turtle" trilogy at a magazine stand, and I copped a gander at an advertisement for the continuation of the future turtles and Shredder a la an artistic sketch of Shredder innocuously impaling Don on his jagged armband (that takes some major upper-body strength, to be sure). Nowadays, it's next to impossible to get any of this without shelling (no pun intended) some hefty cash.

Today, I must've been struck by the nostalgia bug as I sifted through my "small" jambalaya of comic books ranging primarily from TMNT Adventures to the first thirty or so editions of The Simpsons, Itchy & Scratchy, Radioactive Man, and Bartman (some Batman, too). It's mainly Archie, considering I have quite a conglomeration of Sonic the Hedgehog comic books, as well.

I was always a fan of the cartoon series, but lost track of so many episodes along the way. The whole Baxter "The Fly" Stockman saga is hilarious when you reminisce back to the series. He could never catch a break, constantly getting lost in this dimension or that terra incognita of the space-time continuum. And what about the Technodrome? Where ELSE could they have marooned that metallic fortress? I know the Technodrome, despite the supposed continuity with the cartoon series, was obliterated in practically every video game and Shredder either had some retro-mutagen gun or metamorphosed into Super Shredder.

This all really takes me back, but let me get to the crux of this reply. Although I scarcely acquired only a few back issues of the original Mirage TMNT comic book series, this wasn't until AFTER my eye's attention was caught by the gleaming beacon that is the cover of TMNT Adventures number 38. I wasn't aware, up until that point, that they made them into comic books. Of course, I feel stupid for admitting this when their origins were in fact commenced IN comic book form.

After this kismetic intervention of illustrated literature in the realm of hominoid, bipedal, reptilian, adolescent ninjas sporting bandanas the same colors as the light-sabers in Star Wars--minus Michelangelo's orange color--I was hooked. I wasn't familiar at all with any of the other characters, like the Mutanimals or Mr. Null, but I was content with just having the turtles. Additionally, the "United We Stand Divided We Fall Trilogy" didn't make much sense to me around this time, particularly due to my missing the crossover Mutanimal issues of (I think) five and six, but I enthusiastically sought out and purchased number 40. Okay, let's be truthful. We're of the same generation, meaning we were all most likely born in the early eighties. Our "mommies" or "daddies" did the purchasing.

I wasn't able to attain number 41, but I was subscribed by number 42. I received every single copy of the Archie series 42 and beyond. My interest in the comic book series waned as the obsession with turtles for me began fleeting. However, I managed to still add to my collection the last two issues, 71 and 72. Furthermore, I ambitiously made the tasking effort of claiming possession over all back issues pertaining to the series. I was close, but to no avail.

Chibikasai, you actually have one issue I was always dying to get my hands on--number 36, the first appearance of Verminator-X. Pwdesai, if you're honestly scanning the issues in their entirety, count me in on obtaining issues number 36 and 41, as well as the TMNT Adventures Special issues number 1 and 2.

Imagine my surprise when this series overtly mirrored the darker elements of its Mirage counterpart. Along the way, I had purchased for me the first Mirage TMNT volume, a black and white depiction explaining their origin and introducing their key antagonism, the Shredder. Apparently vanquished by the end of the novel, I didn't see anything more until TMNT Volumes III and IV, when the turtles return from some distant planet with the Triceratons and some silver-plated, slimmed-down, robotic version of Babyface from the Dick Tracy movie. It's briefly described how Splinter narrowly escaped death at the teeth of Baxter Stockman's Mousers and how these less campy Krang look-alike aliens (obviously the inspiration for the caricature later adapted for the cartoon series) were both responsible for the turtles' and Splinter's mutation and the transportation to a planet that's curiously inhabited by English-speaking "close relatives" of the Triceratop dinosaur family.

Even in the Mirage series, which seemingly got maybe a little too mature and weird for my taste with the co-mingled, sporadic glimpses I had via later issues, the turtles, who peculiarly all sport red bandanas in this version, are visited by someone from the future. What's her name? Renet? She donned the funky one-piece Sports Illustrated blue swimming suit with the equally bizarre clock-adorned headpiece and with a cape and assortment of doodads strung together. I know she later reemerged in an issue featuring the goat-legged, horned, demonic sorcerer's sister heading an all-out assault on the turtles, Casey Jones, and April O'Neil as revenge. Plus, there was some feudal Japan vagabonding that took place later in the series (perhaps the inspiration for the third TMNT movie).

I bring this up because Archie essentially did the same thing by having the turtles of the TMNT Adventures universe get paid a visit by future Don and Raph beginning with "The Future Shark Trilogy," which evolved into a leitmotif for the series, as the present cast of characters frequently interacted with the future protagonists. I'm not complaining; it made good reading and I've always been an avid aficionado of all material relating to time-travel. A few discrepancies consistently crept up in my mind, though, especially after eventually reading over all the Classic Digests they released.

Upon purchasing back issues for the Archie series, I realized that I actually already had the first few comic books of the series. Unbeknownst to me all this time, I was aware of the series in an unwitting sense. I filled in the missing gaps by gaining the Classic Digests and scouring around for ones not covered in the said anthologies.

Moving ahead, I was astounded by the last part of "The Black Hole Trilogy" when it's revealed that the Turnstone WAS the black hole all along. That was sheer genius, more so because of the tie-in with Sarnath, the mechanized entity with the two missing gem eyes we all know were in fact used for the time-slip generators. And the death of the Mutanimals really took me by surprise. Yes, I was quite taken aback at how mature the series was developing, what with the Mutanimal hell scene and Candace Fine in that slink, sexy, rather "revealing" black dress.

Anyway, back to the time-travel questions. Cudley the Cowlick (I know, it disturbed me a little, too, how he was really nothing more than a gargantuan decapitated cow head that traversed space and time) once brought the turtles a hundred years into a possible future. It turned out that this future IS their future. But as expressed in "The Terracide Trilogy," history recorded future Don and Raph assisting the Mutanimals in constructing their headquarters. And Shredder must've somehow returned to the past, because he reappeared in early issues, around--what?--number 11 or 12. If Shredder was abducted during the Eye of Sarnath turtle-shrinking incident, then that means he ought to no longer exist in the future. That is, unless it's what I think it is: the time loop theory. By the way, they never resolved HOW or IF Shredder returns to the past.

All of time--the past, present, and future--has already happened. In other words, you can't change anything because it's all happened already. This means that everything that the past and future turtles do and experience have already been done and are all predetermined. But then they directly contradict this in the aforementioned Mutanimal death trilogy. They explain it away that it was Mr. Null, as if his presence in and influence over time is outside our own, like some satanic manipulation. It suggests he's beyond the effects of time.

I believe the time loop theory applies here otherwise, since it did always bother me how the past turtles could be brought to the future without disappearing from the past (same problem occurs in Back to the Future Part II) and how the past turtles wouldn't remember any of this and plausibly make some changes to the normal time stream when the moments arrive (e.g., preventing Raph from losing his eye). It could be that this all was DESTINED to happen and is therefore inalterable.

I forgot what else I wanted to include, but this is already more lengthy content than I anticipated writing. May the legacy of the TMNT perpetuate!

Ahh...the Classics Digests. I loved those! They're what really got me into the Archie series, since they were easier to find in my area than the single issues. Sadly, they were lost years ago. Grr.
Issue 36 was the 1st app. of Verminator-X? Never knew that.
I'm actually surprised my copy has survived to the present day, since my mom brought it for me way back in '92. That means it's survived an eight month stay in Ohio, and 4 more moves since then. And it's still in VG condition. Wow...*none* of my other comics can boast that longitivity.

Anywho...Can anyone provide me with some really concise summaries of the Animus War, Moon Eyes Saga, or Cyber Samurai 5-Parter? I'm really curious about what happened, and I'm having a hard time finding the issues.
Thanks! :)

I'll ask again: what was the "Year of the Turtle" mini-series and what was this alleged "The Forever War" all regarding? All detailed information and available synopses would be highly appreciated.

Who's Mezcaal, future Raph's love interest and possible wife? Any relation to Ninjara, considering she closely resembles her?

Hitler's brain in the "Dreamland" five-part epic really was a cerebral nuisance to me. I mean, it irked me the perplexed logic about how the past Hitler's brain wasn't destroyed or severely damaged by the bullet to the head or the fact that the past Hitler's brain wouldn't remember failing in its attempt to catapult itself back into Berlin, Germany of the past.

The character of Kid Terra in the TMNT Adventures Archie comic book series was the closest we had to a Casey Jones in this bifurcated universe. Meanwhile, didn't Armaggon become the Archie series's version of the cartoon series's Baxter "The Fly" Stockman? I mean, Armaggon kept getting lost in time and space.

One thing exasperating about the Archie comic book series is how each "flavor of the month" alien is ousting one after another after another for the latest spotlight. Rather than recycling the same alien and perhaps constructing a solid continuity, whenever the writers ran out of ideas, they elected to introduce a NEW alien. The same triteness was incurred by the cartoon series. Instead of three-foot turtles, whatever became of the Neutrinos and Krang's Stone Warriors?

What is always the major setback to having time-travel scenarios and future versions of present characters, such as in the TMNT Adventures Archie comic book series, is the loss of suspense. Though entertaining, think about it, we know for certain the past (or relative to us, the present) turtles will never come to any harm because they're still around in the future (they must). Of course, these type of franchises regularly find a way out of this and conveniently and arbitrarily change their temporal mechanics dogma.

Shredder's real name is Oruko (I think) Saki. Isn't saki some Japanese beverage? Ha, Shred-Head's named after an ancient Japanese secret Energy Boost soft drink.

There were turtle toys matching the comic book characters, like Ace Duck (however much thinner and dressed up like a pilot as opposed to a wrestler), Man Ray, Slash, Merdude, Triceraton, that android, Tattoo, Wingnut and Screwloose, Wyrm, Mondo Gecko, Usagi Yojimbo, Panda "something," the Warrior Dragon, that cockroach mutant, Leatherhead, and Casey Jones. They didn't have Jagwar (heh, heh, named after a brand of cars) and Dreadmon, but they had Dirtbag and Groundchuck, as well as that Punk Frogs quad.

I stumbled across a garbage bag-sized sack in my closet today. It contains all the TMNT toys I scurried to get when I was younger. I really need to sell these things. However, I realized that they also made a Rat King action figure and that this character appears in both the Mirage and Archie comic book series.

I have the four original Playmates TMNT figurines. I wonder if these'll be worth anything someday. I also have these minuscule plastic, baby turtle-sized electroluminescent toys that, to the best of my recollection, came from those trash-can Playdo cup-like green ooze packages they sold for a while. I think I'll keep these, considering I enjoy all things holographic or electroluminescent.

I also have this 5th Anniversary TMNT "Leonardo" Limited Edition silver-ish statue. It's nothing more than a cheaply made trophy of a shimmering silver-plated Leonardo. However, I wouldn't mind finding some way of dislodging his swords from his hands to give to the original Leo figurine. I never understood why they always equipped the turtles with weapons colored light brown, especially for Raph and Leo.

One last thing: what is up with this sui generis "bimbo" April O'Neil figurine? It has black puffy hair and is armed with cosmetic weapons, like--I kid you not--lipstick nunchucks and a compact-mirror ninja star. This had to be some inside joke, but it surprises me that Playmates actually released this thing to young kids.

Once more back to the Archie series and normal sized posts

what was with Null? I know he wanted to kill everything but why'd he first appear as a business man? And how did he hook up with Magna?

Yes, It was! Creepy, too...

Y'know, the amount of different religions represented in TMNTA really got me to wondering....
What are you guys' thoughts about all that?

they must have been pretty open minded, especially when no religion really helped prevent the grim outcome in the future stories...

I contacted Archie Comics, asking about Chris Allan. They said they lost track of him years ago, and are unaware of any other works he's done besided TMNT and Sonic :(

scanning comics no longer in production (like the archie series) might be OK, but this...these Volume 4 scans should be removed....

and atleast provide a statement granting all rights to Mirage. Other than that, nice work!!!

Well I think it's ok aslomg the Volume 4 scans are onlu in IRC. In there so small group of people can get them that It doesn't affect the sales. Well a true fan is never satisfied with scans.

Well a true fan is never satisfied with scans.I have some vol4 scans which I found on Direct Connect. I only buy new american comics on very special occasions (I bought the Transformers G1 series, and planning on buying JLAvengers when it comes out), since it's becomes too expensive to having every issue mailed from the store I buy TPBs from once in a while (no comic store even close to where I live...). But I will buy the vol4 TPBs as soon as they are released, of course! :)

Well Of course there are people who don't have the money, But If they would get shared in a webpage, Some people who could afford them would just start to download scans.

As for the old comic, I don't think that there is nothing wrong in sharing them. They are never going to be printed again.

I'm an Italian State Policeman (please read my post in Introduction forum).

I know that scan and print old book (comics, books, newspapers...) (10 years older or more) isn't illegal.

One of my fav "can't belive it" moments was in issue 56, when Candy looks into Null's eyes and sees the Mutanimals in Hell. I'd never seen anything like that in a "kid's" comic before or since.

OMIGOD! The Mutanimals are in HELL??? :o :o
Thats awful! What the hell, no pun intended, did they do to end up there? I thought they were the good guys?

::looks at covers on website:: I know I have issues #1, #6, #8, #10 & a few other ones that I got from a friend of mine& don't remember the names of. I gotta go up in my attic now, find out which Archie TMNT books I DO have exactly.

This comic series seems really, really cool! I guess I stopped buying them when it got even cooler,.

Mondo_Gecko was telling me about the "Uncanny Trio" of mutants from issue #27 (the mutant Cat, Owl & Crow) & now I wish I bought those issues,.

Demmit, why do I always miss out on all the cool stuff?? :-?

Well, just dug out my old TMNTA comics. I have Issue #'s: 1,6,8,10,13 (2 copies of #13 for some odd reason), & #30. I also have the Mighty Mutanimals #'s 3 & 9, The Year of the Turtle- Part #2, The TMNT Meet Archie & some Archie TMNTA comic book that collects Issue #1 & #2 into one big comic book. It's not that bad, as it has issue #2 in it (which I don't got).

a) The Art: What was your favorite art period? Mine was those from around the "4 Horsemen/Mutanimals" Saga (around issue 38 I think?) through the end. Speaking of, does anyone know the name of this penciller and what other works he/she's done?

Chris Allan has a web site but I don't remember the url and I tried searching and nothing came up, but I know I found it one time.

I don't know if he's done anything else.

It would be great if they got those guys to do a new mini series or something.

b) The Cancellation: Does anyone know if any formal ending was given to this series? After the last real issue, there were two issues called "The Early Years", and it ended there. Anything after that to conclude the adventures of the TMNTA characters? (And I don't mean the new Mirage series).

Not that I know of. Archie did some unrelated and horrible mini series after the last issue of Adventures. I didn't buy it because the art was so horrible.

c) Who else loved the future stuff? Yknow, the future shark trilogy, the death of the mutanimals, the Cyber Turtles, etc?

Was the shark named Armagon? The future stuff was cool. I wish I still had them.

d) Have any memorabilia ever been produced based on the likeness in the era I mentioned above, the art from 38 onward?

I don't know. There was so much Turtles stuff I wouldn't be surprised but I can't think of anything offhand. I think some of the card sets had Archie covers?

I stopped reading after "Terracide" because I was pissed of that they killed the Mutinamals. To me the Turnstone saga will always be the crown jewel of the Archie series. And I always wished that the cartoon would experment with alternate costumes for Raph the way the Archie comic did.
Dark-suit Raphael kicked so much @$$!
