I'm not entirely clear what the details are, but Pete's sabbatical from all things Turtles has apparently come to an end after finding out how much the script for the movie had changed in his absense. Apparently he was a little freaked out about the film due to the changes made to the script he wasn't made aware of and has returned earlier to steer things back around...

Where'd you read this?
Pete? Peter Laird? Micro-managing stuff? Why, you don't say!
Seriously, what sabbatical? I thought Laird was taking time from his TMNT comic to work on film related stuff. And he's also been reviewing TMNT tv scripts all along.
What are your sources, dude?

Based on everything I've read Pete has been involved everystep of the way. He decided to put Vol. 4 on hold because he really wants to make sure the film comes out as best as possible. Since, let's be honest, this film will make or break the revival of this franchise. Fast Forward is clearly an indication of a franchise in its death throes.
Source dude?

Whoops! Sorry guys, a friend of mine apparently knows someone over at Mirage, and mentioned it in an email to him.

So doest that mean that Max Winters no longer will have made a pact with the Devil?
Indeed, it means Minnie Summers will cut a deal with George Burns.
Or, it doesn't mean anything at this point.
It seems we have conflicting information on how much involvement Peter Laird has had. Intriguing.
Chris

That's interesting.
With Comic Con revealing that Mako had already recorded most (if not all) of his dialogue that implied to me that a lot of the voice recording work had already been done, which means that the script should have been approved months ago.
Maybe this is part of the reason we haven't had any more news on the film (including the promised cast announcements) since SDCC?
Just out of curiosity how old is the info that email? Because Pete taking time off TMNT comic to oversee the TMNT movie came within the last 6 months (when he was apparently on sabbatical).
I'm wondering if Pete's 6 month sabbatical was actually earlier this year and ended around the time he put TMNT comic on hold for TMNT movie. I guess it could make sense given the last 6 months of the TV show would have been Fast Forward, and he may not have been as heavily involved in that as he was in 2K3, and much of the pre-production on the movie would also have been done by then.
I must admit I was unaware of any sabbatical and thought that he was still heavily involved in all TMNT (overseeing TV, movie and Tales). As for his break from the TMNT comic I put that down to him wanting to oversee the final phases of the film's production to ensure that it's as good as can be, but also because he has been considering a break from the comic for a while.
Guess we'll see, but I still have very high hopes for this movie.

Not quite, the production process for the show would've started long before they went to air. Chances are Pete approved them before the hiatus.
Ahh... cool, thanks for clarifying.

Take it how you want to, but Pete's sabbatical from all things Turtles has apparently come to an end after finding out how much the script for the movie had changed largely thanks to Mirage's CEO. Apparently he's kind of freaked out about the whole thing and has come back to micro-manage all things film and publishing related from here on out.
What sabbatical? What happend to the script? What the hell is going on?

This is interesting news. I didn't think he'd return to publishing for quite a while, which is fine. It kinda sucks that he got sabbatical for a while, though.

How and why did you recieve/see an email from Steve Murphy?
If this is true about Peter Laird, well I don't blame him FOR GOING NUTS.
Cowabunga Carl, that stupid looking van(the most uncool looking toy ever) what are they doing to Mike?
A childrens entertainer, I cringed when I heard this, could they do anymore to make the Turtles look uncool? probably.
Ooo... TMNT entertaining children... the horror!

The Mike scenario could be funny, but going by the humour in the previous two movies, it could fall flat on it's face and be completely cringe worthy.
A kid kicks Mike in the balls, yeah hilarious, give me a break, that's just tired and stupid.
I don't mind the odd bit of slapstick(although I would rather none) but I hope they don't over do it.
Then again maybe I should just free my mind and send some suggestions to Kevin Munroe.
Maybe they should have Donatello going around dressed as a boy scout selling cookies.
Maybe Raph could help old people in a care centre.
Now that would really make my day, that and Wolverine in his standalone movie useing his claws to turn soil in a garden centre.
You want to see ninjas ninjaing.
Really, I agree with you, but I'm not ready to dismiss it out of hand. I seriously doubt they're trying to make Mike look uncool. True, children's entertainers are not "cool"... but then again I've never cared what's hot and what's not.
People are gonna go into this with preconceived notions no matter what, 'cuz TMNT is inescapable and everyone has an opinion on it... so chances are that they'll see what they want to see, for the most part.

Yeah I know what you're saying, I guess they're are just trying to appeal to everyone, kids, 20 somethings that used to be fans as kids themselves, the mirage comics fans, new toon fans etc.
I dunno, I guess I always wanted to see a TMNT movie with an Indiana Jones type of feel, people of all ages can enjoy it, but it's still dark with lots of adventure and peril, and doesn't make the characters seem stupid for a cheap laugh.

Well... I have to admit - I actually didn’t receive it myself, sorry. AND I got the details wrong. A friend of mine knows someone over at Mirage or something, and they were discussing the new film and the status of the comics when the guy mentioned that Peter’s hiatus had finished and that he’d come back to focus solely on the film. Looking back on that post, it doesn’t read the way I intended it to, as I really only glimpsed the email, and I read it as being FROM Murphy (which it wasn’t) - the guy said the news of Laird’s early return came from Murphy though.
I know it's kind of shady information, but at least people’s worries about the film’s direction can be put to rest now that Pete’s back overseeing the final stages.
Tsk tsk... uncertain sources. Shame, shame, puppydog shame.
Or ... rat... er... ratty shame. Or some kind of rat-humanoid... kind... of... um...

This is intended for "Master Splinter."
I'm really glad that 1) it took this site's administrator the better part of yesterday to grant me posting privileges, and 2) you posted the above-quoted passage... because, man, did you have my blood pressure up yesterday with your pre-edited postings #1 and 6. Especially 6, where you quoted me from some imaginary source. Good thing I gave up cursing. Good thing I've had a chance to cool down. Good thing you posted your correction, "sensei."
To help set the record straight, I offer the following:
1. Peter Laird has indeed returned to overseeing Mirage Publishing after having taken a hiatus during the past 5 months or so. This means that he will now return to editing "Tales of the TMNT," as well creatively returning to the "TMNT" comic book series. As far as when the latter series will return to our publishing schedule, beats me -- it's up to Pete... but don't look for it anytime too soon.
2. Peter Laird, as far as I know, has never taken a hiatus from overseeing production of the TMNT movie.
3. I don't know where you got the misinformation noted in post #1. There's no truth to it at all that I know of.
4. I saw a 12-minute sort of "Reader's Digest condensed form" of the movie this past weekend (something highlighting the action and imparting a sense of the story and intended for licensees and film exhibitors) and judging by the finished animation that it consisted of... I can honestly say that the film looks absolutely amazing.
5. The Cowabunga Carl stuff is brief and somewhat slapstick and in no way detracts from the (what I consider) dark action-adventure tone of the film. There are plenty of "ninjas ninjaing" and much, much more...

Wow - I feel terrible...
If it helps at all I did get my source "confirmed" and it was a massive case of me jumping to conclusions. My friend and his friend were talking about the new film and the current status of the tmnt and mentioned in the email that he'd spoken/emailed you (Murphy) a few times regarding the comics. When I posted the info I'd read that glimpse of your name as the source - but found out later that it was just a passing mention of your name, so my apologies for whatever grief I caused on your end (I had no idea you guys even read these boards!)
On the flipside, everything mentioned there comes as awesome news, especially the cowabunga carl stuff and that the main TMNT comic looks to be picking up again!

No real harm done, sensei.
I've never actually been to the Technodrome site before and only learned about your postings from a friend who sent me the link to this thread. I had no idea the Technodrome was so... I dunno, capacious (word of the day).
Yeah, it is cool that Pete's returned to comics. We're going to work together on the plots to some of the 5 movie "prequel" comics that Mirage will be putting out in the weeks preceding the 3.30.07 release of the movie. The plots are based on Pete and director Kevin Munroe's "back story" notes... stuff that they wished to have included in the film but couldn't since it would have led to an unreasonable running time.

Firstly I want to say a very warm welcome to the Technodrome Steve!
And secondly thanks for clearing everything up, I think it's safe to say a few people were quite worried by the original post.
I'm very happy to hear Peter Laird has returned to overseeing Mirage Publishing and the TMNT comic. I'm not expecting a new issue until after the movie, but I can't wait to see how the story moves forward, especially Leo and the new Shredder!
Also very glad to hear that he's never taken a break from being involved in the movie and that there's never been any issues with the script.
Glad you liked what you saw. I loved the trailer and if the animation quality is that good in the finished product I'll be very happy. The same goes for the tone of the film I got from the trailer - dark and adventurous but not afraid to use humor and be funny.
I'm really looking forward to the six TMNT movie comics, especially the 5 prequels. I must admit I am curious about the format they will take. Will they be one complete background story told over 5 issues or will it be 1 issue covering the basic back story from the first films (origin, Shredder, etc.) and then 4 issues each focused on a different Turtle in the period between the old films and the new?
Keep up the good work with Tales! You're well on your way to becoming the longest running TMNT comic! Only the original Vol. 1 and the Archie comics have more issues than you now! Here's hoping you can be the first TMNT comic to reach 100 issues!
Thank you, Mr. Murphy, for answering all those questions! Welcome to the 'Drome! I really think all you "insiders" should have a blog at ninjaturtles.com where you could provide your insight. That would rule.
And don't despair, MasterSplinter, at least this thread hasn't been boring! ;)

No need to call me "Mr. Murphy." I much prefer "Mr. Clarify!" (Seriously, you can call me Murph or Murphy.)
Okay, with regards to the 5 "prequel" comics...
They do not bridge any sort of gap between old movies and new movie. What they do is give us more of a "back story" to the new movie. That is, they provide us with additional story material that while not pivotal to the story or events of the new movie, are, we hope, interesting back stories (background material) that relate to either the characters or events of the new movie. Does that make sense?
See, there are five prequels, each focusing on a different character. In order of release:
1. Raphael
2. Michelangelo
3. Donatello
4. April
5. Leonardo
(Sorry, Splinter!)
And in addition -- and in varying degrees of tightness or looseness, depending on the issue -- each issue leads in some way to the next, although not in the usual "to be continued" fashion. (Each issue stands alone as a complete one-issue story.) I guess I'm saying that there are secondary elements to each story that carry into subsequent issues.
Anyway, we just sent the solicitation info for each issue to Diamond for their January issue of Previews, for comics coming out in March.
Oh, and all 5 covers fit together to make one wide single image. I don't think we'd ever put 'em together as a poster but... you get the idea.
Oh oh, and the idea that us Mirage folk should have individual blogs on the Mirage website is a great idea. Me, personally, though... I'd rather have and would need an additional hour or two a day! Blogs, at least for me, take a lot of time. I tried one once... and lost it after one mere posting. How pathetic is that?
I'm not so sure if you can answer this Murphy, being we have a long way to go before the movie hits the screen, but I was wondering: if you hade to describe the movie, would you say it really is "darker" than the previous three or not that much? If not darker, can you describe the tone that the new film will have? I understand if those details can't be revealed at this time and thanks for joining this site. Looking forward to your insight.

Haha... I am 3 times as pathetic... because I've tried to start 3 blogs, but between my work and all my volunteer work and, well, LIFE... they went nowhere fast.
I was thinking one single blog for Mirage associates (maybe with guest contributors too). So people could contribute individually, but there's no pressure to do it like every day or every week, or even every month. The tmnt fans are always craving updates, followups, and stories. Just an idea though. Thanks for considering.
Oh, and if you're still reading here Murphy, one more thing to consider: people who like TMNT really, REALLY want the new movie to succeed for the vitality of the franchise, and many of them would love to help that happen. It would be great if there were promo materials for the fans to collect/distribute (some things, like nifty computer wallpaper, are practically free, for starters).

I'd say it's safe to say that the tone is "dark action-adventure with dollops of humor." By "humor" I mean Mikey. By "dark" I mean it's got some serious fight scenes and a fairly heavy story. Definitely darker than the previous three films.

I hear you. I wish we (Mirage) could help out here but at the moment there aren't any such promo freebies in sight... but as the release date draws nearer I'd bet (and hope) that either the animation studio (Imagi) or North American distributor (Warner Bros) might start providing such things.
The only sort of freebie promo thing that I'm aware of is a CD "mini video game" from Ubisoft that Playmates Toys will be slipping into the movie action figures when they begin to hit retail in early January. Only playable on PCs.

Hey Murph,
I remember my first mango, it seems so long now... At any rate, I have a quick question for you if you don't mind.
Obviously without giving too much away; it was stated several times by Kevin Munroe that the new film will accept the first film and "aspects" of the second film as canon.
What does KM mean by "aspects" of the second film? Again, I'm not looking for crazy spoilers or anything a general answer can work just as well. Thanks for your time.

Now... someone sent me a private email message asking why the pre-Fast Forward TMNT DVDs seem to be disappearing from US retail store shelves. I have no idea... but I'll ask around.
Here's what the dude at the 4Kids/Funimation DVD office had to say:
"With less space at retail, most stores carry very limited older releases. Most (unsold ones) get returned as new ones are released."
So... older DVDs are disappearing except via on-line retailers.
That's the way of the world, sad to say....

Well, at least Raph's is being released first. :D:D:D:D:D:D
Obviously without giving too much away; it was stated several times by Kevin Munroe that the new film will accept the first film and "aspects" of the second film as canon.
What does KM mean by "aspects" of the second film? Again, I'm not looking for crazy spoilers or anything a general answer can work just as well. Thanks for your time.I too have been curious what aspects of the second film means. Murphy, any light you can shed would be greatly appreciated.

Um, I dunno.
So I asked Kevin. Here's what he had to say:
"I'd say the answer to the question is that the things acknowledged from 2 are that Shredder is dead, the turtles discovered TCRI... and that Vanilla Ice is dead. I would say, tho, that the film mostly follows the 1st, and has 'nods' to the 2nd and 3rd for sentimental reasons."

Disappointing ain't it? Could have been awesome, but it wouldn't work now anyway. tOkKa's pursuing his artistic side (http://www.terrible2z.com/) and Rahzar's tied down with the long hours, the investment decisions, the wife, the kids... you know how it is with the busy life of a television executive.

I just read Walking Dead for a website I review for and it completely blew me away! I've never read anything of Kirkman's outside of Marvel, but I am aware of his work elsewhere. Walking Dead has easily made my top 5 comic reads of all time - probably the best-handled zombie literature ever (that includes the Romero Dead trilogy). Anyway, back on topic...
Didn't Peter and Jim used to post previews and sketches and whatnot up at Planetracers.com? It's been a while since I checked it out...

If iris agrees with tookie, and gobo agrees with iris, and none of them use capital letters in their screen names, logic dictates that everyone who has ever written words with uncapitalized letters agrees that Mirage should start a blog.

Hee... no really I hope for some cool scenes too, but above all I'm hoping for good storytelling. I don't think I have to worry too much. :)
This thread is really amazing! I have a question for Murphy. I, as well as many, were wondering about the story for this film. Some seem concerned about the monsters. I just wanted to make sure that the monster angle in the film is done well. I don't know if that sounds right, but monsters against ninjas tends to seem out of place. I love that the movie is story heavy and is darker. I guess this is the last of my fears. If you could kindly answer, I'd be grateful. Thanks Murphy.

I sincerely hope this movie rocks, I hope it does really well and makes the summer movie Transformers look like even worse crap than it already is. We need this Turtles to show the movie makers how to make an 80's property into a movie without alienating fans.
I'm just a little disappointed with the script, when I heard this was a follow up to the original movies I almost crapped myself, but from everything we've seen/heard so far (which I admit isn't much) it seems like the movie should just completely start over. I have faith that Mirage will keep the big movie companies in check though.

I just checked out out the TMNT site and in the updates section: http://www.ninjaturtles.com/html/new.htm--it lists an event that happened recently in which a 11 minute teaser was shown to international buyers. Seeing that the movie is a mere 4 (well starting next week anyway) months away, I'm guessing promotion will start soon. This hopefully includes new footage (can someone say official trailer?), voice actors and the works. If Spiderman can get his fanfare now, 6 months prior, the TMNT better start cranking it out.

But, I'm sure all of us seasoned fans would rather keep you around than bog you down with protocol. Yes, there should be another trailer... and it should start showing up any day now on certain Warner Bros-released "holiday" movies.
And yes... why isn't the marketing ramping up and at least partially being geared towards us oldster fans? A good question... in need of a good answer. I wish I knew.

Maybe. That's a good point.
Another scenario is that they might release the LS once they they get struck by a bolt of creative lightning, that is once they hit upon an idea that makes the most marketing sense. The right idea or moment or what have you.
And a further scenario might be that they simply shelve the LS episodes and run them in the future, like, for example, as an "all new" season following the FF seasons (should the FF seasons end). The old school model of airing it first then releasing it on DVD.

I seem to recall someone saying on the boards a while back that FF was on the cards to come after the LS anyway, so if there was some sort of chronological reshuffling done over at 4Kids then that sounds like something that could happen. As you said, it probably depends most on how FF does in terms of popularity and all - they may extend the reportedly planned duration of the idea...

The LS was the original Season 5 (but was only 13 episodes in length). It got yanked and replaced by FF's 26 episodes. But then FF got split into 2 seasons of 13 episodes, with the first half running beginning Fall 06 (as the new Season 5) and the other 13 slated (at least for now anyway) for Fall 07. Since there are no firm plans just yet for Fall 08 (too early, is all) and no clear reading on the popularity of FF, the fate of LS may be unknown for some time....
As far as chronology is concerned, I guess once (or should) the turtles return from the future, then they could theoretically be popped into any non-FF storyline, including the LS....

I was just wondering if you have any idea of the new movies European/UK/Eire release date?
Most releases here if not worldwide usually end up appearing a month or two after the US, that would mean TMNT being released during the summer in Europe. Does that mean it might not be released until the Autumn to avoid the big blockbusters?
But then FF got split into 2 seasons of 13 episodes, with the first half running beginning Fall 06 (as the new Season 5) and the other 13 slated (at least for now anyway) for Fall 07.
As if FF wasn't progressing too slowly already... And, we've already seen ten of them. Shoot. :( So, that ammendment to the rules I mentioned earlier... we're gonna call it Murph's Law. Cool?

Also chill a bit Manthatwouldberaph - did you read what the other options were? Just because the plans for the DVD have been yanked doesn't rule it out completely. Since the lost season won't be released any time soon, would it be possible to find out any info about the utrom shredder and how he learned ninjutsu and started the foot clan. Well, the hoped-for plan is that the movie opens simultaneously in as many markets --especially North American and UK/Europe-- as possible. That said, it is up to our foreign distributor, the Weinstein Company, to pull this off. The Weinstein group is relatively new to this "foreign distribution" game but we have faith that they'll pull it all together. If or when I hear otherwise, I'll post an update (but I often hear things like this after the fan community does!).

Ah, um, er, let's see, don't wanna give too much away (that would cause me to lose what little superpowers I currently possess). So...
Utrom Shredder learned ninjitsu from the Foot Clan... back in the day. What day? you ask. Like back a few centuries. Wasn't this revealed in Season 3 or 4?
Can't answer anything related to the Ninja Tribunal, though. That would spoil the surpises inherent in the Lost Season! Sorry.

Hey there Murphy, very cool of ya to be posting on here. Anyway I have 4 questions (if it's okay heh).
1. Will the news on who is the voice cast of the 4 turtles be released pretty soon?
2. Is this more of a Leo-centered story, or will each turtle have there moments of glory/to shine (i'm a big Raph fan so i had to ask lol)?
3. Have you heard any of the music from the soundtrack by Graeme Revell, any hints of how it is like?
4. Not sure if you can answer this one...any word on, or if there will be, a special edition of any of the 3 previous tmnt movies (although i figure since they are new line cinema films, probably not) since it would be good promotion for the new film?

Hi Murph!
I'm curious as to how closely tied to the movie the 'prequel' comics will be. Without giving anything away, are they similar to the latter Dreamwave stories (where, if one chose to, they could be read as unofficial Tales of the TMNT stories somewhat in line with the Mirage continuity) or closer in nature to the Archie books (where they exist in a completely different universe and finding an unofficial place in the Mirage/Image continuity is pretty much impossible)?
Thanks Murph!

Murphy, I'm curious, what projects are you working on right now? TMNT and otherwise. Do you have a website?
Thanks for asking.
I think I'm the only person in the world without a website....
However, I recently bought a domain name --www.murphopolis.com-- and hope to have it up and running sometime in January.
With the two FF seasons in the bag I don't have any TMNT 'toon scripting to do in the near future, although I'm working on a screenplay version of my Image Comics mini-series, Umbra.
I have a six-issue comic book mini-series nearing completion, with art by Dario Brizuela. I hope to shop it around to publishers this winter.
Mike Hawthorne and I are working on a 120+ page graphic novel called Sturgeon Creek... my first foray into autobiographical comics (so, technically, it's not really a graphic novel now is it?). We've just crossed the halfway mark but don't expect it to be done until late Spring 07 at the earliest.
And I'm in the planning stages of another 6-issue series, also creator-owned, more a string of one-shots than a series.
Plus my wife (the poet and short story writer Sonia Pereira) and I keep meaning to start collaboration on a novel but dirty diapers keep getting in the way....

Hey Tristan.
The prequel titles are totally tied into the movie (and movie comic book adaptation) and thus you're right, they're more like the Archie books in that they comprise a TMNT universe that is based solely on the world and events of the movie. Or, I suppose, movies, in that the new movie does continue the Shredder-is-dead plotline from the very first Turtle movie.
So, dang, we have yet another TMNT universe! How many does that make? Something like 7, right? Let's see:
1. Mirage comic book universe
2. Original cartoon universe
3. Archie comic book universe (which began in the original cartoon universe but then veered off into its own)
4. Movie 1 and new movie universe
5. Movie 2 and 3 universe (I don't think Kevin Munroe's "nods" to these films in the new film put them in the preceding universe... or do they?)
6. Image comic book universe
7. New cartoon universe (includes FF plotline and Dreamwave comics)
Is that it? Do we count the universe of the Mexican TMNT comic book series (based on the original cartoon but then this too wound up creating its own universe)? The Spanish comic book series (ditto)?
Oh, and what of the Live Show (shudder)?

Thanks for that Murph - at least the universes are all distinctly different and don't jump all around the place. As much as I love reading Batman, the mere mention of things like Infinite Crisis and Earth 2 makes my brain want to implode!
One final question regarding the movie (and if it can't be answered that's cool): given the distinctly different nature of the current animated series and the film, have any plans been put in place to spring a new animated (be it 2d or 3d) series out of the film - should it prove to be what I'm sure is a predicted success?

1. Yup. I know of 3 famous actors whose agents have already agreed but the contracts haven't been signed yet.
2. Hmm. I think one can safely say that both Leo and Raph get equal air-time.
3. No I haven't... but my understanding is that the incidental music is by Marco Beltrami (Hellboy, Terminator 3, The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys, etc.).
4. No idea. I know that we tried to get Movies 1, 2 and 3 to be included as gifts-with-purchase items with those "giant movie Turtles" that Playmates put out a few months back, but we were only able to secure the rights to the third movie. Not sure exactly why... but it could mean that New Line is thinking somewhere along the lines of your reasoning.

Wow I'm away for work for one night and Murphy gives out news galore!
Firstly I'm very glad the movie will have Ninja Vs. Ninja action! TMNT Vs. Foot just as it was in the good old days!
Can't wait to see the new trailer, hopefully it will show up online at the same time it hits the big screen, I've still not seen the teaser at a UK cinema!
I feel like I want to cry about the Lost Season! If it is just a case of wanting the best marketing opportunity I think releasing it in March with the film, or later in the year when the movie hits DVD would probably be the best times to release it.
As far as chronology is concerned, I guess once (or should) the turtles return from the future, then they could theoretically be popped into any non-FF storyline, including the LS....
So you're saying the chronology could (for TV purposes) be shifted to Season 4 - FF - LS? I guess that could work. For continuity purposes say Season 4 ended with Good Genes, then Fast Forward happened, then the TMNT returned to the present and we get "Ninja Tribunal" as the first episode of a 14 episode Season 7 (assuming FF only has 26 episodes/2 seasons). I think I'd still put LS before FF on my DVD shelf, but for TV that could work really well.
Or, since FF will be over in 3 weeks, maybe they could air LS early next year around the launch of the movie? That would be a good promotional tie-in for 4Kids to help boost ratings! And they could release the DVD later in the year alongside the movie DVD as well.
Interesting as well that FF has been split into 2 seasons of 13 episodes rather than 1 season of 26 episodes. First time I'd heard about that! Does that mean we're going to get a cliff hanger in 3 weeks? Hard to believe the season is nearly over with already!
As for your universes question, personally I'd put all 4 movies into 1 universe as, whilst only certain points from 2 (and nothing from 3) will be properly acknowledged in the new film, nothing will be contradicted and there will be minor references to them. Of course if there are contradictions in the new film then there will be 2 seperate universes.

Hi, Murphy. Just want to greet you, and saw how completely nice it is of you to come and talk to us. Welcome!

2. Hmm. I think one can safely say that both Leo and Raph get equal air-time.
So, does this mean that it's going to be like the first movie and have Don as a completely minor, back character? I certainly hope that this is not the case. Why is there no love for fans of the other two? (Don's my favorite for going on, oh, 20 years now... Leo's in second). Anyhow, I certainly hope there is equal amounts for all, and not have a Leo or Raph story. We've done that with two of the movies already.

Can you tell them of my tears? Heh. Man, I've been looking from that salvage from FF since it was announced. Do they not think it will sell properly? I can't imagine them not making money from it, as most everyone here (me, especially!) were looking forward to this as a saving grace. I truly loved the 2K3 series (I don't count FF).
Also, the fact that it is now two seasons long worries me. I thought it was supposed to be one season (another dream, crushed)... Can't they go back to the past??
Seriously though, tell them I cried a little. I'm a woman, it may just work on them. ;)

Also you left out the Anime TMNT and "Our Friend Power 5". LOL.
In all seriousness, it's cool that the TMNT have so many different variations, yet are all based off of the same comic line.

I like your universe post. Looks like we're on similar "dumb" pages. And yeah it looks like I neglected the anime universe and videogame universe(s).
Re the Mexico comic: I think it was a weekly and sometimes featured some sort of anthropomorphic tiger or jaguar (not Jagwar) or puma or other big cat type.
I thought the anime was an extension/tangent of the classic 'toon. Actually, I thought the same would apply to the CGI movie, it being a slight reinvention of the trilogy. But, you would know better than any of us about the new movie.
EDIT: Actually, that would put the Archie universe as a spin-off of the classic 'toon universe since they shared the same initial stories. And, thusly, Mirage's comic would simarly be related to the new 'toon.
AmIright?

I'd say you are with Archie being a spin off of the original cartoon universe since they did share identical opening adventures before each going in a different direction (which I believe was to be the same with Dreamwave and the new show but that comic got cancelled before that could happen).
I wouldn't link the continuities of Mirage and the new toon in that way. Yes the new toon takes a lot of influence from the comic, but there's no real shared stories (look at Vol. 1 #1 compared to "Things Change").

Yeah, a "first stage approval" (packaging design) to a 3-disc DVD set of the Lost Season... but only for Australia and New Zealand.
And it's now 12 episodes, not 13.
Seems 13 episodes entered into production but one episode got halted early in the animation process due to its story content being "too over the top." Whatever that means. Apparently, though, that missing 13th episode doesn't affect the continuity of the story arc.
So... you folks Down Under will get to see the Lost Season hit retail sometime over the next few months.

True. There's no denying that these universes are not identical at any point. But, this is a notable relation. I was thinking more along the lines of ep #16 "The King vs. Donatello #1. Those two are about 3% away from being identical stories. Unfortunately, I can't think of a defining term for this sort of relation other than entwined (or for the Marvel Comics fan, "What If", and for the DC Comics fan, "Elseworlds"; I believe Pete's more a DC fan though).
As far as the DreamWave book, while it started with simply a skewed POV on the stories, it had gotten to all-original stories with the intention of spining-off from the show's original premises.

This is probably the first time we Aussies have come up good on a DVD release :D Can't wait! I'll have to keep you all posted if and when it hits...
I kinda saw the TMNT2K3 series as being somewhat similar to Marvel's Ultimate books - essentially the same characters you know and love, and familiar stories, but revamped and altered to better reflect the times and ideas of newer creative teams. I suppose as we saw, it also gives Peter a chance to expand on the Mirage universe ala the Battle Nexus. Given how far ahead comics are put into production (but also bearing in mind how far ahead TV shows have to be planned) I'd be interested in finding out which came first, the new comic's Battle Nexus or the new show's Battle Nexus...

Guessing they mean "Dungeons-- er, "Demons and Dragons". But, three discs for 12 eps? Wacky... I bet if we ever get to read a script or anything, we'll think that they're being hypersensitive again like they were about "Insane in the Membrane". Maybe the reason why America is put on hold is so they can revisit and complete the ep? Yes, I dare to dream...

The Turtles DVD's must have done some decent dollars here. There's a few different sets available in Oz that I'm pretty sure never came to the US. I've got a feeling what gets released and how all comes down to the distributors or licensees for each country. Remember, we got Insane in the Membrane aired as per usual, and the UK had those 2 Disc sets back when it all kicked off...
Anyway, here's the details:

Aww... No fat, disgusting slob of a psycho relative for Hun...
Well at least it's coming in some form then! I guess I'll import this if there's no word of a US release before then. Though I'll still be buying the US release as that should include "Ninja Tribunal".
Murph, is there any mention of special features on the packaging? I'm just wondering if there may be a script for "Nightmares Recycled" since the episode isn't included.
Also was the episode 100% cancelled and not produced because it was too "over the top" or just not included in the Oz release for that reason? I'm only asking as the official site put up the episode guide, including that episode, after production was complete and also because it states "Mirage and its partners decided to finish production on the "Ninja Tribunal" episodes (since much of the work had already been completed) and release them directly to DVD." I thought this would avoid another "Insane in the Membrane" situation. I don't doubt you, but I just wanted to double check since the info we've heard about the Lost Season has changed so often I wanted to be completely sure.
I don't know how much say you have over the DVDs, if any, but if "Nightmares Recycled" isn't going to be on the set (whenever it finally gets released in the US) could you ask Peter Laird/4Kids/Funimation to try and include the episode script and any animation/story boards/dialogue that was done as a special feature. I'd love to see the episode as story boards with voice over and sound effects if that's possible! Would be a great special feature and make the wait seem more worthwhile for fans who've been waiting so long to see these episodes!

Us Aussies are so far behind on DVD releases that it isn't funny. And recently I can't even FIND the goddamn things. But this has most definatly made my day. Words alone can not even discribe my gratitude to your snippet of infomation. Thank you :)
But it is a shame to see only 12 of the 13 episodes are on DVD. You would think that a box set would have all of the episodes on it instead of missing out on one. Oh well. As long as it's the Lost Season, I'm happy :D *runs around in circles singing all of the turtle songs she knows*
So, by "over-the-top", do they mean that "Nightmares Recycled" was too violent or just too far-fetched? But, it would be an awesome extra to see a script for it on the DVD. While watching an unfinished ep is preferable to reading tiny letters from my TV screen, don't have them go bankrupt to appease the fans. I'd rather strain my eyes than make 4Kids believe that TMNT isn't a profitable venture. ;)

For whatever reason or reasons (unknown by me) the LS episodes are off the planning release board for North America. At least until someone thinks they can make money off of them. (Or am I being too cynical here?)
However, foreign DVD licensees --and, I imagine, broadcasters-- are free to buy whatever episodes they want from the US, aired or unaired. Hence the Oz-NZ release.

Fair point Gobo, I don't want them to go bankrupt to please the fans.
But if they started animation for the episode that should mean that the storyboarding was done and dialogue was recorded. As far as I'm aware dialogue is recorded to the storyboards and then animation is done around that to get things like lip-sync right. So technically if it reached animating the storyboard/dialogue video should have already been done so they could include it on the DVD if they were feeling generous towards fans.
True, but it really depends on how generous the ceative team and voice actors want to be.

I was told that the script and storyboards were completed and that animation had begun but that during the early stages of the animation someone (or more likely, someones, as such decisions rarely come down to one person) pulled the plug on the animation (and hence the episode) because the Garbageman-Hun, um, relationship, was "too much" for children's television.

I'm not sure if that plays into things. My sense is that if the production on the episode was halted because it was too strong (or too much or too whatever) for children's television then the same reasoning would hold for children's DVDs.

That's interesting. If the script and/or storyboards don't make it as a special feature I'll have to remember to ask you what exactly the "relationship" was, but for now I'll hope we at least get some form of the episode on the DVD set as a special feature.

For what it's worth, Don's my favorite as well, and I agree that historically (in the more "serious" of the myriad TMNT universes) Mikey and Don have often taken a back seat to the Leo and Raph dyad and its surface antagonism.
That said... I really can't give away any more of the story than I already have. Sorry.

I should clarify this lest someone think I'm referring to a same-sex relationship. I'm not. (I would hope that such a relationship would be okay for children's television.)
The Garbageman-Hun relationship was more along the lines of a circus side-show type of relationship. (Don't wanna give it away!)
A tip of the hat to gobo on this one...

I'll import it if I have to! This is BS for 4kids to do this. They don't even try!!!! Ugh!!!!!!!!!!
Chill. They're trying to run a business here, and they just think that it's better for business to save the bunch for a rainy day. Being that TMNT is my only reason for tuning in, they want to keep my viewership as long as they can. Seriously though... it's all about me. *tries not to smile*
But, on the topic of homosexuality in children's entertainment: the bottom line is that the conservatives won't allow it. That's why the bad guys who had a romance in Sailor Moon's first season were tweaked for American audiences. The skinny one was dubbed as a woman. In a later season, when we are introduced to a lesbian couple on the heroines' side, they are still omitted from the televised versions.

Sitting here doing licensing approvals and what do I find in today's batch?
Yeah, a "first stage approval" (packaging design) to a 3-disc DVD set of the Lost Season... but only for Australia and New Zealand.
And it's now 12 episodes, not 13.
Seems 13 episodes entered into production but one episode got halted early in the animation process due to its story content being "too over the top." Whatever that means. Apparently, though, that missing 13th episode doesn't affect the continuity of the story arc.
So... you folks Down Under will get to see the Lost Season hit retail sometime over the next few months.
{rant}
what the hell?!?!? That's' bull.....this is so common...we dont get TNM eppies, now we don't get the Lost Season?! Can't you stand up for this? Disapprove it until they agree to releaase it to the states and INCLUDE that 13th ep! thats so wrong!
What country is TMNT from anyways?! (no offense Aus/NZ!) Why aren't WE getting first releases?! It's like everybody gets the cools stuff before the country of origin! {/rant}

It's probably because 4kids wants everyone to buy the Fast Foward DVD set coming out, so they delayed the Lost Season so people don't get distracted.
Pretty obvious business decision, I'm sure the Lost season will be released in the U.S. eventually.
My sense is that if the production on the episode was halted because it was too strong (or too much or too whatever) for children's television then the same reasoning would hold for children's DVDs.Do you think these same people would have stopped production on 'Insane in the Membrane?' And that we only got it on DVD because it was already made?

None taken Buslady. I was wondering the same thing after I logged off last night.
Usually, the US get TMNT DVDs about a year or two a head of us (I remember about a year or two ago that you guys got your release of "What a Croc!", yet only a few months ago did I see it in stores). Yet now WE are getting the Lost Season? This is just strange. Welcomed by us Aussies and New Zealanders, but strange. I would imagine that it would have been released around the world at roughly the same time, or in the same week at least. Maybe we are being rewarded for putting up with the late releases of the DVDs and Games :P But really, I'm very curious about the fact that we are getting the Lost Season before the US. Very curious indeed.
Oh, and believe me, we do NOT get all the cool stuff before you. A while ago all we have in the action figurine section for an entire month was "Deep Sea Diving Michelangelo" instead of the original Mikey with no added fetures. And we don't even have the first movie on sale here, only movies 2 and 3. Well, we are a very strange land *scratches head*

Truly odd... and frustrating. I'm am honestly disappointed by FF and am 99% sure I won't even look at the DVDs when they come out. But the Lost Season... this I will buy gladly. And they decide to pull it off the U.S. schedule... hrmph. I suppose at times like this I need a 5-year-old friend who can help me understand why 4Kids would shove TLS aside for FF. *sigh*
Though I understand if they release it with the movie. I s'pose that'd be all right... then I'd get two awesome things at once. Speaking of which... I may need to go watch the teaser about 50 more times. Frame by frame. :P
It's also a bit strange that the Lost Season is... 3-disc? Unless that's a typo, of course. Because they fit 14 episodes comfortably on 2 discs for Season 4, so why 3 for only 12 episodes? The animation geek in me is bouncing around in my skull shouting "maybe they need extra room for LOTS of bonus features?!?!" but I doubt we'll be quite that lucky.
Chris

I think it's 4 episodes on each disc.
I expect when it comes to the US it will be 13 episodes (12+Ninja Tribunal) over 2 discs. And I'm also hoping for a movie time release, either DVDs in March or on TV in Spring and on DVD when the movie comes to DVD.
I'm hoping that worst case scenario is FF Season 1 this year, FF Season 2 next year, and the LS in 2008 (made 13 episodes by including Ninja Tribunal as part of that season). It's way too long to wait really, but if that's what it takes then I'll accept it.
I think I've worn out the teaser! I want to see a new trailer now!

Dual-layer technology is more expensive for distributors as well as private users. Season 4 discs were the first dual-layers I've ever seen Funimation use. But, I wouldn't mind some bonus features. :D

I agree with you 110%! This official trailer better show up soon! What holiday films is Warner Bros. putting out? Didn't Murphy say they'd show up on those? The wait is killing me. If I was the studio, I'd at least show the Comic-Con footage as a lot of us weren't fortunate to see it.

Raphael: Matt Damon
Splinter: Mako (no joke; r.i.p.)
April O'Neil: Jessica Simpson
Casey Jones: Patrick Warburton

I was told that the script and storyboards were completed and that animation had begun but that during the early stages of the animation someone (or more likely, someones, as such decisions rarely come down to one person) pulled the plug on the animation (and hence the episode) because the Garbageman-Hun, um, relationship, was "too much" for children's television.
Hmm, and yet having them all die is SAINW (One of the best eps to date!) was ok. It seems that their vision of what's 'too much' has shifted, and I'm not sure why. Things went by during the first few seasons that I thought were much more adult than a 'circus relationship' (as you quoted in another post). I wonder why, all of a sudden, they got scared and kiddified the show. It was a bad decision, in my opinion, as other shows get much better stats and have more mature storylines. Kids are not stupid. If they want to watch silly kiddish shows, they will be watching Nickelodeon and the such.
But I digress...

Which meannnnns.... All Leo and Raph, it seems. Heh, sorry, that's just what I glean from that statement. I hope I'm wrong, because I want to see this movie, but I will be incredibly disappointed and very unhappy if it is the case. Makes me want to not go on opening day and wait for some reviews to see the status on this.
It's not just because Don's my favorite, but because I believe in a fair approach when it comes to story-telling and character development. Not to mention fair for the fans.
But thank you for what information you could give me.

well the first part is because they changed people over at 4kids or fox or whatever it is these days...and when the show started it seemed that the people who where in charge either didnt care or liked this version of the turtles.
It would seem the new people want the show to be to much like the old 80's show.
And I agree with you 100% on the movie it will be such a shame if Donatello many of peoples favorite turtle once again gets the shaft in the story.:(
Murphy-san! Thank you for staying and playing with us! One of the things I love about Turtles is that it has so many universes that almost anything is fair game, and there's something for everyone. I really appreciate that y'all have kept pushing the envelope and at least trying to do things that are interesting, even if The Cultural Authorities don't like it. Underneath it all, the turtle clan always has extremely strong family values that are central and essential. Even when the main characters do "questionable" things, it's not usually without room for thought or reflection (on the part of the audience), and I think that's so totally cool!
Fix up your website soon! Though I understand it being a low priority, especially if you've got little Muphies running underfoot. I'll have to bookmark it when I get back from Japan.
oh...
Let me just take a sentence to report that visitng a Ninja Turtles board from Japan is slightly surreal! Glad I got the chance (I actually meant to update my Japan-trip thread but I'm out of time now). :D
gobo, your movie cast list nearly resulted in a tea bath for my cousin's laptop! Where the **** did you come up with that? Although, I must admit, Suzanne Summers as a villain seems rather appropriate... she's a little scary, ne? lol

If that was true, I would be trying not to scream right now
Hopefully the casting is not as extreme as gobo has made it. I do expect we'll see some celebritites. That's not me speculating, Murphy mentioned it:

Hey Murpharama I have a question but it doesn't deal with the movie.
Rather Fast Forward I'd sort of like to know what the staffs opinions of this new move are and why Peter let them do this and what the plans for this Fast Forward venture may be? is it doing well so far or the same as the 2k3 series? If it's doing the same do you think fox would consider bringing the turtles back to the modern day? Also are there any plans to use the storys from volume 4 of mirage?
Oh and one last questions reguarding the show was it always going to be a light hearted future in Fast Forward or had the orignal plans for it been differnt?
as always thanks for your time.:D

Actually, Ben had the role for Michaelangelo, but he declined it when he found out that Matt was attached to the project. He was quoted as saying, "F*** that! I'm not letting this Ben & Matt sh** start up again. It was bad enough when those [fans] thought we were both straight, but now, they'll think I'm trying to win him back from Leo [DiCaprio]!" Will was more than happy to fill the role [for the closet-case].
As for the role of Karai, Mrs. Spears' representatives deny any intended involvement with the project. Mrs. Spears was originally opting for the role of April O'Neil, but had a change of heart when her Mouseketeer sister showed up at the private casting sessions. She now owes nearly $1.3K in audio equipment damages when she was turned away in favor of Ms. Latifa. Her people were just more threatening-- er, convincing than Mrs. Spears'. Plus, she is much cheaper [as long as the craft service stays to her liking].

I would imagine that it (the Lost Episdode) would have been released around the world at roughly the same time, or in the same week at least.
DVD releases aren't like movie releases. Each territory has its own DVD company and its own broadcast company (that is, unique licensees). Since there is no parallel release to DVDs, nor to the (generally earlier) broadcast of whatever episodes, then we wind up with a situation like this where one market (Oz-NZ) gets a DVD release before other markets do.

By "staff" you mean here at Mirage? If so, I seem to be the only one who watches it. For the most part I like the stories but not the rosy vision of the future. But, you know, it is a different show, thus there's little argument that it's geared to a younger audience than the pre-FF episodes.
It's not so much that "Peter let them do this" as it was a mutual decision between 4Kids (both as licensing agency and owners of the Fox Box), Playmates Toys and Mirage.
I think FF is doing as well on Fox Box as the pre-FF seasons did.
FF vs "modern day" is anyone's guess at this point with regards to the Fall '08 season.
If the plug was pulled on the Lost Season (the 12 "Ninja Tribunal" episodes) odds are we won't be seeing any shows based on Mirage's Vol. 4 comics.
And... believe it or not, the FF stories actually turned out quite a bit darker (especially the latter 13 episodes) than was the original "lighter" intent of the show back when it was being envisioned by the parties noted above.

Glad to see info is straightened out.
I'll probably edit this later, if it's been answered, but what's the general feel and relation towards 4Kids lately?
Dan filled me in on why the change in FF was made, but now the Ninja Tribunal episodes are gone from the US release list? 4Kids started off oh so well with an ass kicking show, and now we get this dispensable FF stuff, which is thankfully getting a bit better.. I really did enjoy the wrestling episode, even though I hate wrestling ;).

Heh, it's a murphy multi quote, after just finding this thread :).
Maybe HBO would agree to funding that episode, and airing the Ninja Tribunal arc on it's video on demand services? Could be possible if they get the new movies premeir rights.
As if this can't get more confusing :)
I know, the producers can introduce K-Fed to the TMNT world! Oh, wait, he was never the new popular hot recording artist that Vannila Ice supposedly was! :D
Too bad they can't include an in joke during the credits.... 'The turtles pass a paper with the words, 'Vanilla Ice passes'....', then Cowabunga is heard yelled :).

After reading this, a thought occured. Could it have possibly been Playmates that forced 4Kids to drop the plans on a 'Lost Season' DVD? Since they did throw weight around to bump up Fast Foward.
And if Vol. 4 of the Mirage comics has them walking amongst aliens, wouldn't it be possible to slowly change Fast Foward's direction and just incorporate Vol. 4?
By the way, i just now found out about this yesterday, and i have to say, this pretty much sucks. It's bad enough I'm never able to watch them on Saturday mornings because only 3 stations in North Carolina even carry 4Kids/FoxBox and was always out of the loop on what was happening, having to find out 5-6 months later for DVD's.

I got a question for ya Murph.
So Peter sold his soul to the devil, kids entertainment. No idea how long this contract is for but I assume it's for awhile. Meaning anything TMNT TV related Peter wants to do is kinda stunted. 4Kids owns the show, so does that mean 4Kids could*If they wanted* take the series over and start making it themselves?
This of course would totally ruin the show, but at this it's pretty far gone any ways from what you have said. So my question I guess would pertain to the movie. Let's say the movie does well, and FF fails. Does this mean there is a chance for another turtles movie to be made, or possible CGI show based off the films to be made? Since WB also has rights in TMNT and Imagi. We know this was tried before and never went anywhere but it would be a different ball game after the movie is released.

Where did I say that Peter sold his soul to the devil? No where.
The show is a partnership between Mirage, 4Kids and Playmates, with Mirage (ie Peter) having the greatest creative control over the show. Again, the decision to go FF was a mutual one made by these three parties. And look at the copyright on the show -- it's joint Mirage and 4Kids (Playmates' role is much smaller and does not involve ownership).
On to your other question. If the movie does well, yes you can bet money that there'd be a second one. The success or failure of FF has nothing to do with the movie. The possibility of a CGI show based (or, I suppose, not based) on the movie is anyone's guess at this point -- it's just too far off to predict.

Hmm very interesting..and also kind of sad..I'm sure everyone is quite busy and all. Yes I think that's most peoples problem with it also that everything is just so perfect but it seems things are changing with the turtles around and such. I don't know I still have hope for it I guess that's why I stick around. I mean is there hope should I or is it going to be like this from now on..to sort of answer my own question though it would seem though as if things are already changing.
Hmm so everything was given the ok then even by Mirage It just all seems sort of odd that this all happened it sort of makes it seem like all anyone cares about is making money (as much as I hate to say that).
I mean from all the things Peter wrote about how much he cares about the Turtles and all and that he'd never let the characters go the same way they did in the 80's and the 2k3 show was the way he always wanted it. It all just seems very odd that this would happen. I mean it seems as if the same thing he said he didn't like about the 80's happened again with this show and that is the network has taken over once again. I mean how much creative control does Mirage really have over everything?
And how in the world could Playmates Toys have such a huge role in this all it's so crazy did they have this pull with the 80's show? I mean wow I never had any such idea this all was going on. I think Peter and Mirage were finally 100% in control of the Turtles with things being revised by Fox.
I would hope the next time the Turtles make a come back if they do that They shop them to another network. I mean look at Fox's track record with the turtles First the 80's toon I mean they basically killed any idea that the turtles had come from a great black and white comic with killer art and story's.
Next they Bring us the Next Mutation adding a Girl turtle which was one of the biggest blows in TMNT history. And now this with what allot of people finally think is a good show then they take it away and give out a watered down version of it's former self. I really hope Fox would be the last choice next time for a TMNT revival.
Hmm interesting so is there going to be a fall 08 season?
Hmm again it seems rather odd you say that I can't seem to find a connection between the lost season and the story's found in volume 4 of mirage that take place in the future.
That's also rather interesting so you are doing the witting for the show or am I incorrect?
Oh and one last question that's really bothering me and I'm sure allot of other would enjoy to know this also is how come none of the Archie tmnt story's have ever been considered for the shows or even any of the characters to be placed in them? I mean for instance I ( and many others) were highly disappointed when the wrestling episode of fast forward happened and nothing from the Archie wrestling story's had been used.
I've said it before and I'll say it again to me a perfect blend of the Turtles on TV would be a Mix between Mirage & Archie I think that would be great.
And once again thanks for the time you take to answer this stuff!

After reading this, a thought occured. Could it have possibly been Playmates that forced 4Kids to drop the plans on a 'Lost Season' DVD? Since they did throw weight around to bump up Fast Foward.
No, Playmates cannot "force" 4Kids to do anything.
I think everyone has to remember one basic fact about the Lost Season/Ninja Tribunal: it's pretty much a continuous story arc. A 13-episode (as originally planned) story arc in a children's cartoon series on a "network" with less-than-ubiquitous national market coverage as the Fox Box has (and one that is often pre-empted by sports events), translates into a business fear of "children losing interest due to missed episodes" or children simply having short attention spans. Plus the story arc is rather "heavy" for children. That's why the majority of FF episodes are stand alone and much "lighter." In addition, FF also provided Playmates with an opportunity to "spruce up" and re-brand a toy line, the sales of which had been slipping. Overall, remember/consider that the average action figure buyer is 5-10 years of age... and the prime cartoon viewer 6-11.
And if Vol. 4 of the Mirage comics has them walking amongst aliens, wouldn't it be possible to slowly change Fast Foward's direction and just incorporate Vol. 4?
Sure, it's possible... but it's not likely. But again this is one of those things that is just too impossible to predict at this point.

Pete cares greatly about the turtles and how they are are executed creatively. And he doesn't care that much about making more money. However, as I said in an earlier email, the show is a partnership between Mirage, 4Kids and Playmates (not the network Fox). By partnership I mean each has invested money into making the show. The partnership is a balancing act of special interests, the bottom line of which is making a good show that makes money. Pete has worked very hard to see his vision of the turtles get made into the new cartoon and I think he's been remarkably successful in doing so. At least up until FF anyway.
FF is a different animal all together, one that is more a product of pressure to create a more kid-friendly show and to extend the TV and action figure life of the property. That is, ratings weren't super, toy sales were dropping. Things get tweaked. Compromises get made.
And how in the world could Playmates Toys have such a huge role in this all it's so crazy did they have this pull with the 80's show?
See above.
I mean wow I never had any such idea this all was going on. I think Peter and Mirage were finally 100% in control of the Turtles with things being revised by Fox.
No revisions by Fox. Again see above. Peter has great control over the content of the show but, again, the show's a partnership and sometimes it's a balancing act to keep all partners happy.
Oh and one last question that's really bothering me and I'm sure a lot of other would enjoy to know this also is how come none of the Archie tmnt story's have ever been considered for the shows or even any of the characters to be placed in them?
The Archie comic universe is closely tied into the original cartoon... and we're not allowed to use the original cartoon "universe" in the new cartoon. Nor, I suppose, would "the official we" want to. The old cartoon/Archie universe is not Pete's vision of the turtles....

I agree Playmates new Fast Forward toys are allot better than the ones that had been made for the 2k3 characters.

I know he cares he stresses that he does all the time in the comics or he wouldn't be involved anymore at all. Hmm that's interesting also I always thought it was fox because it's being played on that channel my bad. I didn't know all of that also so thank you for bringing it out into the light :)
Also I agree Peter did a great job until this all happened but oh well he's got the movie to focus on now.
And not to be rude or anything but Playmates and the like really need to take a look back at the past and realize what killed the toy line in the first place and they didn't seem to learn until now with Fast Forward and that's to knock it off with the over abundance of turtle variations All the other characters sell I know they think kids want tun's of the 4 turtles but seriously even growing up with the old show and the old line kids really wanted all those crazy characters sure a few turtles are cool here and there but not when that's really all that's being offered for the most part can you expect to sell tun's of toys to anyone child or fan.
As the old saying goes also You need to spend money to make it and I know allot of people didn't like how cheap playmates was being with the rehashing of old vehicles and using the same sculpts for the turtles over and over.
No revisions by Fox. Again see above. Peter has great control over the content of the show but, again, the show's a partnership and sometimes it's a balancing act to keep all partners happy.
Oi that must be very annoying for him and anyone at Mirage involved I guess it could also be a bit of a let down for people who are writting the show.

Point taken thanks for the answere to that I'll make sure never to expect anything like that then as sad as it all is :ohwell:
But I do have to say in defence of the Archie comics it's leeps and bounds better than the old toon was and it's sad none of that stuff ever got animated.
Hmm ok one more thing any new on the forever war being brought out by mirage or has that been scraped?
And hopefully all this isn't to annoying I'm just trying to put allot of things in peoples minds to rest.

Hiya Murphy!
A friend of mine told me about this post and I read all the way through it, first I'd love to Thank you for taking the time to say hi to us fans and answer so many questions. :)
Second, you mentioned a Warner Brother Holiday Film for the trailer, I've already seen "Happy Feet" and it's not before that movie, so I'm going to take a guess at the only other Holiday Film they're putting out, Unaccompanied Minors. This movie is coming out on December 8th. I'm going to go and see it, if the trailer is before it I'll let everyone here know for sure or not. :)
I'm very happy to hear that the Fast Forward series does get a little darker, though more than anything the art is what has disappointed me with the Fast Forward series, how they draw the Turtles themselves. It just seems less dept in each of them, Leo's scar on his shell is even gone. Was the Character designed changed to show that this is a different type of series from the last 4 seasons that aired? And if they go back to the past, is there a chance of getting the original character design back?
Overall, remember/consider that the average action figure buyer is 5-10 years of age... and the prime cartoon viewer 6-11.
I'm going to have to disagree with this statement here. I know a lot of people from online, conventions and even just going around who are adult fans. I think a poll should be done on either 4Kids web site or the Official TMNT web site to get a real age of what is watching the series and buying the toys. Though the show may be written for that age group, a lot of the returning fans from the original series are watching, along with new fans who liked the dept of the first 4 seasons of the show.
I'm not going to say that kids are not watching it, cause I'm very happy every time a child runs up to me and asks me how much a Turtle Toy cost (even though I don't work at any store, this seems to happen to me a lot. One time it was only seconds after I walked into the store, some child ran up to me holding a Combat Warrior Donatello toy, asking how much it cost. I laughed and took a guess and was right).
In my area 4Kids is ran on Sunday mornings, on the WB network. Now this is a bad thing for a major reason, a lot of people are at church during this time, so when I tell people that TMNT are still on the air, they're in shock and when I tell them when it's on, they can't even watch it. I spend a lot of time promoting the show, comics, DVDs, ect. As people get excited seeing my TMNT Shirt, coat, or even something Turtles I may be holding. I have no problem sharing the information, though it all goes back to the age thing most people who bring it up to me are at least above the age of 15/16.
Another thing I'd like to bring up is, the release of stuff like the "Lost Season" to DVD in other countries, is it also because the sales of stuff like DVDs are better in those countries than they have been here in the United States? I hear sales of the toys, dvds and such are being bought up more else where, which is why more is being made out of country than here. And if so, could that be, because there's more promotion for it else where?
Heh I wrote enough for now, so I'll take a break. Just wanted to say hi and ask a few things. :)
Thanks again for taking the time to answer people's questions and coming here.

I hate to say, around here (SoCal) the FF figures are sitting on the pegs in stores unlike the 2K3 figs which were often empty. Every time I go to Target or Walmart, they're FULL of FF figs...
What kinda stinks, is there aren't any 2K3 figs anymore that I'd like to get my nephews. They're into PRs, I wanna convert them to TMNT!:lol:

Last time I went into the store to see the new figures, I saw what I believe was at least TWO sets of Turtle Variants. The only one I Really wanted to pick up was the Serling figure.
No one has yet to give me conclusive sales proof that Variants sell better than original figures. I think it's just laziness on Playmates part, even though I do realize that it's tough to design a figure.

I'll probably edit this later, if it's been answered, but what's the general feel and relation towards 4Kids lately?
Same as always. Professional and friendly. Why would it be otherwise?
Maybe HBO would agree to funding that episode, and airing the Ninja Tribunal arc on it's video on demand services?
For now the Ninja Tribunal arc has been yanked from all US release schedules: airwave, DVD and VOD.
thanks for answering questions Murphy, a lot of fans don't mean to be rude (if thats how they come) that is just how it comes out, but we appreciate the time you've spent here and giving us some 'inside' info,
while FF is somewhat upsetting i can understand it, I bet it was "we move on a new FF direction or we stop backing the show" so the compromise had to be made and I prefer FF over no TMNT at all,
hopefully the new movie will make really reach a huge audience so we see more 2k3(preferably non FF) or better yet a new show.
I'm excited, when the teaser was released every forum i visited praised it, from, animation, metal, videogame, electronica forums...it has enough internet hype however marketing needs to get into advertising to the general audiences so kids know that its coming and also so older kids from the 80s get nostalgic.
I'm sure the movie will be great, but if it gets the right advertisement it won't just be ignored and could become the movie to get TMNT back in the mainstream eyes,

Hi. This is Michelle, right?
While the "active fan base" may be older and number in the hundreds, the "passive viewer" is the age group I noted earlier and numbers in the millions. Hundreds vs millions. Think about that and how it plays into a corporation's decision making.

Yes, sales dictate further sales. That is, if sales of DVDs are doing well in one country/market, then more DVDs will come out. Likewise, if sales aren't doing so well in another market it's a safe bet that additional DVDs would not come out. The old law of supply and demand.
Oh, and the effects of promotion (advertising) are a hard thing to measure...

I was just wondering if there is any number out there to show this, polls or anything. Just the general reactions is what I've gone by, online and at conventions where you're meeting the people behind not just the comics but the TV series and so on. There was millions upon millions of fans of the TMNT back in the 90's, and usually if you talk to those people to this day they still like TMNT, though some are not sure of the new stuff out there a lot have given it a try. Which is why I have a hard time saying that there would be that big of a difference in the fan bases.
Online I'm on many different forums, more active on some than others.. and there's always different people on the forums, I've even been active on the 4Kids forums in the past, where I found a lot of adults have signed up on to talk about the series as well, some of which I know off of the 4Kids forum in other areas. I guess this is one of the things I have often questioned about the marketing (esp all the contests which us adult fans can not enter, no matter how badly we want to).
Oh, and the effects of promotion (advertising) are a hard thing to measure...
I just wonder about this, though the Turtles do get some ad spots in the 4Kids block on Sundays here, I don't see ads for the show anywhere else. I see ads for the toys every now and than on the Cartoon Network.
A good example right now would have to be the movie. I went to the movies yesterday. Saw Cardboard stand ups for movies that don't come out till May. Saw every poster in the "Coming Soon" were coming out in May, June, and July... some of these movies I've never even heard of, nor has the friends I was with at the theater. Though they're pushing the movies months in advance to make sure the people know about it. Though with TMNT coming out in only a few months, we have little to nothing out there for it.
The times I have seen the Teaser for it, the crowd reactions were GREAT, cheers would wipe the theater. Two of the best Crowds for it, was going to see the "Fullmetal Alchemist Movie. People were talking after the movie how they didn't even know there was a new TMNT movie coming out. It's sad to think, that if I wasn't into the fandom online (if there was no online world)... how little any of us fans would even know about it. This really goes for those who can't get out to theaters too much for money sake, and those who never get to conventions to see the free posters and seek preview book.
This is why I question the promotions lately. I mean, the 4Kids show has been a great ride, even though I never see ads for it other than during the 4Kids block. The toys have been selling in my area to both kids and adults... I talk to people inline if I see the TMNT stuff in their carts... find out if the person next to me is a fan, or if it's for a child. It's always great to meet other fans. I just wonder, if the toys, show and DVDs would do better with some different promotion behind it?
Heh not meaning to get too deep into these subjects. Just been on my mind a lot lately, I felt bad not seeing one movie poster at the theater. And I do promote the stuff as a fan, all the time. So I try to help get the word out.

I'll second that! In the UK DVD sales were so poor that we go combined Vols. 5+6 and 7+8 (each at the same price a 1 normal volume) just so they could finish off the first season on DVD. We haven't had a DVD since so I've had to import the US releases.
I'll probably wait for a US "Lost Season" release as the Region 4 set doesn't include "Ninja Tribunal". And speaking of that, Murphy could Mirage influence Magna Pacific now and ask them to include that episode? The Australian releases ended after Season 2 and "Ninja Tribunal" is key to understanding the "Lost Season" episodes!

Actually I think we may be getting season 3 in the form of another boxed set. It was a little odd - Magna Pacific took ages to release the individual DVD's, then all of a sudden shotgunned season sets of 1 and 2 in these neat little wallet things. If March is the release of the Lost Season, I'm assuming Magna Pacific will release season 3 and 4 in a similiar fashion...
Chris
11-21-2006, 12:28 PM
Fair enough.
But from what I can tell looking at the Magna Pacific website (specifically the episode lists for the Season 2 sets) your box sets are straight repacks of the US DVDs. Hence Season 2 being out of order.
If this is the same for Seasons 3 and 4 then you'll be missing the "Ninja Tribunal" episode as that isn't on any of the US Season 3/4 DVDs and will be included in the (eventual) "Lost Season" collection.
The only way you could get "Ninja Tribunal" is if Magna Pacific makes its own Season 3 and 4 DVDs (which it would need to do if it wanted to seperate the seasons correctly). The same could also apply to "The Christmas Aliens" which was a special DVD and not included in the main volumes.
I've read throught this entire thread and want to say a special thanks to Murphy for answering everyone's questions and add one of my own. Is there any plans of re-releasing the 2K3 dvds as actually season sets in order? I've bought every dvd released but I'd definitely re-purchase them if they got released as Season Box Sets. Thanks in advance.

Has anyone considered marketing the show to an older audience? Or does no one want to invest in or buy the show other than 4Kids? TMNT hardly seems to be a kids show anymore. They can't seem to follow it, and all of the ideas for episodes, and half of the episdoes are "too heavy" for children.
From what I've read, the change in the show hasn't changed the intrest of the children. The ratings are about the same. (Lightening up the show doesn't seem to have done much good for anyone.)

Still, darkening it probably would've made it worse... you know how parents are with these things nowadays. As cool as IITM was, doing that heavy an episode all the time would have parent groups up in arms.

I know what you mean, I haven't seen the teaser or a poster in a single cinema, yet I've seen Transformers posters, and that movie isn't due out until May.
Besides the individual character posters, there doesn't seem to be an official TMNT movie poster, except for the one with the image off Ubisofts TMNT game website, but that didn't look right because the turtles were just pasted into the backround, I hope that's not the official one.

Wooohooo, we finally get to talk to an insider here! I'm surprise I didn't notice this thread until now.
A late welcome to Mr. Murphy from me.
Anyway, I also have a few question regarding the TMNT and I hope you can answer them for me.
You know, one of my favorite hobbies used to be watching TMNT on TV, then go off to play the TMNT games. I can enjoy my TMNT on TV again, but I haven't been able to enjoy the games as much. I know Ubi Soft is handling the new game based on the movie, but how much control does Peter have over who makes the game based the TMNT? Konami used to be the company responsible for making those great TMNT games from my childhood, but the company is no longer what it used to be. The true strength of Konami left the company and formed Treasure. Is it possible to get Peter to consider giving this company another chance to bring back that magic? Treasure isn't a big name studio though, but their list of hits range from Contra, TMNT, Guardian Heroes, to Astro Boy. Making brawlers is their specialty, and I think it would benefit the TMNT to have kickass games being made by the masters of kicking ass. Ubi soft is a top notch company, but the brawler genre's not their specialty. To be honest, brawlers haven't had much success since games started going 3D. I honestly can't think of a half way decent brawler made between 1997-2006.
Still, darkening it probably would've made it worse... you know how parents are with these things nowadays. As cool as IITM was, doing that heavy an episode all the time would have parent groups up in arms.I'm not asking for them to darken it from it's previous state. They could have simply left it alone as they transitioned into the future. I don't know what bothers me more, the bright colors, or the pointy character designs. (I really dislike the pentagonal heads.)

The Archie comic universe is closely tied into the original cartoon... and we're not allowed to use the original cartoon "universe" in the new cartoon. Nor, I suppose, would "the official we" want to. The old cartoon/Archie universe is not Pete's vision of the turtles....
Praise the Lord, and pass the ammunition. I'm so putting this in a sig. That's great news, and it's nice to hear it from someone official. Some people really don't get that this is FACT. Really good to know.
Sure, it's possible... but it's not likely. But again this is one of those things that is just too impossible to predict at this point.
You were dangerously close to a Donnie quote, you realize. ;)
Anyhow, glad to hear that FF gets, at least, a bit darker. I'll never be happy with it, as I was with the 2K3 Series, but hopefully that'll be an improvement. unless, of course, the get rid of Cody (never to be seen or heard from again) and get more back to their original personalities. Hopefully more character growth is in the cards, too.
Alas, I think the only way we are ever going to get another shot at a TMNT cartoon as good as 2K3 was (or even better) is to start over again. It's a shame, too, because it all started out so well... Almost a waste to see it go down this path, but... cest la vie, I suppose.
I hate to say, around here (SoCal) the FF figures are sitting on the pegs in stores unlike the 2K3 figs which were often empty. Every time I go to Target or Walmart, they're FULL of FF figs...
Same here. I had no idea that FF figures sold at all. TRY and find a 2K3 toy here. I see that they're restocked and then gone again the next time I'm there. FF ones, uh... um, they're... always there. Tons of 'em. Dusty.

Ah My Bad then but to come along with Praise the Lord, and pass the ammunition seemed a bit much and sorry to say sent me over the edge with the turtle hate going around these days.
I wasn't referring the 80's toon I was referring to Archie and so was Murphy. The thing that's bothering me the most is the hate for a show (fast forward) that we've seen 5 or 6 episodes for and everyone bashes it to high heaven I say wait it will more than likely get better and I get bashed to high heaven and called a moron. Yet people are praising the new batman cartoon which I have yet to see but they say it didn't get good till the second season so why can't the same be said for this show...I mean shesh give the people who run the turtles a bit more credit than that when one thing goes wrong tuns of people act like it's the end of the world and blow everything way out of proportion.
I mean it's just really sad that nothing from Archie can ever see the light of day at least the hardcore mirage fans can have that. Those of us who love characters like Armagon and Verm-x will never get to see them animated it's just a bit sad and it seemed like you where happy about it.
Here's an example your best friends mom just passed away he or she are crying what do you do...I'd most certainly hope not laugh at them and grab guns lol.
I'm all a bit touchy about it because it's rather special to me and got me through allot of hard times. Not trying to pick a fight but just don't care for it being bashed when it went above and beyond the cartoon ever could which is sad even if that's not what you where doing. And Ninjara doesn't phase me either way I could do without her but I'm not gonna go down the road of why most people don't like her...but I know it's not the same reason as you because we've talked about that before. I don't know and I'm sorry but I guess I just like the turtles and any time anyone makes fun of them or belittles the characters in any way it does get under my skin. Call me a crazy fan I guess lol. I still don't like next mutation though haha.

Pretty much we are going to get an Austraila release then. Which is fine by me. We'll all be happy to import it. However, I'm hoping Peter Laird can get 4kids to release it. But why not just stream it on NinjaTurtles.com? That wouldn't cost anything. That way we can watch it. That's the least they can do.

Dug this up from the distributor's website just a second ago (kinda surprised it was already there if Murph was just checking over the artwork today...).

Here you go;

And here's the list of all R4 TMNT DVDs;
http://www.magnapacific.com.au/index.cfm?action=dsp_search&keyword=ninja+turtles
As you can see they have all the US Singles for Seasons 1 and 2, and then those same singles put together into box sets. That's the reason I asked Murphy if it would be possible for Mirage to suggest to Magna Pacific to include "Ninja Tribunal" on the set since it's really needed for the episodes to make sense! And if the Seasons 3 and 4 are eventually released in R4 if they're the same as R1 (as the first 2 seasons were) then they also won't include the episode!
Edit: Just noticed a small version of the box art has been posted on that first link!
http://www.magnapacific.com.au/slicks/75x125/DBX12542.jpg
Note the use of the movie logo! Clever promotional tie-in, seems 4Kids/Funimation could use some sense like Magna Pacific seem to be showing! The DVD set is also listed as released 7th March, so it seems they're really putting it out there with the hopes that the movie (along with any hype and advertising for the movie) will benefit the DVD set as well.

Good suggestion. Don't know if they'll listen but it's a good suggestion.

Um, that's not the movie logo. It's one of the regular licensing logos. The movie logo is not allowed on non-movie merchandise.
Happy Thanksgiving, Murph! Have a good one.

I'm with you, P and it's not just because I had a hand in the Archie storylines or helped create a lot of the secondary Archie TMNT characters. I just think those were great comics, full of action, adventure and humor... and by a creative team that for a couple of years was highly energetic and totally into the groove of putting out a monthly comic.
Mind you, it was a comic that the editors-publishers at Archie absolutely loathed (they wanted a TMNT comic series that mirrored the show, much like the 3-issue mini-series that started the Archie TMNT comics)... as well as a comic that few people at Mirage took seriously or even gave a crap about. Sad but true.

Ok, I'm sorry, I was thinking I had read somewhere it was more of Playmate's request to skip ahead, I must have misread.
No need to apologize. And note that I had used the word "force" in quotes. While Playmates can't force Mirage or 4Kids to enact certain changes, they certainly have the leverage to "strongly suggest" changes. Know what I mean?

I had no idea that FF figures sold at all. TRY and find a 2K3 toy here. I see that they're restocked and then gone again the next time I'm there. FF ones, uh... um, they're... always there. Tons of 'em. Dusty.
Same at my local TRU. Guess that proves a point re the validity of the switch to the FF storyline and re-branding...?

I know Ubi Soft is handling the new game based on the movie, but how much control does Peter have over who makes the game based the TMNT? Konami used to be the company responsible for making those great TMNT games from my childhood, but the company is no longer what it used to be. The true strength of Konami left the company and formed Treasure. Is it possible to get Peter to consider giving this company another chance to bring back that magic?
Well, it's not a matter of having "control" over who gets the license to make TMNT games. It's business. Ubisoft beat out Konami's offer for the TMNT movie license and presented Mirage with a very creative game play idea for their game based on the movie. To be honest, I don't know if Treasure was even considered.

I'm not sure but my guess is that the current group of partners behind the revival of the show decided to go for a broader audience (young) so that they could try to create (or, I suppose, recreate) an across-the-boards successful licensing launch (show, toys, video, etc.).
However, it is something worth considering in the post-FF world. And then there's the wild card that is the movie. No telling how its success or failure will affect the future of the TMNT on television.
From what I've read, the change in the show hasn't changed the interest of the children. The ratings are about the same. (Lightening up the show doesn't seem to have done much good for anyone.)
Word.

I know what you mean, I haven't seen the teaser or a poster in a single cinema, yet I've seen Transformers posters, and that movie isn't due out until May. Besides the individual character posters, there doesn't seem to be an official TMNT movie poster, except for the one with the image off Ubisoft's TMNT game website, but that didn't look right because the turtles were just pasted into the backround, I hope that's not the official one.
Yeah, believe it or not there still isn't an official TMNT movie poster. We're hoping Warner Bros comes through by early December.
Meanwhile, I've just learned that the NEW TMNT movie trailer will be shown with the film Eragon slated to open in the US on December 15.

I hear you. While I don't have any figures I know that Playmates does a lot of market research in terms of who's buying their products and I trust what they're telling us.
Related to what I posted earlier to you. I don't view the "passive viewer" audience as a fan base... but as, well, passive viewers, kids who watch the show for a year or two and hopefully buy some toys before growing up and moving on to another show or licensed property, or sports, or, better yet, getting into schoolwork.

Thanks Murph! Hope Magna Pacific decide to include it if Mirage ask!
And sorry, it was small and I was in a rush (posting whilst having breakfast before work) and I just thought it was the movie logo as, to me, it looks much closer to the "TMNT" logo used by the movie than it does to the logo normally used by the 2K3 TV show. My bad!
Happy Thanks Giving to everyone who celebrates!
And I'll be very happy if the trailer is with the same film in the UK! I was going to see the film anyway, but a TMNT trailer would get me there on opening day.

I'm very glad you guys didnt go with what they wanted, archie was one of my favorite comics when I was growing up.
But I was also wondering if there are any plans to start up a TV related fast forward comic version? Its been a while sense we've had a TMNT comic that was based off of the current show.

Didn't know Archie was so against it. This series was GREAT! I'm going to be honest, as a kid I truly enjoyed it more than the Mirage comics. The story was solid, the characters were wonderful, and artist like Chris Allan and Ryan Brown just blew me away! I really grew attached to those characters, and when I would see them in the cartoons like Mondo Gecko and Wingnut I'd be disappointed at how much they're not like the characters we knew in the Archie comics. Only character I remember seeing on the show before in the Archie comic was LeatherHead, so it felt weird to see him good ;)
I didn't become a fan of the Mirage comics till "City at War" I went back and read all of the Mirage comics back to back before going to Turtle Con 1992, and that's when I finally started to enjoy Mirage.
I really wish the Archie series didn't end, it was it's own world... no longer seen by fans as 'A part of the cartoon world' but a comic world of it's own. I miss the Mighty Mutanimals and Ninjara. I also miss April training with her sword ;)
Well I'm off for now, hope everyone enjoys their ThanksGiving!!!! :)

Yea that's pretty much how I was also and how I feel to I also wish we would have seen more of Bellybomb I really liked that guy. And I also had no idea Archie was so against the comics it just goes to show you creativity and great ideas are never well received by companies.
I also find it funny how when most of us fans here about a tmnt wrestling episode we atomaticly think of stump asteroid.

That's good news. That film will actually attract some more adult movie goers. I don't have a problem with them advertising to younger audiences (Ant Bully, etc.) but they also need to advertise to the older sci-fi/super hero crowd. Good call guys!

Personally I think it will mean more people import the set, after all one of the main reasons people would wait for a US release is the inclusion of that episode. Of course even if they include the episode I'd probably pick up the R1 release as well to show support (especially if we can get the "Nightmares Recycled" script as a bonus feature).
Trist I'll email them as well.
Murphy, I know you said the chances of getting storyboards and/or dialogue for "Nightmares Recycled" as a bonus feature was slim (and I perfectly understand your reasoning), but what do you reckon the chances are for the script? If the chances are we won't be able to get it on the DVD set, could Mirage post it on the site for the fans to read? Content wouldn't really be an issue then!
