I was sitting at home one night, bored, so I decided to pop in a DVD. I reached for TMNT vol 4 DVD since I watched everything else.
Before, I stopped watching it because I couldn't stomach the campiness of the show. But I just told myself. "The old show is totally diffrent for the comics, so don't expect the same thing". I just quit my bitching and watched the episodes....and I enjoyed them. It was like I was 4 all over again.
I can finally enjoy the old series again without cringing. I'm so happy. :D

Yeah I can understand where you're coming from, I've only watched select episodes from the old cartoon DVD's.
The last four seasons of the new show have been excellent, and with the Mirage comics being my fave TMNT universe, I've found it awkward to watch some of the more corny old toon episodes.

Ya know, it's the damndest thing. Once the season 1 DVD came out I ended up liking it better than the 2k3 series :o
Despite all of it's campiness, it was a pretty quality show.

Old toon and the other universes are just so different. I love the old show for what it is and the new show I liked until season 4. Just how they're written and presented is just so different though. Old toon was always taken as a comedy and was meant to be silly where as the new show is generally pretty serious and concentrates more on the fighting.

glad some one was able to get their head out their butt and stop comparing the old toon to the new one or the comics. it a Different aproach to the turtles and can be apprciated if given half a chance.

I happen to like both shows on alomost equal levels. The new show because it took itself serious (until FF), and the old show because it did just the opposite.
Yea, it can be a bit tuff trying to watch it with a kid's eye and truly, you just can't...you lack the innosense of youth, so theres no way to truly watch the old shows with any appreciation even close to what you probably experienced as a kid...that said, as an adult, i still get alot of joy watching them...its just not the same of course...but fun all the same...:)

I totally see where you're coming from. The same thing happened to me.
I was nuts for the new toon (had yet to get any of the Mirage comics) and was eager to see the old toon again since tons of people here praised it.
I got my hands on a couple of tapes, watched some of the eps, and was really annoyed because I was expecting the same type of show as the new toon.
I was being closed-minded about it and couldn't enjoy it because I kept comparing it to the 2003 series.
Then one day, I got my head out of my ass (as someone else here put it :D ) and gave it another chance. I reminded myself that it was a different show, and when I stopped comparing it to the 2003 series I was able to enjoy it (although I still thing April's kinda annoying it the old toon).
I don't love the old toon, I just like it.
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who felt that way and went through the same thing.

I don't think my head is up my arse, more like my taste has changed as I've gotten older.
The original comics got me back into the Turtles, and they are my favorite TMNT universe, the new toons first 4 seasons reflect the comics tone, and in my opinion is the best televised version of the Turtles.
What I'm trying to say is that it's not that enjoyable to watch an inferior version of one's favorite characters, now that is how I personally feel, I don't think I'm blinded with my head up my hole.
If people want to watch the old toon and enjoy it, fair enough.

Only a few episodes were unwatchable to me and their in the later seasons, when the show loses every ounce of seriousness and just gets plain silly. Like that stupid Easter one with that annoying rabbit.

What about the episode with that detective granny? A kind of miss Marple or Jessica Fletcher woman, that was truly awful.
Turtles On Trial was great fun though, featuring that ED 209 rip off which Krang steels.

if you don't care for the classic toon as much as the new one than that is fine. My comment was not directed at people like you. My comment was directed at people who are to narrow minded to see the 1987 series as a completely different approuch to a dark and gritty comic, and appriciate it for what it is. A quirky cartoon that aimed to entertain that had some serious threads weaved into its format on occasison.
I've heard people pretty much call the old toon inferior because it doesn't have the gritty story lines of the new one. Which i think is as narrow minded as old toon fanitics they claim the new toon is crap just because it doesn't have Rocksteady and Bebop. The old toon can't be compared to the new one because their formates are to different. ANd in its own right i think it is the new toons equal.

People on one side or another, not both, are complete dumb asses.
Like you said alot of old toon fans don't like the new toon because, "No tehcnodrome, no Krang, no Bebop, No Rocksteady" Did you stop and think maybe they don't fit? That and they had their era okay. 10 seasons is alot and though they could be adapted*Right Putrescent?* they weren't about to because their from a time when TMNT wasn't serious and the new toon wanted to be more serious.
now the new toon fans who don't like the old toon just have no sense of humor. "It's to goofy. It doesn't have gritty story lines. It didn't have many story arcs. It doesn't follow the comic." It didn't try to either. The old toon was it's own machine and yeah it was goofy but at the same time it was for kids. Little kids, and back then they didn't have edgey cartoon programming for children. And if you look past the goofy there's alot of adult humor in the old series.
Me I like both but for very different reasons. But that's not the point...the point is there's no reason to hate on either series.

That would be April's detective Aunt Agitha aka Aunt Aggie...who is now Uncle August/Auggie.
I like the original series. It has it's own little quirks. Yes the Easter Bunny was annoying (a hillbilly easter bunny?? WTF?! ) but so was Usagi in a way (they never did figure out how to get him home but they helped the Easter Bunny figure out how to get to his home demension? ).
Some eps I indeed love like "Raphael Meets His Match" (Mona Lisa shoulda been a reacurring darnit!), or any of the Lotus Blossom eps (She should have been in more than 2 eps darnit! ).
An annoying ep was the one where Michelangelo had this crush on this snobby biatch of a rich girl and his brothers were all like "You can't be with her! She's human!".... and here I am watching this and like "So Lotus isn't human?"
I also like the ep where Krang places a love spell in their pizza but it only effects Leo, Mike, and Raph....who ended up all googly eyed about Irma.
My fave scene is when they're fighting over her and Splinter comes in.
Splinter: "What's going on here?!"
Donatello: "They're in love..."
*Splinter's eyes light up*: "That is good!"
Donatello: "With the same woman...."
*Splinter looks sad*: "That is bad...."
An odd thing I often found with the original series is that whenever any character is turned into a chibi everyone is suddenly their aunt or uncle (the exception is when Shredder is effected by the Fountain of Youth....he was a baby but still had the shredder personality....). Like "Uncle Splinter!" or "Aunty April!" or "Unca Shredder!"....

I agree with much of what you just said but I would like to point out that in its own right the old toon had its serious serious moments and even some slight angnyst on occasion as well. I mean certainly not to the dramatic degree of the New toon but it had them none the less.

I'm only two volumes in, and so far I haven't seen anything I found too hokey.
Nostalgia plays a big factor in my DVD buys, I think I can hack the rest.
