The Technodrome Chat! - Improved!

You probably all know about the unofficial IRC channel (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?p=377596#post377596) where some of the forum regulars hang out and talk. Now, I know what most of you are thinking - this IRC stuff is so confusing, I have no idea of IRC networks, I don't want to install an IRC client and so on. But, there is a soltion :)

And so, I give you The Web-Based IRC client (http://www.16bit.net/dromeirc/)! It will connect you and let you chat in #TheTechnodrome IRC channel directly from your browser and without the need of installing or doing anything. Yes, I know it's too good to be true, but it is ;) Just click the link.

The only thing required for it to run is Java, but most systems have it installed anyway nowadays, so I doubt any of you will have problems.

When you join, your nickname will be NinjaTurtle with some random number. It will be a good idea to change your nickname, so others know who they're talking to. You can use the /nick your_nickname command or the Change nick field in the bottom right corner of the IRC client.

And finally, remember that the IRC channel is in no way associated with The Technodrome forum administration. In case of problems or questions, please, contact the IRC channel operator(s).

This is not a new chatroom, but merely another way of accessing the IRC-channel we set up a long time ago. People who use mIRC, Sysreset or Chatzilla, can still use that, it doesn't make much of a difference.

Anyways, please bookmark the link and appear every now and then. Right now, the "european shift" is waiting.

I get this message when I try to connect - "Unable to connect : java.net.SocketException : Software caused connection abort: connect" - I think it's probably something to do w/ my firewall settings. I'll have to check it out when I have more time.

To both of you - either it's your firewall settings or some other local settings, either the IRC servers were down or under maintnance when you tried. I'd suggest you try again later and if the problem still occurs, then tweak your firewalls.

As for Java, you got the applet loaded and showing you a message, which means that Java is installed and working.

Jeez... so I got me some new computer parts, as in new CPU and new mainboard. Hey, I had to do it sometime, because my old stuff was seven years old and slowly dying. So now I have a 2.66 GHZ dual core CPU and some new mainboard with lots of stuff the old one didn't have.

Can't say I have, but if there is an issue, I am afraid that it lies with the web interface, not the chat itself. But even when I try to use the web interface it works fine for me.

You could always try the oldschool-version and access the channel with an IRC-client. I personally recommend UPP (http://upp.monkey-pirate.com/), because it's the most comfortable client to use. Instructions on how to get to the channel can be found here (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showpost.php?p=377596&postcount=188). Just substitute MIRC with UPP and you're good to go.

So that there's no confusion, here's the updated IRC Tutorial for those who want to join us via an IRC-Client. This tutorial will lead you to the same place the web client does. I locked the other thread to avoid confusion with two threads.

Downloading and installing mIRC
go to Sysreset.com (http://www.sysreset.com/) and download the full installation pack and the upgrade.
Install the program
Run the installed program
Fill in your personal details and click OK
The window will close and a grey “Favorites”-box may or may not appear appear. If it doesn't, just ignore all the lines dealing with it.

Joining servers and channels

Cancel that “Favorites”-box
Type /server irc.irchighway.net at the bottom of the big white window you see and press “Enter”.
A lot of writing will appear. Don’t pay attention to that.
The favorites-window will appear again. Cancel that again
Again, at the bottom of the big white window (where all the writing appeared), write /join #thetechnodrome and press enter
Now you’re on our channel.
Add our channel to your favorites, so that you don’t have to go through all this next time you join. Or add it to Autojoin. We'll be happy to guide you through this in the channel.

Basic commands on the channel
/me: Everything following that is an emotion like *shrugs*
/nick followed by your new nickname lets you change your nickname

Downloading on IRC
Type !list
A lot of writing will appear. Look out for the parts starting with /CTCP
Copypaste one of those CTCP-triggers. NOTE: The text is highlighted, you just don't see the highlighting.
Click "accept"
Use IRC-commands to navigate through the folders.

IRC-commands
dir:Shows you the content of a folder (folders are marked by not having a file extension and their names are written in CAPS)
cd: followed by a foldername takes you into that folder
cd..: takes you back one folder
get: followed by a filename (sans the filesize) starts the download for the file you requested.

The Fully Automated Awesomeness (TM)!

Basically, what it does is eliminate all the restrictions I unfortunately had to make with the web client and removes all the tech-babble of regular IRC. Basically, what I did was automate the entire IRC and customized it for our needs. It's easier than ever.

Here's what you have to do:
Download this file and unzip it (http://rapidshare.com/files/45269358/DromeSysreset.zip)
Run Mirc.exe from the folder you got.
Enter false e-mail and real name
Enter nickname and alternate nickname
Click "Connect to server"
And the best part is: Points 3 and 4 are once only things. So in the future, you just need to run MIRC.exe. Isn't that cool?

So try it and join the fun on #TheTechnodrome!

I did, he said he's not in charge anymore. Like I said, the most offensive thing I can think of was when I would pop in looking for people. When no one was around, I would just do the dice roll thing that's in there a couple of times just to mess around then leave.

I'm not really sure about what I'm sayin but in all the points, that would be easier for every dromer and that could be cool & avoid some useless fights on the threads.

Yes, that's what I meant by unofficial. But I don't think it would be a good idea to make it official since we would need to have at least one mod in there at all times, which is not something we could realistically do. And about the fights, I think there's a chance it might make them worse, since people would be less likely to stop and think about what they're saying in a chat room as opposed to on the forums.
