You just can't beat the old classics.

Since being in college, I have had the fortunate privilege of being able to play games other than what is on Nintendo and Super Nintendo. Kids in college have things like:

Sega
Nintendo 64
XBox
Playstation
Playstation II
Atari
Whatever else I'm not thinking of!

But, as technologically advanced as all these games are, they're just not as fun as the games for Nintendo and Super Nintendo. Call me old school, but I love the Mario Brothers games, the Ninja Turtles games, and stuff of that sort. I could play Mario Brothers 3 for Nintendo and Super Mario Brothers for the Super Nintendo until I'm blue in the face and never tire of it.

Those games, along with the Ninja Turtles games, were so simple. That was part of the appeal. You only had two buttons: jump and kick. Nowadays, you have to press about a 23-button combination just to get your video game character to walk across the screen. Whatever happened to pushing the keypad to the right or left?

The games of today are too complicated. Enhanced graphics does not make a better game. My friends and I much prefer the simpler games of Mario and Ninja Turtles. My friends and I much prefer the games when all you had to worry about was rescuing Princess Toadstool or rescuing April O'Neil.

I'd take Nintendo and Super Nintendo over all this high-tech gadgetry any day.

RIGHT ON DUDE!!!!!!!!! I agree with you 100%!!!
ne games will never compare to the original 4 Mario games. especially Marios 1 and 3, the greatest games of all time.
As powerful as the systems are and with all the highly complex games, they can never touch the incredible joy you get playing the original Mario.

Well, good opinion, but time changes...

I did like the 2 button only thing, but it was nice that SNES gave you 4 (6 including Right and Left) nice buttons and the genesis 6, but any more and the game just isn't fun to play. Sidescrollers were great, the levels could be longer because there was no moving to the side and stuff, it was a good challenge too.

A great invention was the Game Genie, a wonderful way to make your games more fun brought to you by Galoob. Nintendo hated this, because they thought that it would make the games easier and less fun, and have no replay value...boy were they fooled! The games were more fun to play because the amazing thing with game genie was that you could make up a code and it could have a good effect on the game, some of them were so funny, i just loved fooling around with that thing. To this day, I still make up codes and stuff, just to see how funny it looks...This new GameShark is so crappy, they just give you a set of codes and that's it, it makes the games less fun.

I've had a Sega for years, and I'm still in grade school

Or do you mean modern stuff like the Dreamcast?

Anywho, you took the words right out of my mouth NTCF! I couldn't have rephrased it any better. Boy, and I never thought the day would come when I'd be saying this, but for once I don't like this new stuff. I'm starting to sound like my grandpa for criminy's sake!

Yea, try thinking to when you are a grandpa and wonder what console gaming will be like....it creeps me out :o

The SNES was, and still is in my opinion, the best system ever. Yet, I could still settle down and play some Sonic games for the Genesis. :)

I agree, the games were better to those old consoles. I also hold SMB 3 as the best game there is; having everything I want from a game. But I have to say that I liked SMB 2 a lot more than SMB 1, very funny design, me thinks.
I could go on praising the Mario games (all the games, cart, party) for years, yet I also want to point out those other games who made me the die-hard Nintendo geek I am (still, I'm not a fanboy... ugh!).

Life Force: Salamander (You have to play this game)
Donkey Kong Country
Ice Hockey
Zelda: A link to the past

Then we have those great games released to the 64... F-Zero X (SNES version cant match in any way, except originality), Zelda: OoT, Star Fox 64 (Even though it's far easier than the older version, its better) and some others.
But yes, the games we're better before.

By the way, am I the only one who simply can't stand Pokémon anymore?

you still can move you guy along the screen using left and right. and theres not 23 buttons

The older games were a lot harder than the games of today. All the games have been dummied down, you no longer have to run through levels because of the dreaded "timer", and there are no longer those giant pits of doom.

Graphics over gameplay is now the theme nowadays... That, and the fact that every game has to kill someone in it for immature kids and teenagers to deem it "cool"... Damn, I miss the days of SMB3 and the SNES vs Genesis.

Yea, I loved those days...The great thing about the whole SNES vs Genesis vs neo geo vs turbo grudge was that both Genesis and SNES were awesome systems so it didn't matter to me cuz i had em both...when it was N64 vs Playstation vs Saturn, they were all really crappy systems, so it was no fun...Saturn was hardly a change from Sega CD so I liked Sega CD more...

And they were a hell of a lot harder...there were no hit pts and crap...you got 3-5 lives, 3 continues and that was it, most times you got hit once and that was your life, lol.... you were actually challenged...now it is oooh lets explore the 3d world and its graphics! And then points actually counted towards something rewarding...such as lives and stuff...now few games even use points and the ones who do it is only to get a high score...

Oh well....

I think you're being a little unfair to both Nintendo 64 and Playstation, Tokka (Can't speak for Saturn, as I've never played it).
There are some very good games to both consoles, especially Nintendo 64 (Atleast if you have the same taste as I). I stated a few, and those are just great, me thinks.

SNES was and most likely will be the best system ever created, but you need to listen to yourselves. There are tons of games these days I'd rather play over the old stuff. Now people will probably start calling me a kid and that I never knew what it was like to play NES and what not, but this is a kid who beat Super Mario Bros. when he was 2 years old. Sure there are some classics on the old school systems but there are plenty of good games out now as well. Personally I'm more into the new stuff, but that doesn't mean I would give it all up to play a new side-scrolling Super Mario Bros. game on my SNES....wait....I like the old stuff better too....nevermind... :D

Well, yes, there are games out now that I'd definately rather play than the old ones. I'd rather play Super Monkey Ball than the old Marble madness, MK Deadly Alliance instead of MK1, etc...

I really hate a lot of the new games that have been old games before, just now they are 3-d and have crappy sound, lol.

I say there should be some company that decides to make a console that is really advanced but still makes 2-d games, I am sure there are a lot of old school gamers that would buy them, plus they would monopolize the 2-d market, lol... They could do good with 2-d games that have a 3-d background...I love those games...Anyone agree that there should be a new console for 2-d gaming?

Deepflame
01-05-2003, 02:57 PM
I don't see any need for that. Neither would I buy it just because of the 2-D graphics.

3-D games may be great games, just as the 2-D ones. It's not the 3-D that makes games less good than earlier, neither is it the rest of the graphics.
It all comes down to the idea and design, which strangely have decreased in quality these recent years.

"I really hate a lot of the new games that have been old games before, just now they are 3-d and have crappy sound, lol."

Please tell me a few, gotta know if there's any game I have to defend :D

Kinda strange actually, Threads like these are the only ones I post on, and this is a TMNT forum! rofl.

I remember when my sister and I first got our Nintendo. It came with the first Super Mario Brothers game already included. We played it and played it and played it. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, we had defeated Bowser at the end of the castle and saved the Mushroom Princess. We had beaten the game! We were the kings of the world, baby!

That is, until the screen changed and we discovered that there was more than one level.

Imagine our surprise when there ended up being eight levels altogether!

"Aim for the open space between those buildings!"
"Don't you just hate a backseat blimp driver?"

Those were great memories, except there were 32 levels, 8 worlds with 4 sublevels each...LOL

Anyway, games that have gotten worse BECAUSE of 3-d....Mario series, Sonic series, megaman series, ugh, i can go on and on....

3d isn't that bad, that's why i just like 3-d background...but when a whole game is in 3d, I just don't like it...if a game is going to be in 3d make start the whole series in 3d, don't go ruining other perfectly good series...

LOL, i still like my idea for a new console....that would be great, maybe Sega should have done that... :)

I knew it :)
I have to defend the Mario series, cant defend the others, haven't played them in their true 3-D form. Well, I can't defend 100%, Sunshine certainly was a dissapointment in some ways. But why does that have to be the 3-D's fault?
But that concerns only Sunshine, SM 64 is a very good game; it has the "Mario" feeling. Its completely worthy of a place amongst the other Mario games.

By the way; is there a 3-D Megaman? I've heard of it, but I'm not sure.

Tokka-B
01-05-2003, 06:53 PM
Yes, it was for Playstation, they made so many megaman games for that system...the 3-d ones were legends series i think, but then if you want a taste of how 3-d turns a good game crappy, play Megaman 64, LOL!.

Mario 64 was bad for mario, I haven't played sunshine yet though... I'd rather stick to mario party, that is a fun game...

The sonic adventures are such crap...the music is such garbage, they got a stupid band to do there own music instead of actually using instruments to make their own toons...

Mega Man 64 is essentially Mega Man Legends for PSX. Mega Man Legends 2 was a much better game. BTW I don't know what you're begining to talk about tokka. Mario 64 was bad for the series? I suppose LoZ:OoT was bad for the Legend of Zelda series too right?

How many times do i have to say I never played a Zelda game???

Anyway, Mario 64 just served no purpose...I mean, was the object to get all the stars or to beat bowser or what??? I mean, there was no level order or anything, I just didn't see the point...whatever

Karpo_007
01-06-2003, 02:05 PM
Well It was a good game, maybe it didn't have a good story behind it, but mario games never do. It's about game play. And it was great.

Oh my god! That's the best reason for a game not being good I've heard for years! I'm totally on your side now, Tokka. <not>

The purpose, in nearly all Mario's adventures, have been to save the Mushroom kingdom from Bowser/Koopa/whatever, and that's usually it.
So that doesn't make SM 64 different from the others concerning that point, right?
Objective one: Beat Bowser
Objectvie two (only if you found Ob.1 not too challenging): Find all the stars.
Fully understandable, yes.

And the freedom to chose level freely was very good, I don't see anything wrong with that.

I don't know...some of the gameplay was a bit shaky...They were clearly experimenting with 3-d with this game, having no intention on making it quality, since only the name won it big bucks, lol

Your being biased by saying that, because I don't think any PS or Sega fans would think that mario 64 was a good game...plus, it was only considered good because it was the only game that was out for the N64 at its time. Plus, there are much better games than Mario 64...
