Ok, this is an idea I had so go with me ok. What is TMNT: FF was not released as a re-tooling of the 2k3 series, but as the re-hash of the OT? What if instead of going dark ala Red Sky, the series had the TMNT rocketed 99 years into the future? Who would be the new villians? Who would be the new allies?
Comments?

They'd probably still use Lord Dregg. He'd come to Earth in the future instead of the present.

Just because it would be set in the future doesn't mean it can't be dark. It may be a cliche but a dark dystopian future would be better for the type of tone they where going for. If it were an apacalyptic future there would have been some justification for the sky to be permenantly red.
The old toon often took characters from the Archie comic so I wouldn't mind if they adapted characters from their future stories like Verminator-X and Armaggon.
They could adapt the "Future Shark Trilogy" and have the present day TMNT and Splinter brought to the future by an ally to rescue their future counterparts who've been kidnapped.
For me the only thing Dregg had going for him as a villain was that the general population of NY thought he was a good guy and their savior and turned the public against the the turtles. This could actualy work better in a future setting, he could be in a position of power and have the authorites hunt down the turtles. Thus the TMNT are still fugitives even in a world were aliens and mutants are common place.
Thus the premise for the remaining seasons is the TMNT trying to rescue their future selves from Dregg while trying to prove the the populace of future New York that Dregg isn't the good guy he apears to be.
Of course certain episodes could deviate from that. Dregg could bring Shredder and Krang to the future for an episode or two to help him get rid of the turtles. Plus they could also have the Rat King (who was still alive in Archie's future stories) and Slash.
That's personaly how I would do it.

Interesting thoughts Galactus. My basic thought though was since the OT was a lot lighter and people are complaining that FF is to light, how would those same people feel if FF tok place during the OT.
Aha! I was a bit confused as to the question as well. If Fast Forward had been in place of Red Sky (with the story not an issue), I'd actually be wowed by the fact that people aren't wearing the same thing all the time. While it wouldn't seem darker, it would be a bit more detail-oriented. But, I think what you were trying to get at was if we would have appreciated it more under those conditions. I most certainly would have. Likely, that would have kept Saban from ever making TNM. ^_^ How awesome would that have been?

Indeed wee Fraggle. If there was no NT:TNM only Jarrah White would be disapointed, I'd wager. :p
