Hey all,
This has been a dream project of ours for years, and we have finally gotten around to doing it. These are a few pics of the work in progress so you can see what we are up to. The full suit will be done in the next 2-3 weeks, and we'll continue to add progress pictures to this thread for those interested.
We'll also have all 4 of the costumes at Dragon Con, possibly SDCC, and a few other conventions. We are doing movie heads, and another version of the heads as well, which will be unveiled soon as well...probably after the full suit is finally finished.
The mask will be available in cloth, not just the sculpted verrsion, the joints will have leather pads, etc. So, anyway, here are the pics of work in progress...(just started) the hands, and feet...and the head and shell are nearly complete.
More to come, so check back soon!!!!!

Yes, it will be a fully wearable costume, and will be put on much like the movie suits. The mask will not however have the animatronics it had in the movie.

He did say that the costume was like the movie versions, and in those versions the 'mask' parts were sculpted and painted parts of the rest of the mask, while the only cloth parts were the knot in back and the bandanna tails. I'm guessing Xtreme's costume will be similar to that.

To answer the question about the bandana's. In the movie the bandan was sculpted into the head and then a thin cloth was applied over the sculpted bandana to give it that raised look that it has in the movie. The cloth is glued tightly over the sculpt is why you see the wrinkes and detail. :)

Once done, will the costume be for sale? And if so, where would one be able to purchase it? I know that's a long ways from now, but just a general question. Thanks.

could someone please explain to me the process of turning clay sculptures into costumes? i mean i always thought people used a human sculpture and made a suit around it, not make a sculpture in the suit, cause if you add material over it...all the detail would be on the inside...?
Bmaga123
09-18-2006, 10:21 AM
You start with the sculpt. Once the sculpt is finished and dried you cast it by making a mold of the sculpt. Now you have a mold that you would poor the latex material into creating the detailed peices of the costume. Hope this helps :)

It's the type of project only true dedication and love would see it through to completion.
Some fantastic sculpt work on the limbs, shell and head. Really fantastic.
Should we take the 'frown' as being a sign that you intend to go as Raph? (I'm unaware of any past topics which mentioned this project, so excuse my now knowing which Turtle it's meant to be).

Here's an update on the project:
The shell is molded and will be cast tomorrow and Saturday, with pics hopefully on Mon for all to see. It is a massive 4 part mold, and it looks beautiful. We can't wait to put it on! The head has been molded since these pictures, and will be cast tomorrow, with pics to follow shortly after as well. The chest section (arms, neck and top of torso) will be photographed early next week, as well as the front section of the turtle shell (full chest section). The entire waist and leg sections will also be photographed next week. Both hands are finished and will be molded ASAP...it's all coming together nicely. All of the elbow, knee and wrist pads are being put together now as well.
Here are a few pics to update:

If that's Raph based on the movie, there's just one characteristic missing...scar on his upper left lip/cheek.
The skin texture is NICE. But he shouldnt be glossy like that, I'll assume that just a production coat?
cant wait to see this all done! lookin good
Dragnskull
09-22-2006, 05:20 AM
...i never knew raph had a scar in the movies?
anyways, thats just the clay molding, so its fine for that piece to be glossy [probably some kind of stuff to keep the mold from sticking too much? *shrugs*]
and also: might i ask how exactly you managed to do that texture? honostly it looks like styrophome [if you look at styrophome youll see that exact design/texture] but i was wondering if im right :S

Thanks everyone for the kind comments. Let me answer a few questions for those that asked...
How we make these things. Here's the short and sweet answer: Sculpt the pieces out of clay. Mold them out of Ultracal-30 (basically plaster material). Molds are generally 2 part, a front part and back part that are put back together after demolding. After they are put back together and strapped, we then pour latex. Latex is poured layer after layer, once one layer has cured a little, you pour your next layer. Each layer adds thickness. When you pour your layer, you pour the excess latex back in the latex bucket. After the piece is poured, and completely dry, the costume piece is pulled from the mold, then you get what you originally sculpted, now wearable. The piece is then cleaned up, trimmed, and dremmeled. After that process, it is painted, shaded, highlighted and clear coated.
All of these pieces will also have a foam core to make them feel more realistic, and that is a whole other beast to expalin.
The other question is the gloss on the sculpt. After a sculpt is finished you spray it with a clear coat, which helps prevent the clay from sticking to the Ultra-cal, making it easier to get the mold off the sculpt when it is taken apart. The gloss will not be on the finished pieces.
As for the texture...that is from a single texture tool. Each spot of texture is hand stamped...over the entire piece. A very tiring process.

..But looks like it was worth it! Those look great so far. How many are you planning on making?
Personally, I don't think it'd be the thing I'd wear for halloween or anything. --It looks more like something I'd put on a mannequin in a glass case in my house! My shrine to the TMNT! :-P

Dude --
Those costumes look unreal. I can't wait to see what they look like when they're all finished, they're are unbelievable (the shell especially looks incredible). And yeah, obviously something that won't happen for a little while, but if those are for sale, I'm totally down for one of them. Solid work.
(And by the way, to everyone, this is my first post. I signed up a couple of weeks ago, then moved, and hadn't recieved internet for a long while. I did, however, post on the introduction page way back when).

Okay, another update for everyone. What you see is an unfinished, unapinted: head (with the silicone eyes not affixed), torso, forearms and hands. None of the pieces have their foam muscle backing yet, so everything looks a tad flat...but soon we'll be showing much, much more.

Hey all,
I'm the fanatic who commissioned XtremedesignFX to make the suit :D
I've been giving 'em quite a hard time, pushing them to get it finished,
but I've come to the conlusion to just let them go at it, at their own pace...
They're working on it for up to 16 hours a day, about 7 days a week,
so they're giving it all they've got. These guys are absolutely the best,
most dedicated pros at what they do.
I can't thank them enough for taking on such a huge project :tthumbsu:
-- I am sooo looking forward to finally getting that suit delivered --

Jeeze dude, you commissioned that? That's gotta be all kinds of expensive! :o I was thinking/hoping they were making it as a sort of prototype for a (small)mass-producing project or something but... whoa.
It's awsome that you are sharing these progress pictures of the Ninja Turtle with us, these are wicked-cool.

Edit:
I really like that Casey Jones aka Pain 101 mask. I might have to look into getting that...

Yup he did. Left cheek, just over the lip...it actually slightly forks too...Im pretty pathetic when it comes to Raph and details. You can see the little downward sweeping mark on his cheek here, going opposite direction than his little curl of the mouth....I seen a photo from the design studio, where you see all the details is plain light, the scar actually has a tiny little fork at the upper tip but it's so minute it's not really noticed. But the scar is noticeable, nobody ever realises it's there...baffles me
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v431/buslady/goinout.jpg
anyways...the design is pretty damn good...im impressed. it's not easy taking a character like these guys and recreating them like this.
i probably would have had the pads buckled and velcroed both, i think they were like that in the movies, buckled to give it that primitive hand made look but under it velcro. everything was buckles with them. Raph's belt was weird cause it had fastened around back..how the hec would he put it on cause no way he can stretch around back like that hahaaa

Rich? Me?
LOL, no way Buslady...
I've just been so fascinated by these costumes eversince I saw their first live action movie,
I always dreamed about actually owning one.
And when I saw one of the originals being sold over ebay
(in a rather bad state, torn and ripped from the action sequences and years and years of storage)
I started thinking about it again.
After more then 15 years, I'm finally able to get an excellent reproduction!
I can die a happy man :tangel:
(not today or tomorrow though, after it has arrived of course...)

Yeah I saw a TMNT3 Donatello costume on Ebay, it was in bad bad bad shape. I never liked that design, it ruined them.
The first movie's look had the most realistic look, I think cause they created the costumes first them fit the electronics second, they reversed it in TMNT 2 so they looked different.
I dont know if i would want a raph costume to display, to me it would be like a hunter's trophy...a lifeless hero...a dead turtle. I do want a couple props though..they made many sets of the sai...I want a set of those, the steel ones, not the stunt ones...and his coat and that huge hat...

That was probably the one I saw too...
And the design of the suits (and not only the design, but colors and such, aswell)
was just awefull in TMNT3, I agree with that.
The Henson creations from TMNT1 still kick ass, after all these years.
I would like to see another live action movie like that happening, but then again...
That just might do more damage than good, with all the digital FX overkill these days...

Anything Creature Shop rules over all. They make the coolest, cutest and most realistic animatronic creatures ever. The neat thing is , the TMNT were apart of the evolution of the modern control system :D
We have All Creatures Effects to thank for screwing up their looks and using clunky crappy electronics..OMG you need SUNGLASSES to see their teeth they were so freaking white and FAKE looking. Come on people these are mutant turtles living in a sewer, they dont have dentists! hehe
I would love to see a new live movie in the SAME flavor as #1, with NO CGI in any way or form. Just plain old fashioned movie making.
Sheesh..congrats on your commision...i would lovvvve to have a costume like - so real and life-like...
And as for the updates, all I can say is WOW...please keep them coming...can't wait to see the final product...
and just in time for Halloween!!:)

This company looks like there doing a great job on making the costume although I must say it doesnt appear to resemble any of the movie turtles at all. I have a commision being doens right now of Raphaels head from part 1. Its going to look exact right down to the creases in his bandana. I am having him done with his snarl look in part 1 and he being delivered in a custome display case as well. I cant wait to get it and I will post pics once he arrives. :)

Since I'm the first one to commission this, they really had to start from scratch,
which means it has cost me several thousands of dollars.
You can't expect to have such a thing made for only a couple of hundreds,
I think that's pretty obvious.
But it's best you contact the guys from XtremedesignFX...
They can give you an exact price for the suit...
I would think it will cost a little less then mine, since they've already got the molds.
Hope this helps a bit.
It's d*mn expensive, but customers definately get what they're paying for.

Yes it will have the scar on the cheek. As far as the spots the FX artist doing my head thinks it would look better if he kind of combined the first and second films paint job so it loks more organic and has a few more spots. :)

woohooo for the scar hehe
IMO i think lesser more subtle spotting is best...if you make them stand out, they ruin the overall look of the turtle, that's one of the things that bugged me about the TMNT2 costumes, there's more bolder spotting
TMNT1, they were blended, subtle, and dark..they didnt stand outto me they looked REAL.

This is amazing. I found the book on ebay just now and purchased it. I hope there are more pics and info. Thank you for posting these pics I have been wanting to see this stuff for years. They need to implement this into special features on the DVD's. Also I can tell by viewing all the pics that most of it is from The second movie but the pic to lower right that shows people getting fitted and the donatello mask on the table is from the first film. If you examine the way the turtles look and the paint jobs than its easy to tell which film its from. The Raphael Head here at the bottum is the second film Raphael.

Wow I am going to order that magazine. Does it have alot more pics inside that are rare? I just found the magazine on ebay and purchased it. Thanks again
Do you know of any magazines that have behind the scenes looks of the first ninja turtle movie?
I just found 2 cinefantastique magazines on ebay that have TMNT 1 and the other TMNT 3 so I will have all 3 magazines. Hopefully there is some good stuff in them.

I believe the book with the innards of Raph's noggin, the mask and all that is from Eyewitness Books, usually found in the Children's Books section..but the Film one must be OOP cause I cant find it!!!
Tis true that is movie 2's raph head, there's certain markings that defer 1 & 2 from each other( i'm that pathetic, I nearly got some of his facial markings memorised), at least the scar's there. There's one spot off center on his snout, where in 2, ther's a pattern of 3 little spots where the one big one should be! The mask has the 3, but they're faded.
Here's the book on EBAY http://cgi.ebay.com/Film-Eyewitness-Books_W0QQitemZ230052338431QQihZ013QQcategoryZ378Q QrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem

I just ordered this book off of ebay only it has a white cover but it is still from 1992. I am a fanatic as well and can tell all the differences from all 3 movies. There is no point in comparing the 3rd films because they are terrible. Raph looked his best in part 1. I hired an fx artist to make me a replica part 1 Raph head non animatronic and his a display peice made with latex rubber, real cloth bandana. His face is molded in his angry snarl look from part one. I cant wait to get it.

Awsome job on that turtle. I want one, can ya do one for me ?
Seriously this is superb. Very good job. The way the head is designed gives an older look to the turtle. I like that, looks like a real adult now, not a teen.
Very good. Could you take a pic of the turtle with the shell on his back? Don't matter if someone has to hold it. I'm just curious to see the turtle with his shell on.

id like to know how you made the turtle shell if its not asking too much
cause at first it looked like it was a clay sculpture, but after i thought about it just now, that would be very dangerous tot he suit... considering a huge piece of clay ont he back means one falce move while wearing it = cracked shell, or crumbled, not to mention i figure a big clay piece like that musnt be that light...

I didnt make the suit but I can tell you that the original pic is the sculpt from clay and from that sculpt they cast it probably in fiberglass or some sort of foam latex or rubber. So the final version isnt clay. When starting the process of making these type of suits/props you always start by shaping and molding with clay. Hope this helps.

I think the original movie carapaces were a fiberglas frame covered w/ the highly sculpted foam rubber or whatever material they were using at the time. Inside the frame a section for the batteries and other controls for the heads.

Whoohoo, the suit is finished!!!
First of all, I have to say all credit goes to Lance and Jeremy from XtremeDesignFX
for all the hard work, long hours they've spent on making this suit over the past year.
If you ever - EVER - need anything costume related,
be sure to visite their website and contact them!
I asked them if they would be up for this and clearly they were!
so again, all credit goes to them... I received the pics of the finished suit today
and I don't want to steal their thunder, but I just have to show you at least one of them...
If you're not already sitting down (which would be weird, seeing you should be, behind your computer)
have a seat. buckle up and brace yourselves... coz here it is:

Finally, we are finished. Here are some pictures of the finished suit that we sent out today. The suit is made out of latex, foam filled, with a ridged foam shell. The suit isn't as flexible as we had hoped...limited Ninja moves :P , however since I am not going to be doing any backflips onto some Foot Clan scum, I'm okay with that. It feels great in the costume. You can walk around, pose, etc. Anyway, we hope you enjoy the final piece, as we have.

Just saw this, up to $7000 omg...
cripes thats allot of money for something that's so cheap looking...eep..
And sorry this is my first time looking at this thing it looks bad and rubbery.
Edit: I'm looking at it more it's not that bad but the head looks something from a halloween store.
The neck seems a bit long to me and the feet are not as detailed as the rest of the body at least so it seems.
My orignal judgement was based on the photos from ebay but they arent that good the pics of who made this costume are allot better and thats what slightly changed my opinion.
It's not the worst thing I've ever seen but it's also not the best.
And before anyone bashes me Yes I know what I'm talking about I'm a makeup artist and have plenty of friends who have made their own tmnt related costumes including a real life version of what bebop would look like had he been used in movie 2.
Oh and one more thing I'm not sure what version you where going for but it reminds me more of the Chiodo bros. next mutation tmnt rather than say the henson creature shop versions.
Sorry if I'm being a bit hard just like to give a bit of real constructive critisism when everyone else sugar coats things.
These guys are worth every penny though...they made my Casey Jones mask and it was PERFECT.

Putrescent, I'm not sure I agree with you on that. I would say this looks at least as good as the original movie costumes. Also, I'm not really sure what the policies are on this forum but on the art critique sites I frequent, it's generally good to reserve crits for those who ask for them as they'll be much more appreciated. :) Just my suggestion, forgive me please if it's out of place.

I totally agree with Putrescent, this costume is cool and all but not even close to movie quality. Movie costumes were made with foam latex and had more of a stiff sturdy look to them with alot more detail and it is expected coming from movie makers like Jim Henson's creature shop. What this costume is a high quality halloween costume and thats it, If this was warn in the movies then I wouldnt watch them because they would look so fake. I am not trying to bash on the costume or the makers of it because they did a good job but please dont say its better then the first movie costumes because its not and it doesnt even compare.

Ah, I totally understand what you're saying here. Honestly from the photos alone (not seeing it in motion) I think the -shape- and look of it is excellent and I almost prefer it to the original movies. Just my (completely unprofessional) opinion, of course!
Maybe it's purely the fact that I like seeing something other than the more cartoon-like and young look to the early movie suits. (which I loved for that movie) :o But thats just me.

I'm waiting more on the fraggle movie personally I'm not to happy with the dark crystal movie with from I've been told so far. But Who knows it may be good we will just have to wait and see. Atleast they are all doing better that The Muppets are over at disney.:dead:
I wanted to rampage when they canceled Farscape. :( I loved that show so much. And what have you heard about the Dark Crystal movie that worries you? I haven't been able to find much on it other than the rough synopsis of the story...
The one thing I love about the Muppets right now is that I've finally been able to get ahold of the DVDs of the complete Muppet Show rather than just a VHS dubiously titled 'The Best of the Muppet Show.' I'm not sure if thats due to Disney or not but I like it. :D
Annnd I totally kidnapped the thread. D: Yipe!
Edit: WHOA, wait....Fraggle movie?? 8O

I was also but I really hadn't gotten much of a chance to watch it when it was on I have the dvd's.
Well when I met Brian & Wendy Froud at the sandiago comicon they both where very dissapointed in telling me that the hensons didnt really have them involved int he film at all. Which is shocking seeing as the character designs are done by them I'm just dissapointed in that and the fact there will be allot of cgi and Henson while amazing at animatronics and puppets are horrid at cg computer characters. They haven't evolved an inch since Jim's experiments in the Jim Henson Hour Days which is sad. I really wish he was still alive creating beautiful things for us all to enjoy.
Disney has only brought out season 1 of the old muppet show season 2 is in limbo some place tied up in legal matters over the rights to songs.
So I'm not sure of what you have there it's more than likely a bootleg of the entire show if thats what you have.
I enjoy the best of the muppet show because sadly unlike the ones disney plans to bring out these dvd's while super hard to find and expensive might I add are uncut.
And yes Fraggle rock movie is in the works and is about them going to save uncle matt because gobo hasnt gotten any letters from him in a long time and they have to go out into our world to save him.
And yeah I'm sorry for taking this over also lol.

Oh man. :( Thats so disappointing to hear, what made the original Dark Crystal so awesome was the combination of the Froud's and Jim Henson coming together on that project, I can't imagine anything DC related without the Frouds. D: And the idea that it's not going to be puppetry makes me shudder, wth. >:( Whose idea was that?
Oooh, so far I've only gotten through the first season. :v I just hadn't added the next to my Blockbuster que....or so I thought. D: Gosh I wish they'd hurry up and release them. Really I've been holding my breath for the episodes with Victor Borga and Alice Cooper. I loved those. Another show that was destined for limbo for a billion years was Fairytale Theater. It finally got released. Dunno if you caught that one when it aired but it was a good show!
I can't believe there is going to be a Fraggle movie. Thats just too cool. X)
::cough:: >_>; erm....so yea....turtles....they're awesome!

Just came upon this thread. Great costume, only criticism I have is that the shell looks a little too big overall. A few tweaks here and there but it is a great take and would be a good fight for new live action movie... or something in the future.. keep up the good work!!! and as for the Casey mask..... drool.....

Nice quality costume for sure but I will say I feel the shell is to big and the head is to small. Also something about the turtle face itself looks weird and kind of off but otherwise obviously very talented people we have making this costume. :-)

Great work on the costume man! Really stellar job. The only thing I could say is the snout is abit short. The face kinda resembles the Next Mutation look. Still great though!
The only thing I don't like about the costume is the feet, the toes scare me.

Wow.
Finally, we are finished. Here are some pictures of the finished suit that we sent out today. The suit is made out of latex, foam filled, with a ridged foam shell. The suit isn't as flexible as we had hoped...limited Ninja moves , however since I am not going to be doing any backflips onto some Foot Clan scum, I'm okay with that. It feels great in the costume. You can walk around, pose, etc. Anyway, we hope you enjoy the final piece, as we have.
