View Full Version : I wish RARE could still make 007 games

It sucks that EA makes 007 games and not RARE. Goldeneye on N64 was soo much fun to play and it had great, and I mean GREAT re-play value. Now it seems that Activision is going to be making 007 games now. I can only hope they do a good job.
Now, I will say that I love EA's "Everything or Nothing" and "From Russia with Love" games. Goldeneye: 007 was the best though.

So very true. To be honest... GoldenEye was probably the only FPS shooter that I truly loved.

Just a few problems there, buddy. Firstly, GoldenEye was amazing for it's time, but doesn't hold a candle to the FPS's of today. It was amazing because it was the first FPS to come to consoles and make sense. It worked, and flawlessly so. For a lot of us console gamers, we hadn't had the opportunity to run around in a 3d environment, shooting friends before. This was our first true FPS experience, that's why it stands out so much. Have you attempted to go back and play GoldenEye in the last 5 years? It has age, and it's not one of the classics that aged well.
Where I'm going with this is that if Rare still made 007 games, they'd be no better than the ones made by EA or the up-coming ones made by Activision. The FPS experience has lost the luster that console gamers once experienced with GoldenEye. We're spoiled with FPS's on consoles now. It's not the same as it was back in 96. In fact, if Rare made 007 games, they'd probably be as bland and mediocre and PDZ is on the 360.

How's Perfect Dark Zero? That's basically what the game would be.

It would be a jittery mess, with a horrible multiplayer mode and and the worst hit detection and controls of any Xbox FPS ever.

Hmm.... I see your point. Goldeneye is still one of my favorite 007 games though.
Offtopic: What FPS games do you guys reccomend? So far here's what I have played:
1. Goldeneye 007 N64
2. Goldeneye Rouge Agent GameCube
3. Time Spliters 2 GameCube
4. Turok 1 N64
5. Turok 2 N64
6. Turok Evolution GameCube
7. Duke Nukem N64
8. Star Wars Shadows of the Empire N64 (Doesn't really count as a FPS in alot of ways though)
9. Perfect Dark Zero XBox 360
10. Call of Duty 2 XBox 360 Demo
11. Time Shift XBox 360 Demo
12. King Kong GameCube

Yeah, PDZero is basically Goldeneye 360. Same engine, and it shows. I just recently spent some time with Halo 2 and it showed how sh*tty PDZero is. I LOVE the music, but that apprently is the only thing Rare is still good at. I guess we can all see that Nintendo sold them for a reason and we were b*tching about nothing.
If Rare made 007 games, they would still suck. Imagine mapping the C-buttons from goldeneye to the 360's second stick and making it VERY twitchy. Now add some pathetic hit direction and random head shots. There's PDZero for ya'.

1. Goldeneye 007 N64
2. Goldeneye Rouge Agent GameCube
3. Time Spliters 2 GameCube
4. Turok 1 N64
5. Turok 2 N64
6. Turok Evolution GameCube
7. Duke Nukem N64
8. Star Wars Shadows of the Empire N64 (Doesn't really count as a FPS in alot of ways though)
9. Perfect Dark Zero XBox 360
10. Call of Duty 2 XBox 360 Demo
11. Time Shift XBox 360 Demo
12. King Kong GameCube
Hmmm... I don't see Halo or Halo2 on that list... :o
But... I didn't find Golden Eye to be 'best' FPS for a console. Halo takes that title. Hands down. I think Perfect Dark for 64 was the best FPS for that system. I uno know.. . I'll make a list as well! :D
Offtopic... again :)
1. Halo
2. Halo2
3. Unreal Tournament: GoTY (PC)
4. Turok
5. Perfect Dark uno and Zero.
6. Call of Duty 2(360)
7. Timeplitters (ps2.... when it first came out, it pwned.)

I never bought an XBox1 and my XBox 360 doesn't have a hard drive. I want to play Halo very much though. Hopefully this summer I will buy a hard drive and Halo. Thanks for the list of good FPS you reccomended.

Two words... Metroid. Prime.
While not a standard FPS, you're still in first person, and you still shoot the **** out of anything that moves.
Dr. Doom

While that is true, it's still hard to classify that as an FPS in the non literal sense.

I know, I know... but it blows most of those other games completely out of the water.

Ugh. I can't stand Metroid Prime. It's also nowhere near being a FPS, more of a FPA game with shooter elements.
And Turtle in the Shell, once again another case for not buying a core console. A 360 with no hard drive isn't a 360 at all. BTW, you haven't played a console shooter until you've played Halo 2.

Honestly, I've played Halo 1 and 2 single player and multiplayer and honestly I find nothing that great about either of them. Given they're not bad games but I don't see anything outstanding about them. Goldeneye for N64 on the other hand had me addicted in seconds. Then came Perfect Dark for N64 which I though was even better. My only problem in Goldeneye was multiplayer had virtually no customization. There were only the set weapon sets that you could use and not many choices when it came to limits. The sets weren't that great either. I mean if you chose Golden Gun, what was possibly going to stand up against the Golden Gun? If you're good at strafing you can probably get a kill but the person only has to be lucky once and it takes awhile to kill the person with the other weapons offered to you. Also in automatics, nothing is going to stand up against the D5K. It does more far more damage than the other guns and is rapid fire. Perfect Dark on the other hand had almost unlimited customization as well as bots you could battle against. Honestly, I've never played Perfect Dark Zero but I was very saddened when my friend told me it tried to be Halo in many ways.

Well, your friend is wrong. PDZ doesn't try to be Halo at all. It would be better of if it HAD, actually. It falls terribly short of even coming close to Halo. And, once again, like I've said, go back and play Goldeneye it's virtually unplayable now.

I have Metroid Prime 1 & 2. I just forgot to mention them. I think they are great games, I haven't played the 2nd game that much though.
I'm going to buy a 360 Harddrive this month, along with Halo and Star Wars KOTOR. If I beat Halo and Star Wars KOTOR, I will buy the sequels.
Peanut
06-08-2006, 10:47 AM
The first Halo turns to complete trash after the first 2 levels, so be warned. Halo 2 might be your better bet, even though you'll probably be lost story-wise. KOTOR on the other hand, is amazing. Both of them.

Thanks for the advice.

Toonami Tom

I'm sure I will miss out on the 1st games story if I play Halo 2 first. Maybe I should buy Halo 1 first then? I'm confussed. Do I go with story or gameplay? Hmm....
TheGreenMagic
06-08-2006, 11:39 AM
Honestly, I'd go with gameplay over story when it comes to Halo. Now, if this were an MGS game I'd have a different stance, but that's a whole 'nother thing all together.
Halo multiplayer is generally a fun experience. Granted, I found using Warthogs in a demolition derby more worthwhile than anything else, but...

There aren't any MP bots, no.
And I actually love the story of Halo, mostly thanks to the offical books based on the game, but the story of the first Halo is pretty important to the overall arc. If you decided to buy Halo 2, just ask me and I'll give you a basic breakdown of the story from the first Halo.

I read the story information in the Dr. Doom's link. I'm not sure I really understand it though.
This is what I get out of it:
Master Chief is a cyborg super soldier. Him and a team are flying around space and are attacked by aliens called the Covenant. They crash land on a space station called Halo that orbits a planet. Master Chief battles aliens in the space station, trying to make his way to the control room. He finds out that the Covenant have these weird zombies called the Flood. They accidently get loose. Master Chief is told by a computer program that Halo has a built in super weapon that will kill the flood. He activates it. He then realizes it will kill all of humanity. He then shuts it down. The humans defeat the Covenant.

I have great memories of GoldenEye 007, and it is my understanding that it is generally considered a milestone in the first-person shooter genre. Great movie, great game -- too bad Tomorrow Never Dies (both the movie and the game) didn't live up to expectations.
Incidentally, the first few PS2 Bond games (I forget the names) were average, at best. Everything or Nothing was the first good Bond game in nearly ten years -- I absolutely loved everything about it. In fact, it almost seemed made just for me, considering that A View to a Kill is my favourite 007 movie (and the villain in the game is the protegé of Max Zorin), that Jaws was one of my favourite characters, and that I hold a particular interest in Russia when it comes to movies and games.
(Rocky IV = masterpiece.)

TitS (Turtle in the Shell),
I would buy Halo one and two if I were you. I personally liked one's story line a bit more... it's really fun. 2 is good, as well. I just didn;t like playing as the Cov.... BUT - - it IS interesting to see how both sides deal with the same thing...
And SW: KOTOR.... so addictive....... my fave SW game yet! :D
heh... it says 'tits'.... lol

You've got it pretty much right. Just to fill you in on some stuff
...
The humans and Covenant are at war, and the Covenant are on a journey to discover more about The Forerunners, an ancient race they consider to be "gods". Basically, Halo is a huge ring with a fake atmosphere built by the Forerunners. The Covenant see it as a sacrad relic left by the gods. The humans don't know what it is.
The Piller of Autumn, which is the ship Master Chief is on at the beginning of Halo, is a human vessel that just barely escaped the destruction of Reach, the second largest human planet, dwarfed only by Earth itself. The PoA follows a jumping Covenant ship and they end up on Halo.
Everyone crashes on it, and a bunch of sh*t goes down on Halo's surface. Among all of this the Covenant are searching for keys to unlocking the power of the Forerunners and Halo. They end up stumbling upon something they think is a great weapon, but turns out to be The Flood, a Forerunner experiment gone terribly wrong. The Flood are essentially little pods that kill and then inhabit and re-animate a body. This ends up causing problems for both the humans stuck on Halo and the Covenant forces on them. The Covenant are still pretty much of the belief that Halo holds great power, despite the Flood.
The humans follow some leads and end up finding the place where the Flood were released. The group sent to find out what was going on never came back, so they sent in Master Chief. He has this big fight, then ends up getting transported by an "oracle" as the Covenant call them, named 343Guiltyspark, who's like a little floating eyeball of metal. He thinks MC is a "reclaimer" and he's the one who can activate Halo and stop the Flood. What MC ends up finding out from Cortana, his personal AI, is that Halo is a weapon of mass-destruction, and the activation of it will destroy the Flood, but only by destroying it's source of food, which is all other life. So, of course, MC takes offense to this and he and Cortana go all over Halo trying to stop this madness from happening.
Basically, he destroys Halo, which pisses off the Covenant. This doesn't stop the Covenant, though. Not in the least. The war still goes on, this was just a small part of it that kind of threw a wrench into their plans.

I bought a harddrive for my XBox 360, Halo 1, and Star Wars KOTOR today. Both games are great, Halo is SWEET!:) After I beat Halo 1, which I hope doesn't happen right away since I just bought it, I will buy Halo 2. How long does it typically take to beat Halo 1? How many hours?

It'll take you awhile. Not overly long, but it'll be long enough. I hope you can hold out through the complete sh*t that is "The Library", probably one of the worst levels in a FPS ever.

I got through The Library level today. That level is a real b*tch! I hate those f***ing Flood! They are everywhere! Everywhere! I'm now in the level where I have to walk into the energy cores to destroy them. Sometimes it's just endless shooting. I went completely trigger happy in the level I'm in now.
It's awesome to fly the Banshee. It is my 2nd favorite vehicle, my 1st favorite is the Warthog.
This is the most intense FPS I have ever played. It is also one of the best games I have ever played.:)
Edit: I just wanted to add that it's funny that I found a few Grunts that were sleeping. Sometimes I try to avoid them, so as to not wake them up. If I'm really into the battle and intense though, I just bash them with my weapon or shoot them.
It also really stands out when I entered a room one of the Grunts was walking by and I blew him away with my shotgun.
The cloaking device is sweet, it's just like the Predator movies.

I just finished the final level of Halo about 2 hours ago. I started playing this past Saturday night, so it took me about 2 and a half to 3 days. I spent hours playing today. I plan on buying Halo 2 this week.:)
Captain Keys.... sucks to be him.
Those black armor Elites were tough. The game pretty much ended where it began, on the Pillar of Autumn. I had alot of crashes in the last level racing in the Warthog. One time the vehicle rolled over and killed Master Chief.:o I liked the ending cut scene. After the credits, was that the little blue droid orb flying away? The droid that helps you in the library level, and then turns against you after that. It looked like him.
