Not sure if this is legit, but Sega is mum on it and won't deny it. According to this they are planning a new handheld to emulate their old consoles and play mp3's and dvix, mpeg, ect.
It wouldn't be mass market and their new stuff would still go to the leading handhelds. I don't know what to make of this. I really don't.

I want to have sex with it.

I sure hope this turns out to be true... This could end up being an even better handheld than the Nomad! :o

Nomad > All.
It's a fact of life. Something we must come to accept.
Except it's battery life...

I know I'd buy it. Sega games, Dvix decoding, 550Mhz CPU. Sounds awesome in every way.
Either way, I like it.
Sega's like the little brother of Nintendo, so it's all good.:D

Dosen't look very portable, though, with those handles on the bottom.
Aside from that it looks good.

Anyone mind translating it?Sure...
Live from Tokyo and thanks to a source close to the group that has given us the information:
Sega prepares its grand return to the world of consoles with a portable console.
At the moment, it's called the Sega Hedgehog, this new console is scheduled for release at the end of 2007.
A console to flip open (as in, with a cover, like a cellphone), it is equipped with a 566MhZ Samsung processor, a NVIDIA 3D graphic accellerator with 128 bits, evolved from the chipset of a GeForce 3D 4500 that has been found inside a Gizmondo, 128MB RAM and a 11cm (4.33 inches) which is able to produce a resolution of 640X360.
Also included are the classics: Analog joystick, four buttons and two triggers (as in Z-trigger on the N64), it offers also a touchpad and three buttons similar to a touchpad on a laptop. It seems that the directional pad has been abandoned, but we're not sure about that.
The games will be on cartridges. We don't know more about that at the moment. An USB-port will enable the Hedgehog to connect to a wide variety of peripherals, from a printer to a joystick to a scanner. Furthermore, this USB-port suggests that there will be an online service for downloading games, via a PC.
It will accept both Compact Flash cards and SD Cards.
Sega is working on the possibility of enabling the hedgehog to read the DIVX-Format. Even better, a compatibility with Master System games, Saturn and Dreamcast is planned without more detail on how it will work (technically).
Still according to our source, the main worry Sega faces at the moment is the compatibility of the hardware with the old games as well as the problems in terms of durability (It was talked about 3 hours of playing a game or watching a movie, which is of course not enough). Sega is working on optimizing the screen of the console before making it "less appetizing".
And last but not least, we have a design drawing of the console. Note that it looks a lot like the DreamCast-controller...
We are thankful for Sega France for their support in this "scoop"-operation.

If there are any errors, feel free to correct them, but I think I got the most important things across. I might not have hit every word on the spot, but the general meaning is up there.

Thanks for the translation.
Just to play devil's advocate, the article is from April 2nd and I've heard rumours of this being confirmed as a fake. That doesn't have to mean anything, but I wouldn't get my hopes up just yet.

I have no idea if I'll be gettin' this cuz I'm tryin' to get a Genesis cuz a friend of my dad's gave me about twenty Genesis games, but I don't have the system. The one at my local comics shop is forty bucks and I've been wanting to get one for quite a while. My point is, I find it kind of awkward that Sega is gonna release a handheld when I'm gonna get a Genesis that will probably have the games I have donwloadable for the handheld. One good thing is that I have a Dreamcast and its somehow compatiable with this handheld. I dunno how it'll work but, I'll just have to wait and see.
Looks like I learned some new French vocabulary today. Anarky, I'm sure my French teacher would be proud on the accuracy of your translation if she saw it. Figured I'd throw that out to ya.

It's probably an April Fool's joke. Did anyone bother translating the rest of the site to see if there was something like "I hope you all enjoyed our April Fool's Joke!"
Assuming they have it over in France.....

Hahahaha. Damn, and I thought it would take longer for you to find out.
Poisson d'avril! (http://www.inpactvirtuel.com/news/Sega-Console-5643-SEGA-NE-PREPARE-RIEN-DU-TOUT-COMME-CONSOLE-.htm)
Translation:
Well, did you like our april's fool-prank?
Ah, well, risking to dissappoint you all, we have to announce that Sega does not plan on releasing a new console. It wasn't an accident that we released it around now...
We didn't want to break the tradition of april's fools but we didn't feel like violence against our next of kin either, so we decided to create a real good prank. OK, the big majority of you didn't fall for it, proving that our community is clever enough to not blindly believe everything they're told. More power to you!
The drawing of the console was made by our friend Pete Boule who handles his pens like a paddle to teach his kids a lesson.
But here's the trick: Why did we release this news on the 31st of march at 1701 hours? Because it's 0001 hours in Tokyo then, and they were already on the first of april... That's why the news began with "Live from Tokyo".
Well yes, it's really stupid. Yes, it's almost a crime... but what do you expect, hmm? We're all a big mess. (Note: Translation might not be accurate)
But one thing remains, more than a prank, you can see it as a cry from the bottom of our hearts: Sega, come baaaaaaaaack!
Last but not least, here's the result: We were wrong to underestimate your analyzing skills and you finding out pranks. We promise to improve ourselves to ... we're sorry ... set you a trap!
And to apologize, we begin easter by crucifying Nico (Note: presumably a staff-member). Not because he resembles the messiah (he's more like Judas), but because, uhm... we don't like him. At all.
Et pour se faire pardonner, on commence dès Pâques en crucifiant Nico. Pas parce qu'il ressemble au Messie (il a plutôt une attitude de Judas) mais simplement parce que, euh... parce qu'on ne l'aime pas. Du tout. Piece of animal ****, go away!

That's all, folks!

Anarky, your translation got me good. :ohwell: I almost forgot about Day of the Fish or le jour de poisson which is how the French celebrate April Fool's Day. I'll try to look for that note on an article that indicates whether or not its an April Fool's joke that gets printed in April especially if it's in French, so that way I won't be fooled. They made it sound pretty beliveable though.
