Ever since my wife bought me an MP3 player for Christmas, I've been addicted to downloading MP3s.

I'm looking to form a list of decent hard rock/metal artists.

Some I have so far:
system of a down
Coal Chamber
Linkin Park
Orgy
KMFDM

Can anyone help me add to the list?

Some of the best 'hard rock' bands in the biz include:
-Nine Inch NailsI wouldn't exactly call NIN "hard rock". If anything, the industry has labeled Reznor as "industrial", especially when Pretty Hate Machine debuted in 1989. The only album that really qualifies as "hard rock" in style is Broken, released in 1992. Sure, there's probaby at least 2 tracks on the other albums that might qualify as well (e.g. "Head Like A Hole" and "Terrible Lie" on Pretty Hate Machine, "Mr. Self-Destruct" and "March of the Pigs" on The Downward Spiral, "Somewhat Damaged" and "Starf**kers, Inc." on The Fragile), but for the most part it's whatever he wants it to sound like.

The thing you have to know about NIN is that Trent Reznor doesn't conform to one specific style, which explains why he's not exactly popular. The general populace wants a certain artist to stick one way or else it won't do. Reznor doesn't like this idea. Thus people dub him as a "rock" artist when he fact it's hard to tell what genre he truly falls under. Look at it this way:

Pretty Hate Machine (1989): Medicore late 80s/early 90s techno-industrial-synthpop

Broken (1992): Hard, angry, heavy rock (especially on Wish and Happiness In Slavery)

The Downward Spiral (1994): The best word to describe the style is "demented"

The Fragile (1999): Appealing more to the mainstream, a bit gentlier and emotional

I included the year for each album because the time period also had an influence on the style. 1989 was his premiere year, 1992 he had legal troubles with TVT records that set the mood for Broken, 1994 was a year where he felt kinda demented, 1999 was the year he finally ended the state of depression he was in after his grandmother died 2 years prior.

In short, if you heard one track from each main NIN album one at a time, you wouldn't guess at first that any two tracks were by the same artist. The only factor that gives it away is Trent's voice.

To see what I mean, DR, try these listening to these tracks:

"Sin" from Pretty Hate Machine
"Wish" from Broken
"Closer" from The Downward Spiral
"We're In This Together" and "Just Like You Imagined" from The Fragile.

Each track epitomizes the style of the album it comes from, at least I think so. When and if you ever do so, tell me what you think.

So much music to download, and so little time.

Reznorite420:
I'm farmiliar with Trent's work. I'm a fan of the industrial sound, and really like a band when it keeps itself from going mainstream. He is also one of my favorite musical producers. His work is almost immediately recognizeable.

Regardless of how you label it, I love Trent's work. Personally, my favorite 'rock bands' out there today are Deftones, Limp Bizkit, Tool, Korn, and System of a Down. All of these bands have shown tremendous diversity in both style and emotion and have conveyed impressive feeling and depth in their music. All of them should rightly be considered in a genre of their own.

Hate to break this to you, oh mature one, but a band doesn't have to fit in your narrow preconceptions of what constitutes 'good' music to be a good band.

if u think limp bizkit puts out good musi and o think that they are a hard rock band than your knowledge of bands is slim. That applies to you heretic

tell me: what it is you think constitutes 'good music' and why YOUR standards should apply to everyone??

personally, i think 'hard rock' and 'metal' is too limiting a label for limp bizkit (as well as most of the other bands i mentioned) but since that is how they are commonly categorized i felt it appropriate to mention them.

Hey, stop arguing in my thread.

If heretic likes Limp Bizkit, leave him alone. It only matters if it sounds good to you. He is not forcing anyone to listen to them. There is nothing wrong with liking them. I actually own the first 2 albums, but I stopped listening to them after they started catering to the MTV crowd. Sometimes bands do that to sell albums, but it dosen't make them suck.

Thank you, Darth.

Still, I think you should check out their third album (Choc Starfish and the Hotdog-Flavored Water). It is easily their best (most creative, most diverse, most original, most expressive/deepest) yet, to my opinion (Boiler is their best song). Not to mention, the band has a new album (Less is More) due out on April 1.

Just my thoughts.
