Have the triceraton origins ever been explained in the new cartoon or comics? I was curious if they evolved from the prehistoric triceratops, it makes sense. Seems too much of a coincidence that the aliens resemble the dino and also share a similar name. Has this ever been addressed?

Michelangelo explains it in Volume 4 as Parallel earth development.

Oh. Could you perhaps explain that if it's not too much trouble? Parallel earth development?

Basically Parallel Earth Development is when different planets manage to have similar animals or the people's develop similar (IE both worlds having civil wars, ect).

In this case the planets both had Saurian creatures. But where dinosaurs became extinct on Earth they didn't on the Ceratopsian worlds. Instead the Ceratopsians became the dominant species.

I good example of this is Dinosaucers. This is a world where dinosaurs developed similarly to how they developed on earth. Both worlds (Earth and Reptilon) had a major event (IE the Asteroid). But where the Asteroid destroyed the dinosaurs on earth, on Reptilon it gave them heightened intelligence.
