that the plot is going to turn everyone off, or at least all tmnt fan's street cred will be diminished.
How can you argue with a non-tmnt liking friend that tmnt are more than just kiddy crap? I don't care, but I'll be honest when I say that I was hoping this movie would make the turtles cooler to a broader group of people. Even toy/comic/cartoon nerds don't give the turtles respect and write them off as lame kiddy stuff along with power rangers and pokemon. Again I personally don't care, but it would've been nice for me to give them the middle finger and then point to the new turtles movie.
But the turtles going up against 13 monsters, and all of it being orchstrated by evil Max Winters the corporate whore. It just sounds like something the new cartoon would have done like fast forward.
I hope the movie proves me wrong, but just by going with the plot of this new movie, or what we know of it so far, it seems like this is anything but the continuation of the first movie which was way more realistic in every sense (live action, real problems like cults and crime/violence, not a real corny storyline).
I think you forget that TMNT is inherently awesome. ;)
Really. Basically it's a bunch of good "monsters" fighting a bunch of bad monsters. That's rad no matter how you slice it.
Frankly, I don't want to see that much more of the Foot clan as depicted in the previous films. And if I want to see "real problems" like crime and violence I can open my door at around 1am and walk down the street. Bring on the monsters, dude.
You argue with your friends who think TMNT is kiddie crap? When most of the world is enamored by a guy in a cape and red underwear that he wears on the wrong side of his pants?

I won't lie, I'm a bit worried about the whole monster angle. Still I'm curious to see how it all pans out. The monsters could work out well, depending on their background and designs. Than again, I'm generally just expecting the monsters to be decent opponents for the TMNT. It's Winters I hope turns out to be a strong enough villain to carry the movie alongside the Turtles.

im gonna give it a chance. it does sound like a big sotry arc for the series though...I will miss costumes, they were real and moved real, not hopping around like popcorn down buildings doing physically impossible things.

Well Iris, you make a valid point, but I could argue that if I wanted monsters and silly tmnt action, I could turn on 4kids tv or pop in a new toon dvd. I think most of us fans would agree that the movies were great because they were different from the cartoons and took themselves more seriously (well the first 1 did, and sorta the second, 3rd maybe not so much).
That they were grounded in reality is what seperated them from the cartoon and comics. Now we're getting a movie that seems like an extension of the current cartoon on tv (well not fast forward, the one before it).
Give me one area where the movie plot (that we know of so far) differs from something in the new cartoon. We got TONS of monsters in the cartoon, monsters from the underground, mutants and monsters, etc...
Obviously the turtles don't need to center around the foot now that shredder's out of the equation. (Though they still seem to be an important part of this movie.)
The movies were great because it was something as completely unbelievable as mutant turtles, and it grounded them in reality while still being fun.
This new movie... I just don't know. It just seems like it was a lost cartoon plot.

I have a friend who likes the old TMNT better because he doesn't like TMNT being serious. Which I thought was utterly retarded but whatever.
And I got some friends who like TMNT serious, and some who don't like it at all.
Anyways just chill, FF wouldn't be that bad in my opinion if it wasn't for the style. Which is lame and uncreative in every aspect. But this movie obviously has a huge art aspect to it so even if the plot isn't all that great is has a good style going for it and the monsters from what I have seen look pretty nifty.
I don't know, Ectocooler. I liked the movies just because they were TMNT-- I like the whole concept. Yes, they were more serious than the 87 toon, and a bit truer to the original comic, but the original comic started out as a bit of a parody. There's just no one way TMNT is "supposed to be." I'll be happy if the characters have natural responses and interact easily... because to me that makes everything else believable, no matter what it is.
I am extremely happy that the people who are in charge of this movie seem to have their hearts in it. What will make it perfect is if they do good storytelling... something that doesn't make you stop and think about the fact that you're watching a movie. I just want to watch and Not Think. At least until after. That will make it a great movie for me.
I'm not worried about anything sounding "like a cartoon plot." For one thing, all we have is a sketch. And for another, I suppose I don't get how a plot like this is too fantastical... when the turtles existing is fantastical in itself. But if the storytelling isn't there, I'm not sure I care what the plot and characters are like... so no, I'm not worried!
only time can tell!
Maybe I should have just said that.

Yeah I have to admit that the plot is not what I'd hoped for, I would like to see the TMNT getting some street cred with a kick ass film.
They should have kept the "City at War" story arc for this movie, the fact that it's a continuation of the previous movies sets up this plot perfectly, with Shredder being dead and all.
Instead we get Max Winters, who sounds at home in a James Bond flick, and then there's Michaelangelo's Hero worship of the Night Watcher(how original)
Which personally for me is what started alarm bells ringing.
I mean come on, Mikey's a Ninja, not a school boy who's just come home to watch Spiderman.
That might have been acceptable way back in the early 90's, but surley they should all be a bit older now, and in Mikeys case a bit more mature.
Then there's the designs, the Turtles do look more ninja like and acrobatic, but the whole skinny look seems to have been applied to almost every character, Casey's more like a long distance runner than a weight pumping vigilante.
I know I'm being very negative here, but I hope that when I do see TMNT, I won't be walking out of the cinema embarassed and disapointed like I was in 1991 after secret of the ooze(ugh!)
Of what has been said by Kevin Munroe (I don't know which interview...but I know he mentioned it) is that if this movie does well, then a sequel will be made. And in this sequel, he has always wanted to "explore" the 'City at War' arc. So if this film does well, we can expect a 'City at War'. This better do well. March 23...come faster.

Kevin also mentioned bringing Shredder back for the sequel, the "Return to New York" arc would be ideal.
I really hope the new movie is good, even though I sounded quite negative in my earlier post, I'm still really looking forward to it.

Careful buddy, lots of people did like that movie, myself included. However, now that I'm older and wiser, the first movie is my favorite because it's aimed at a more mature audience.
On the other hand, I think we can all agree that TMNT3 was one turtle short of TNM.

Careful buddy, two or three people did like that movie, myself excluded. It had a good story, but it was the victim of overbearing ridiculosity. If I didn't know any better, I'd think it was a Disney film... Actually, TNM is owned by a Disney branch now, right? Jetix? Isn't that ironic...

I'm definitley worried about the monsters...but I'll give it a chance and just hope it turns out good. I wanna be able to hype this movie to all my friends, and if they see it and its bad, then I'll look like an idiot...so please have mass appeal.

I can see where TMNT would be considered kiddy by people. Hell, just about anything can be considered kiddy anymore. Being a gamer, I inherantly taught myself not to care how other people judge me for my likes and dislikes a long time ago.

I know a lot of people liked it, I am not trying to offend anyone who did or still does.
It's just that Turtles 2 could have been so different, the amount of inspiration and material that could have been taken from the original comics, imagine an 8 foot animatronic Triceraton!
Certain scenes and dialogue in Turtles 2 just makes me cringe, and I can remember being so disapointed coming out of the cinema(I was 11) back in 1991, I loved the first movie, it was exciting and had great fight scenes, Secret of the Ooze just felt empty.
I can compare the disapointment to going to see The Phantom Menace.

One of the problems I see with having monsters as enemies would be the martial arts action. Sure, the turtles will use their martial arts skills against these creatures, but the creatures will just attack with whatever they can. It isn't a contest of martial arts skills. Unless these monsters do know martial arts (which I doubt), it'll be a one sided fight. By that I mean just one side fighting with skill against something that fights with god know whatever they can do. Imagine something like a Kung Fu master fighting with an Elephant, and that's pretty much how I see it. One guys fights with fitness and skills while the other just rampages. There's no back and forth between two skilled opponents. I know the Foot and Karai will be in the movie, so I just hope that the fighting is more human based combat than a monster mash.

This is the reason that monsters kind of suck
First of all, I'd like to say that I'm not bashing the film. I'm as eager about it as the next guy. It's just that the story for the proposed sequel sounds like the one that should be used for the first one. It brings back the case of 'Batman Begins' and 'Superman Returns'. Both films established a story that the sequels could dwell more into. Since the story would be developed already, there would be more room for action and whatnot. This 'TMNT' movie seems like it'll re-establish the TMNT into the mainstream but it won't get the full appreciation. Let's say it does well and the sequel is the 'City at War/Return to New York' arc, wouldn't the fans have wanted to see that first instead of a proposed 'monster' film? Just my two cents. It just seems that knowing that the "planned" sequel is the 'City at War' arc just makes me feel that we should be getting that first. But I'm sure that this movie will have some set-up to a sequel so hopefully when a detailed storyline is revealed, it'll put to ease some of these uneasy feelings. Other than that, yes, I believe monsters of all things are not what the turtles should be fighting but think about it, Peter Laird has had a tremendous say in this film so he wouldn't be giving us monsters if they didn't mean anything (can someone say Shredder clone? can someone say there's your set up to sequel?) Did you see that? It's posts like these that get me all fired up for this film. I'm gonna' go watch the trailer. Thanks for listening to whatever the hell that was.

I don't think anyone here is bashing the film as far as I can tell, but we are just expressing some concerns we have. I mean, if you compare the discussion that goes on about this movie to that of Transformers, it would make this very thread look like a big ol' love fest.

Good point, I certaintly hope that there's loads of action with Karai and The Foot.
Beacause like you said TerranigmaFreak, big monster versus ninja will lead to ninja using a crane, to drop a concrete block on monsters head type scenario.

I love thinking about all the possibilities and I just came up with another one.
Perhaps the plot involves monsters but the turtle never actually fight them directly. Or perhaps only fights one directly. Instead of fighting to monsters to get rid of them, maybe they'll fight this Max Winters and The Foot to close this portal (I think they were brought through a portal) to stop them. The monsters will be there, but the turtles are powerless against them. On the other hand, they can kick 10 gallons of crap out of the people responsible for bringing them here and close the gate to prevent more from coming in.
That way, we have a plot about monster on the lose, but still plenty of martial arts action to go with it. That or we're going to have another TMNT Vs Tokka and Razzar battle.

Well maybe the monsters humen size may have some sort of fighting background cause by looking at designs of some of them they dont look like they will be that huge but you never know.
Now as far as the next movie having the City At War arc should have been the first movie with the group "breaking up" to have Leo return in the second one to be the plot of this one.
But here's how I think it will go if they use the City At War arc, the Foot and the other factions are fighting for territory in this one. Drugged out throughout the film putting together the peices for the next movie. Leading in to the film adaption of TMNT:City At War

I for one am looking forward to the new movie and dont really care what nonfans think of the franchise. I understand it will naturally be different from the first three made in the early 1990s, but am still willing to give it a chance. In other words, I am keeping an open mind until I actually see it.

1) The 2K3 TMNT series was outstanding. I'm not sure what the heck you were watching or what you were expecting? (Fast Forward is pure crap though.)
2) The first movie was outstanding. The new film is said to be darker in tone than the first film, and will accept the first film as canon.
3) There are still many fans of TMNT young and old. Heck, I hate to break it to you but you're on a TMNT message board yourself.

I was worried about the monsters thing at first.... like Ecto, I love the original movies (1 especially) for being really down to earth and real in a way that you feel like walking down the streets of NYC, you're over the lair. A basic premise like that... not having big flashy monsters or spaceships or whatever also forces writers to write WELL. Because they are relying on their character and plot development, not on something flashy.
But I'm not so worried, what with Murphy's descripitions (: darker than the first film? And I LOVE the trailer. It'll be great (: there is a lot of heart going into it and I trust that.
