View Full Version : I watched the first 8 episodes of NT:TNM and...

It really wasn't that bad. I watched the 5 part "East meets West" arc, Staff of Bu-ki Silver and Gold, and Meet Dr. Quease. There was quite a bit cut between the feature length release and the episodes themselves, but what surprised me was the fact that there was actually stuff that was cut fro the episodes put back into the movie (unless the Aussie versions I watched were edited themselves).
I've gotta admit, of all the TMNT series, this may be my least favorite (or maybe tied with >>), but even this wasn't too bad. It seemed like the logical step from TMNT: Secret of the Ooze, a live action TV series that kept (close to) those characterizations and it's style of humor. Since TMNT 2 is probably my least favorite movie (Yes, I like TMNT 3 better, the better plot makes up for the poorer costumes.) that may not be saying much, but in retrospect this series ain't as bad as all that. The biggest down side was Venus herself. I wish we'd have seen April and Casey and more Shredder (heck that was a bit that was cut from the actual episodes, Shredder's "defeat" at the hands of Shinobi magic). But I've gotta admit, it wasn't nearly as painful to watch as I thought it would be.
Maybe I'm just one of those fans who would take anything TMNT that was offered to me, but all in all NT:TNM really didn't seem as bad as everyone lets on. I would almost make this a "NT:TNM - the appreciation and discussion thread" but I'm sure there'd be no one who'd actually post here....so just keep it civil, please.

Yeah, it's not that bad. I remember liking it back in '97. I recently watched the five-part premiere, and I have to say, it drags on. They re-use footage so much. I didn't really care for the five-part arcs, but the standalone eps were ok.

I really don't see why people hate the 2nd TMNT movie so much. I liked it better then 1 and 3. 1 tried to be something it couldn't, 3 just had terrible production values and Feldman sucked as Don.
2 was like a live action version of the old Toon. I give it props for that. It was what it tried to be, had the best costumes, way less errors then 1, and whoever did Don in that movie sound a lot better.

Don't hate it....heck from this thread, I think it's safe to say that I don't hate any TMNT offering. I just liked it least, is all.

I think the most disliked element was Venus. I can halfway handle the show, some stuff makes me just cringe, but mostly they're characterised okay...but jeez, Don was an arrogant buttbrain!! I was waiting to hear "I'm so F***in brilliant!"
There are some good bits, like the part when Raphs going up the ladder and they all stop him, trying to get him to wait, go as a team...that was good...and the Leo/Raph practice fight piece....there's sometimes good bits but not enough.
The animatronic heads could have been done better.

You'll find that there's a lot more NT:TNM fans than you think. It's just a large number of fans who dislike the show make it known that they don't like it for various reasons. I remember when it first came out in '97 (around that time), and I didn't see very many negative responses. It was only after the show was cancelled, really. People were so excited to see a new TMNT show, especially live action and they wanted to know where this "girl turtle" thing would go.
I've talked with some of the crew members from TNM, and they all seemed like they enjoyed working on the show and had a lot of fun with it. They put their heart and soul into the show and worked with what they had. I noticed this before I ever talked with a crew member.

I dont mind it that much myself Dr. Quease being my favorite part of the show. I just wish the production values had been better but really thats what you get for working with the kiodo(sp) brothers lol:lol:
The biggest flaws it had for me was bad mouth movement, how giant splinter was, Ugly ass shredder, And Venus the guys were pretty much the guys to me I really enjoyed raph in this show I think just about as much as I do in 2k3.
But what I really loved was don's almost swaying to the dark side with Quease or trying to bring him over to good I never quite figured it out lol.
Btw I've told people before but had the show gone on we'd have seen allot more, such as one of the turtles moving out, a cast member passing on, April, Casey, The Government coming after the guys much like agent Bishop, And I'm sure lots more I also have to say the toys have to be some of my favorites and it's a shame the linbe didnt go one because we were gonna get a normal dragon lord figure.
Just a few days ago, I was looking at this UK DVD on eBay, seriously considering getting it just because it's TMNT history even though it was the second example of me turning my nose up at TMNT. The first was the third movie. In as much as I just watched the third movie for the first time in nearly ten years (in a TMNT trilogy matinee I had with my nephew by projecting them 6' wide on a bedsheet) without vomiting, I think I might be able to stomach TNM. Since I had unfairly judged the third movie, I can't say that I hadn't done the same with this series.

I really have to disagree. But then again, I haven't seen TMNT 2 in so long. The only things I didn't like about TMNT 1 was how ugly April was (though she did look enough like the comic version) and how Raph was the one who was beaten badly, leaving all the stories to shift off a bit from the comic, iei Don and Casey being best buddies. But those are just small nitpicks. TMNT 3's main weakness was that they were too cheap to get Henson to make new suits. TMNT 2, having read the comic seems like they focused too much on Shredder. Not to mention anything with Vanilla Ice in it makes me Queasy.
TNM doesn't sound too bad looking back on it, but Venus TOTALLY ruined the series for me, and that whole thing about Splinter in the other dimention pretty much reaked. I would be willing to give it a second look, if I am able to.

TMNT 1 - first April wasn't ugly...
Second, don and casey weren't best buddies. They had one scene where they were working on the car, and that's because Raph was out of it. In a later scene Don is pretty much ripping on Casey until he leaves and sleeps in the truck. Raph is the one that fights casey first just like the comics, and is the one that Casey came looking for "hey what'd you do with my little green friend there". I thought Raph being the one to get beaten up held more with his character, he would be the one to venture by himself.
I agree they could have upped the friendship between Casey and Raph like they did in the new cartoon, but really they only had so much screen time.
1 > 2 > 3 is how I look at it.
Also to stay on topic, TNM sucked for the most part but has it's good qualities. The toys were great and heading in a better direction than the recent toys did. Venus almost might have worked if she wasn't so damn annoying. Still it was just Teenage Mutant Ninja Power Rangers and that turned me off as a kid.
The only things I didn't like about TMNT 1 was how ugly April was (though she did look enough like the comic version) and how Raph was the one who was beaten badly, leaving all the stories to shift off a bit from the comic, iei Don and Casey being best buddies.
I wouldn't go so far as to say they were best friends, but they needed to give Don a purpose. It seemed like he was just a goofball tagalong. I can just imagine negotiations to reprise the role in TMNT III: "Tell Mr. Feldman he can only have the role back if he doesn't balk at every nerdy scene Donatello is the focus of this time around by penalty of legal action". Too bad my salesmanship sucks. Being a talent agent would be too awesome. ^_^
The first movie April was closer to being a redhead (auburn, I think), and I thought she was more attractive than the cover-model-wannabe she was replaced with. But, to call her "ugly"... To each their own, I guess. :ohwell:

The ugliest april was in TMNT3, short hair sucks. Especially when it's paired up wth a leather jacket and jeans. I'd take the yellow jumpsuit any day.
I only saw a couple episodes of TNM and lost interest. Venus was just sacreligious, to me, and to have her defeat the Shredder like she did, was like having the writers take a giant dump in my cheerios. :ohwell:
